The show never showed this but Viserys had the power of his ancestors to see the future in his dreams.
So he knew that if he agreed with Deamon, he would out his family on a unstoppable path of civil war.
The reason he chose to marry and have more kids is because he saw the kind of future would happen when he was gone and it pretty spelled that Deamon would take Rheanyra as a wife and become probably a huge tyrant.
So he saw some hope that they could solve this diplomatically and put a better ruler on the throne. Aegon was definitely not wise or good, but he wasn't power-hungry or tyrannical, he would sooner let his Grandfather rule Westeros as his Hand.
It's a huge story but suffice it to say: this was the one chance for Targaryens to thrive and survive into the next millennium maybe restore some vestige of old Valerya and they failed.
One of the interesting ironies of the stories is that everybody is both right and wrong. Daemon sees the Hightowers for what they are, but the Hightowers are correct that he's not a fit heir for the throne. He's too impetuous and temperamental.
And arguably, Daemon doesn't actually want to be king in the way Otto suggests. He wants the power and believes fiercely in the might of the Targaryen house, but he'd hate the constrictiveness of the throne. What he wants is his brother to see him as a worthy heir to power, which he conflates with being seen as next in line.
Otto may have been right that the kingdom wouldn't accept a queen, but...he may have actually been wrong. A lot of social change comes from it being forced. People adapt. He's disingenuous about his real motivations there.
And through all of this, Viserys is actually the only one who sees what holds the kingdom together - the image of the dragons, the delusion that they have control over them. He understood that they all needed to be playing along together, upholding that illusion for this all to work. That's why he kept insisting on harmony. He just didn't have the strength to do what was needed to see it through.
Daemon and Rhaenyra were inevitable. Best to marry them off now. Viserys should’ve taken the offer.

Outside of doubting his brother Viserys needed Rhaenyra to marry into house Valentin to appease the sea king. Viserys was suppose to marry the sea kings daughter Laena if he ever needed to marry again. He slighted the sea king when he chose to marry Alicent instead. To make amends he forced his daughter to marry the sea king’s son Laenor- this put his daughter in serious harms way since he knew Laenor was a homosexual. It was one of the reasons Viserys defended Rhaenyra so hard later. He felt guilty for putting his daughter in an impossible situation. If Rhaenyra’s didn’t marry Laenor then the kingdom would lose their greatest ally and risk war. On the other hand Viserys knew that because Laenor was a homosexual the possibility of grandchildren was slim- if Rhaenyra didn’t miraculously have a son then their would be great instability, explaining that Rhaenyra want pregnant because the sea kings don’t was gay would get Laenor killed and risk war with the Sea King. Either way viserys caused all this

Not really. House Targaryen was at its strongest during Viserys's reign. The realm was at peace, the economy was strong, and they had the larhest number of Dragons in history.
What they needed was another Jaehaerys, to further develop infrastructure and amplify trade. But Viserys was not ambitious enough for that, and his successors were war hungry cretins who basically ruined Westeros and House Targaryen alongside it.

How did they betray him? Viserys spoke before his death about giving the throne to Aegon. Of course, we the audience know he wasn’t talking about his son, but since Viserys only told his daughter about the prophecy (in secret, with no witnesses), nobody knew what he meant, and his wife believed he was referring to his son.
It all started because of a misunderstanding, I believe, and the bad habit that the Targaryens had to choose similar names for their kids.

If he had listened to daemon more, the dance might’ve been prevented. Daemon told him to get rid of Otto, and he didn’t listen. Daemon’s goals were for his family to be secure as the only power in king’s landing. A Targaryen king, queen, and hand. No outside influence.

William the Conqueror didn't have multiple wives. He had one wife, Matilda. No English/British monarch ever practiced polygamy. By the time of the Norman invasion, England had been practicing Christianity for centuries - it wasn't new. And even pre-Christianity, they didn't have multiple wives. Sure, some monarchs have had mistresses, but never more than one wife at a time ffs. Not entirely sure where you are getting your 'facts' from but they're insanely inaccurate.
All Viserys had to do was grant Daemon and Lady Rhea the annulment they both wanted. It was an unconsumated, forced marriage of two people who hated each other. The only thing Viserys had to do was sing a piece of paper but he was too under Ottos spell to see this.
Historically annulments have being granted to monarchs like with Henry the VIII and Anne of Cleves (bc the marriage remained unconsumated) , and Eleonor of Aquitaine and her first husband (with whom she had two daughters, but they hated each other to death).
Normans had been christian about a century at that point. Normans were not great in numbers and most of the population of Normandy was Latin French and Christian.

Daemon won the crown for viserys against Rhaenys, viserys doubted the wrong man.
Actually, it was a done deal. Jahaerys always wanted Viserys and made sure everyone knew it. If anything, Daemon was doing a favor for Jahaerys by making sure the Velaryons and Baratheons didn't get any rash ideas. Regardless, Viserys was winning that "vote" by a landslide.

