Honestly Gordon your cameralabs reviews are simply fantastic. They touch on all the relevant issues and still manage to keep it fairly short and simple and your presentation is clear and pleasant to listen to. Thank you so much for sharing them with us!
Thanks, we're showing an HD version, but you should be able to see an improved version here too by clicking 'watch in HD' below the video. BUT you will need a fast internet connection, or wait for it to buffer a bit first before playing...
thanks Gordon, im buying one next week... always a pleasure watching your reviews
Gordon, this review on the Canon 5D Mark II is the best video review I've ever seen. It's thorough, well-scripted and your delivery is impeccable. Absolutely fabulous! Thanks for your research and your reviews. You have most assuredly helped me make my choice for my next DSLR. All the best!
Cheers!
Thanks for the in-depth review, Gordon! It's nice seeing the 5D Mark II explained in video, rather than text form (even better, you've got it in both!).
The quality of these HD videos I find absolutely staggering. The 5DM2 video output is also amazing, it's wonderful to see moving images of your often-used testing environments.
PS: Notice the tiny strand flying in and sticking to the 5DM2's screen at around 00:50. Wow. The future is now.
This video is really, really helpful. I read many different reviews about the 5D, including the one on your website, wich I visit very often; as a matter of fact, I watched it on your website but I wanted to live you a comment, that's why I'm here. Thanks for taking the time to make this video review!
Your reviews are so much more informative, professional, and to the point than that other guy in Hong Kong!
Great review. I just ordered the 5D Mii a couple days ago and can hardly wait. The remote live review is going to come in handy for many of the projects that I have planned. I currently use an Olympus E-620, although a nice general purpose camera, it has a lot to be desired.
i own a 450D at the moment, but going to upgrade to 5Dmk2 thanks to your awesome review. I'll also pick up the 24-105 & 17-40. Can't wait.
Thanks Gordon.
@subversyv Thanks! It's actually all ad-libbed, including the pieces to camera. I keep doing retakes until I'm happy with a segment, then move onto the next one. I used to do a radio show in London long ago, but it was live and that was a completely different experience!
Yes it is!
Thanks, you're very welcome! Don't forget this video is just a small part of my full review at cameralabs . com, so be sure to check it out too! And don't forget you can also support us by shopping through the partner stores at the cameralabs site, even for books and DVDs...
extremely helpful...loving my 5DMkII with Canon 24-75 2.8 Lens
@MrIrishlogic If they are, it's just coincidence as I filmed and edited the whole thing in one go and just cut it in hlaf to make the two videos here - before YT allowed uploads longer than 10 minutes...
@cameralabs you are right - I had the same problem as well and just took out the stabilisation motor. Now its calm.
Gordon your reviews are the best. keep up the good work.
Can we wish for more lens reviews from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc.
Great to see you exploiting youtube's hd option Gordon! Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year.
best dslr camera reviewer on youtube.
Excellent and informative review - Canon should link to you. Will be upgrading to MkII from 5D for the movie function and this has greatly helped.
There is a battery grip for the 5D2, but sadly no it does not increase the fps. I have no plans to test it, but one of the 5D2 owners on the cameralabs forum might if you fancy asking there!
Yes, RAW plus JPEG will record two versions of the same image. As for SD and CF, it's a split between consumer and professional DSLRs. Lower end models use SD, while pro and semi-pro use CF. CF also supports technologies like UDMA for improved speed.
You are my hero Gordon !! I can't thank you enough for these videos :D You totally rock my world :D
Your da man Gordon when it comes to reviews ;-) nice one mate!
Another great review
Thanks very much
This was so helpfull!
Im making a film for the V 48 hour film fest and i got the option of using this camera over the three cam corders i already had.. wasent to sure just because filming a short film with a DSLR sounded kinda weird and i already had three dedicated cameras. I knew this shot in 1080P as well but still couldent choose...googled it..found this video and hands down im going with this camera for my film should look kick ass through this
thanks for this review!
Thanks! You can wish for the lens reviews, but they won't send me them to test, so until then, there won't be any.
The latest I've heard is on the verdict page of my 5D2 review at cameralabs . com - I'll update that page as and when Canon releases new news! Have you noticed the problem though? It only affects certain photos, and many people may not even notice it. We have an active 5D2 thread on the cameralabs forums, so be great to hear what you think of it, and what you've found...
Thanks for the review..
I'm not sure what you're reading, but let me assure you the D700 is a full frame DSLR. As for a replacement, I have no idea, sorry!
@jibselicious It's probably the image stabilisation motor in the lens.
@TheNoadShow The EF 24-105mm
I'm from England, but yep, I live in NZ. Nice work climbing the Remarks - it's bad enough driving up the access road!
@chuda99 Thanks, you're very welcome! Don't forget to visit the Partner stores page at cameralabs if you're ever shopping for anything online!
it takes roughly 4 pics per second. If you want 20, just record in video mode and have 30.
Gordon, I heard that there is a dedicated battery grip that comes with the 5D M2. My question is, will be be able to increase the fps of the camera? And could you please review both together? Thanks.
