Dj Hammers: After such an excellent, enjoyable video, some education is in order - to add to your wealth.
Three things:
1. [As of this filming] 145/Lenox is NOT the only 5-car station in the system; don't forget about old South Ferry (which was reborn, albeit with a short life expectancy). So there are 1.5 stations that only platform 5 cars (LOL). I know you were probably thinking of new South Ferry :-) . I think you know that the original IRT, when opened, had trains with only 5 cars; the reason for the shortness of 91st St., 18th/4th and original Times Square - now part of the shuttle - as they closed/were repurposed before train-lengthening.
2. More important: They never bothered to pull those home-balls you noticed. There is a VERY GOOD reason for those mid-platform home signals. There used to be an interlock within the platforms at that spot (North end of station). The reason for *that* gap in the callapasts - and, of course, the home-balls. So your intuition is [sort of] correct vis-a-vis those differing callapasts on the platform - compensating for the lack of them in the middle; EXCEPT........those differing callapasts weren't originally there. Not even when the interlock was; a recent addition. VERY recent. They weren't even there in 2003, when I came through; just an open view. That spot caught my attention when I was little, because the New York subway didn't host switches in platforms, railroad style. and that spot broke that rule. You didn't know about that because you weren't alive when it existed........or when it was removed - nobody having told you :-) . It was straight-railed in the late '80's to early '90's ( I suspect early '90's). I spent alot of time in Harlem - born there actually - and my grandpa used to ride me on the subway (to his regret, I'm sure, LOL) and we used to get on at 148th alot. It was a short walk from the apartment (138th/5th) to there (he also liked to walk - otherwise we'd just use 135th). Well it's interesting to note, that as 'Murphy's Law' exists, I was on a downtown train that split that interlock; hilarious, looking back. That conductor had a real sheepish smile on his face. Especially remakable now that I realize the station is only 5 cars long - disovering that relatively late (that same 2003 trip); making that incident all-the-more interesting: the conductor couldn't just open the straight half of the train. Now a crossover South of the station? That is news to me. Being born in '71, I wasn't even around when that was there. I do see that gap in the columns; it does look a crossover was there.
3. An interesting note is that an uptown train platforming there fouls the junction, namely the downtown track thereof. I believe the reason why the No. 3's were only 9 cars for about a decade.
The 148th St. station was built as part the Esplanade Gardens complex; built covering over the yards. An interesting footnote is that you used to be able to walk along the riverfront, from a footbridge over the Harlem River Drive, (at +/- 142nd St.) straight behind the near-by apartment complex, straight to the subway fence; could see the trains come right out of the ground. I used to LOVE to board there because, unlike today, there were herds of 22's and a substantial number of 12's and 15's -as they were a minority on the IRT. It was a feast for the eyes, to see all those roof-lines. It used to be music to my ears, hearing all those brake compressors kick on. Then, they would kick off, punctuated by a hiss.
Excellent video Dj! I enjoyed it. I hope this helps. Oh, and smashing classical piece. :-)
"Now a crossover South of the station? That is news to me. Being born in '71, I wasn't even around when that was there. I do see that gap in the columns; it does look a crossover was there. " Of course there would be a crossover at that spot. Until 1968 145th Street station was the northern terminus of the 3 line. The train had to cross over to the other track for its southbound trip.
14:53 That car (1450) also has the R62A rollsign!
At about the 10:00 minute mark, you can see a southbound number 2 train crossing at the 142nd Street Junction just south of this station!
Brooklyn Six, I can also the Downtown 2🚆 from 149th Street- Grand Concourse.
That “open front section” sign is like the ones at the former loop station at South ferry.
Magic combo of video, music and editing! As said earlier here, music is normally not to my likings in a video like this. I must humble admit this is a rare exception. Thanks!
Thank You, I was never much interested in New York, but Your videos have shown Me a vibrant and fascinating City Rail Network. I enjoy the Station Tours.
