So, uh, I briefly turned off comments, and for reasons that I assume make perfect sense, all comments that were on this video before were deleted permanently. At least, that's what happened as far as I can tell.
So, disclaimer: This is an entirely subjective analysis of the series, and thus is down to my opinions. Additionally, it was made from the perspective of playing every game, in a row, back to back, from October 2022 to January 2023. Historical precedent and context were (for the most part) not taken into account when ranking each game. Also, with the exception of the bottom two entries, I love every single game on this list. Even number 18 is a game I would consider amazing, so if one of your favorites didn't end up in the top ten, it's not that it's a bad game. It's just, all of these games are so great, I had to rank SOME of them lower down.
Dude is a gender neutral term but I’ll respect your wishes :)
I’m 16 years old, not a 90s baby whatsoever, but damn do I love Ocarina of Time
it’s okay, really it’s not bad at all… personally, i prefer majoras mask as it’s a game i grew up with and my favorite game ever so nostalgia and bias is heavy on that opinion … i just like how it took OoT and flipped the script into some insane psychedelic depressing amazing game
That fucking game locked behind the premium online
Ocarina of all Time. It's the best out of them all.
Fr
The characters of Twighlight Princess really make it for me. The beginning of the end dungeon starting with a team of hyrule freedom fighters, one guy with a freaking bazooka, bum rushing in to help the hero seige the castle was fantastic. It was a dark game, but that made the light of the characters shine even brighter. Also... sick dragon fight.
Oh, absolutely. Twilight Princess has some of the best writing and characters in the series, hands-down. I love the characters in the other games, even BOTW, but Twilight Princess absolutely nailed it. I've seen a couple critiques of that resistance moment, but honestly, I love it so much, even if I can poke fun at it.
And yeah, we love a good dragon fight.
Stalord is definitely top ten Zelda bosses of all time
the final dungeon is a bit underwhelming, too short and less inspired than most of the previous one. Still, it is a good game.
While I could never fathom Ocarina and Majora excluded from the top 5, I absolutely love hearing a different perspective for once. Respect to you sir
This raised something really interesting for me about the time-bound-ness of games. I do think there's something about experiencing games in the context of when they came out that fundamentally changes the experience.
My dad bought Link to the Past on release - I was three. He completed the initial trip to rescue Zelda and thought it had been a great game, well worth his money if fairly short. He then realised he had THREE MORE dungeons to complete... then hyrule castle, then seven more in the dark world, the tower, ganon!
I think the thing you have to keep in mind is that LttP pretty much invented the concept of dungeons in a way that we might recognise them today. Themed, with puzzles that build on top of other puzzles like a rubik's cube, with genuinely scary bosses. It was also - hear me out - graphically staggering. The doors to the boss lairs were terrifying and imposing. The music filled the player with dread. It took him 6 months to finish the Ice Palace, because the idea that what you did in one area could affect what you did in another sounded as insane as saying you could lick the screen to recover health.
It's probably clear by now that for me LttP is what a Zelda game IS, so my ranking would basically be how much does it capture the spirit of LttP, and that's probably a poor account of how good the games are in themselves.
My only consolation is that in 30 years, someone will release a video (or something?) where they say BotW was an open-ish world puzzle game with nice music, a slightly silly fuzzy art style and controls that are awkward because you can't just think your way there, and you'll end up writing something similarly long and rambling!
I’ve only played a little bit of it, but your thoughts on LttP was exactly mine on Ocarina of Time.
Considering importance, though, Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Breath of the Wild, and probably the original Zelda should all be in the top five.
I remember playing Twilight Princess when it came out, and it was very good, but felt very derivative of OoT.
I like Breath of the Wild a lot, and have sunk untold hundreds of hours into it, but it doesn’t surpass Ocarina of Time personally, but I can respect those who put it as their favorite. It’s probably my 2, but I haven’t played a bunch of Zeldas.
Oh, absolutely, the original context of playing the games changes a LOT. I mean, being honest, Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild are the first Zelda games that I got and beat at release; hell, I bought a Nintendo Switch and BotW basically the day they were released!
I know I didn't exactly sing its praises here, but to be clear, A Link to the Past IS an absolutely stellar game, and you're right about it basically being what a Zelda game IS. I've beaten it a few times myself, and it's a lot of fun - hell, there are some parts I'd argue it does better than Link Between Worlds! The only reason it ranked so low is just because I also loved the other games on the list, and I had to rank them all somewhere, so this ended up being how they fell.
But hey, if someone does make that video making fun of BotW, I'll either be fervently defending it in the comments, or overjoyed that the series has gotten even better since then. Only time will tell!
Yes. I had a similar experience as your dad. Tgis was my introduction to zelda. I was 12 ish when this game came out and on vacation at my aunts house. I remeber picking this game up and could stop playing it. The whole dark world concept was so good. This game was magical and everything you stated above. It will always be my #1 zelda game.
iv played most Zelda games on release since OoT with the few exceptions the 3 four swords' games it's the game franchise that gets me to buy Nintendo consoles, that's probably why i didn't buy a wii u.
your right ranking these games is a in context is a thing for example the oracle games for me are my number two (i count them as one game)
im also going to say the "texture" of a game is also a thing for me BotW is a fantastic game so many things done flawlessly but how it does dungeons and story doesn't quite feel like a zelda game.
