7:00 I haul crap on my roof all the time. Just in case you miss it in the essay: Home Depot has a box of twine to tie down loads, it is totally free, just ask an associate.
The trick is to use four straps first and foremost. You need one on the front, horizontal, one on the back, horizontal, but also one that wraps over the front lip and is strapped diagonally BEHIND the door column. The last strap wraps over the rear lip of the load and straps in FRONT of the door column. This way if it shifts forwards or backwards the straps hold it in place.
The front and rear horizontal ones keep it from "catching air" and if you have a stack of thin sheets, you can tape the front together with a couple strips of masking, painters, or duck tape to keep them sandwiched with a pointy "nose". Two pairs of vise grips might work in a pinch.
I busted one of the ratchets, so now I have to rig it up with one ratchet holding two straps. You could probably get by with two ratchets, but you MUST have four straps for it to be perfect.. Home depot also has a box of twine at the contactor exit which they are happy to let you use to tie down loads.
In a pinch with only two straps and no twine, I would focus on the front and rear lip, making a sort of 'x' pattern, the real risk the load moving forward during braking or backwards during acceleration.
