  • Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 5 - hailed as the bestest episode evar - contains one or two moments that aren't completely terrible. But if this is the best Disney Star Wars can do, it's still laughably bad.

Things Disney doesn’t understand about Star Wars.
    1. The Stars (I feel like we’ve been stuck on a desert planet of some variation for every single movie/show.
    2. The Wars (never do we ever have a sense of any factions/allegiances outside of First Order empire bad and good guys good with no nuance to the conflict) remember the prequels giving us actual context to the conflict? Too boring I guess.
    3. Lightsabers (they don’t dismember, can somehow strike non lethal blows, and the new props must be heavy as fuck because they def don’t look like “light” sabers anymore.
    4. The Force (they have no sense of what it is, how it scales, and how to balance it logically. It’s more a plot device than a power of the Jedi/Sith now. A get out of jail free card for bad writing.
    5. Jedi/Sith (so you’re telling me that 30 years after the OT the force and it’s users are now stuff of legend? That’s like saying Vietnam is a fairytale in 2022. Also Jedis are known for stoicism, discipline, and unbreakable will, but Rey screams and yells all the time and fights purely with emotion.)
    6. How to write a decent story

I could rebut all of these, but I'm going to pick on #5 because it's the easiest. 20 years after Order 66, Luke had no idea what the Force was. Rey had heard some stuff, but wasn't sure if it was true or not. The Emperor was a master of propaganda and scapegoating. Ask a 20-year-old today what they know about Vietnam, or pick a more current event, they won't know shit. And they have all that information at their fingertips via their cellphone.
I'm not saying this show is perfect. But since I like Star Wars, I'm willing to look for the stuff I like and let the other stuff slide. I don't have to watch it or even like it. But I think it would be pretty shitty of me to tell another Star Wars fan not to watch it because it sucks when there are literally thousands and thousands that love it. Thinking you know better than everyone else is narcissistic behavior. It's Trumpian. Let folks make up their own minds - hey, maybe they know what they like better than you do. Don't be the guy who sees a dude eating his lunch and enjoying it and then telling him it looks gross and smells funny. Don't be the guy who tells his friend who is in love that his girlfriend is ugly. Live and let live. I had to learn that myself and still have to catch myself from time to time.

@@B-a-t-m-a-n “trumpian” “but since I like Star Wars I’m willing to let the other stuff slide” and the whole second paragraph is just a straw man.
Let me retort. Ask any well educated 20-30 year old about Vietnam and they will be able to give you a general summary of the conflict. We all took American history, whether you paid attention or not is on you, palpatine is a master of prolog and a and misdirection yes, but to completely wipe an event as major as a galactic war from multiple populations of planets minds in such a short time is illogical, especially when people that were alive during the even would still logically be around in the present. As far as the quotes I took from your statement, I’m not really going to address “trumpian” because that’s just a stupid buzzword I’m not falling for, and then the second quote is the precise mentality of why Disney Star Wars is so shit. Stop forgiving mediocrity, especially since it isn’t Disney’s original IP they have no right to go in and fuck it up to this degree, they should feel lucky they have the privilege to produce media with the Star Wars name on it, but instead they use it as a platform to throw political hissy fits on Twitter when they face real criticism for their shit product. They had an entire EU that they scrapped for 3 shows based on old characters played by the same old tired actors and keeping the universe to what seems to be a population of 150 people. And it’s not just Star Wars they are ruining either, it’s marvel too. You should be sick of the shit too, look at Fallen Order, how great it was, because Disney had nothing to do with it, it wasn’t infested with out of place looking actors, cheap budgets, and lame ass writing because the people who
Made it clearly care about the property, while Disney sees it as their own personal money cow to keep feeding the general audience member berry soup that they don’t want anymore. The ratings show it. Disney are the narcissists pal, not me.

You forgot one, “space” & basic concepts like electronics , engineering, physics, etc.
Yes, this comes out of a plot contrivance, they want the smuggling operation to be discovered, and more people to increase stakes, but they throw on an explanation that’s just ridiculous.
They have a ship, and for some reason, blah, blah trade routes, they’ve been waiting 2 months to leave?
      What?
Travel in Star Wars was pretty simple, it functioned solely to get characters from A to B, until Rian Johnson showed up and broke Star Wars in every way imaginable, to have his ridiculously contrived plot, so now when, and only when, the writers need it to happen, suddenly travel in Star Wars becomes super complicated, has fuel issues, and either mirrors Sea travel or our current real world level of technology, where we need launch windows and distances are huge in our solar system, etc.
      Now the hyperspace is broke?
How much do you want to bet, that the writers will have no understanding of what that actually means?
They might as well return to the planet to fix it, or it’s going to take thousands of years to get anywhere!
Like the plot hole in Last Jedi, when the slow chase started, they would have had to come out of hyperspace right next to “Not Hoth”, to arrive there in 10-20 hours, it would be obvious that was where they were going, because it was the ONLY place they could reach, not using hyperspace, so they couldn’t have ever planned to “sneak down” to the planet, it’s moronic.

