Obi-Wan Kenobi - It Gets Worse

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3 brought us the much-trailed reunion of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan, and somehow managed to make it a contrived, tedious, canon-wrecking affair.
(This is a slightly snuffly review, as I have flu. This might also result in one or two things having been missed or misidentified. I don't believe this undermines any of the points made herein, but I aim to publish a video at the end of the season going through points made in these videos and correcting them where necessary, and generally responding to criticism. A series of polemics/rants will, obviously, not be quite as rigorous as a full-length video essay, but it’s important that we be as honest as possible in our criticisms, and it’s my hope that this approach will result in a final verdict that’s not based on any mistakes or misconceptions that may have been carried through from these earlier videos.)

Points were spot on. I gave this episode a chance. Being the 3rd in the series I was expecting to see Obi Wan turn a corner and finally get over his ptsd or at least put it aside to confront evil people killing innocents right in front of his face but the heroic moment didnt come and thats a damn shame. We just get another 6 episode steaming dump. I'm done watching it. I'll just catch what happens from reviewers.

@Ultra Darth MAGA but he didnt die, if maul can get cut in half and live then im pretty sure the GI can survive this especially sense she probably missed his vital organs sense hes not human but an alien and therefore could have different vital organs in different places in his body. also people are getting mad about this episode having vader and obi-wan meeting. it never states in canon they didnt meet before the death star fight. and heres why.... HE legit calls him DARTH and isnt surprised that hes in the suit!!!!! how do you explain that scene then?! if I saw a 7 foot man in a black leather armored suit i would not assume that he was Anakin Skywalker turned Darth Vader, I would assume oh some OP Stormtrooper has sick battle armor neat. There needs to be a reason that Obi-Wan knows that the man in that suit is named Darth Vader, sense he wouldn't have seen Anakin's suit up scene in ep3 nor would he have been told that Darth Vader is the man in the black armor sense there is no scene of him knowing that. also i get people thing Star Wars is dead however yall dont complain about ep4 constantly being changed and yet this episode breaks the canon? the one that legit has a reason to set up how Kenobi would know that Anakin survived, and it makes sense that he would be scared of vader sense the last he saw him he was extra crispy original recipe. so i think that Kenobi makes more sense than Rey calling herself a Skywalker. and lastly yall are complaining about a series that in comics, books, and now movies Palpatine CLONES HIMSELF!!!! but this meeting breaks the mold got it!

The words of contempt chosen in the last five minutes of this review were sheer poetry:
“...All the gravity stolen from the work of better men and they've squandered it... The grave has been dug up. The corpse has been exhumed, dolled up, and put on display. And we have been asked to pretend that it still lives. We've been asked to praise it; to champion it; to roll over in our appreciation; as though if what we've been given breathes new life into a corpse. It'll satisfy those people shallow enough to draw no distinctions between a lover and a cadaver of the same. But this is no way to live a life and it is no way to create art and stories. It adds... nothing. It has... no soul. It is a lifeless puppet strung up by some cash-hungry marrionettist in a bit to profit from the cheap thrills of the children of a bankrupt age. It doesn't honor the past -- it debases it for our shallow pleasure. We, this world, and these characters deserve so much better than this. What a crying shame. What an astounding waste this story is.”

I disagree with you on one point: in the Revenge of the Sith, the senate cheered and clapped when Palpatine announced he will be replacing the Republic with a galactic Empire. So Tia saying she joined the Empire when it stood for something isn't far fetched. Perhaps people intially believed in the Empire, since afterall Palpatine was responsible for ending the Clone Wars (and again, the Senate approved of the formation of the Empire).

    • @doow11
      @doow11 Před 2 lety +122

I'd also like to add that the Empire was seen as a force of order for most of the Galaxy. It's a small detail but it matters when talking about civilian support of the Empire. For a majority of the galaxy, the empire really was just a stronger, better republic. The soldiers were normal civilians, they had more of a connection to the people they were protecting, they came in and effectively acted as a superior police force, taking out pirates and criminal gangs alike. For your average civilian, the Empire was neutral if not mildly benevolent. They had no knowledge of the slavery nor the atrocities. Order 66 was spun to be in defense of the galaxy against an attacking Jedi force, the Death Star wasn't known of by most, and the destruction of alderaan hasn't occured yet either. Truth be told, even at this point in the story (10 years into Imperial Age) the empire still stood for something: order, safety, peace.