Nice work. It's fantastic to see so many of the different perspectives with Zelda.
Just finished four swords adventure yesterday in single player mode (first time play through), honestly one of the best Zelda games. The only complaint was that each kingdom had the same setup of three stages to complete. The puzzles in the game were extremely satisfying though. It played surprisingly well in single player mode. I never felt like I was hindered by not having a team.
This list just hurts my soul.
Dude I had to stop the video at number 11, Fortnite has fried they brain of these kids
just reading this comment this saved me 26 mins of my life by not watching this, thank u dude
it’s just a list and its his opinion. get over it.
For real. The placement of LTTP and OOT and then you place Link’s Open World Cooking Simulator as #1 :(
@@Matus0919 man has played every single zelda game and you assume he's just a kid addicted to fortnite 😭
Oracle of ages > Ocarina of time
In the words of Will Ferrell “YOUR F*CKING HIGH!”
Link to the Past was my favorite for a very long time. I enjoyed Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but I never really went back and played them again. But I have went back and played Link to the Past a lot. Even played it again recently on the switch. When Twilight Princess came out it became my favorite, even after Link Between Worlds, which became a close second for me. But they were all dethroned by Breath of the Wild. I love it completely. I even enjoyed the weapons breaking.
This list making me realize I'm getting old lol I respect u putting out a list like this bro
"What kind of complaint is 'the game is linear'?"
I love to hear you say that. If someone prefers non-linear games that's fine, but I don't like to see a review complain about a game being linear without any further elaboration, as if linearity is an objectively terrible decision.
Someone please explain this to eiji aunoma!
I think the Oracle games are well due a remake with Link's Awakening improvement of life features.
Confronted with your top 4, I probably would have placed WW 4th as I remember being disappointed with the number of dungeons. I didn't feel like side quests and exploration made up for it as much as in MM. Anyway, good list; it's difficult to rate such an amazing and iconic series as they all have their pros and cons and for a lot of them, what is better than another can come down to really minor points.
Wait, you were disappointed with Wind Wakers 5 dungeons,, so I'd hate to think how you'd criticise Breath's _Zero_ dungeons!! I certainly hated Breath dropping them; sometimes being _too bold_ & risky just isn't the best play - especially when _everything_ else you acquire Breaks. I just can't rate Breath above a 6/10 (and only that due to the Zelda fanboy in me) but it's _so_ overrated. Tears does look a ton more exciting on the face of it thankfully - _much_ more like a Zelda game!
@@netweed09 yeah, it was a shame not to have the traditional dungeons and the divine beasts weren't quite the same, but then I knew that it was a radical departure from previous games in its open world style. When Wind Waker came out I was a fair bit younger and I haven't fully played it more recently so I mostly go by what I remember of how I felt then.
@@netweed09 I agree with your point about dungeons, but i think you're being a little overcritical. While it isnt a 10/10 for me its still a 9/10. I think for every small thing it does wrong, it does a massive thing right.
Amazing video, you deserve more subscribers!
I'd personally put OoT and MM (the N64-versions) in the top 5 simply because Randomizer exists. I do enjoyed BotW, but it's certainly not the best for me. It still suffers far too much from standard open world game design and has far too much empty space, shrines are kinda boring and repetitive, collectibles (Korok seeds) are awful and both story and dungeons are weak. The physics system is great though and one of the reasons why BotW is much better that the typical Ubisoft game.
A link to the past not being notable? This hurt my soul. This was my introduction into LoZ and is in my personal opinion the BEST top over Zelda game in the series.
“Today I’m ranking the Zelda games in a way that will get me the most hate possible”
Great list! While mine is very different from yours, I totally understand where you are coming from and your explanations were great! Amazing and super fun video! You’ve earned my sub!
What footage were you using for the Majora's mask 3ds clip? Is there something I'm missing there?
I was using footage from BeardBear that used a modded version of either Majora’s Mask or Majora’s Mask 3D (not 100% sure). For the most part, it just looks like a visual overhaul mod, putting everything on one screen and making it HD, but there are some more substantial changes from the 3DS version in the full thing (ones I purposely steered clear of while editing).
@@sorio99 Heard. Thank you
Glad to see Skyward Sword get some love finally! Underrated Zelda game for sure. Twilight Princess is my favorite tho.
That is something we don’t hear everyday haha
Honestly the part of this ranking that pains me the most is seeing Majora 3D over Majora 64. I hated a lot of the changes they made in the 3D version, especially the lack of more “disturbing” textures (they did the same with Ocarina 3D, unfortunately) and the changes to the way Zora Link controls underwater. Also, the fact that each boss has an obvious weakpoint makes them a lot more of a cakewalk. I will say, the updated Bomber’s Notebook is solid and I think I prefer it over the original, but every other change just rubs me the wrong way.
