History of The Legend of Zelda (Mainline Series)

- The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved series in all of gaming. Over 30 years, the series has innovated game design, inspired countless other game developers, and changed the landscape of video games for good. To celebrate the launch of the eagerly awaited Tears of the Kingdom, let’s take a look at the history of The Legend of Zelda.
In the mid-1980s, Shigeru Miyamoto was working on Super Mario Bros for the Famicom, but began noodling around with an idea for a different game. Miyamoto was inspired by his youth exploring the Japanese countryside, and wanted to move away from the linearity of Mario to give players an adventure where they had to carefully consider their next moves.
The team worked up a classic damsel-in-distress tale whereby the hero, Link, would rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon’s lair on Death Mountain. It was a simple premise, but Miyamoto, along with Takashi Tezuka, went on to build something on top of it that would change the kinds of games Nintendo made. The Legend of Zelda remains as one of the most influential games of all time, and was the springboard for a franchise that would define Nintendo. In this episode of History Of, we examine the impact the series has had on gaming since its inception in 1986.

The most nostalgic is ocarina of time but i have to say the best overall has been Breath of the WIld
For me it’s a link to the past. Haven’t played breath of the wild yet but I’ll change it soon. Let’s see if it changes my opinion. Edit: I’m no US citizen so there’s why I’m not using the hashtag.
Be sure to use the hashtag #GameSpotGiveaway with your post so you are entered to win!
Breath of the Wild is a perfect game. #GameSpotGiveaway
I haven’t preordered a game since I was a teenager. I’m 43 now and preordered Tears of the Kingdom.
Same!
I refuse to preorder games because they always ship broken. And the updates always make the games better.
BUT this is Nintendo. And they are almost always the exception to the rule. I might not preorder it but I’m certainly getting it in short order
Game on, everyone!
@@smartmagis completely agree Nintendo has been on the ball the whole switch lifespan i’m primarily an Xbox guy and we just get broken games all the time😢
That’s awesome. I love how multigenerational this game is I still remember my brother giving me his old copies to put myself
I'm 43 as well and managed to pre-order the collector's edition. So yeah, I'm pumped.
I've come to the conclusion that the Triforce is basically a giant game of rock-paper-scissors between Ganon, Link, and Zelda.
Ganon beats Zelda (Zelda gets captured by Ganon)
Link beats Ganon (as per most games' story)
Zelda beats Link (usually Zelda tells Link what to do)
I love this franchise so much, its been a major part of so many childhoods including my own. I cannot wait to continue my journey to Tears of the Kingdom and see what it has to offer
So hype 😄 !
Yeah same
Hi
A lot to offer
Heroes get remembered but legends never die