Reva’s story should have been that she was the least of the inquisitors because she had yet to capture/kill a Jedi. Maybe she has actually been secretly allowing Jedi/Force users to get away as she comes upon them, but now because of her failure among their ranks she is about to be removed from the rank of inquisitor. She could then have an internal conflict of seeing her opportunity to reach Vader slipping away and the need to do things she is opposed to in order carry on the charade and move up the ranks. The stress of the situation could then be attributed to her obsession with Obi-Wan, knowing that he is the only prize that would garner Vader’s attention. There is a hundred different ways her character could have been developed to make her a good character

My sons and I would've MUCH rather had an Inquisitors show/series. I never wanted to see anything involving Kenobi, because I knew they'd break him down and destroy canon along with it (though I didn't think it'd be to this extent). They could've had Reva be the star. They would've had to have Vader in it. But not Kenobi. It still would've been bad (experience tells us), but Obi-Wan/Luke and Leia would've remained safe (from Disney SJW). They could've even had Ewan McGregor pop up in one episode where the Inquisitors show up on Tatooine, but he remains in the shadows while they chase down a false lead or something. The goal is not to intoxicate the audience with memberberries but to manipulate their emotions to something specific. If a scene is intended to scare then it is a success when people are scared. It's kind of telling that the best SW content we've gotten from Disney are their animated series. Bad Batch and Clone Wars season 7 are geniunely great and allow room for characters to grow and learn from their mistakes. The Bad Batch begins with 5 seemingly cliched soldier archetypes (The Brute, The Thinker, The Leader, The Skeptic and The Technician), but along the course of the episodes some of them do change and break out of that mold. The Leader acknowledges he isn't supposed to lead all the time, the Brute has some hidden depth and The Skeptic was right about some things he was suspicious of, but also lost touch with himself because of it. It's a great show and I'm actually looking forward to the next season.
Clone Wars S7 did what Kenobi couldn't: trying out new things while also paying tribute to the source material and making everything fit neatly into canon. Why is it so hard for Live Action shows to do the same?

Honestly, what the hell were they thinking having Vader say he knew all along after stabbing Reva? This is just hilarious. Having Vader say that just made me laugh out loud, like what the fuck has he been doing if he knew all along? Like you say, his entire string of actions this season now look utterly retarded, if he knew all along. Or the only other option I can think of is he lied compulsively on the spot, not wanting to let Reva think she got the better of him, despite in fact not knowing. If he's that powerful, he wouldnt need a lightsabre at all. The OT and even the prequels put sensible limits on what the Force could achieve, so that Jedi didnt come across as invincible and some sense of tension could be maintained. For Yoda to lift Luke's X wing was a massive effory and he was ostensibly the most experienced and powerful jedi - on a level comparable to Palpatine, who is probably the most powerful force user - well, except maybe you know who.... but anyway, for me that was too much of a stretch.

How about this as a alternative idea..... The show revolves around ObiWan on Tatioone watching over Luke and helping him/saving him in situations but from afar (using his Force powers) but also cuts between a parallel story of the Empire, Inquisitors and Vader hunting down surviving Jedi. We are introduced to a small collection of those Jedi, which Reva is one running from the Empire. During the course of the show Reva's and ObiWan's path cross and their is a danger that The Empire will find ObiWan and Luke, where upon Reva and the other Jedi succeed in drawing the Empire away from them at the last minute/episode but dying in the process to the over whelming powers of Vader and the Inquisitiors. We could even have a little cameo on Alderaan and see a small glimpse of little Leia. We get cool scenes of Vader and the Inquisitors hunting Jedi, ObiWan using the Force, new Characters such as Reva who we route for, flash backs of the prequels and new scenes with Padawan Anakin, a glimpse of little Leia and younger Luke and all without breaking canon.

      @TheLittlePlatoon  Před 2 lety +5

Well, there might be the occasional insult… but generally, yeah.
I’ve always preferred CZcams reviewers who actually take the time to explain why bad is bad (as opposed to pointing at it and saying: “this is bad”). I take the view that, whenever you’re lucky enough to get a fairly large audience for your videos, there’s likely to be a good chunk of them who like or want to try writing their own stories. So attempting to set out what constitutes good and bad scene construction actually has a positive use as well as a negative one, in that it might help people avoid some of the mistakes made in shows like this. I was much more keenly aware of the technique involved when writing my own book because I’d watched MauLer dissecting various things, for example.

I'll save everyone a lot of time with this series. The writers sat down on day one to plan out what the story was going to be and what high points to include. They quickly ran into a lot of rules that made the writing harder (we can't do that, because jedi can sense living things, etc.). They then decided that it was too much work to write stories that held true to the established rules so they decided to conpletely ignore them because Disney was still going to make money anyways.

