    The narrative writing here was impressive. Maybe you’re a naturally gifted orator, but at a minimum, lots of work went into these chapters. The story boarding, footage, and technical writing were on-point. A polished retrospective. 👏🏽

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Před rokem +2

      @@johnflanagan44 I think this would struggle for wildlife. The autofocusing isn't the best, and the higher shutter speeds which might require higher ISO certainly impact the usability as well. I'd say their are likely better options for wildlife -- though I'm sure it could be done.

    "Back in the day" (early 2000's), I shot with 5 and 6 megapixel cameras on crop frame sensors, and I was able to crop down to about 1/3 of the frame and still get great 8x10 prints, so the 5D Classic is a VERY viable option for someone wanting to do professional work on a budget. I was going through some old files recently, and came across a bunch of my photographs shot with the Canon 10D (6 megapixel crop frame sensor and same "special sauce" color science as the 5D), and i was actually surprised at how good they looked when I was "pixel peeping". My point is, don't be concerned about the megapixel count of the camera.....12 megapixel's on the 5D Classic is more than plenty to produce professional results in just about any genre' of photography. I LOVE the simplicity of this camera, and if someone were to make a modern camera like this, I would buy it in a heartbeat. It makes you go back to the basics of photography, which I feel is something that is lacking these days. I miss the days of pre-focusing and hyperfocal distance.....and that shutter sound!! Amazing!
    Thanks for posting this video! I love to see people keep the greats alive! Here is a video of a photo walk I did with the 5D and the 50mm 1.8. I have about $200 USD in this camera and lens:

    Great video. It is indeed a classic. Im an 18 year professional portrait shooter and Ive recently sold my Canon and Sony mirrorless gear and gone back to DSLRs, specifically CCD sensors, for the more filmic look. Modern CMOS sensors have become far too sharp and digital looking with HDR looking colors and zero character. I recently got a a couple steals on eBay. A Nikon D200 for $50 and a Fuji S5 Pro for $150. The Super CCD SR II sensor in that S5 produces excellent skin tones and colors, some of the best Ive ever seen. Guess thats why its a cult classic among portrait and wedding photographers. Its a shame Fuji stopped producing that sensor, id pay good money for an updated version in a mirrorless camera with modern features. This video reminds me I need to pick up a 5D Classic, loved the one I had years ago. One tip is if you are going to use any of these older cameras outside in the sun, you need to be able to read a histogram properly. Better yet, I bring my iPad, fire off some test shots and upload them so I can get a better look at how they are turning out and adjust accordingly. Have fun.

    • @Lonnie.G

      I want to try an S5 Pro so badly. It has a legendary reputation and you definitely got it at a steal. I haven't looked at the D200 before but I will check it out. And yes, I agree with you about being careful with exposure -- I should have mentioned that. The screen is a very poor indicator at that so the histogram is extremely helpful.

    around 10 years ago after leaving high school, this camera was the first 'big' purchase. I remember working and saving every single penny to get this camera after reading endless reviews online. I used this camera for 3 years paired with a 35mm 1.4, till this day those 3 years contain some of the most cherished moments and shots i have taken. Everyone talks about how there is something 'special' about the 5dc and they're 100% right. You have to shoot it to understand, its a classic.

    A joy to watch. Oh and I actually love the weight. It perfectly balances a heavier lens as well as makes me more stable on slower shutter speeds.. Which is something I truly lack in newer bodies; the weight and size, as well as button placements, which makes for a truer photographic experience (imo) as you were alluding to as well - going fully manual. I recently "upgraded" to a 6d mk1 due to them being similar, as well for video; but the upgrade has mostly made me come to love the 5d more (although focus calibration and sensor cleaning, as well as video, is great to have on the 6d I love the handling of the 5d so much more).

Occasionally I search CZcams for videos on the 5D just to see how knowledgeable photographers use it and how they compare it to modern cameras. The idea of using a 2005 camera today to get great images just fascinates me. This is one of the better videos. Well thought out, well presented and included great sample images. It's a great video about the classic 5D! I'm an owner of these camera too. The focusing problem, that you have mentioned can be eliminated, if you use only the center focusing point, because it is the most accurate from all of them. With this method, you can focus very accurately, even using manual lens with a proper AF chip adapter. I can easily focus with my Helios 44M @f2.0 where it is very soft and very hard to focus without the AF blinker or without split image focusing screen.

    Superb review, again thank you... I bought my first C5DC only three weeks ago, initially to use with my vintage lenses, it took two weeks to figure out the exposure settings but once I'd sorted that out I was away. A week after getting the body I bought the 50mm f1.8 STM, an amazing little lens and it works perfectly with the C5DC body... It's like using a vintage lens, but with AF... For the last ten years I've used Fuji, I still have the X-M1, for street work, the X-E1 for nature and the X-T1 for studio work, product and portraits... I love my Fuji's, but since I got the C5DC I haven't once been out with the Fuji's. The C5DC is simply an awesome camera... The colours are equal to Fuji in some cases, better... and the 12.8MP sensor is equal to the 16MP Fuji's I use... In short this camera will stay in collection and never leave me... A wonderful camera even today, near 20 years since it hit the scene... I would advise anyone looking to buy this camera to jump in and get one as soon as... Simply beautiful.

