The Netherlands has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 63 times since making its debut as one of the seven countries at the first contest in 1956. The country has missed only four contests, twice because the dates coincided with Remembrance of the Dead (1985, 1991) and twice because of being relegated due to poor results the previous year (1995 and 2002). The Netherlands hosted the contest in Hilversum (1958), Amsterdam (1970), twice in The Hague (1976 and 1980) and Rotterdam (2021).
The Netherlands has won the contest five times, with Corry Brokken (1957), Teddy Scholten (1959), Lenny Kuhr in a four-way tie (1969), Teach-In (1975) and Duncan Laurence (2019). The country's other top five results are Sandra and Andres fourth (1972), Mouth and MacNeal third (1974), Maggie MacNeal fifth (1980), Marcha fifth (1987), Edsilia Rombley fourth (1998), and second with The Common Linnets (2014). It has finished last in 1958, 1962, 1963, 1968, and in the second semi-final in 2011.
After the introduction of semi-finals in 2004, the Netherlands failed to reach the final for eight years in a row from 2005 to 2012, but has since reached eight of the last ten finals.

2014 and 2019 the best
2020 had way too many good songs, it would’ve qualified because they won but it wouldn’t have done well due to the quality of the songs. Even germanys was good

Anouk's Birds was a turning point for the Netherlands at the contest. A Beautiful, mesmerising song that I still return to to this day.
Then there was Duncan Laurence becoming the 5th and most recent Dutch Eurovision winner
Crazy that they went for years with awful entries and not qualifying only to then get top 10 in 2013 and then nearly win in 2014. Such an insane comeback.
On another note, I think they had a really strong 2010s. Obviously they won in 2019, but 2014-17 was also a great run of form.
Lastly, 2021 was so undeserved. The staging let it down but it was such a wonderful song.
The Netherlands dropped the national selection after 2012. Anouk said she wanted to represent the Netherlands in 2013, but only if she would be selected internally. And, to be honest, she knows what's good and what's bad. In my opinion, the Dutch Eurovision entry should always be selected by people who know what works and what doesn't, even though also then mistakes can be made (2023). The Dutch people (tja, sorry landgenoten) are not the ones who should choose.
It’s because we realised that unproffesional artist are not the right choose so then we started to put for a long time famous artist on the stage

@@meindertbrouwer279 and 2023 is a rare exception of a slip up, regardless of what I think about the songs selected they all minus 2 qualified and this year will definitely qualify as well
The Netherlands has been 'diverse' since the beginning, before it was a thing elsewhere.

Yeah, 2019 was the definition of an amazing contest. Some underrated countries did very well

I still hope for Slovenia's first victory. But The Netherlands had already won four times prior so it's not exactly the same. I didn't realize it didn't qualify from 2005 to 2012.

Netherlands in 2010's and early 2020's is like we have USA at Eurovision..too many generic pop songs and many of them sound very similar. I'm glad 2024 has finally something different to offer. Good luck to you🤗 Also if I notice that right 2022 was the first year since 1998 to have song in Dutch. And then this year again!!

The Netherlands were my 4th this year and the fact they didn't qualify made me very sad. It was undeserved.
Just realized The Netherlands in the 20th has been a major taco fest. In all seriousness, I do love their 1980 and 1984 entry.
look at the amount of NQ’s that they got with the National Selection… and now Dutchies want a National Selection/NF back? with internal they only got 2 NQ’s so far….
2014 is my fave - they were the moral winners! 1992 my 2nd and 2018 3rd. Then 1968 and 1971
I would really love to see a Dutch win in 2014! Although Montenegro and Armenia were way better
They have had some great tunes, personal favourite has to be Frizzle Sizzle in 1986. Absolutely loved them…IN PARTICULAR KARIN VASBLOM ❤️
The Netherlands had a rough 8 years during the late 2000s and early 2010s, didn't they?? Honestly, they deserved to qualify in 2005, 2008 and 2012 in my opinion. I also like their 2007 entry though I think she should've sung the Dutch Version. Unpopular opinion but I really like their 2015 one too, yeah the staging was pretty basic but I still like listening to it. They had a pretty good song this year, but it was kinda killed with its' staging and the singers' vocals, no offense to the artists or the country 🇬🇷♥️🇳🇱
I really hope we'll get back Nationaal Songfestival with the recent UMK format.

I don’t think that bringing National Songfestival is such a good idea, because with that concept, only Re-Union has managed to qualify to the Grand Final in 2004 for The Netherlands and the rest up until 2012 has all resulted in non-qualifications!
@@vikramleon That's because our former broadcasters didn't know what to do and aimed for the wrong criteria. Things are different now. With good songs, we'd get good results. Simple as that.

2023 would've qualified if they'd maintained this arrangement from the beginning and not made people too used to the version they struggled with singing live.