These two actors, holy hell. I went to finally start GOT, got a little confused on the MAX app, and started this show instead and I was 3 episodes deep before I realized my mistake; how the heck is anyone complaining about this show??? GRRM is literally looking over the shoulder of every episode and MY GOD is it apparent. Matt Smith and Paddy Considine are unbelievable on screen together. I wish I had waited til every season was on streaming lol this show has me stammering.

Viserys gave Rhaenyra the opportunity to pick any eligible bachelor in the Seven Kingdoms. She spent months dismissing them all because she didn’t want to get married at all. Then she has a big scandal with Daemon so Viserys marries her to Laenor to cover the scandal.
Unpopular opinion but marrying her to daemon was not the answer. Daemon at this point in the show was completely out of line and should not be rewarded for his poor behavior because honestly all he did was hurt his niece. She honestly had other options she could have married into Dorne and bought them back into the fold, she could have sucked it up and married a Lannister she needed an army to back her claim

The sad truth was, Daemon was honestly in love with Rhae. They got married anyway behind Viserys's back years later and turned out to be a powerful couple. Also, Daemon never wanted the throne. He just loved his brother and his niece.
Generally it's Daemon that goes with emotion over logic at least to appearances.
Yet in this instance it was Viserys that was letting his emotion overule his logical thought process.
If it wasnt his daughter or his brother the dude wouldn't have blinked an eye at it.
Daemon being able to wed Rhaenyra back then would have prevented most of the dance of dragons due to no questions of legitimacy..
there would still have been rebellions just cause Otto and company is bunch of c**ts but not anywhere near as deadly or looked down upon
SPoilers Daemon does marry her. Only to choke her out, cheat and treat her like shit. Viserys knew his brother better than most people will ever understand.
The choking part was HBO’s invention, didnt actually happen in the books, as for the infedility, yeah true enough

He stayed in Westeros for her
Never treated her like shit , that cheating part was never confirmed

Wedding her to Daemon would have made the most sense. As king he could annul Daemon’s marriage to Royce, especially since Royce wanted none of Daemon to begin with. The kings own hand suggested betrothing her to her own half brother of 2 so it’s not as if anyone saw it as being out of line.
I think viserys acting in this scene was phenomenal. We really seen the anger and frustration in this but also his love and familiarity with his brother. One of my favorite scenes for acting talent in the show

This would have solved all this dude's problems and he could have died without starting a war.
A war that began the downfall of the Targaryens at that. No dragons led to Aegon trying to hatch them, leading to the fire at summerhall.

The downfall started from viserys period!
It wasn't just lust. They had a true bond. They were the only two who truly saw how stacked the high council was. Furthermore, the corrupt ones playing it. They saw all of each other but without judgment.
If he had listened, he would have had a secure succession instead of the dance that comes.
They really outdid themselves with this show. Who knew HBO would come back this strong after how GOT ended. A+++++...can't wait for S2!
Everyone is defend Daemon like he isn't just as bad as Otto. Daemon was a literal thorn in Viserys' side. Yes, Otto was a schemer but at least the entire realm knew where he stood. Daemon was anarchic. He claimed to be only supportive of his family yet there are multiple instances where he showed otherwise. He was clearly untrustworthy which is exactly why Viserys didn't make him his hand. Targaryens are kings, not butchers. They're supposed to rule, not kill anyone just for disagreeing with them.
Notice how the realm was thriving in the years when both Otto and Daemon were kicked out of the capital? Competent men were ruling the seven kingdoms. Viserys' only crime was allowing them both back into his life.

To everyone saying viserys should’ve let daemon marry Rhanerya, don’t forget the targeryan tradition of marrying two people had been banned for awhile due to them adopting the seven as there gods in order to adjust to Westeros, if viserys let daemon marry rhanerya the faith militant would have rose up again and viserys would have to fight another bloody war, if you don’t believe me just look at maegor the cruel who himself married two women.

Viserys wasn't hearing him. Daemon wanted to keep the power of the dragon. Keep the bloodlines pure. He didn't want his throne.

Viserys is one lucky guy, Daemon could’ve killed him and taken the crown in the blink of an eye if he wished. He’s so lucky that Daemon loved him despite all their problems.
The problem with Daemon marrying Rhae at this point is The Velaryons would've rebelled at some point and it's still going to be Civil War.
Otto Hightower would've rallied ALL the Lords who hate Daemon (which are a lot btw) and overthrown the Kingdom.
The solution was actually simple if Rhae and Laenor were able to have LEGIT children same as Daemon and Laena there would have been ZERO problems. Sadly it was never meant to be.
Thus Civil War came to be.