- Blame PH and ST because I couldn't figure out the controls, which become intuitive after an hour of playing.
- Put OOT in 11th place, which is recognized by everyone as a masterpiece.
- Consider that a bad remake of MM 3D is better than the original.
- Very controversial and linear SS reached the third place.
Are you sure you've ever played Zelda?
- They became intuitive for me quickly as well, but intuitive doesn't necessarily mean good.
- Most of the games are recognized as masterpieces by at least somebody, and taste is ultimately subjective.
- Ultimately there are positives and negatives to the remake, with it ultimately being personal taste which outweighs the other.
- Key word being controversial, meaning some people loved it, and also linearity is not some great sin that is universally despised.
And yes, I have played Zelda, I played every game in three months, that's why I made this stupid video.
Great video!!! Really liked that you spoke your opinion without caring what other people think! :D
Just to let you know, Tri Force Heroes is a main entry in the franchise, as is the two Four Swords games. All three are confirmed into the timeline, they all three are canon.
and all three are the worst
Respectfully the worst list I’ve ever seen in my life
Really nice video!!! suscribed.
Man, I'm definitely biased since it was the first Zelda game I ever played, but I really have a soft spot for Phantom Hourglass. Maybe it's the unique map drawing mechanics, maybe it was Linebeck, maybe it was the awesome music (some of the best in the series imo), maybe it was the unique dungeon design, including actually making the boss key a huge item you had to carry around on your head and actually made getting to the boss much more of a challenge, maybe it was the Temple of the Ocean King, which honestly may still be one of the coolest and most challenging Zelda dungeons ever what with the absolutely terrifying Phantoms that one shot you and you cant even kill till near the end of the game and the brutal time constraint, but Phantom Hourglass will always be one of my favorite titles.
You owe Ocarina of Time and A Link To The Past an apology for what you have done
What I've done? You mean making a CZcams video for my own personal satisfaction where I called them good but not my favorites?
Seasons and Link to the Past were my childhood and it hurts seeing them so low :(
loved this video, it’s so fascinating to see other people’s zelda opinions. the difference in how each game appeals to different people is what makes them great i think! keep it up >:)

18: Tri-Force Heroes
17: Phantom Hourglass
16: Four Swords Adventures
15: Spirit Tracks

11: A Link Between Worlds
10: The Minish Cap
9: Oracle of Seasons
8: Oracle of Ages
7: Twilight Princess
6: Link’s Awakening
5: The Wind Waker
4: Majora’s Mask

The twilight princess hd pack for dolphin emulator cranks up the gc version to be above the Wii U version imo simply Bc you basically can have cross save between gc, wii,Wii U and pc/ Mac
Good video, but I felt like your age definitely showed with a few of your criticisms of the older games. I’m a 38 year old Zelda fanatic that grew up with the NES titles and I own every single game on its original format. A link to the past and Ocarina may not have aged as well as a game like Wind Waker, but I felt like your review and low placements completely dismissed what groundbreaking achievements they were for their time. That’s something you really need to consider, otherwise your top games will simply be the most recent.
Personally, whilst I enjoyed BOTW and poured over 400 hours into 100% completion on Master Mode, it was a great game, but not the best ‘Zelda’ game. It had the best open world and by far the best gameplay mechanics, but it lacked a real sense of adventure that trawling dungeons gave me in previous games. There really aren’t too many memorable moments, bosses or themes. Think Forrest temple in Ocarina. Arbiters Grounds in TP…. BOTW shrines blend into 1. They all look the same. The divine beast all look the same. The bosses look the same. Nothing stands out!
My top 5 would be:
5 - BOTW
4 - A link to the past
3 - WindWaker
2 - Twilight Princess
1 - Ocarina of Time
I entirely agree! Very underrated comment. It's true that dungeons and a more progressive storyline were missing in BOTW, but I still loved it for the fantastic exploration it offered. That makes it a great Zelda game nonetheless.
Great video 👍
I definitely agree with you on A Link Between Worlds being amazing, 100%ing it was awesome. Definitely in my top 3.
A Link between Worlds is just a Link to the Past remake.
@@Clery75019 with a crappier mechanic and terrible weapon renting system
I personally woulda put ALTTP in top 10, I just can't get sick of that game but who knows maybe it's because of nostalgia, you definitely piqued my interest with your oracle of ages placement though, so I'm pretty excited to get into it here soon!
You and many many more would have put 'ALttP' waaay higher.
AlttP is surprisingly stand good even today
I thoroughly enjoyed that video, I absolutely don’t agree with you but I’m glad you put that together & i enjoyed hearing your opinions & the reasoning behind them. I’ll be checking out your other Zelda vid too, hopefully you’ll produce more 20+ minute Zelda content in the future.
Great job, thanks
I love ocarina and it’s one of my favorite Zelda games! But I will never get mad at others for not liking it that much.