Very good tutorial!
Do you recommend the Mark II over the D600 or 6D?
hey , can i ask a question
what is fps ( fram per secon
could you tell me if this camera could take 20 photos per second
thank you very much
When it comes to the RAW+JPEG setting (or when considering hte quality the Large & Raw + Large) does that mean that the camera takes the picture twice and creates two files? Also, why hasn't the DSLR majority shifted to SD memory? I Know there are some in the market that do use SD, but it seems like the bulk of them use CF, and I was curious as to why. Thanks.
Gordon, you mentioned that the 5DM2 can't save movie video on a PC's hard disc. Is there any other way that we can save it in hard disc while using PC sync?
It's now June 2020 and just bought a 2nd hand 5Dii, it's like brand new only 7k clicks... G-A-S solves nothing for most people and this a VERY capable camera even today in the right hands.... I'm a still shooter only and I'm looking forward to use it for many years to come. If I need video in the future then it is a different story maybe.
very nice review! wish i had the money for this camera. im using a canon 30D right now. also, you remind me of Dr. Mike from the show Bite Me
@wotg Thanks! You can wish for them, but they'd have to send them in for review first! Sigma is a good bet for the future, but Tamron refuses to send theirs.
I'm looking to buy one here in 2023!! Great video!
How much have have you seen them for?
@@cameralabs $240 is about the average price.
yes it says in the video
how big is the difference, when compared to sonys alpah a77, which is not ful frame.
a77 is SLT. While 5DM2 is SLR. A77 should be better camera for video as it is slightly newer and benefit from quicker focusing then mirrorles camera or SLR turned to live view. But It is certainly worse for taking still pictures then 5DM2 and probably will also have worse video performance under non-ideal light conditions.
ur videos are great im gonna get a mark 2
im taking digital photography classes and i wanna continue with advance classes,i wanna upgrade my nikon d 5000 i was wondering if this camera is good or im also thinking the new nikon d 7000 any suggestions you can give me?
I have a question: Is there on the EOS 5D Mark II and HDR mode?
Thank you for the review,
As a filmmaker I'm thinking of switching over to DSLR shooting. I'm hesitant, but so far everything points to it being superior. You wouldn't know any traditional style video cameras around the same price range that would be comparable in quality?
hey Gordon, is the Nikon D90 a full fraim Dslr?
Wow, love the HD video reviews. For instance, anyone notice the speck of fluff/dust move in front of the camera at 0:55?
I like your reviews a lot, they are very imformative, thanks very much for that, but since this dSLR is about 3+ years old, can it really compete with another dSLR such the newer Nikon D7000, which I owned for a year but got stolen for a litle while now, So I am wondering to whether buy this one or the D7000, would really appreciate your advice/Denny
It depsnds how risk-averse you are! An import won't come with a local warranty, so you effectively have none unless you send it back to where it came from. So it depends if or when you think it'll break. By the way, if you're buying from Amazon, Adorama, B&H etc, please click through to them from the affiliate stores page at cameralabs - that's what keeps the reviews coming!
HelloNewYorkCity>
I have to choose a Canon EOS camera for general journalistic work (web journalism, everything from portrait to sport). I'm struggling to make a decision as nobody seems to be able to concur which is the better overall camera. Is the AF on the 5D really that bad? What have pros been doing before 19 point AF? *ponder*
Do you perhaps have any insights?
@sonofdasea
Which did you decide on, the eos 5d2 or d700?
I`d prefer the eos because of its full frame sensor
should i buy this one or 7d or i should wait for 5d mark3
Gordon:
Can you tell me how to set the 5D Mark II ISO below 200 and Auto? My camera does not give me the option to go below 200 or Auto.
Thanks
Julio
Thanks so much for this review. I am looking for a camera to make short films and music video, but one that is also good with photographs. I am a film major and is the Canon 5mk 2 the suggested camera for what I may need it for?
--Wachy
I would like to upgrade to "full frame". I have the 5D 2 as an option, but I have read a lot of complaints from Canon users about "soft focus issues", "focus screen falling off", "High noise at low settings"... you know, It makes me think twice about the 5D II! Did Canon fix those issues yet? Thanks! :-)
Nope, it's a cropped DX format. The D700, D3 and D3x are Nikon's full-frame models.
Thanks... while I have your attention, I would like to know: do you think. the D700 will be replaced or upgraded to a true Full frame sensor like the 5D mark II any time soon?
Based on what I have read the D700 is NOT a TRUE full frame DSLR... so I decided to wait it out.
What do you think?
I find CAMERALABS very helpful & informative
I don't think so. You can start and stop recording by remote control, but the video will only go onto the memory card.
yea maybe you're right. I'm not a professional photographer however for the rest of us its an awesome deal considering u get great video recording abilities (with the bonus of different zooms/focus abilities that are hard to do on home digi vid cams) and u get the bonus of a great full frame dslr which is more than enough for the average user / amateur enthusiast... i love it. as for a career photographer... cant comment :\
I have a canon 5d Mark II and was wondering if anyone could explain what goes on when shooting the video and you change the "speed" on the Tv setting. It is my understanding that the everything remains open (mirror and the two curtains). But how does the speed then change when shooting the video if this is the case?
