Video Description: As the Vietnam war continues, so does the air strikes, the USAF also brought in what is called Combat Photography to be used to gain knowledge and train pilots on how to properly bomb a target, almost all the footage of that program has now been long declassified and turned into well, this video.
Operation Rolling Thunder was the title of a gradual and sustained aerial bombardment campaign conducted by the United States 2nd Air Division, U.S. Navy, and Republic of Vietnam Air Force against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam from 2 March 1965 until 2 November 1968, during the Vietnam War.

    D. Anderson, USMC, Hotel Company, 2dBn, 9th Marines, 3d MarDiv, 2/9/3, 68-69 Operation Dewey Canyon. In memory of 58,281 men including 8 women, all nurses, 16 clergy members and 160 Medal of Honor recipients who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice.
Many carry a sense of having been betrayed by civilian and military leaders and by society generally. Be-trayed by politicians who resorted to war under false pretenses and took advantage of their patriotism and youth (the average age of a soldier in Vietnam was 19) and who placed constraints on war strategy that set them up for failure.
It's easy to forget that those who served in Vietnam grew up in a time when politicians were seen as statesmen focused on the common good. Most trusted their leaders when told that war was necessary to stop the spread of communism. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, most volunteered. They were part of a generation raised with stories about how their fathers and uncles had accepted the duties of citizenship and won the Great War.
These soldiers realized quickly that their fathers war was very different than the one into which they had been led. Their fathers had typically fought as parts of large coordinated forces against a massed enemy, taking and holding territory and attaining measurable strategic objectives, each of which moved them closer to victory. This was not true in Vietnam. Due to geopolitical constraints there would be no invasion of North Vietnam. Rarely would they face a massed force fighting in conventional fashion. In Vietnam, the enemy was often invisible, attacking then slipping away. Though the Army of North Vietnam was a conventional guerilla force, the Viet Cong were often indistinguishable from civilians.
A rotational system of deployment that constantly shuffled around the membership of units and which some believed undermined unit cohesion and morale, negative media stereotypes of American soldiers, exposure to conditions of intense privation, chronic feeling of being under threat with no safe place to go, and faulty equipment that broke down under fire. Others were stung by leadership claims that the war was necessary to liberate the people of South Vietnam only to find, as one veteran put it, "Those people just wanted us out and some wanted to cut my throat." I've known many who continued to resent what they saw as lies told by military and civilian leaders claiming progress was being made when the experience on the ground suggested they were stuck in a quagmire.
Then there was the betrayal of the homecoming. Though the antiwar movement had broad roots composed of people who genuinely wanted to stop the war, there was a segment openly hostile not just to the war but to the troops who fought it. Returning veterans who had given everything they had and who simply wanted to return home were often met with hostility.
Vets often say things such as, "We were spat on, called baby killers, treated like dirt when we arrived back home." Others remember subtle hostility: "I was afraid to wear my uniform in public because of the looks I'd get." Many contrast their experience with an earlier generation. "Those World War 2 guys got parades and ticker tape; we got stabbed in the back."

I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 (My mom had to sign a waiver for me), I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang,. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. Somewhere along the way I was exposed to Agent Orange (Nasty Stuff) I am now on disability for the effects of agent orange. When I was discharged and came home to the States we arrived in San Francisco, and there were a lot of protesters spitting on us and throwing rocks and eggs and called us baby killers. That was our welcome home. I tell you this to say to you, that whatever your position is or was on the Vietnam war, it was not the veteran who got us into the war, most of us went because we were patriots and loved our country. Blame the politicians, yes, but not the veteran. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten. As a previous combat Vet myself, I salute you my friend.

Being born three weeks after operation rolling thunder ended, I still remember the radio speaker introducing as good as every news with the word "Vietnam..." when I was a little boy before I even went to school. And bad pictures of injured or dead soldiers and civilians. My father always told me not to look at, but as a little boy I was curious and watched, the pictures are still in my mind today. A little girl running down the street naked with a totally burnt back, crying and much more. Thoughts of this war and especially hearing this song or "Fortunate Son" with a video of Vietnam war makes me very sad. So many lives were erased or otherwise for nothing!

Operation Rolling Thunder was a failure. Thanh Hoa bridge was bombed 638 times in 1965 without damaging it. It took 7 years for US planes to destroy it- in 1972. In 1973 the US had lost the sad and pointless war.

Name a war that's 'just.' 🤔There are none. It's the worst of human behavior. 'Justice' comes after a war that needs to be fought. If that war hadn't been fought, all of SE Asia would have been lost to the most unjust people in the world. Look what they did in Laos and Cambodia -- shoot, it was so bad the Vietnamese had to invade to stop the slaughter. Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia -- all would have been lost. They were stopped -- that's all that matters.

True the main reason behind this war was to stop the "domino effect" which enabled communist insurgencies to spill into neighbouring countries. Although US withdrew from Vietnam and the south fell to the communist north, the war effort ensured the rest of indochina and SE Asia did not fall to the red plague.
Also statistically speaking US was using mostly inexperienced, short equipped conscripts while they kept their main assault groups inEuroep incase of Soviet invasion, and STILL in almost all major battles such as Huey, Hamburger Hill or Tet Offensive US came out victorious losing around 60 thousand of soldiers while the NVA and Viet-Cong death casualties numbered around 2 million. It's safe to say main factor of US pulling out was civil unrest back home caused by anti war protests, and lack of any further relevance for defending frivolent south vietnam after ensuring communists wouldn't march further.

Both served in Quang Tri Province together, survived numerous incursions, and made it back home, both in one piece. Externally they were strong and fit, & the funniest guys ever; internally, they both had vulnerabilities. Harold, unfortunately, died from years of drug use, resulting, I believe, from what he experienced over there. Growing up, I never really thought to ask them about it. Since my mother passed away, I have lost touch with them both. I have mounds of respect for both of them, and Howard, if you’re still here and get a chance to read this, please know that I appreciate your being in my life, & think and pray for you constantly. I will never forget that, she was near my age only a lot less fortunate, her family likely dead. People have no idea about those times because they were mostly deprived of proper or complete history by those focused solely on the casualties. Most people do not realize the US supported mainland China before the communist took over, even with large amounts of weapons. The "Chinese reds" came down from the North too, they executed and committed democide, and starved on a level that would make Vietnam look like a bus accident. 80 Million died directly at the hands of the Chinese communist not including Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, in comparison Hilter's terror killed 17 million. So many Americans of every color, nationality, creed, etc. lost loved ones during this war alone. So yes, if you would like to kneel, then please find another place to call home. You are turning your back to the ones who fought for this country of which you belong!!! Wake the hell up....stop the division from so long ago...this is so damn sad.

@@philmenzies2477, those are Mk. 82/Snakeye I 500-lb. General Purpose Bombs: These bombs were used extensively throughout the Vietnam War and were carried on most attack, bomber and fighter aircraft of the day. The difference between the standard free fall MK. 82 and the MK. 82/Snakeye is the Mk. 15 Tail Retarding Device. This device was used in low-level ground attacks and slowed the descent of the bomb so that the attacking aircraft could clear the blast area.