Wow this list was a wild ride
if by wild ride you mean absolute shite, then yes
It’s not even that the list was bad, but the kid is acting like they were under attack the whole time and then act like they’re not phased. Dude, it’s your list, who the fuck cares. For example, “..and here I am liking twilight princess for being a good game. Shame on me, I guess.” My guy, get over yourself. They whine about people dismissing games and then dismiss people. (Skyward Sword entry, for example. people have very legitimate reasons not to like that game.)
But I think the grossest thing about this video is reading a line, abruptly stopping, and then starting all over again. Maybe people feel like they can relate to this kid, but it just had me feel like they don’t give a shit about their audience.
Like, yes, we all know this is a vanity entry, but you don’t have to be so arrogant the whole time. If you’re insecure that’s one thing - yeah, this is a wild list and not very popular - but just own it goddamn
I was a lil mad abt n64 oot placement but it was quickly changed when you ranked oot 3d top ten bc it was #1 the oot I first played and #2 was the first zelda game I ever played
Of the Zelda games I’ve played, Ocarina is my third favorite. And that’s just because it doesn’t give you a lot to do outside the main story with a good portion of the over world being empty space to get to the next story beat. Majora on the other hand has amazing characters and side quests that, while not majorly impacting the story, are still fun and interesting on your adventure as you traverse the world with your variety of mask abilities. For OoT, I felt like I was on a tour. But MM made me feel like I was having an adventure I could experience in my own way
I don't have some of these, but i can't give it a like just because of oot, mm, and alttp placements, but overall i loved hearing your opinions 😃
This was really enjoyable to watch great work.
I heard a saying from a gamesite once that said "the best zelda game is the one you played when you where 12".
Also true for me because when i think of the best it is Twilight Princess.
And for your number 1 i really liked the game but it wasnt a real zelda game for me.
No real dungeons and more of a really fun exploration game with a zelda skin on it.
But if the next one brings back dungeons it may be the new best for me :D
Interesting take on BOTW. It definitely doesn’t feel as Zelda as all of the other games but it really felt like the final manifestation of the original Legend of Zelda. I’m replaying all of the 3d Zelda’s before TOTK and I’ve been shocked at how much fun I’m having on my BOTW replay
my parents actually got me a 3ds with the ocarina of time when i was like 11 and it was AWESOME. I wasn't allowed to look at guides so having to do things without much help was so freeing, I really did love that game. I am, however, SUPER PUMPED FOR TOTK
0:51 - Triforce Heroes, Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures are officially considered "main series". Or else they wouldn't be in the official timeline and be called "The Legend of Zelda: ". (Also, Wikipedia considers them "main series") Aaand I think I've heart Nintendo referring to TotK as the 20th entry in the series which would only work if those games counted.
Great video!
ehh i dont really see an argument for skyward sword>twilight princess
i respect your opinion though, you're bold asf for putting oot and alttp that low haha
To be fair, like I said, they’re about equal for me, so that order was mostly just coin flip. Plus, I think if I was ranking the originals (GC TP and Wii SS) instead of the HD versions, I probably would’ve ranked Twilight over Skyward easily.
I get that this is a personal list, but #13 Link to the past is assumed to be the most replayed game and possibly has the most time spent on the game of all of the Zelda games.
Devoid of historical context, is easy to devalue alttp or the original Zelda game. But the original zelda is the game that made me a gamer. I don't factor in interface when determining how much I enjoy classics... Interface has evolved naturally over time, and I didn't notice the clunkiness when I played through it originally. Also, the non-linear nature of the original Zelda carried with it a great deal of replay... You still needed the triforce, but you almost didn't need the sword, or many items, and it was actually 2 completely different games if you managed to finish it--or named yourself Zelda. I'm more likely to replay nes Zelda on a whim than most of the others. All this to say I respect your opinion. :) also, skyward sword has am amazing lost, and my favorite zelda villain, girahim. However its spelled. :)
Love the Skyward Sword praise. I've had to come to terms that this is probably my favorite Zelda game ever. Its soundtrack, characters, world building, and art style blend together so beautifully to the point where I can actually forgive its flawed controls. When the Wii remote decides to work, it's an unforgettable experience.
my list is the ones that had an impact on me mixed in with gameplay.
majoras mask was my number one hands down no question asked i still boot up the game today.
oracle of ages was my number two but i personally packaged the two as one game and i truly hope for a remaster which plugs in the 3rd planed game while fixing its dated elements.
Ocarina of time was my first N64 game and first entry into zelda it holds a special place.
while ill agree BotW is a strong contender and a very good step into a new type of zelda open world however for me at least it draps the ball so hard on two things dungeons and its story telling.
im hoping to all that is holy that TotK does dungeons and storytelling better.