@@xiojade7 globalism is a policy/ idea. The Empire is a governmental body. You can't really compare the two. The Empire absolutely could and did stand for something. It was touted to the galactic masses as a new government based on order and making a "safe and secure society." It stood for order, stability, and progress. A beacon of hope rising from the chaos of the Clone Wars and the hated stagnancy and incompetency that characterized the last decades of the Galactic Republic.
The Empire's policies helped prevent and end rampant piracy, criminal syndicates, and general conflict in the mid rim and parts of the core worlds.
It wasn't until people began seeing how many freedoms they were losing for the sake of that safety and how abusive the Empire was to places like the outer rim that people started learning it was evil. Even then the empire had many supporters, who thought the trade off was worth it.

In Episode III he has no chill and tries to murder Kenobi, and were it not for a slight advantage of high ground Kenobi would be dead. In Episode IV Vader senses him, seeks him out, greets him and then fights/murders him and goes about his day. That is who Vader is. Ruthless and pragmatic. He enjoys a bit of sinister taunting and on the spot torture, but not to the point of idiocy. He gets the job done and moves on. He will not let Kenobi go if that does not provide him any further gain.
On top of that, am I to believe this little fire was not circumventable? You can go around it easily. Mere moments ago Vader blew it out and dragged Kenobi across with the Force, can he not do so again? Can he not crush the droid? Is he out of Force potions now? You can literally hear the storm troopers shout, "I can't see him!" "can't get through!", which means the writers want us to believe that they are doing their damnedest to reach Kenobi and can't. I simply refuse to take that as fact: nothing physically impairs you to go around this fire, that much is established visually, and Vader just displayed powers that would mean escape is impossible.
Really, it is absurd to insinuate that Vader let Kenobi go, or that he was actually out of reach. My eyes saw what they did, my ears heard what they did. I know how Vader is from the films, videogames, extended universe, and I picked up on what the writers wanted us to believe from their writing. Their understanding of the characters is out of sync with how they really are. Even then, they break the rules that they established themselves and expect me to accept that. I simply won't.

I know this is kinda thin but it at least makes sense with what is shown. It does still irk me tho because there's such little room in movies to tell things that obviously the lines in episode 6 were meant to be about Padme, and for poor Luke that's all he ever heard about his mom. So if Leia's memory is false or confused that's just extra heartbreaking. Idk, it's unresolved and I don't like it. But that's honestly my only pre-Disney Star Wars gripe.

So she'd believe the senator's dead wife was her mom, and that he married her while she was still a toddler. Done. Not like anyone in the Organa family believed she wasn't adopted the cousin confirms that everyone knows. Could have just did a soft lie due to a dead wife and leave the father as a vague encounter. Boom she could then as an adult mix up memories with her dead adopted mom with padme not questioning it beyond that.

Also true fans of Star Wars know the history of the movies are willing to overlook small inconsistencies because they know how the movies were made and why they were made in that order! It's the same reason people are willing to overlook Luke and Leia kissing even though she says she always knew they were siblings! Lucas didn't know when or if he was going to be able to make another movie, so he worked with what he did have.

I disagree with you to an extent, but also agree with you too lol.
I think part of it is just the fact it's a series rather than a movie- the story has to (or perhaps just because it's "the thing to do") fit a more serialized format, aka each episode has to have somewhat of an arc and they tend to end on cliffhangers to keep people wanting more. In some ways (and with Kenobi especially) I think that kinda works. It's almost an homage to the Flash Gordon serials that originally inspired Lucas himself. Do I think a more traditional, but extended, cinematic format could work on Disney+? Absolutely. But in many ways it would be experimental, and Disney/Lucasfilm doesn't tend to push the envelope these days.
As far as scope/scale/budget is concerned, I just don't think we will see the heights of the best Star Wars films via any Disney+ series- the time & money just isn't there. What's worse is that the series seem to be Lucasfilm's main focus these days. Hard to blame them when they've had mostly positive reactions to their series as opposed to their films. But Star Wars ultimately belongs in theaters, and I hope they can get that arm of the business working properly again someday.
I do feel that the cinematography has been elevated a couple notches with Kenobi though, and (some of) the acting is the best we've seen in any of their original series. Honestly I think Andor might be the sleeper epic we're waiting on.