I went to this school when it first opened.I have many great memories that I still cherish about this area and the trains.
Great, love the music too. Why is 148 the only station where trains are required to blow their horns?
They both share tracks
Lol epic
There's a parking lot for employees near that curve (as well as some nearby storage and maintenance facilities), and employees regularly cross the tracks there to get to/from the station and parking lot or to/from the station and head of the yard. Because of the sharp curve and frequency of training entering and leaving, all trains sound the horn as a warning to anyone who might be thinking of crossing at that time.
Hilarious ending! Excellent use of Bolero too - as a Brit, I always associate it with ice skating, plus am not generally fond of music interrupting the sound of the trains. Here, though, you've done an excellent edit and balance and made a piece of art that works both as a railfan experience and as a classic 'Transport Film' - so glad I subbed! Encore!
You can never go wrong with a little bit of Ravel's music, can ya?
I associate it with Bo Dereks hot bod
@@mitchellschwartz6766 The music is changed.
I lived in Harlem and always took the 3 train. It’s my favorite train since it starts and terminates in Harlem, which made my commute from Harlem to Brooklyn enjoyable! And Ravel’s music just makes this video that much better!
Yeah me too I really love the 3 Train
I love station tours, the old clock @1:37 and handrail @1:41 are great
Finally another one!
Thanks for the tours. Make more soon. I hope our numerous likes can continue these tours.
DJ Hammers, I just love your subway and train videos, really detailed, professional, and thoughtful! In good humor, too! BRAVO!
That music is great thanks for that background score i love Symphonys. Yea it was Bolero
Beautiful wonderful video! The curve to this station sounds so beautiful, the IRT is pure history and nostalgia 24/7.
Nice job! I really didn’t even expect you were going to do this one it’s one of my personal favorites 😊😊😊
Thank you, I really appreciate the long form videos.
This was an excellent tour! I appreciate the choice of music, too ;)
3:51 I can barely hear the announcements with earphones on, that the train is approaching to the last stop (148th Street). Nah, forget it.
Damn, it's been a long time since you've done a tour video. This is awesome.
yes back at it with the subway tours its a great way for me to learn about the history of nyc subway
Yay! The tours are back!
Very enjoyable video, particularly as I grew up in this area of Harlem.
It’s a great extension of the 148 St. Lenox Term.its another page of a next stop after 145 St. and to make more short cuts of communication to get places closer to where folks trying to get too, it’s a fact!
I wish you would’ve added when you was aboard the (3) train leaving 148th street that the scene of the Harlem river, you used to have a clear view of old Yankee Stadium and you probably have a small glance at the new stadium.
Excellent!! Thank you!! The only 2 stations in Manhattan I've never been in/thru/seen!! Thanks for the in depth tour of these stations, now I know how they look. The side view of the ride btwn sta's was fun, but RFW would have been spectacular (most of my subway riding is when most of the cars had an RFW!!)!!
Thank you I have been waiting for this!
Great music, my high school music teachers favorite at de Witt Clinton 1961
@@johnyessis4906 The music is different now.
My home stop! My building was in this!
Anyone in the last 5 cars wanting to get off at 145th Street has two choices:
1) Get off at 148th Street and walk south.
2) Stay on the train and ride it back to 145th Street Southbound where they will now be in one of the first five cars.
Please more station tours awesome video thankyou
Do a tour of broadway junction please.

Broadway East New York.
I been riding to this station for 5 years, tysm
Kudos!The "Oscar" goes to DJ Hammers #3 video,Best Sound,Best narrative.The music was a delight!..