My favorite Zelda game is Skyward Sword. As an obsessed person with this game, I'm the first to admit that Fi can be annoying with her constant exposition and repetitive dialogue (something that the Switch version alleviated), and that newcomers have a tough learning curve with the motion controls (another thing that is now alleviated by the Switch version); however, none of these things (even in the original game) are enough to out-weight the highs of SS. The music has most of my favorite tunes in the series, I can basically hum all the dungeons and area themes from memory, the story is epic and has a greater focus in relation to other Zelda games with a few exceptions, the characters have a lot of charisma and hold deeper personal connections with each other and the player, the areas are fun to explore, the dungeons are brief but very immersive and fun to explore, the items are either pulled from the best in the series history or new and imaginative with creative uses, and the combat is fun and more complex than other Zelda games in comparison. I personally feel very engaged in combat, having total control of direction, outsmarting enemies, because they can parry your movements, just the concept alone is great, and I think it works very well.
My least favorite Zelda game (That I have played) is ... Breath of the Wild. (I'm so dead haha). Now, hear me out, out of the rest mainline Zelda games that I have played (TP, SS, OoT, M'sM, ALtP, ALBW, L'sA, and OoA) BotW seems to me as the most unbalanced Zelda game, as well as the one with more wasted potential. I'm not saying BotW is bad, in fact I think it's an amazing game, and I agree on the praises of it being revolutionary to open world and sandbox games, but talking based on my opinion alone and my enjoyment with it, out of all my Zelda experiences this is my least favorite. Things that I liked: The exploration of course, the way the game incorporates Hyrule's races, the freedom to solve puzzles in many different ways, the art direction, the music, and the physics engine. Now, what brings this game down for me are the inbalances like: the healing system that cuts out all tension by pausing the game entirely, the fact that there's no penalization for healing as much as the player wants whenever they want, the fact that combat lacks any significance by late-game, because the player is either too strong to have any challenge or just by the mere issue that the player does not want to break their strong/favorite weapons by fighting enemies that will give them weaker weapons in return. Now, for the wasted potential, dungeons, caves, and overall exploration of interiors is very lacking in this game. There are the Divine Beasts, but these are too brief, very simple in execution, (put 4 regular shrines together and you got the Divine Beasts in terms of puzzles), very similar to each other, and they don't have memorable bosses (aside from Thunderblight, but that's because of the sudden difficulty spike), and there were so many good options for exploration in interiors: Akkala Citadel, the Forgotten Temple, an ice cave or temple in Hebra peak to name a few. Now for the bas stuff: the story, more specifically the narrative. Basically almost all of the story, I'd say around 60-70% of it, has already happened and the player goes around learning about it by finding loosely connected memories, and reading exposition from characters' dialogue or diaries laying around, this is the most boring and unengaging way of storytelling. Thinking about it, the story sounds great and it makes sense, but it is badly told in favor of free exploration, which isn't objectively bad, but I'm talking about my taste and opinions, and I didn't like how they sacrificed my investment in the story to promote freedom.
I couldn't care about your personal ranking order, but it's strange to me that you call the game with a possessed child pulling the moon down in order to destroy the world and where the main story items (masks) you recieve are essentially the tortured spirits of deceased characters "one of the lighter" games in the series.
I more mean light in terms of "less total content", rather than "cheery tone". Think weight, rather than color.
@@sorio99 Majoras has more content than Botw lol
@Congo-uf4ce I mean, no? Like, even ignoring the very different approaches the game takes, the only thing Majora's Mask has more of is mini-dungeons, and maybe literal quantity of sidequests (though even that I'm not sure is true; even if, yeah, some of Majora's Masks sidequests are better than some of BOTW's).
Both games have four main dungeons, but MM has a final area that, at most, is a set of four mini-dungeons, while I would argue Hyrule Castle in BOTW is not only a dungeon, but the best dungeon in the game. Obviously the world is bigger in BOTW (though whether that's a positive or a negative is almost entirely a matter of opinion), and there are literal hundreds of collectibles. Even with the mini-dungeons, while I would say BOTW only has one real mini-dungeon vs. MM's nine, the shrines are basically the puzzles and combat encounters you would have faced in the mini-dungeons and dungeons, just made into their own thing.
Obviously, BOTW having more content doesn't necessarily make it a better game (I mean, FSA technically has more content than Four Swords, and I don't think it's better for it), but acting like there's less in the game than Majora's Mask is, an odd take.
@Sorio99 You really trying to compare those divinity things to Majoras Masks dungeons? Please.
Majoras had multiple masterpiece sidequests with so much more care put into them compared to every other game in the series let alone Botw.....proper dungeons and big in size, playing as different characters and solving puzzles in different ways while using those characters plus traversing the world with all three in unique ways. Collecting masks....you trying to compare that to 900 koroks, 120 shrines and 4 divinities. Yeah there might be alot of the same things in botw, copy and paste, but that is it.
Don't try compare MM to Botw my dude, it's like comparing hestus piece of crap korok reward to finding a hookshot.
The hate on Link to the past, RUDE!!!
I actually wonder if he really played it more than an hour.
@Metr0politan92 Yo, I've 100% complete it before, chill.