Personally I think this first run-in was just to show how far Obi has fallen from when we last saw him. I do think (hope) we will see Vader's private reaction/rumination on the downfall of his former master. First time through I thought it was lame he let him go. 2nd time through it felt more like it gave Vader pause seeing his old master like this. Not that he has any love left for him, but I think it'd be perplexing to see that for him, and in a way, disappointing. If you're hellbent on revenge for a decade and find the confrontation after all those years so anticlimactic, surely you'd have some disappointment there. Hopeful that the next episode clarifies things a bit.
Could it have been better? Yes. Do I think it's the worst thing Disney has ever done with my (our, but not you because you said so no offense haha) precious Star Wars? Not by a mile. I'd say so far it's the 2nd best Disney Star Wars series, with Mando out front and BoBF getting lapped lol. The sequel trilogy was the worst of it for me, and while this show hasn't been perfect, I personally feel it is a step in the right direction.
Your comment on intentionally causing unrest and further division is eery and totally plausible. That's what so much media has become, so why not Star Wars too? Although the amount of hate and flaring tempers surrounding it all might just be the status quo in the age of outrage.
I'm going to reserve my full judgment for the end of the series though. It's not like I'm certain it will end up being amazing & that they'll answer every question & iron out every wrinkle, but I do think it could be very good in the end.

a short clash where Obi, having just recently defeated the inquisitors, vader shows up, Ben recognizes who he is, and just whispers something akin to " anakin, no." and after a short fight where they are definitely evenly matched, Obi-wan decides discretion is the greater part of valor and makes a run for it after trapping vader in someway that leaves him a significant danger, like a heavy duty blast door. while he escapes and makes sure he won't be found again, letting everything fit into the continuity. in vader's mind, he was beaten, but he did not lose. they are no longer master and student, but equals. setting up the line later in the timeline.

A plain desert or an open space can be equally claustrophobic since there is no place to escape to. No house or cave to hide into. In a way, there is nowhere to run so I do not think it is totally mistaken. The execution of the idea wasn't the best though, the set looked like a run of the mill mine found on planet Earth, I'm sure things could be added to make it look at least subtly otherworldly so it could look less like fan fiction scene filmed in a factory round the corner.

Some really nice observations. I especially like your analysis fo why the Vader introduction is so feeble, I felt it, but didn't think it, you're bang on. It was atrocious and the wide open spaces is certainly part of it. Having Vader march around barren open spaces is just so...Drab. Also, the lack of good dialogue, between him and Obi Wan, is unforgivable. The history between these two, the degree they must have turned over a meeting in their minds...One would expect Obi Wan to at least say something, or Vader to express his hatred. Actually their meeting resembles that of two strangers more than characters who know one another. Whatsmore, Obi Wan neglecting his training while being Luke's only defender is trite nonsense just for the sake of creating a dramatic scenario. Gods, this show is just so bad. It's worse than the sequels, no doubt.

To quote Count Dooku: “I’ve been looking forward to this”. I’ve said this on other reviews, a lot of people who like this show say that Vader let Obi Wan be taken by that droid was because of "him wanting a challenge" or being "underwhelmed by that fight". Darth Vader (who has been described by actors and others involved in the show as being in his peak) wouldn't have let a little bit of fire stop him from capturing a man he’s been murderously searching for ten years. Even if their encounter was underwhelming, Vader’s ultimate goal in life was to find Obi Wan and make him suffer the way he did on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. Plus Vader was able to put out the fire with the force moments ago, why couldn’t he just do that again. Also, why wouldn’t he just walk through the fire or simply leap over it, since his suit protects him from pretty much anything. But clearly the Galactic Empire known as Disney and Darth Kathleen Kennedy don’t understand how to honour what has come before! As Obi Wan says in the movie that started it all: “I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”

Vadar does want to torture Obi-Wan and make him suffer slowly and for a long time but I thought once Vadar saw Kenobi being picked up by that Robot and because Vadar felt how weak Kenobi had become that Vadar thought I will see where he goes and track him down and see if there are more Jedi around him. Buy I feel you....if Vadar wanted to put out that fire he could of. He also could have used the force to crush that robot before it reached Kenobi to pick him up. Simon Pegg was probably the leading voice of hate for the prequels at that time.

