In the mid-1980s I talked to a B-52 pilot that was in Vietnam. I asked him “when you were bombing did you know if you were hitting anything” he said to me “mostly all I did was bomb trees in the jungle”
That's why we Infantrymen want close air support.
@@ScoutPL question is, how close do you want it
@@gunmasterx1164 On top of the enemy my friend. Danger close...
After the war they interviewed NVA regulars and VC who said they would sometimes shit themselves at the sound of sudden exploding ordinance dropped by B-52's that could not be seen or heard approaching' as they were hiding in tunnels right under many of those "trees!"
How and why would such intelligence from the ground make it back to a pilot?
"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write 'fuck' on their aeroplanes because it's obscene!"
Professionals have standards
There was a F-105 Thunderchief squadron with “SH” on the tail. Once their superiors heard that SH stood for “Shit Hot”, they reprimanded them and made them get rid of it. Better yet, the squadron asked for the SH designation, and it was properly granted to them.
Simply “SH”.

I’d argue that the Gulf War had the best sound track in my opinion.

They both have their appeal. I love both of them and i see the appeal of each. They embody different eras.
@@STREET24000yup , but Vietnam stands out the most , many of the songs such as Everybody wants to rule the world and thunder are the better Gulf War Songs.
@@STREET24000
Vietnam has the longest standing legacy. And for that matter, I never even heard of a Gulf War soundtrack.
One of my close close friends was in the 82nd Airborne and he was also involved in clandestine operations. He worked with special forces and called in air strikes with B-52's. He once told me that the B-52's laid down a trail of destruction that was awe inspiring. If the VC somehow managed to survive the blast then they would find them just laying there still alive but near death due to the shell shock. He was a hero in my book and I'm proud to call him my friend. RIP Chuck and to all the other Vietnam Vets I say thank you for your service.
I don´t want to sound like bad but you guys got into vietnam god knows why, killed a bunch of people and left without getting a thing same as afghan
@@pakowsky2656What makes it worse is the war was unnecessary.
We could of avoided the war if we simply helped Vietnam become free from France when they were asking for our help instead we chose France because we needed them more than Vietnam at the time because of NATO.
That eventually led to the rise of "communism" in Vietnam and of course the US is against communism so we supported a dickhead(from what I remember) because he wasn't a "communist".
Im honestly suprised Vietnam likes us after all that bs.
@@pakowsky2656 Well, I'm a Viet and I just wanna say fuck his friend. I have family members who still missing from that war thanks to the US government. Many other Viets still get killed or get disability every year by the unexploded bomb and the toxin they sprayed. Leave the past aside, we forgive them but don't forget. They are still better than the Chinese.
@@pakowsky2656we didn't , our government did , most young men went to Vietnam cause the government said so , you think the men who came home don't know that they left someones homeland burned and broken , they do and they didn't want to be apart of it but wtf are you supposed to do when it's basically forced on you or you feel like you need to go because your buddies go off to there or die there . we are proud of all the vietnam veterans for being some of the best young men to serve our nation and surviving those swamps and jungle to get back home from a pointless war and the ones who are still over there may they all get to come home one day too . We are proud of them, not the war . No one wanted war our government wanted it , I hate it that we left people behind in Vietnam and Afghanistan who helped us and we "protected", it's horrible and not right but that's why you see so many vets do their best to help the nations they fought in , its the right thing to do even if our government no longer supports them the way they should .
@@pakowsky2656US was a global superpower and wanted to fight commies all over the world, supporting your democratic allies in a war of survival from North Vietnam is a perfectly valid reason to engage.
Should they have? Not in hindsight, but they had their reasons is what I’m saying.
Lost my brother in law that served in this war, he became so paranoid would nail windows shut, didn't trust no one. Makes me sad that I live two blocks away from an army helicopter that I pass by everyday
From an old Fighter puke, circa 1968-74 air war NVN, we'd listen to this tune heading into NVN targets...as well as Mick's Gimmie Shelter...Thanks Sabbath and Mick...and a few more...Paint it black
Gimme shelter is such a gem, about to go take my shot for paratrooper, my Mexican ass has to much pride to not attempt it at least once, I love gimme shelter, the song that introduced me to war history and Vietnam history.