@J01789 have you seen The Sandlot?
“Every games have a story, only one is a legend” - Wind Waker ad I saw back in 2003
A link to the past is my personal favorite of the Zelda games. Can't go wrong with nostalgia
I've played Nintendo growing up but mostly pokemon, mario, smash bros, etc but I was never into any Zelda game. I saw a link to the past on the nes emulator on switch about 3 days ago and said let me give it a try. I finished the game last night and It was one of the best games I've played. There was so many small details, unique items, and the different types of bosses were so cool. Easily one of the best games ever made especially for that time
I started with the og game but ALttP was the gamechanger.
A Link To The Past was the very first game I ever played. I still play it all the way through at least once a year.
The open world and exploration of “Breath of the Wild” made it one, if not my favorite in the series. So replayable!
A Link to the Past definitely is my most memorable Zelda experience. Breath of the Wild is a very close second. Tears of the Kingdom looks like it may knock both titles off their place on my list.
Yeah it absolutely knocks everything else off.
Fun fact: Dig-Dug was the first groundbreaking game!
😂😂
I was gonna say E.T., but no that’s just ET getting stuck in the ground. And the cartridges getting stuck underground.
This franchise...agh its so good. It's what really got me into gaming. I love everything about it, the lore, story, phenomenal music, gameplay, puzzles, characters, worlds, etc. Nintendo has put so much work into the series and it's so worth the wait. 37 years and 20 games (not including spin-offs), that's absolutely *amazing.* Zelda games aren't just video games, they are experiences, you really feel like you are Link, a hero. You really do feel like you saved a whole Kingdom. Link and Zelda are really special characters, and I can't imagine Nintendo without them. Now, we are 11 days away from Tears of the Kingdom and I *cannot* wait to jump into Hyrule again.
Oh and also, we have the best fandom, love you guys
Weird that the things you said were praised in Phantom Hourglass were actually the things everybody said they hated, especially at release.
Favorite legend of Zelda game for me is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Mainly because believe it or not, that was the first ever video game I ever played and ever since then, I’ve been hooked to video games!
Man, just the intro theme for A Link To The Past gives me goosebumps. That game created my love for gaming as a whole.
Not only was this a fantastic video but I love all the new shows Gamespot is putting out, amazing work ❤
Zelda link to the past was the first Zelda game that I completed in the series. It's one of my top 5 favorites.
This is such a great summary. Thank you!
Your commentary on Breath of the Wild is the best summary of the game I've ever heard. Spot on.
The big 3D Zelda games are so rare. Between even 2 of them, they practically define generations and even eras.
This video is a masterpiece! From someone who always loves games but never had a chance to own hardware and Zelda games, this video offers such a good summary and history!
that zelda song is FIRE
such a thoughtful Zelda tribute! thanks Lucy!!
This is so incredible thank you Lucy! Gamespot is spot on! Thank you!
we gotta show more love to shigeru miyamoto. father of gaming
Yes, I agree. Mr. Miyamoto is an absolute legend.
Theyre all incredible games I have loved the whole series but started on Ocarina of Time in the 90s. My favorite franchise in gaming
imagine living in the age that even though you're working on video games for a living you still needed to show up to the office in a shirt and tie.
I remember the Minish Cap as my first ever Zelda game I've played (Gameboy Advance was my first proper game console ever) and I did not understand a thing in it (English isn't my native language) although the game's style somehow made me think that one day I will understand and finish it.
Then I got and NDS and mostly played Mario and Pokemon. I tried Spirit Tracks there since artistically it looked similar to Minish Cap, but alas, I still couldn't fully understand the game and presumably left the game and Zelda altogether.
I once own a Wii, but home consoles were never my thing especially since that console had a lot of motion oriented games, so no Skyward Sword to try.
Things changed when I got myself a 3DS and booted up Ocarina of Time 3D, swearing that I would finish it no matter what. And man what an amazing feeling to finally grasped the wonders of this franchise.
Naturally I looked for the previous titles and also finally finished Minish Cap and Spirit Tracks. I can say that my absolute favorite is Wind Waker since the art style is captivating, the characters are very expressive and story is so good, a complete package.
Breath of the Wild reminded me of that game in some way, mostly the exploration part which is what I love the most from this franchise.
I'm just amazed to see a developer and fans that are both equally passionate and very happy to be part of it. Tears of the Kingdom will sure be a hit that'll be talked for years to come
(Oh you actually read all this? And left a like? Well thank you, and take this 🍪)
BotW got me into the franchise but I think Wind Waker was my favorite title. I think BotW is one of the greatest games ever made but Wind Waker art style really hooked me. #GameSpotGiveaway
So lovely to hear Lucy's voice!
So glad to see @Limcube featured at 24:04
Buzzing for next Friday to play Tears of the Kingdom and will probably go through BoTW before it again to pass time and refresh myself. Zelda has always been something i've looked forward to even since the 90's and it's never disappointed me.
I've always thought that The Legend of Zelda was heavily based on the movie "Legend." Theirs a overwhelming amount of parallels between Zelda and Legend. Protagonist has a green outfit, Tom cruise has to save the princess who has mystical powers, The power of the unicorn and the triforce have the power of creation, both of the villains are demon lords, and both have fairies. I'm sure theirs more I just can't remember them all.
Awesome video
the legend of zelda has been my favorite game franchise for decades. the franchise has been consistently good since 1987.
Guilty of only playing Ocarina and BoTW so this was a great history lesson. Also, FPS podcaster Lucy🤘
Fantastic Video Lucy!
Great video
Majora's Mask is definitely my favorite game in the series! The darker tone and the time pressure really makes it stand out! #GameSpotGiveaway
Id love to be able to play Twilight Princess HD on the Switch. The Wii version holds up ok but really shows its age. Also, good luck finding a Wii or WiiU
That and WW HD in 60fps would be amazing
Zelda is Link. Link is Zelda.
Wait, They all have been Zelda all along?
@@nayosparks always have been

