Yes, watching this in November 2019 as I just bought a 5D2 :) Thanks Gordon!
It's now June 2020 and just bought one 2nd hand, like brand new only 7k clicks... highly capable camera in the right hands, looking forward to using it for many years to come.
I'm always looking forward to viewing more of your videos Mr.Laing! Keep up the wonderful work!
Thanks very much for taking the time to review this indepth! I've really fallen in love with some of the features of the camera and I don't even own one (yet)... Very cool PC connecting tidbits too.
@cameralabs thanks for looking giving it a thought....i highly appreciate ur hard work and resources u put into it...regards
Theres nothing wrong with the video quality of this, its crystal clear. Great review.
@cameralabs thanks for looking into it...i greatly appreciate ur good and hard work...regards
It's been a while since I tested it, but as I recall there might be a tiny crop for the video, but it is essentially the same coverage. The Mark III is definitely the same, the horizontal resolution was chosen to be perfectly divisible by 1920.
Gordon you're the man, thanks for all your reviews!
Merry Christmas Gordon, and thank you for this wonderfully elaborate 2-part, HD video tour! The 5DM2 was at display at the local electronics outlet, unfortunately they didn't have the batteries in. Will revisit them soon.
Kudos to CZcams and broadband internet, can you imagine watching streaming HD just last year?
Very nice review - your coverage of all camera sides from close up distance is very useful for a buyer who has not had much info on the body. Well done.
Your videos are really helpful. Thanks for the vids. I use them for buying new camera equipment and just to learn about my stuff. I'm going to be using my friends 5D Mark II to take a photoshoot at a concert and your video really helped me get to know the camera, which i haven't been able to mess with yet. Thanks, and keep 'em coming.
Great video man! I have learned a lot from all your videos!!
Best person on youtube when it comes to DSLR's
Oh my how far we've come. What an absolutely fantastic camera even in 2023.
Thanks, you may enjoy my Dino Bytes channel
Really really great review, thank you. Want this camera very badly.
as usual, fantastic review
loved the results for video recording. Def looking forward to buy it! :)
@cameralabs I started getting into photography at the end of last year, and without your awesome videos I would never have brought the 450D that I currently own. Adverts seem a small price to pay for the awesome stuff you do - keep it up :)
Are you referring to the shutter release button? It is softer on the 5D2 because that's how Canon designs its pro shutter buttons.
looks incredible in HD
I filmed this five years ago so can't remember 100%, but I probably used the 24-105mm for most of the samples, although I also had the 85mm f1.8 at that time.
@siliconsurf This is my job and something has to pay for it, unless I switch to a pay per view model. Would you prefer ads or to pay per view?
@KrissiBenassi I think there'll be a 30 second dark-frame subtraction after a 30 second exposure for noise reduction - most DSLRs will do this.
Thanks a bunch! This was helpful! I was wondering how the video was!
Can't wait for the 2nd part :) I'm so in love with the old 5d and this one seems to be even greater (but is really?). Besides, I heard that there are some issues with the camera's software resulting in mysterious black spots on the images....
Merry Xmas, Gordon!!! The best wishes from Poland!
HD! Wow that's sweet, makes these great reviews even better. And the 5D Mark II is,t too shabby either. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks for the tip... YT seems to accept longer videos from me now anyway!
Hi, I used a Sony DCR-HC96 for my standard definition videos, but switched to a Canon HV30 for this high definition video.
@cameralabs Thanks a lot, Gordon. And, please, keep up the excelent work.
@cameralabs do you make more money off of the ads before the videos or the side bar ads? I have the side bar ads and make a decent amount but just wondering if you make more.
Very good video great reviews well done
Are you watching this in HD? I thought the quality was ok! I'm using a Canon HV30 HD camcorder. The audio is still ropey, but I thought the picture was good.
hi Gordon, I have no wireless option on my canon 5d mark 2, can you tell me how to set this wireless
Great reviews, hopefully you'll keep them coming. I think that I have decided to go with the Canon 7D, but I have a question for you. When you go out for a shoot what camera do you take with you?