Come on... you cant be serious about ALTTP being in 13th place. It just plays so incredible well even to this day. The rest of the list is pretty good. For me its
5. Skyward Sword
4. A Link to the Past
3. Twilight Princess
2. Breath of the Wild
1. Wind Waker
The order is highly subjective but those are the best 5 zelda games hands down.
Wtf happened to Tri force heroes?
I like when people make list on there favorite games ranked that way I can compare mine. And I hate people who say you have to have this go there WHEN ITS YOUR PERSONAL LIST NOT THERES!
I personally really enjoyed minish Cap. Not my favorite title, but pretty high up there.
I too enjoyed Minish Cap but the Kinstone mechanic felt tedious.
Thank God the nature of opinions is that they're subjective & everybody gets to have their own!
As a fan since I began playing on NES in 1986, I'd have to rank the titles more like this:
OoT > WW > TP > ALttP > LA (DX) > ALBW > MC > OoS/OoA > LoZ > AoL > SS > MM > BotW > FS/FSA > PH > ST (Note: all other remakes & non-mainline Zelda games not included).
The primary reason BotW ranks so low for me personally, is because I feel that other than it's climbing system, interactive environments & dynamic physics system, which are all outstanding, the rest of the game is almost completely absent of everything I love most about Zelda games. If it had just three add'l things: uniquely themed traditional style dungeons, increased enemy & boss variety, and a competent story with an actual sense of progression, I daresay it might just jump into my top 3. As is, it is (IMO) a meandering, repetitious game filled with predictable battles, predictable treasure rewards, and a multitude of mostly uninspired, similarly designed, simple puzzle challenges. While some are utterly convinced this game is a true masterpiece, I think it's a truer statement to say what this game has mastered is simply a small piece of the core Zelda experience. To each their own tho!
I think there is so much variety in zelda rankings because at the end of the day, we arent ranking objective quality of the games (which would skew towards newer entries far more), but rather our experiences with them. How old we are and simply where we are in life when we play a game has a big impact on that experience. how you felt the first time you played OoT has likely made you feel that it will forever be your #1, regardless of what comes next. playing BotW for the first time has given many people (myself included) that same feeling.
Imagine someone making a homebrew port of phantom hour glass with update controls and graphics
I just have to accept one day that some folks just didnt mind Fi in S-S too bad as i did back when i played it on the original Wii..
…Along with Link with his sword in a perpetual charging motion, the empty overworld, the mobs who never got out of alpha testing (visually) - the thousands of toes i had to stab.
Saving grace was the twink, final Ganon encounter and the maybe the pirate ship.
I guess i am just longing for another Twilight Princess style game visually and in tone
I learned after trying to introduce a young one to the Zelda that OoT is not the game to do it. Which unfortunately is the acid test that this game is no longer the best Zelda game. Took me a long long time to admit this, but you don't realise until you have a young one saying it looks like Lego and having a hard time trying to use the action button because you're not completely square. Falling off bridges because you're not lined up right. It is what it is.
Haven't watched yet but I wanted to share that TriForce Heroes is a mainline game, even moreso than Four Swords/Adventures.
If you had to rank it though, where would you slot it in?
Dude what?? The negativity behind oot is blasphemy.
Dude I just wanted to say I was kinda shocked and disappointed while going through your list due to it not reflecting my own list in my head…
But wow, its so refreshing to see a take like yours. I think you described your reasoning well and I’m pumped to have discovered a perspective that’s helps me look at such a beloved and classic series in a new way.
Props
I shut the video off with Link to the Past. Link to the Past is one of the best Zelda's!!!!
Appreciate the video and the work you put into it but we are miles apart on the order. Good video
13:20???? The spirit temple boss is one of the best in the game! I played through and beat OOT for the first time in 2020 and it's amazing
Literally the best boss/dungeon
I never played most of these link games but I thought Four Swords Adventures looked like a cute game lol
Kinda like pikmin and links awakening in one.
13:21 I’m not trying to argue with the rest of this analysis, but twinrova is amazing
Skyward sword above ocarina of time and majoras mask, did we play the same game?
Still waiting for the oracle games to get remade the same way links awakening did
Link to the past at 13 I'm leaving
Bad enough that you put both DS games ahead of the original Legend of Zelda, but I had to completely tap out when you placed Link to the Past at # 13 !! I just cannot finish watching this tripe.
The DS games are better than Zelda 1 though, if you take out historical context.
Did i misses tri force heroes?
criminal list, just criminal
I’m assuming in the Minish cap part you meant to say best game by Capcom because Capcom was the one who developed it not flagship the amazing mirror developers.
Flagship developed the game, alongside Capcom and Nintendo. They've developed multiple games over the years.
@@sorio99 yeah but I always assume they were more of a codeveloper, but not the main developer making the calls for the game. And Based on what I’ve read, I’ve always assumed it was a Capcom and Nintendo making the shots for the design of the game itself. I could be wrong though, and I could’ve miss read the online articles on the game.