That claim about Chris Houlihan being a contest winner isn’t actually officially confirmed.
Loving TOTK. Already 60 hrs in
I love the Zelda series ❤❤❤
Twilight Princess is a 10/10. Most of these games are. But i feel like these days twilight princess doesnt get the recognition it deserves. Its one of the best. Dont overlook it, its one of the funnest and grandest quests in the series. Yes it is partly ocarina of time done again but that doesnt take away from how good the game actually is.
More good than bad, the dungeons are great, wolf Link is so much fun, Midna is best support and sword skills were a great addition. Hyrule field is empty, those annoying kids, that annoying girlfriend, that slow opening. It's not my favorite game but it's up there.
TP is good, but it bored me in a lot of parts.
TP got me into the franchise, so it will always be important to me.
I wouldn’t say tp is overlooked at all. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed games in the whole series I can’t go 5 minutes without hearing someone ask why it’s not on switch yet
TP was the best selling game in the series before BOTW came along, and it’s still very popular today. It’s had plenty of recognition
21:42 Damm that audio quality
I've literally only played Breath of the Wild so this will be useful for me 👍
New gamespot pfp!!!
8:32 still a threat
Minish Cap was my first Zelda title game, and I've played every Zelda title forward. My favorite Zelda game is BOTW.
You somehow mixed up the GBA Four Swords with the GC Four Swords Adventures. Two completely separate games.
No gamespot link was named link because zelda 1 was going to have time travel. The idea was scrapped due to limitations but the name link got to stay.
a brand new, new show
My favorite thing about the Zelda series is how it tells a simple yet compelling story paired with simple yet compelling game play ever time #GameSpotGiveaway
my favorite TV show inspired my favorite 2D Zelda game
Why no mention of the links awakening remake? You mentioned the re releases for ocarina, majora, and skyward sword?
They didn’t even mention the DX version which is when it was remade in color for Gameboy first, and then getting the Switch remake later.
It's criminal how little they talked about ALttP.
7:52 Hey over here!
My favorite game is the very first Legend of Zelda game on the NES.
When does embargo release?
Windwaker is my favorite Zelda. I loved the exploration of the sea and the calmness of sailing. #GameSpotGiveaway.
15:03 you forgot to mention having friends on that list
Twilight Princess is the bar for Zelda games. Best combo of gameplay, story, & graphics.
Such a great overview of the series in under 30 minutes. I actually had a similar idea for a video I want to make where I show a little bit of each game (at least the main ones) to show someone who's unfamiliar with the series, with an emphasis on showing the sizes of the maps to put Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in perspective.
3:39 Whoa Oh...
Everyone cashing in on Tears of the Kingdom hype!!
Best game series ever and nothing comes close.
off topic but bringing this game to the big screen is gonna be a difficult task. I mean Link is gonna have to talk to assist character development and the story. However if we were to get a movie of it, I hope it's similar to the style and storytelling of twilight princess or skyward sword.
Ocarina would be the best begining. majoras mask 2nd and twilight princess 3rd.
@@Rypanda1 I think SS would be a great choice, instead of making everything chronologically confusing for movie goers. Nice and simple, here's the first story, the master swords origin and the reason why every Link and Zelda going forward will be different.
@@nworder4life true as Well! I Would still love to see a oot adaptation or even a wind waker adaptation on the big screen. both are epic
@@nworder4life I don't think that games would resonate with players. Twilight Princess would be the most suitable for film because it harkens back to the Lord of the rings. It's more grounded
There is absolutely no reason for Link to talk.
As Egoraptor says Mega Man X is a sequel. Ocarina isn't actually all that different than the other zelda titles prior
Im thinking that dueling peaks in botw, are a reference to twin peaks.
Pretty sure his name was link because the original engine was supposed to involve travel between worlds and he was a link between them, not between player and game.
#GameSpotGiveaway Majora's Mask will always remain my favorite. On the heels of Ocarina, it felt so much stranger and the character schedules added a lot of replay value if you missed something.
#GameSpotGiveaway...My favorite is BOTW. I love the open world action and the length of the game as well. Honorable mentions to the original Legend of Zelda and ALTTP.
Ocarina of Time on the DS has to be my favorite #GameSpotGiveaway
Tear of The Kingdom #GameSpotGiveAway
15:02 what she means is not everyone had friends. Much less Zelda fan friends
Im hyped for tears but still havent beat botw. I will get around to it eventually..
The Legend of Zelda IS pretty Rad
Just realised how few Zelda games I've played. ❤ Lucy
Minish Cap's definitely my favorite #GamespotGiveaway

I think my favorite Legend of Zelda game so far is Breath of the Wild. It’s just so open and encourages more creativity than any other game I’ve played. The remake of Link’s Awakening on Nintendo Switch gets an honorable mention just for being so adorable!
Here I am at 29 realizing Navi is short for navigator…
Gamespot why do you keep changing you’re logo?
Absolutely loved Breath of the Wild - it has to be my current favorite! Will be playing Tears of the Kingdom on the release date, and am really excited to try out some of the new features! #GameSpotGiveaway
Ok, Phantom Hourglass is not praised for either the touch controls or the temple of the ocean king
WRONG
he was called Link originally because of an old storyline about time travel that he was to be a "link" between two times.
No mention of Hyrule Warriors or Hyrule Warriors 2?
Those are made by a different company. Just like the CDI games, not considered cannon.
Those are spinoffs not main line. Although, some do have story implications its a seperate universe.
So far my favorite has been breath of the wild. I am so pumped to get in to tears of the kingdom.
#GameSpotGiveaway
Wasn't he called link because the original game was suppose to have time travel and he was the link between the last and future.
Yep, immediately pegged that and went "nope".
Yes, but the reason they gave in the video is the reason why Nintendo kept the name even after scrapping that concept.
I believe he’s supposed to be the link between the player and the game
@@linkheroofspiritsakatrains4812 In a largely forgotten 2012 interview between Shigeru Miyamoto and Game Kult, Miyamoto talked about Link’s design and shared this fascinating historical tidbit in the process:
“Link’s name comes from the fact that originally, the fragments of the Triforce were supposed to be electronic chips. The game was to be set in both the past and the future, and as the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link.”
@@Jayghopkins interesting