3:09 gotta love that shutter sound. one can identify (even with eyes closed) that unique sound.
I am back on CZcams! I've uploaded several videos over the past few weeks!
It may surprise you to learn many pros use their cameras on auto. Remember the important thing is getting the shot and if you're shooting action, news etc, you don't have time to adjust manual exposures. That's why all cameras, including much higher-end ones than this, have auto modes.
Yep, check out my 7D review at cameralabs . com, especially the results and verdict pages... can't speak for the D3s though.
I recently compared the D3x image quality against the 5D Mark II - see how it measured up at cameralabs . com!
@bizupatel That's not a bad idea, but it'd be a constantly moving target. I'll have a think about how it might work though...
Very in-depth review, thanks! I heard bad things about the image stabilization and rolling shutter, but the image quality is just unbeatable at this price, especially for video. I'm definitely getting this or the 7D when I have some money to waste.
Gordon, you are a legend!
@digitalportugal The image quality is better on the 5D2, but the build, speed and AF is better on the 7D. Please check out my 7D review at cameralabs . com as I compared their quality there. As for lenses, if you want a shallow depth-of-field to blur backgrounds, the best general-purpose zooms would be the 17-55 f2.8 or the 24-70 f2.8, depending on which range is more useful to you; note the 17-55 won't work on the 5D2. Please consider shopping through the Support Us page at cameralabs . com !
I just use the internal mics on the camcorders at the moment due to technical issues with lapel mics. I hope to resolve this in the future though!
Great review, thank you.
thanks Gordon for all the reviews and the hard work u put into it....can u please make a short video or a list of equipments we can get for under 1200$, a beginners kit with a dslr body + lens + tripod. it would be your recommendation that i would be buying..thanks again...
The actual quality has the potential to be slightly better than most consumer HD camcorders, BUT there's lots of usability downsides which make it harder to use. Check out the movie mode page on the features section of my 5D2 review at cameralabs . com!
@ryanfr320 No, like all pro review publications, they're on loan from manufacturers and returned after testing.
A multi-part Camera Labs video!? Are you ever tired, sir?
Happy Holidays!!
pretty good review
I agree it is confusing. Digital camera companies count the total dots for screens, which includes three (red, green and blue) for each 'pixel'. So a 920k screen has 640x480x3 dots. 640x480 is VGA.
Congrats on your prize! The 1D Mark IV is a 16 Mpixel sports camera, so if you're into landscapes, I'd get the 5D Mark II and 24-105mm lens if you want a Canon. Whatever you buy, please do so through our partner stores page at cameralabs . com to support us! Thanks!
That's correct. That's also why QVGA or 320x240 screens are called 230k.
At the start of the review you look particularly happy and excited, must be the enthusiasm of the 5D Mark II :p
I'd like to know which Camera do you have Gordon, thank you very much
Gordon Laing is a HERO! As voted for by my friends in the industry :P
I just bought a 5d2!! I love it!
How much did it cost? You may enjoy my Dino Bytes channel
@@cameralabs 17,000 shutter actuations, rated "like new" by MPB, $360! When it arrived I couldn't believe the condition! Not a scratch or any signs of wear. I will search for your other channel!
looks like a sick cam im gonna get one
wow thats a camera there. VERY nice looks like its very comfortable to use during heavy practice
The 5d mark 2 is great for pro photographers on a budget. It's good to use it with the battery grip because not only does it increase the capacity, but it provides a screen that let's you view battery info without going through menus.
Hi everyone, thanks for all your comments! Yep, the HD proved to be a bit of a challenge to record and edit, but it certainly looks better than the older videos! I hope to film future reviews in HD, although I have a few more standard definition ones I've already recorded for some upcoming lens reviews...
is all the newer vids u post gunna In HD, cause this is really nice
How is the AF on this camera? Looking to buy it tomorrow.
