I was a forward air controller mid 80s. I use to give them my position as a target on the range and they would "attack" my position. Of the pair that came in, one was an experienced major, and one was a new pilot who never went below 500ft. The major however... came in from his IP (starting point) and went directly out of site.. because he was flying 20 ft off the ground below the trees on the range road... once he got east of my position he popped up, flipped upside down, point his nose at me, and flipped upright saying "guns guns guns" on the radio as he came in on me from out of the sun... once he flew past, he dove back down and flew away down the range road again out of site. All this happened in 10 seconds. Dude was a bad man.

A long, long time ago, I was in my boss’s office, for him to sign off on paperwork. We finished up with the signatures, and he hands me another piece of paper. “Read that, and tell me what you think.”
It was very nice paper, and on it was the most polite letter I’ve ever read. It was from a member of an A 10 squadron, asking if they could please use one of product logos belonging to the company I worked for, as their squadron insignia.
I said “He’s incredibly polite. Are you going to let them do it?”
My boss, Mike, said “I asked what you think.”
I said “I think you should. They call A 10’s Warthogs, after all. And that would look incredible on a plane!”
Mike grinned back at me, and said “That’s what I think, too.”
I gave the paper back, and Mike started scribbling on it.
“Especially if they paint teeth on the nose like the Flying Tigers, but with tusks, like a hog!”
Mike snickered at me, handed the paper back, and said “Take that up to Legal. Tell ‘em to call me if they have questions.”
Mike had just directed Legal to give the A 10 squadron the right to use the logo, no caveats, and no licensing fee.
And when the Gulf War rolled around, there was footage on the Evening news of an A 10 squadron that was being deployed - and every one of their planes had the Exide “SuperHog” logo on it, and there were a lot of nose guns framed in very sharp teeth, and tusks, too.
Wherever you are, Mike, I will always be proud of you for that call, and proud of the planes and pilots who truly are Super Hogs.

All the ground troops always say how much they loved hearing these suckers coming into the fight n how the enemy would always shit a brick.
In his home office he’s got one of the barrels for the Gau-8 avenger mounted up on his wall. Had to do some major wall structural reinforcement to hold it up there. Had the whole barrel custom chromed plated. Hell of a conversation piece.

(From August 2023) Thank you for creating and posting this awesome visual/music sync! I used to make them for myself for the fun of it! But to the point: The A-10, my second favorite military aircraft (First = the F-14)! All I need to hear is the sound of its 30mm rotary cannon, and I instantly know what’s there. If you haven’t wiki’d it yet, I highly recommend do so: that gun, poking its nose out just a little=very deceptive. That gun runs the length from its tip to the the leading edges of the wing roots. As you probably already know, the gun was the ultimate prerequisite for any bids from aerospace companies. The challenge was to build a plane around that gun!👏🏽 There were also other prerequisites: The plane needed to be able to fly home with half the tail missing, half of one wing missing, on one engine.😮 I love this plane for several reasons, primarily its role as close air support/loiter time. Imagine a little group of scared 18 y/o soldier boys taking cover, they can hear the enemy getting closer and surrounding them. And what to do? Call an angel. Give the pilot the numbers, establish “danger close” and the guy or gal on the radio hopes the numbers are right and screams “Fire for effect!” Heads down and wait for a few seconds, then you hear the whine of the A-10s turbofans, music to the ears in such a moment, then an orchestra of BOOMS and BRRRRRT. The angel comes back around and more loud BOOMS and BRRRRRRT. And before they know it, they are the only people alive within a half mile radius. I can’t imagine how many vets still walk this Earth only because an A-10 saved them. Oh yeah, and those 30mm depleted uranium rounds can go through any tank armor like the proverbial “hot knife through butter.” I never got why it picked up the nickname Warthog because many consider it ugly, and I’m like, are we looking at the same plane here? The A-10? Because I think it is gorgeous! Instead of Warthog it should be ANGEL. And a beautiful one at that. But I’m sure any vets who got saved by one, never ever again thought it ugly. For such vets, they see an A-10 and think “Savior.”😇

Forward to Desert Storm; Day 2 of the attack, we're leading a support convoy of maintenence support vehicles, clerks, mechanics and fuelers. Along with us are 2 M88A1's towing a combination of Bradleys, M1's, and 113's. We also have a Cav Scout section of Bradleys and 1 functional M1 moving with us. (Apparently they got lost, found us and joined up) We're hours behind our tanks and other forces because of how slow the 88's are under load. You could see the tension in everyone's face and feel it in the air.
Suddenly we get buzzed by 2 A10's, coming over us at about 150 feet and waggling their wings. A cheer went up from the entire convoy and you could see and feel everyone relax across our little force. God forbid we send A10s to Ukraine. What is it with everybody and "oH thIS tHiNg ReMinDS mE oF thE WAr IN UkRAiNE!" It started with people comparing literal Marvel heroes to fighting Putin or something and now this. Ukraine has enough of our equipment God forbid they get anymore for fear Russia captures one of our best airframes.

@@mereelfalstom9232 It would not be a big deal. It is as old as/older than Star Wars, with relatively little sensitive equipment, and but a part of a perfectly functioning war machine. A technical with the best engine or machine gun on the planet is not going to destroy a tank, so a single wunderwaffe can't change the tide.
Besides, they can barely produce their own aircraft, let alone reverse engineer a complex weapon system built in imperial units, which uses turbine and electronic technologies that they don't even have access to

You really have to give a standing ovation for how realistic they made a video game plane. In fact, an A-10 is so hard to fly in the game that by the time you learn how to fly it, you can hop in an actual one and know most of what to do. Look it up.

So glad they decided to upgrade it instead of can it. The warthog in my opinion still to this day the best attack airplane and ground troop support aircraft ever made. they say it's ugly but I think it's a thing of beauty May the warthog never die🤓

These things saved my Dad's life in Iraq pt 1. His company was held down by tanks, commander called in Close Air, two of these came in "less than 20 feet off the dunes", completely annihilated a couple tanks. A10s are an airborne TANK.

tbf they really didnt. The A-10 wasnt expected to last long at all. Just be another cog in the war machine to stop to red horde. i mean they were estimated to last less than 6 months in combat against the USSR.

My ex girlfriend and I were hiking Mt St Helen’s just below the cauldera in 1995 and two in formation blasted over the top of the ridge 75 feet from us I never heard them until they broke the ridge. The dogs got twitchy right before but we both fell over mostly as a reaction not because it blew us over, but that was AWESOME. Highlight of the trip.

I think this is fitting for all air combat pilots
A well known military aviation poem "High Flight", written by John G. Magee on September 3, 1941. The version that most nearly follows the original manuscript is as follows:
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
    of sun-split clouds,-and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew-
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God