Great vid!
what a wonderful video
The North end of the station had a diamond cross over in the middle of station which accounts for the missing columns. It was a left over from the days when 147 St Yard Shop North of the Station was the Main Shop for IRT system. The switch was used and while waiting to take a train coming from the 146 Depot before the Building was renamed. I saw a train crossing the switch back in 1982. The switch was removed in the late 80s. Only 9 car trains could run on this line due to the marker single protecting the switch at Lenox Junction being closer to 145 St. A 10 car train NB making a stop 145 St would not be able to clear the single there for blocking 2 Service coming to and from The Bronx. The marker single was moved back at the South End of 145 St NB So 10 car trains can make a stop at 145 St clearing the single and not block the Lenox Junction.
Very nice.
Making good use of a former yard. The 3 train used to terminate at 145th St station.😀
Fun fact: occasionally, 1 trains come up the line just like 3 trains go up to 137th. When that happens it’s quite interesting. The interesting part is that Since 1 train Crews are not familiar with the 145th street procedure, they are instructed to just skip 145th street altogether.

Excellent!!!
Ah, is it beautiful to see where I live with my parents; the diverse Harlem. I remember when I was 7 I took soccer classes at that brown building next to the station. I hated soccer, and the only reason I did it was because of the subway station
Cool video, also AMAZING channel art!!!!!!!!! :)
145th street station is AWESOME!!!
Amazing!!!!
As always you come out with the best videos. I do wanna know what's it like riding the MTA?
to me the most confusing stations in the system is gun hill road. Literally the same names with the 2 and 5 but completely different stations. What’s also confusing is that there’s the 5 that runs to Nereid and the 5 that runs to dyre. That alone can make tourist heads explode
thedankestmeme The 5 to Nereid Avenue is merely a rush hour branch to ensure that White Plains Road has service to the East Side.
The station tour is awesome; and the addition of the music (Maurice Ravel's "Bolero") is a really neat touch. But then I'm a classical music fan... However I don't recommend adding music to your terminal-to-terminal videos (which I also enjoy - and first attracted me to you). Keep up your great work! Greg
The music is changed.
Good, I like this video. 😃
This is one unique station!
I Love this
Superb (as usual) !! I know the MTA has made it difficult to railfan window since the old R-17/21/22 etc days with the ('new') trains like the R-62 (which went into service the year my son was born in 1984 when I worked at Transit) and the R-142A, 160, 179 & 188 which all have full width cabs making it nearly impossible to film at the front of the train, and I haven't any memory of what happens once a #3 train leaves 145th street northbound to Lenox Terminal in terms of the crossover. Do you have any video of that crossover either northbound towards Lenox Terminal or southbound leaving Lenox Terminal entering the crossover or on the #2 train southbound entering and going through the crossover?
I loved the choice of music. Who was performing The Ravel Bolero?
At about the 10:50 mark, you can see a northbound number 2 train at the 142nd Street Junction turning east in order to head to The Bronx just south of this station!
That's because that 2 train is going to a different place, and that is 149th Street-Grand Concourse!
Nice Tour: 148th Street - Lenox Terminal
Dj Hammers
FINALLY A TOUR. DJ HAMMERS PLEASE DO QUEENS BVLD TOUR.
Cool!
I heard that 145 St on the (3) line will be going under a major renovation as part of the Enhanced Station Initiative
Idk why but 148th Street reminds me of the stations on MARTA's rail system. Just less fancy since it little older.
You be surprised how many people in that area of Harlem rely on the 3 train everyday!!
This so cool
There used to be a set of switches at the north end of the station right before the tunnel also
When can I expect that 2nd Ave Subway station tour?
145th Street station in Harlem is part of ESI, which means station will be close for months of construction, and see the new features.
Great music
2:30 At first, I was like, "How can there be a northbound train passing through the first (northernmost) station on the line?" And, "Why is it situated on the west side of the platform?"
Then I realized it's just turning around to begin heading southbound, lol.
lol the end killed me
Do a tour of Fordham Road (4) train please
I thought that the music was playing in the station
The garbage and construction trains go through those stations to the yards that s why the tracks extend across Like that on the ends. Workers also tend to walk through the track and tunnels to the yard and stations. All stations that connection s to yards have these tracks .even on the A line at the Dykman station and 34 street because of the yard on 11th ave.