The Devastator should have no problem running down a transport ship at sublight. An ISD-I is way faster at sublight than a civilian transport ship. And even if it wasn't, it carries 6 squadrons of TIES that most definitely are faster than a civilian transport, let alone all the support craft - shuttles, assault transports, etc - that it does carry.
Not being able to go to hyperspace with an ISD-I on your butt is death... Even the Falcon, a YT-1300, a ship that is notoriously quick even at sublight, wasn't necessarily faster than an ISD at sublight speeds...

I love how 'part 5' has predictable "revelations" about Reva and the Grand Inquisitor that undermine part 3 & 4; why was Reva chasing after Baby Leia if she wants to kill Vader? Why not do it while Vader is attacking Obi-Wan? Why keep Reva alive once you have found Obi-Wan (since that was apparently all she was needed for)? Why did he let Obi-Wan go on Mapuzo when he can pull down ships from the sky? A moron tried to tell me that Bail didn't tell Obi-Wan about Vader being alive in the first episode because, 'he didn't want to burden Obi-Wan because of his PTSD'. Oh, great.

This for me is the ultimate show of “why?!”. Some real good ones in this episode:
    1. Why does Bail give away all the secret details of everything, including the fact that Vader’s kids are alive and where they are in a recording literally anyone could find?
    2. Why send a 10 year old to fix complicated electronics she couldn’t possibly understand?
    3. Why is Kenobi ok with that and her potentially being electrocuted and killed?
    4. Why, if there’s no one small enough to fit in the vents, are there electronics in there in the first place? How are they maintained?
    5. Why does AOTC era Anakin look about 45 years old?
    6. Why does Reva order the doors to be blown up when she can easily cut through with a lightsaber?
    7. Why does Reva know that it’s Anakin in the Vader suit? All she knows is Anakin went rogue, not that he became Vader.
    8. Why doesn’t Vader just stop the 2nd ship from escaping also?
    9. Why does Reva let Obi Wan escape? The plan seemed to be “kill Vader while he’s distracted with me” meaning they will fight, but then he just runs away again. Wouldn’t it make more sense if Kenobi and Vader fought, then Reva took her chance to kill Vader then? That would have also given the ship time to escape
    10. Why doesn’t Reva attack Vader while he’s busy pulling the ship back?
    11. Why did they say there’s only 1 ship when there’s actually 2?
    12. Why was the tracker or whatever suddenly able to reprogram the droid to do something very specific?
    (Adding more now)
    13. Why didn’t Kenobi just force pull that woman to safety? In the last ep he was holding back metric tons of water pressure
    14. Why didn’t she throw the thermal detonator over the heads and behind the troopers? That would likely have killed a bunch of them and she was protected by the droid. Yes I know she was shot, but as we’ve seen in this show serious injuries are something you can just walk off
    15. Why didn’t Vader kill Reva? He didn’t even take her lightsaber. Must have read that rumour from Disney about the potential Reva spin off
    16. Why did Kenobi call it “Order 66”? He must have watched Revenge of the Sith
That’s just off the top of my head.

  • @Bellasguy
    @Bellasguy Před 2 lety +16

Beautiful. Your dissection of Revas's motives and actions show just what a hack job these writers are. A woman decides to take revenge on a maniac for killing her innocent friends by getting close to him by…killing and maiming innocents? And their idea of wisdom is illustrated by their insistence that a 10 year-old child, raised as a pampered princess, has managed to accumulate more wisdom than a 50 year-old ascetic monk. Stupid doesn’t begin to cover it. But it’s all cheered on by a huge segment of the fan base who get wood seeing Vader grab a ship trying to take off and ignore the pathetic storytelling. If called on it, they respond: "Star Wars is for kids." Inexcusable

That ship-grabbing moment just made me question, "Where was all that jizz when Leia was escaping you in the end of Rogue One or the Millenium Falcon taking off on Hoth? Oh, and how about the other ship? Did you just run out of jizz?" It's childish inconsistency because they think we're all morons and won't notice (IF they notice the inconsistencies, which I doubt). It COULD be argued that actions of people under the control of the Dark Side are irrational, but all the Darksiders we've seen so far seemed totally rational and in control, not raging maniacs or, harumph, hysterical women.

9:49 The sheer fact that these shows and movies are causing a substantial number of people to ask if things make sense every few shots shows that something is very wrong with the filmmaking.
Most shots and dialogue lines should be giving audiences enough examples of intelligence to cover for less obvious lapses and mistakes.
I never noticed the car in Fellowship of the Ring and I never realized that hyperspace could never work as described even with faster than light technologies. That is because the scripts and cinematography of these movies made sense most of the time.