In addition, I see there are options to be able to change out the "focusing screen" on my camera. How is it different than the original?
Thanks in advance,
The Meltdownman
Hey, can you auto focus whilst shooting video?
@jamie1234591 No problem, it's Queenstown, New Zealand.
@imflyinn What is Film???. and do they still use that???. and when u say film do u mean Still or Motion???.
Can this record in 60 FPS ?
That camera is hot! And Gordon too!
so gordon what happing about the black dot, thing as got a new 5D mark 2,
@bradleypaul10 As a filmmaker, this is exactly what drew me to this camera. With a few adaptations the Mark II becomes a powerful and versatile movie-making machine. I think that if I were strictly a still photographer, I would look elsewhere. It just seems that the full HD video would be overkill and contribute to an unnecessary extra cost.
i still loving my manual camera and darkroom, and all the facilities the tecnology is bringing is for new lasy people, and now everything is digital... i like the features of this camera, but we know that almost all of those you can do it yourself.. the software it's like a darkroom, and lightroom ps software... i think i just will bouthg this is for the hd filming,, haha for the rest, all old cameras are the same.
i like this video as well :) nice
@MrTestTutorials Please read the movie mode page of my 5D 2 review at cameralabs . com - if you think you'd be happy with the restrictions, then go for it. Otherwaise, buy a normal camcorder.
I wonder what the Mk 3 will offer - can I justify the upgrade though? :S
@boyniao Ya the A900 is a pretty solid machine! It was actually between that one and the Nikon D700 - I ended up with the D700 though and I couldn't be happier!
i used this camera 2 days ago, and its amazing, the video, the quality is great!!
im a filmmaker and im looking for a good hd camera to have and this is the one to get, i saw a video of the Canon 5D Mark 2 being compared to one of the best HD camera out today, The RED One.
seach Canon 5D Mark 2 vs Red One. its crazy! i was so amazed. everyone should check it out.
im getting this camera for my birthday :D!!
does the 5D have autonatic video mode
it should be. it supports the ef-s series
How does the 5DM2 stack up against Nikon's D700??
I've compared them in the verdict of my 5D Mark II review at cameralabs . com...
@theoneandonlydenny Sorry to hear your D7000 was stolen. The 5D2 is getting on but still offers the best resolution in the current Canon range. Buying decent compatible full-frame lenses though can get expensive. It all depends what you want from your camera, and having owned the D7000 you'll know in which aspects it may have disappointed you. Have a look at the best buys section at cameralabs . com for the models I recommend right now...
@bradleypaul10 From what I viewed, Canon designers stated that this camera was designed for the reporters/correspondents out in the field who needed a hybrid. However, the "masses" have tried to eek out every last capability of this camera from stills to movie making. It was even used in the movie "Up in the Air" and some HBO series. Hence the push to upgrade the firmware (e.g. 30fps/24fps capability). This is an excellent compromise in capability and price in my opinion.
The Meltdownman
5D MARK II or D700 (NIKON)?
Over all witch one is the superior DSLR ?
hopefully a firmware update will allow easy control of aperture in video mode rather than complex workarounds.
is the canon software mac compatible??
this or d700? i think this might win in the end because of the 1080p movie mode and 21.1 megapixels, but i shoot lots of sports, primarily skiing and surfing, and 3.9 fps is like 1 step to slow. at least be somewhere around 5 with this w/o the battery pack. the d700 is 8 fps and that great. But again, in the end, I think this wins.
Still a great camera - so much so I'm generation jumping and wont upgrade until at least the Mk4
@cameralabs On the contrary to stupidcommentbelow's statement, you speak very well. You clearly know what you're talking about, and you say only what you need to. People respond best to factual statements, as opposed to unnecessary babble, so you're definitely doing the right thing. Keep up the good reviews, I really enjoy them :)
By the way, I think I'm going to buy that camera, I couldn't decide before :)
How much it cost??
No, you can only use the EF lenses
@bradleypaul10 I would love to have a really great camera and a really great camcorder, and if I can have them all in one machine, then that's even better. :) That's just my opinion though. To each his own. What is your favorite camera?
just change the shutter speed of the video model, make sure ur camera is in manual
Great video, thanks! Am I the only one who saw the dust fly by at 0:54 and had to check if it was real?
Not to mention a decent computer. The one I'm running on can't display HD material at a decent framerate.
You have a very good english :o nice camera btw
EOS 5D MARK II Is So Totally Freakin' Remarkable n I'm Gonna Get This Ard Nxt Year Soon!!! ^,^ Bty I'm Currently Usin' My New Canon EOS 550D...
Well. Canon added the Video as a selling point but also as an extra. They decided to add live view so why not have an option to record? its pretty basic recording format. just an small extra that is kinda cool. but your right. Focus on picture taking experience.
thanks !! i've seen lot's of yr reviews !! but i've also seen some comments where they say bad things about u !! DON'T LISTEN TO THEM !! :D :D :D