Why did you rank the 3DS games seperate from their originals while you lumped Links awakening with the remake. More was changed in Links Awakening than either of the 3DS remakes.
Eh? More was definitely changed in Link’s Awakening then Ocarina of Time, but if you don’t engage with the optional chamber dungeons, most of LA is the same core game as the DX version, just with some control improvements.
The honest answer for why I ranked them separately is A. Part of the goal was ranking the most current, updated and available versions possible, which for Link’s Awakening when I started the project was 100% the Switch version. But, since Ocarina and Majora both got 3DS remakes, but also versions for Switch Online, there was a grey area there, and B. I knew Majora’s Mask 3D was controversial when starting the project, so I didn’t want to just say “oh, the remake is better” without being able to back that opinion up with actual experience. Then, I did Ocarina 3D and the original just for the sake of consistency.
I mean, heck, you could also ask why I ranked the HD versions of WW, TP, and SS and not the originals, and it’s basically the same answer.
TL;DR: I wanted people to get mad at me for my opinions, not laziness.
@@sorio99 I understand what you are saying, but the changes for the other Hd remakes we’re minute. I’m ok with ranking the 3D seperately but with the new addition of switch online and the game and watch release for Zelda not being limited it’s super easy to play original links awakening and experience how much more was changed in the overhaul. It’s really almost a completely different experience, more so than games like WW and TP HD have.
I’m ok with the N64 3D remakes being seperate, but the QoL and graphical changes you pointed to as being upgrades worthy of seperation are even more prominent in the Awakening remake.
Thanks for replying to my comment and I will continue to watch your content! Great video
@@sorio99 Link's Awakening DX just release on Switch though.
As did Minish Cap at the exact same time, which I played on 3DS instead. I finished playing the games in January.
I don’t think u gave the games enough credit for being the first of their kinds and setting the stage for the rest of the series. But it’s cool that u have your own unique opinion and don’t just go with the easy choices
Sure, OOT was monumental for the time that it came out, but I think he is ranking them based entirely off of how they play today, in which case OOT doesn't really hold up against some of the other entries. I do love OOT, but I do agree with it being the weakest 3D Zelda.
@@DavidThe9966 I get what ur saying but the WORST is a strong statement. I personally only dislike skyward sword for the motion focused gameplay and small things like the art style and the beetle being boring lol. But idk man OOT on the 3ds made a lot of nice changes I think it holds up pretty well
@David Friström even today OoT still plays fine. I'd say it's still a better game than Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, and Majora's Mask and aged better than the original WW and MM. The only real issue with OoT is having to pause every time to switch boots but other than that the gameplay holds up very well.
This might be the most out of pocket list.
THANK YOU people flamed me for saying that Ocarina of Time was great but also has very odd/old controles and mechanics
I can't wait for Tears of the Kingdom! A Link to the Past will always have a special place in my heart but Breath of the Wild is just on a different level.
for me breath of the wild is overrated zelda games are better when they are not open world to this extent.
@@vincenthammons6705 that’s your opinion but I’ll still say you’re wrong. Growth in games are essential look at Pokemon people were complaining how repetitive it was until they started making changes. Sure the execution isn’t perfect but I’m pretty sure they’ll get better. Winning game of the year and still overrated? People are hard to please
@@Ryu.86 did not say I did not enjoy its just not worthy of being the best game it lacked in a lot of areas especially in dungeon diversity and lack thereof. the gearing system was something to be desired and they took away the badassness of getting your master sword by giving it a break limit. the DLC was joke to me a bunch of gear you ran around to get that looked cool but sucked and you could not upgrade. I did enjoy master sword quest tho.
@@vincenthammons6705 the shrine puzzles were very diverse tho they just look the same. The master sword’s durability was something I dislike too but it is what it is. I think the dlc was great even if I skipped most of it and I still think it was worth buying.
It's the only Zelda game I don't like. Broken weapons, slow jog stamina bar, slow climbing, no dungeons. Of course, half the internet claims it's the greatest Zelda ever.
Dawg, what brand of paint do you huff? Need to know because I haven't found a brand that gets me this stupid
I enjoyed this video quite a bit. Mostly can agree, at least for the games I’ve played. And I appreciate your top 5 being similar to mine, if not in the same order (Twilight Princess will ALWAYS be my favorite.)
Howdoes twinrova suck as aboss?
Thank you for ranking the games based on how good they are instead of how "important" they are. This may seem like an obvious thing, but literally every other ranking I've seen places half of the games higher than they really deserve to be (I'm looking at you A Link to the Past) while not giving games like Oracle of Ages their due praise. I don't necessarily agree with everything, (N64 games > gamecube ones IMO), but I appreciate that these are your opinions and not to satisfy anybody.
