The lack of education on that comment was unbelievable especially since the Fuji S5 Pro blew Canon away as the standard for celebrity wedding shoots around that era, along with the S3 .... Canon was still waiting in the wings behind fuji - and in today's mirrorless environment, still is.
      .... And just to be fair, I do like Canon cameras.

    I love my old 5D too. Some friends are constantly upgrading to the latest and greatest. In reality, any decent body, great glass, knowledge, experimentation, shooting raw, location, right time and patience will get the best photos. Cartier-Bresson had great success with Leica rangefinders, 50mm lenses and fast B&W film.

      I have the opposite problem. I'm constantly downgrading to the oldest and moldest. My eBay as-is 5D just arrived in the mail today, along with a 10D and THEY BOTH WORK! Same goes for the PowerShot A460 that accompanied them, albeit with some weird broken LCD pixels that somehow resemble a pirate ship in shape. I'm finding it's WAY easier to get obsessed with old forgotten gear than the new shiny stuff.

    I am a 5DM3 shooter. I bought mine new 8 years ago and loved the move from a 7D. I have always loved the full frame shallow DOF look. Mine hit 160K on the shutter this summer, so I thought this would be a good time to replace it. After a little looking and a failed eBay bid or two, I got one with 21K on the shutter for $800. It came with a few batteries, charger and a pinhole lens. I can see myself never buying another camera and being more careful with not taking too many throwaway images. I absolutely love that 5D's are coming back into the mainstream. I remember seeing all the mirrorless bodies come out and thinking to myself, I can't imagine feeling the need to switch to a new system (yes, I know lens adapters make it trivial) when my good old 7D works just fine. Well, about a year ago I finally decided to upgrade to a brand new 5DS R straight from B&H for $1500. Absolutely the steal of the century. That camera is absolutely insane and I sincerely doubt that I will be in the market for a new still camera for several years. If I need another camera, I'll probably just buy another 5DS R used, or maybe a MK III. I've shot on the R5, R6, and several A7's and I'm just really not interested at all.

    • @NGC1433
      @NGC1433 Před rokem +3

      Same here. I am very deeply disappointed and frustrated by ergonomics and usability of my Eos R. And no, not the touch thing, that's the least of my concerns. The inability to change Drive mode without menu diving(Configuring a shortcut button and scrolling a dial is a half assed solution to just having a fucking DRIVE button is a crutch)
      Lack of ability to switch to actual manual focus without going to menu, choosing AF tab, than page 4 and than selecting menu item - that is just genocide against photographers. Why isn't there a button or a dial for that?(The switch on the lens switches between functions of the control ring - focus or whatever you configured in camera, e.g. ISO or f-stop, and no I will not move focus from shutter button half-press)
      As somebody who owns cameras like Konica-Minolta 7D - which has a physical dial for drive(including exposure bracketing and multi-exposure), physical dial for all four AF modes, physical dial for metering modes, a physical dial for exposure compensation(with both 1/2 stop and 1/3 stop variants!!!) and a physical dial for flash compensation... All while being aesthetically pleasing, compact and ergonomic....
      I just don't get it. Looks like Canon only keeps the most inept interns...
      I mean, look at it, look at the images www.google.com/search?q=Konica-Minolta+7D
      It's not the most aesthetic thing but it has ALL the features and NO menus... It's a film camera.
      And trust me, it had plenty of menus for non-crucial stuff like winding film mid-roll, exchanging it for another roll, then returning and continuing that half-shot roll from where you left it.
      Going from classic Canons to R is like getting an infinite cardio stamina but both of your legs broken as a runner. Sure, it's eye-detecting phase autofocus covering most of the sensor is absolute blessing and godsent with lenses like 85mm F1,2 (which would be utterly and absolutely useless on a classic 5D, because it would miss all of those 3 times it would think it focused in a decade) But shooting anything in a changing environment with eos R just crushes my soul and wrecks my mental health.

    • @samuel_andreyev
      @samuel_andreyev Před 7 měsíci +1

      Ha ha yes. The EOS R is fine for some things, like filming video on a tripod (most of what I use it for), but otherwise for any kind of serious still shooting the paucity of physical controls is definitely sub-optimal. Also the controls that it does have are too small and awkwardly positioned, like the rear dial which is too rececessed. But again, it’s fine for shooting things that don’t move much or video. And it does have a very nice sensor.