The ANH dialogue now only makes sense if Vader was still talking about Mustafar - which is conversation that they would have had, when they met... So it's like he's just saved the conversation he wanted to have 9 years earlier for that moment. Like when you think of a cutting retort, but the person has already left the room.
EDIT: OK, so there are people who apparently don't understand subtext is a thing in dialogue.
    1. Obi-Wan has ALREADY told the audience in ANH, Darth Vader was 'a young Jedi' who was 'a pupil of mine, until he turned to evil'.
    2. When I left you... is not literally 'walked away from', it's talking about leaving behind THE JEDI to use THE DARK SIDE, and so when he meets Obi-Wan he has a philosophical point; under the Jedi, as your pupil, I was a 'learner' i.e. naive, but NOW, with THE DARK SIDE, he has surpassed Obi-Wan.
    3. If you watch THE PREQUELS again, you'll notice how Anakin says that Obi-Wan is holding him back, and jealous, and he wants more POWER.
    4. He also tells Obi-Wan he does not fear the DARK SIDE.
    5. If Obi-Wan and Vader meet between ROTS and ANH, Sidious is now HIS MASTER, and so it's dumb for him to compare himself to Obi-Wan AS THE ROLES REVERSED, when he has ALREADY met Obi-Wan with Sidious as his master.
    6. There's no 'circle to complete', if they already met when Vader was a DARK SIDE Force user, because there's no sense of CLOSURE from their PREVIOUS duel on Mustafar.
    7. In THE PREQUELS, Anakin is clearly shown as being supremely arrogant, and later a hateful man, so there is NO WAY, he would ever call himself "A LEARNER" using the DARK SIDE 10 YEARS AFTER he left Obi-Wan. "Learner" must refer to his naivety as merely a Jedi apprentice of Obi-Wan, without knowing THE POWER of the dark side. This is a conversation about whether LIGHT or DARK is the better.
    8. Yoda fucking tells us the DARK SIDE is QUICKER, so 10 years would be ample time - and practically the same amount of time Anakin had as a Jedi.
    9. Vader would be too proud to state that he lost the previous duel on Mustafar. If they had met once or twice in the intervening years, it would be an entirely different conversation in ANH.

In the OT, Vader says, "Obi-Wan has taught you well", perhaps thinking that Luke was a padawan to Obi-Wan his whole life (and not knowing that he was also mentored by Yoda).
But here, in this fan film TV show, Vader knows that Obi-Wan was a coward, idiot and weak in the Force, so it's weird he comes to that conclusion. I'm fairly confident now that Kennedy/LF has made this show intentionally about sad Obi-Wan, and about racism against Moses and gaslighting articles, in order to legitimise her shitty sequels as being in the same conversation.

He was taught by Obi-Wan from 10 years old, and that was the custom of the Jedi, that Anakin knew. It would be weird if he assumed Luke had not been trained from a young age.
In ROTJ, he says, 'Obi-Wan once thought as you do', implying that Luke has the same mindset about the Force, light & dark. Evidently, things that Luke says or does reminds him of Obi-Wan - or he makes those assumptions, based on seeing Obi-Wan on the Death Star when Luke was there, knowing Obi-Wan is one of the few Jedi that would have been around to train Luke.

I'd say this is all part of the KK and story group revisionism on the sequels. Of course this is BS, because it was mainly the media attacking the prequels, and mainly the media in the Disney era attacking fans.
      a. Obi-Wan is a success, and then the conversation can be, 'Hmm, maybe Jake Skywalker was fucking amazing...?'
      b. It dies on its ass, and LF can say, 'Well, it's the racists and man-babies again, amirite? Just can't please them. Fucking stupid fans. Even when we have McGregor back...'