I have a Sigma that does not focus as well as a Canon brand, in terms of accuracy. So good points on that. I bought mine new. Thank you for this video, very nice. I loved the kid pics.
    A number of years ago I found myself being influenced by "influencers." I would become seduced by 5 extra focus points or some impossibly high (and false) ISO claim. Let's not even talk about the "need" for super high resolution. When I sat down and evaluated my purchases I was (almost) universally disappointed as the latest generation of the camera was really not that much better than its previous sibling. I started to focus on what I needed to take photographs that I was proud of, not what some paid CZcamsrs thought I needed. I discovered that it was a lot less than what I was originally sold.
    My best photos are camera-independent. Almost any camera could have taken them. I mostly use a 5D IV for pro work but I use much smaller cameras for pleasure (for instance a GR III). I picked up an original 5D a number of years ago for the heck of it and I have come to really love it. Less MP seems to add an organic quality to photos (that are still sharp). It is an awesome camera. The original 5D was a pro camera capable of being used for print, magazine covers, and portraits. That has not changed. Is it as capable as my Mark IV? Of course not, but my Mark IV isn't as capable as an R5 or R3... so what, I can still take really beautiful photos with all of the cameras. Your video was thoughtful and complete.

      Very well put and I agree 100% - especially that my favorite shots could have been taken on almost anything. Ironically, as someone who makes videos about gear, at the end of the day we often forget that it should all be a means to and end - that final photo - that captured moment. Whatever we use to help us get there is mostly personal preference. The gear matters, but not more than the subject matter. Thanks!

    Wonderful video! My 2 cents: if you wanna get cheap but amazing portraits, go with *EF 135mm f/2.8 (with soft focus)* . Or with even cheaper vintage manual lenses like the German *Pentacon 135mm f/2.8* (an adapter with a chip will confirm focus like any other lens). The Classic camera delivers classic look with classic lenses. Cheers!

      @@Lonnie.G agreed, I've been using that 135mm soft focus for years paired with the 5DMK3 , it's very very impressive for the price I paid, £89.99 just under a 10th of a price of the L counterpart and in my opinion it's just as sharp, the AF is loud but it's accurate and fast. And focuses well in low light.

    I own this since it released in 2005, and the image quality is the critical reason why I still keep it. Although the 9 AF points are not enough; the high ISO performance is far behind when compare with the modern camera; histogram is the only thing I trust on LCD; and freaky focusing shift on my EF 85 1.8 (not the lens issue as it is totally fine on 5D3 and 5D4 without adjustment). But after all, when open the RAW in Lightroom.... OK I decided to keep it no matter what.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! Yes basically -- from a frame of view equivalence. But the combination of different sensor size will result in a slight difference in depth of field at the same aperture and framing of subject. More importantly, the 27mm didn't exist at the time that I originally had a 5D and X-Pro 1 bodies so it was fairly unique. The only lenses that existed at the time were the original three (18, 35, and 60 mm). I did buy the 27mm back when the X-T1 came out, and loved that lens too though. I really want the new WR version because of the aperture ring

    4:26 for solely photography, the 5D is still worth using, not merely remembering. The sensor in the 5D is in a class of it's own beyond any other camera. Functionally, it's not a camera that's going to be suited to everyone, for example, it lacks video and if that's important to you, skip this camera. It's not the easiest to use and doesn't have all the newest features, again, if that's a priority, move on to other cameras. But, if what's important to you is how good the images you shoot look, this camera can't be beat. 12.8 megapixels is more than enough. 1600 ISO is more than enough, especially in the 5D because the ISO values are actually accurate on this camera. The tiny screen on the back of this camera is more than enough, all you really need is a histogram, and you don't even really need that if you understand basic exposure. Having said all that, I'm glad people overlook and/or disregard this camera because I know if I need a replacement for the one I've got in the unfortunate case that something might malfunction, and that's always a possibility but even more so with an almost 20 year old camera, I know there are still good ones available at a reasonable price on the secondary market. I plan to purchase at least a couple more in the next few months and put them in storage so I don't have to worry about it going forward, because I can't fathom ever wanting to shoot on anything else.

      The point I made is that there is no af micro adjustment setting built into the camera like there are on many cameras that came after. Agreed that the 50 1.4 is terrible from a QC perspective, but there are bad copies of every single lens that exist somewhere. Af micro adjustment would allow the camera to compensate for the lens shortcoming. That’s what I pointed out