The big issue these had was the mirror holder would break and the mirror would fall out, but canon came up with a fix. Luckily the one I bought had the fix done! • @jamespowers8826
    @jamespowers8826 Před rokem +2

    I used the original 5D back when it was the latest thing. Had two of them, in fact. When I bought them, I had Canon Professional Services calibrate the cameras focus to each other, and the lenses I had calibrated to the cameras. If you are lucky enough to get one that is in spec with the lenses you have, it is an amazing camera. I routinely made 13x19 prints. But the 5D does not have micro focus calibration, as later Canon's have, so if your camera and lenses aren't perfectly within spec, images with fast lenses will be soft. Then you have to send the cameras and lenses to Canon to be calibrated. Not just Canon's problem, all DSLR's need to be calibrated to the lenses for best results.
    All that said, I shot several hundred thousand exposures through those 5D's. Great cameras.

    I got my 5D classic a year and a half ago, from Japan for $230 (with Wasabi battery and a weird but fully functional charger). It's a very early version, with firmware 1.00 so I had to buy a 4GB CF card to upgrade the firmware to use my ancient 16Gb CF card that I used to for my 20D 10 years ago. (haha.)
    All being said, it was in a pristine shape. Looked like it was manufactured in 2022, not 2005! It still looks and feels like a brand new camera... producing amazing colors, texture and 3D feel.
    Receiving it was pretty much like the way you demonstrated in your video.... worry for the mailmans aggression followed by taking cat photos. Curiously though, getting camera gear from Japan is always super fast and never any damage to the package. Getting them within US - takes forever, and shippers abused to the max...

    Very nicely done. I think experiments like this prove what we all already know but the camera companies hope we forget: We've really had everything we need tech-wise to make amazing pics for many, many years now. The compulsion to continually upgrade is certainly more about good marketing and consumer boredom than it is one of necessity. The last few cameras I purchased were technologically heading in the opposite direction - things like a lack of a screen or a fixed 35mm equivalent lens to duplicate the look and feel of film shooting (with a healthy serving of presentism on the side). Another way of saying that - our cameras are SO good, we're to the point we're paying for limitations to challenge ourselves.

    serial number starts with a 0 so you got an original model.. I recommend you checking to see if it has the mirror repair as serial numbers starting with 0 or 1 had weak adhesive and the mirrors would eventually fall off. You can tell it's been repaired (Canon was doing repairs for some years) if you see a strip on each side of the mirror. Also rumors of the LCD from that era failing in some way too though I haven't experienced that.

    You can talk about the overall build quality of the original 5D... until the mirror falls out. Apparently Canon didn't understand how glue fails back then so they used the cheapest glue they could find for a $2,500 camera. It's a problem that revealed itself at first in humid environments but eventually affects every one of them. Mine took several years to fall out and naturally it happened the day before a three day tour of ghost towns in my state. Fortunately the camera works perfectly without the mirror, and since I was shooting through an infrared filter it wasn't like I was going to see anything in the viewfinder anyway.
    Canon repaired the mirror for free for a while and even if it happens now it's easy to repair by using the tiniest amount of superglue on the three mounting points. I did that and it's been working solidly for years since then.

    I always regretted selling my 5D ... so I just bought another for $200 (Surely the best bargain on the planet). I think my 40mm f/2.8 or my 50mm f/1.4 will live on it. I think it makes a perfect pairing with the 50mm, as a casual portrait camera.

    having used various Fujifilm, Canon and Sony cameras and using this camera for almost four years now i can confidently say that 5D classic hands down has the most amazing colors. specifically when it comes to portraits. The only thing tht i wish was better on them are the battery life. Since the camera is too old the batteries only last for like 150 to 200 clicks.

Same "old film like" colours as the Canon 5D Classic but feels much nicer to use (at least for me). The other good thing about Nikon: I can use very old nikon lenses without any fancy adapter. I have been shooting film for some time now however with prices rising i bought a digital canon tbe 5D mII to be precise i did a lot of research and i feel like the grain on the 5d classic looks pretty close to film. Which i like however i ended up the the mII because it cost the same and had mutch less shutter actuations. Unfortunatly where i live the 5d classics cost around 250 unfortunatly the mIi cost the same tho that was a good deal because those cost around 350 normally.
    And of course i dropped it the second day after i got it but it is a beast and countinues to soldier on with a few scratches.

      I think the prices are so similar because of how film-like the images seem to be on the 5d classic, also supply a demand, as they get older supply starts to dwindle. Most likely, I'm going to keep my 5d2 because it's more versatile... but I really do love the 5d classic.