My picks:
Ocarina of Time 3D (10/10 on IMDb)
Link’s Awakening (Switch)
Twilight Princess HD (9/10, and pretty close to a 10)
A Link Between Worlds
Breath of the Wild
Oracle of Ages
Majora’s Mask 3D (haven’t finished the original yet)
Oracle of Seasons
Wind Waker HD
A Link to the Past
Skyward Sword HD
Link’s Awakening DX
Twilight Princess (8/10)
The Minish Cap
Ocarina of Time
Wind Waker
Skyward Sword
The Legend of Zelda
Spirit Tracks (7/10)
Phantom Hourglass
Haven’t finished Zelda II, but can’t give it more than a 6/10. Can’t comment on either Four Swords.
I dont think i could nane a favorite, but i can give a top 3 and bottom 3.
Top 3 for me in no particular order are:
Majoras Mask
A Link Between Worlds
Breath of the Wild
Bottom 3 for me are:
A Link to the Past
Oracle of Ages
Links Awakening (this one is at the bottom)
Great Bay temple gets pretty good after the 23rd playthrough
That's weird I got through it my first playthrough, it was collecting the eggs an the song was more of a challenge for me, I personally liked that temple an the boss fight. But dude fuck stone tower temple
@@eatsleepzeldarepeat1432 I'm a big fan of stone tower temple but holy FUCK do I hate playing the elegy of emptiness like a trillion times to get there.
Breath of the wild is the most fun Zelda, but has a major issue. There is basically no enemy variety. The boss of all the dungeons is the same guy. The enemy of all the combat shrines is the same machine. The only really challenging monster in the world is the same centaur guy. The puzzles are pretty incredible tho
See, on one hand, I want to disagree, because the enemies do have variations that make them more interesting, like the elemental variants of certain species, but on the other hand, the other games in the series ALSO had enemy variants to spice things up, but they ALSO had different kinds of monsters that required different approaches. My hope is that the new species in TOTK require a different approach to beat, because, yeah, it's a real issue.
@@sorio99 It's been like 6 years since i played BOTW, but I don't remember there being much of a difference between the recolored enemies or bosses. Maybe you had to use an ice arrow on the fire gannon instead of an electric one on the water gannon... but essentially it was the same 2 phase fight. The darker colored goblins maybe had more health?
I would personally rank Horizon Zero Dawn (a similar open world game that released at roughly the same time) above BOTW.... but I suppose it's just about how much you enjoy puzzles vs combat.
The disrespect against Ocarina and A Link to the Past is bizarre! I get it’s your opinion, but I can’t take seriously a list that hurts two games that are not only one of the best Zelda games, but some of the best games of all time
*My Top 6 ZELDA GAMES EVER, video in my Channel and Playlist!*
1. OCARINA OF TIME 4. Spirit Tracks
2. A Link to the Past 5. Legend of Zelda (1986)
3. Breath of the Wild 6. A Link Between Worlds (Honorable Mention: Skyward Sword and Links Awakening on Switch)
Not even 5 seconds in and I already love this "laides gents and comrades against the binary" is perfect and I May just have to adopt that one
Mines 1 twilight princess love it all . Orcarina of time fire water temple iconic. 3 botw this is fun open world made perfect
Comrades against the binary? Wtf does that even mean?
I will never understand why people like BotW so much. Stamina and durability of equipment are simply annoying in most games.
Twilight Princess was the last really good Zelda game in my opinion.
My Top3 would be:
3. a Link to the Past
2. Twilight Princess
1. Ocarina of Time
Am 21y and i played ocarina for first time with pc port and playing it knowing its a game from 1996 is mindblowing
Ps : i used in pc free camera and same other tweaks
Try watching your video before posting. You literally said part of your script twice and did not cut your error out.
HOW THE FUCK DID I MISS THAT
Okay, I've fixed it now. For anyone curious, you'll notice a jarring cut at 8:35, while discussing Spirit Tracks. This is because, as @RefinedRetroReviews stated, I accidentally included a bad take alongside the successful one. This is the best I could do with the CZcams editor, without completely reuploading the video. Apologies for all of this.
I agree with so many points on this list it's not even funny!!! Then again, OoT is maybe my favorite game ever so there's that xD My top 3 are: 1/2: Ocarina of Time/Skyward Sword 3. Link's Awakening. I can't decide if I like OoT or SS better. I agree with you Twilight Princess has maybe the highest number of baller dungeons for a zelda game (every single one slaps). I am NOT a fan of A Link to the Past either. I'm currently replaying botw for the first time since 2017/2018 and am genuinely awe-struck by the amount of beauty and nostalgia I'm experiencing. It might climb up my list, I just wish there were traditional dungeons in it. I adore the shrines though. I'm trying to 100% and rank all the zelda games besides the four swords games so maybe I'll update this comment when I'm done.
Thanks for your video but I feel obliged to defend Ocarina Of Time aha! I think your ranking is a bit clumsy because you don't consider the release context as one of the most important criteria. OOT was a game changer at the time, it was a real banger. Nintendo taught the entire video game industry a lesson with this game, far more than any other Zelda game including Breath Of The Wild. Technically, OOT was a masterpiece at the time and its mechanics influenced many other developers afterwards. Even today, it contains some of the best dungeons and bosses of the serie and the soundtrack is still mythical today.