I’ve always wondered what those 2 stations looked like
Another thing, the music got changed. Where's the music of Bolero?
Bolero?
STUPENDOUS!!!
Hi This is the best song
The music seemed appropriate for that whacky 145th street station.
238th st 1 train northbound also has no countdown clocks ;)
They should convert that linden boulevard storage yard into a train stop for the C train.
Regarding the delay in opening doors at the terminal, why does the arriving conductor have to set the doors for the departing conductor? Why can’t the departing conductor do it? That door delay is very annoying.
I really wish that junction would be rebuilt to reduce the number of issues with merging.
Informative clip with captions. But I muted the audio - not that I don't like Ravel but IMHO adds little if anything to the value of the clip.
I really miss the R62As (blue stickers) from back in the day...
Do they have any # 3 that you could railfan the whole line?
I notice that the music became wilder at the 145th street station. Why?
I first thought of an R142 3 train at 10:51 lol
That was just an R142 2 train
Basically looks like the 145th St station is same length as the closed 91 St station on the B'way #1 line and 18th Street station on Lexington Av line. Is that correct? The only remnant of the past that is still operational.
That's correct, presuming 91st and 18th/4th. The original IRT trains shortly after original opening were only five cars long. The reason they don't extend the station South today, is because the Northbound train would foul the flat junction (of the No. 2); the reason No. 3 trains were 9 cars long for some years.
Great video! What song is this, out of curiosity?
Bolero by ravel
@@metstrainfan The music is changed a little while ago...
And what the FLIP happened to Ravel's Bolero, Mark?????
145th St does plan on having ESI. I hope it involves ma’ing the junction better, or even making it a station on the 2
TRAIN TRAVELER The station would have 3 platforms. The northbound 3, the northbound 2, and the combined southbound. The old southbound will not be demolished so that should hurricane sandy happen again, the damage won’t be as bad since there will be more space for water to get in.
TRAIN TRAVELER I would make the junction better by temporarily suspending the 2, and having the 5 split in two branches at East 180th(I would do the thing I’d do with 145th with Bronx park east)
Lenox Terminal-148th Street to me remains unique.
Interesting fact: the #3 train Harlem terminal, is actually on 149th street. 😏
Everyone knows that
Haha bolero really does it!
whats the song in 2:50
Do the bklyn terminus of the 3 at new lots...
Re:145th street station
...This makes ZERO SENSE!!!
I just looked at welcome to an experience, and from his front view, it looks like there is PLENTY OF ROOM to make it a 10 car stop
...especially when factoring in the part that is now "avaialble" is open for 7 cars (despite there being only 5 cars allowed to be "opened" at the stop)...all you need is to extend the stop by 3 cars...maybe 100-150 ft?!?!?
...it would be basically similar to the 4/5 borough hall stop without the 2/3 portion
That platform at Lenox Terminal is due for rebuilding!
But this is still awesome
It sucks knowing that the 3 train can't be extended past 148st. for various reasons.
Alrucards how come?
Is it me, or was the last 3 train car an R62A at 12:50 (two-lines for rollsign)?
Nawh thats an R62 with R62a Rollsigns
The side we are watching has the 62a roll sign, but the other side has the 62 roll sign
Yep it was an R62A
No thats still an R62
1386 is R62
Excellwnt station tour and if the Ninth Avenue elevated still still survive to this day between 155th Street Manhattan and 167th Street the Bronx 4 train it would have allowed 3 trains to go to the Bronx and alternative routing for the 4 train in Manhattan by running via the west side line similar to how the 5 train operates via the 2 between Nevins Street and 149th Street Grand Concourse if problems occur on the east side line and in this case it would be Nevins Street and 167th Street for 4 trains via Lennox and 9th ave. Harlem 148th Street should have being updated to install countdown clocks like all IRT lines except for 7 train