Thanks Gordon, you reviews are the Best. I am so tore between a Canon 5d2 or Canon 7D and even a Nikon D3s... Do you have any specific recommendation as to what you would think would be the best body... Thanks again, well done mate.
it depends on what photography you're into. I have 24-105 (comes with my 5d MkII) but would be happy to swap with the 24-70. the awesome f/2.8 on the 24-70 is quite an advantage under low-light.
hi, what would you recommend canon 5dmark ii or 7d. i was looking at buying a 7d but have found a second hand 5d mark ii for 500$ cheaper than a new 7d
Hi GDfromSMSA, I didn't see any black dots on my videos. I only saw them on a couple of still photos, and then only when viewing at 100%. You can see examples in my review at cameralabs...
In Live View, I'm fairly sure most newer Canon cameras have a quiet shutter mode. You do have to hold the release button (or some sort of button, I don't remember which), and when you let go the mirror cocks. So you'll have to mosey to a place where you can let the mirror slap back.
I haven't seen this full video yet but I know you love this camera Gordon. look at your smile. ;-) hehehe This year I'm buying the sx10 is. maybe first quarter of next year i'm buying a DSLR. Of course I'll check your vidz first.. nice reviews.. great help!
Hi JD95, I have limited time on youtube, but feel free to discuss your options in the official 5D mark II thread on the cameralabs forums...
@anestisk Thanks! I like the shirt too!
Nice review. I have this camera and absolutely love it.
I would never use a non full frame camera again.
Thanks, you're very welcome! Don't forget to check out the full reviews at cameralabs . com!
Very informative Thank you.
@MrPlaystationboy Probably the Nikon D3x or Canon 1Ds Mark III...
i cant wait to get my hands this baby
ha, queenstown. just been there. should've bought this camera before the trip.
What camera do u use to film your reviews Gordon?
Excelent review !
can u do reviews on more of a handycam or camcorder catagory? i would love some reviews on the sony vx series
Thankyou, I just bought a Canon 5D11 coupled with a 24-105 L series lense.
The HD movie mode was pretty impressive. You can see the quality now that we are able to watch it in HD on youtube.
Probably best to discuss the D60 on the D60 video page! PS - that is a good beginners kit though.
Thanks a million, great review :)
Woohoo for HD. Awesome!
Yeah the HD is definitely a keeper. The only thing is that it's a bit choppy at times.
Great review man.
That was an excellent review...i am confused with the available choices of semi-pro dslr available...should i buy nikon d700, 5d mark ii or sony A900??? Which one do u recommend???
Thank you Gordon. I just bought one from Japan on Ebay wit 36k clicks.
pro camera guy!!!! i love you for teaching me the steps!! haha great!!
How do you like the Panasonic Lumix DSLR's. I like the leica lenses on Panasonic like I have on the DVX100 that I use for filming but now I want a good SLR after playing around with the FZ-35 for a year... So what do you recommend?
i'll probably wait for the mark iii to come out if it ever will!
hey gordon,
i was interested if the processor of the 5d mark ii is fast enough to to deliver continuous 30s exposures one after the other. my old 1ds mark ii was not capable of it. thx
should i hold off from buying the canon 5d mark 2 for the replacement or should i get it now because im not sure when the replacement comes along?
No need to type in captials Tom! Or to ask the same question twice - I've answered on the channel page.
@kycruisecrazy Yes the 5D mk2 is a very popular camera used by a very percentage of professional wedding photographers.
macro depends on the lens you use.
@Xyb3rTeCh If two sensors share the same technology, then the one with the physically bigger pixels will be more sensitive. Full frame sensors are physically bigger than cropped frame ones, so if their resolution was the same, then the pixels on the full-frame model would be bigger, and therefore more sensitive. This means the signal from the sensor doesn't need to be amplified as much, which means less noise.
Great video 💯👍
@ Duct1198: they are all nice cameras. I personally own a Canon 5d mark ii and a buddy of mine owns a NIKON d700 and comparing images straight out of the box the Canon has nicer and warmer color, video mode, higher megapixel. However, the NIKON has more focus point and faster fps.
Best thing to do is take a test drive in them and make your decision from there. Hold it, smell it, kiss it, and which is best.