No way is this worse than BoBF for me. Yeah Kenobi isn't the guy we remember him to be, but at least that makes sense. And I will be shocked if he doesn't end up being more like we knew him from the original 6 films by the end of this thing.
All the characters in Kenobi have fairly clear motivations aside from Reva (which will be explained by the time the series ends) where as far as I can tell, Boba had no real motivation for anything he did in BoBF. Oh yes, he's a changed man because his time with the Tuskens, so he wants to take over a crime syndicate & lead the other crime families... except he just doesn't want to do any crimes or hurt anyone. Yeah, no. That was weak. This show is 100% better- bigger budget, better plot, better acting, more believable character motivations, no horrible neon scooters.
Edit- also just to iterate on what the other person said, but when Maul & Kenobi finally meet again is much further down the timeline than when this show takes place. Rebels isn't for another 5 or more years, and we see in that show that Kenobi looks the way he does in the OT when they meet. Anyone complaining saying "ohhh, Ben & Vader meeting in this show breaks canon" would be crying the same thing, just replace Vader with Maul. Some people just can't be happy with anything.

Your comments about using narrow corridors and enclosed spaces to make Vader seem more intimidating are almost correct, but you forgot one critical element:
This version of Vader has a force ability to teleport to any place on the planet that is just off camera, then menacingly step into sight of the camera and cut off any hope of retreat while walking excruciatingly slowly because his victim has lost all hope of escape.
I think he learned this technique from Jason Voorhees.
    Jason was very intimidating.
Honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised if this Vader had traded in his lightsaber for a machete.

22:11 In fairness, I would say that that is less a question of "don't give us the 'rematch of the century' or give it your complete attention" and more "if you're cutting away, have something interesting to cut to".
Every Vader fight in the OT (vs Obiwan on the Death Star, vs Luke on Bespin, vs Luke on the second Death Star) was interrupted, too (the others' attempts to get back to the Falcon, Lando and Co. escaping custody, the ground battle on Endor and the space battle against the Imperial fleet). But they were interrupted by events of equal weight and gravitas, events that deserved to be shown in concurrance with the Vader fight of the moment.
On the Death Star, their whole mission was to disable the tractor beam, then to rescue Leia and escape. Obiwan's part becomes stalling for time to give our heroes an out, so we need to see them make progress while he fights.
Luke's whole mission going to Bespin is to rescue his friends, but this is meant to be a mistake on his part, an example of why he wasn't ready to fight Vader. So showing that his friends could escape on their own needed to happen while he was fighting (and losing to) Vader.
And in RotJ, the battle is narratively the Final Battle against the Empire. Yes, logistically, there would be (and in the EU, was) much more to do, but this is the leader of the Empire and their most destructive weapon. All cards are figuratively on the table and the Rebels have to win every battle. It is not enough to defeat Vader and the Emperor, the other battles that interrupt the Vader fight here are worthy to do so.
In the meantime, we can only judge the interruptions to this episode's Vader fight by how much of a threat Space Moses is and she isn't. She's been shown to be incompetent and unhinged. Not to mention that we're meant to buy that Baby Leia is the fastest 10 year old ever, able to flee grown men twice as tall for more than three seconds. These interruptions just aren't worth the time of day.
So I can see these "writers" thinking they can cut away from Obiwan vs Vader here, while not understanding why other such example work and their attempt wouldn't.

Overall a highly articulate though sometimes snooty review that captures the many egregious problems
    Let's face the facts
    1) all continuity error are absolutely intentional because #KathleenKennedy hates the original #StarWars and all her efforts have been intended to destroy it
    2) the correctly #SJW writers and directors readily explain the bad scripts, actors and movie production. They are talentless and mostly undeserving of the the privilege of contributing to this once great franchise
    3) one can easily see how the arc of #ObiWan follows Han and the great #Luke's fate to be cast aside like trash to make way for #KathleenKennedy's #TheForceIsFemale bludgeoning of the original #StarWarsUniverse
Last, as is common in the #WokeAge any criticism is immediately dismissed as misogynistic, homophonic or racist. But the destruction is now near complete #Kenobi
