    Homeowner here: The work was done by a friend who didn’t know what he didn’t know and we didn’t know he didn’t know. 🤷‍♀️. You get what you pay for and the rest of the work he did was well done. He put in the kitchen and it was done correctly. Lesson learned. Showers are a completely different animal and should be left to professionals. We HIGHLY recommend Isaac Ostrom!

    I just finished completely redoing my shower. Tore everything down to the studs, rebuilt, replaced galvanized with PEX, added a new tub, then did 4” x 8” subways tiles on three walls including a shelf. It took me 31 days lol but I took my time and was meticulous in detail. I really hope it holds up

    Dude, you made my day. My installers embedded the hardibacker into the mud pre-slope, and I had them pull it out and re-do it. I showed them video after video before they started on what happens to hardibacker when moisture wicks up the wall and repeatedly told them NOT to install it that way.
    They were pissed until I presented the instructions to them in Spanish...they were pretty sheepish after that but tried to double-down telling me they *always* do it that way. They're so tied to doing it the way they've always observed it being done, they won't even accept the manufacturer's install instructions.
    At any rate, it's nice to get validation from someone who clearly knows what they're doing that I wasn't just overreacting.

    We're having some issues with one of our bathrooms as well, and we're hesitant to even call any contractors since we have no clue how to separate a good and honest contractor from bad ones as we have zero knowledge in these matters, so we've just been avoiding using our master bathroom completely for the past 10 months. We're afraid to end up with somebody telling us we have to blow out or entire bathroom when it might not be necessary (or vice versa, with somebody giving us a quick fix which might make things worse). Even though we live in Sweden where some rules and regulations might be different your videos are tremendously helpful, so thank you for sharing your knowledge!
    Also, thank you for the heads up on the niche details - this is a great example of something a Iayman as myself would never realize might cause a lot of headaches down the road, so if we end up remodeling our entire bathroom we'll say thank you but no thank you to these kinds of offers from any contractors.

    @Isaac Ostrom @Sal Diblasi I thank God that you guys put out such wonderful, and informative content!l I'm a relatively new subscriber to both of your channels, but have been absorbing the great information for about 2 years. Together with becoming familiar with the Standards set by the TNCA I learned enough to motivate me to do my first ever tile job, and yes, it was also my first ever shower. I see you, cringing right now, I do - but let me also say that the shower I built was a third shower in the home, and not one that will be needed very often, and I understood at the outset that if I needed to, or wanted to, I'd tear it out and start over. What motivated me the most, was having a "Professional" tile shower done in my Master Bath, that went wrong in ways that happened too quickly for me to stop...so I have a shower that works, but it is now suspect in several ways. The shower has a Kerdi-Schluter foam shower pan, and curb, and Kerdi Board on the walls, and a Kerdi preformed niche. The shower walls have lippage beyond what would be reasonable, I have what looks like mold in the lowest course of tile, and the pan has depressed areas where standing water gathers, and must be squeegeed int to the drain. Oy! Because of what I learned however, the shower that I built was better in these ways than the "Professional" job. - because I'm on the East Coast, I followed Sal Diblasi's tutorials for the prep, preslope, liner, and mud bed rather than attempting a hot mop, and I used a combination of thinking while designing my curb - this was untreated 2x4 over concrete floor, and a Kurb Perfect plastic form form for floating. If you find any of this interesting, I'd gladly post some photos I took of the different stages, but I mainkly wanted to thank you both from the bottom of my heart for all the HARD work you do, and TIME SPENT making this content, that helps us DIY-ers!!! Keep up the great work! :)

    But there are other ways to seal backer board or cement board with hydroban or redguard?

    And here is me thinking that cement board is just like cement...soaks in the water just like many other materials...just like my driveway....right? except it is water resistant...meaning it doesn't get damaged by water penetration (just like my driveway)...so in my false thinking,,,if the enough water somehow gets trough the tile/grout/seal to the cement board...it would become a leak, or the mold or whatever ...but the board it's self would not be destroyed by moisture...tiles would still be falling off of it. My point is...if you don't have a waterproof system in place behind the tiles then you're in trouble.

    Hi there nice video I know it's a old one am a bathroom fitter watching your video do you lads in the states use silicone notice non of it on this video. Do we rely only on grout for walls and floor lines as a water penetrating barrier. I have come across a lots of bodge jobs in my years from dot and dabbing hardly any coverage extreme lips and plumbing disasters even bad maintenance from client that also can lead to problems leaving it too long. Problem we have a lot of the time here is clients wanting to go for the cheapest quotation and end up paying more after the cheap and quick method didn't last long. Just what you get bad as each other. Some out there charge a premium but do poor quality work which you would probably find in every country. Nice mate keep it up

    • @justinofboulder
      @justinofboulder Před 5 lety

      I run my concrete board to within 1/2" of the pan liner (I use a pre-slope then vinyl liner, no hot moping here in my area). Given that I am installing at least a 2" thick pan, the mud pan holds the lower 6" of backer against the framing. When I "pour" my pans, I make sure to pack the perimeter extra well (I like to use a 10" steel tamper to really pack in the edges).....

    Question: What causes tile - after 10+ years to start to come off the wall? Not entirely but areas are hollow when knocking grout is coming out between so theres settling in those tiles. Any thoughts are appreciated.

    • @MostlyPeacefulCombatVet
      @MostlyPeacefulCombatVet Před 5 lety +1

      Neil, most likely a number of things like in this video. Water damage back behind there, and/or poor coverage. Coverage doesn't matter if there's water back there though. If it's hollow when you knock on it, usually there's nothing behind that area of the tile. Sorry to hear it, but hope this helps

    • @bigneilh

      @@MostlyPeacefulCombatVet Thanks for the idea. Its odd. There is durarock or something back there. It started with 4 tiles 2 over 2. We popped them off and re-thinset them. Now the 4 (2 over 2) are doing it. Going to pull them and restick em. I will inspect better when we have them off to see. How does water get "behind" a tile? I think some water is expected? This is a wall opposite the spray head.

      No problem.
      Some water whether it be alot of moisture or little can start wreaking havoc on a shower. We often see the shower pan leak, it will find the low spot of the liner or subfloor if there is no liner, and water will seep into the CBU/backer board and the studs.. Since tile and grout are not waterproof, and neither is backer board, it's hard to say 100% what the issue is stemming from. Even durock soaks water up like a sponge. Not as bad as hardi backer, but we see it frequent enough. Waterproofing is an absolute must in my opinion. I'd like to be able to tell you your problem is from this 1 problem. But that wouldn't be reasonable. It could be anything really. But just know..... If you have grout falling out, and tile coming loose, there's most likely a bigger underlying issue

    • @MostlyPeacefulCombatVet
      @MostlyPeacefulCombatVet Před 5 lety

      Also, no.... You want absolutely no moisture behind the tile. Period. I don't even like the old mud beds that were built to hold moisture that went below the substrate. But walls most certainly should stay dry 100% of always. 👍