Those "fast movers" the F4 Phantom II is the bomb. Look at those USAF fighter pilots just blowing shit up. and the bombers as well. Insane shit. It is so bad ass. I appreciate the F-16, F-18, F-15, F-22 etc all bad ass. But the F4 Phantom saw real combat, and I love the design of the aircraft. The Phantom rules man. I am a big fan of the A-10 as well.

From Australia. As a veteran, I can honestly say it was the politicians who lost that war, and betrayed their soldiers, sailors and airmen without any remorse.
When you see stuff like this it's hard to imagine America sorta lost that war
Sorta? You mean, did lose. The United States went in to stop communist insurgents, and left with their tails between their legs while the communists overran the American embassy. That's a loss. Just like Afghanistan. The track record for interfering with the internal workings of other countries is terrible.
@@texaswunderkind "Tails between legs" heavily implies some sort of military inadequacy, which was nonexistent in Afghanistan, and despite all of the flaws of the US military in Vietnam, also wasn't the case there either. There was no issue with combat. The VC were so grievously battered that they couldn't even replace the losses they suffered (about half of their entire membership) during the Tet Offensive. Furthermore, 70 percent of those who remained weren't even from the south, but from North Vietnam. The fall of the south came after Paris Peace Accords and US withdrawal via a direct invasion through the DMZ by the PAVN (also known as the NVA) from North Vietnam, and took two years to reach Saigon even without facing US forces in battle. The issue was politics, both domestic and foreign. (South) Vietnam was untenable because of the geopolitical situation, not because "hurr durr no meddle in foreign country", and absolutely not because "hurr durr muriken can't fight".
In many ways, the same problem was present in Afghanistan (Taliban and AQ hiding in "neutral" Pakistan, massive insurgent casualties, and the American citizenry not understanding the concept of sacrifice and going ultra-doomer over a war that had killed fewer Americans in 20 years than Omaha Beach did in one hour). Only this time our local allies were completely useless and couldn't even be bothered to fight at all after we left.
We would’ve won if we kept a contract with South Vietnam. In fact more NVA were killed in the war than Americans.
@@SuperGman117 They say US won all battles, but lost the war.. But, have you been to Vietnam, and asked the Vietnamese who they were fighting? The Vietnamese had already been in war for several decades before US did enter the scene. And after WW2, the rumors say the Vietnamese really wanted to cooperate with the US, given the fact the US (OSS) did support, train and supply the Vietnamese in the fight against the Japanese. Maybe the US did loose the war because they really didn't understand what they were fighting for. I mean, how many in US did know the Vietnamese were fighting a former allie?
@@nedimyra What exactly is your point?

We need more of this aesthetic in the modern forces. Everything is so bland.
During the world wars, America’s biggest strength was how unpredictable the military was. We were well known for being crazy. Now everything is so standardized and orderly, we have lost our greatest strength.
@@wheelspinproductions9214 Everyone in the World Wars were doing insane crazy shit just due to the size and insanity of that conflict.
@@wheelspinproductions9214 To be fair the Vietnam War was actually a major reason why that sense of uniform blandness became pervasive through modern American forces. After the war and American withdrawal/defeat the upper brass basically wanted higher regulation and discipline in the ranks, leading to less of this aesthetic. This is particularly poignant with helmets during Desert Storm, which are few and far between for graffiti.
@@wheelspinproductions9214 bro you got no idea what your talking about😂😂
@@morecopemorerope4372he’s got a point. Americans were seen as baby-eaters. It didn’t help much that we had high-rolling generals like Patton, McArthur etc.

Being a US Fighter pilot is the most complex job in the world. There is no other profession so complicated and intense in combat. They have like a million moving parts in their head at once. And do math on the fly for say energy management. Speed, velocity, altitude, AoA (Angle of Attack) which is critical. And many more systems to manages within seconds. Being a US fighter pilot is basically god. It does not get anymore difficult than this. And it does not get anymore badass in life than this. It is the ultimate profession hands down. But, only less than the 1% can do it. :)
