  • Welcome to another trip report. Video 2 out of 9 on my way to and in China along the Silk-Road.
    In this video I'll be travelling on a Talgo sleeper train from Berlin Ostbahnhof in Germany via Poland and Belarus to Moscow Beloruskaja in Russia.
    CORRECTION: The train can be booked 60 days in advance, not 45 like I mentioned in the video. Most national trains of the RZD can be booked 45 days in advance. (when this train is fully booked, there are many alternatives as well).
    I will launch a website with more information soon www.trainviking.com

    • @Trainviking
      @Trainviking  Před 4 lety +2

      I know there are some official limitations. But I also know that they make an exception when you take a train that comes from Western Europe (in this case the EU) to Russia. I'm not allowed to take for example a train from Minsk to St. Petersburg (what would make more sense if you're planning to go to St. Petersburg) or to travel on a train that starts in Belarus but this is fine. This is a kind of complicated to explain and rules may change as well by the day (als depending on what kind of passport you have).

    One little question: when crossing the Polish-Belarusian border, will your passport get stamped at both sides, or just on the Belarusian side? (I once crossed the Croatian-Slovenian border and I did not even get stamped at either side, even holding a Chinese passport with Spanish residence card.)

    • @Trainviking
      @Trainviking  Před 4 lety +3

      Okay this is a very interesting question and also political (I don't know if it's political when you're Chinese by the way). Officially all border crossings between Belarus and Russia over land are not allowed for European Union residents due to the sanctions against Russia, Russia does this back to be annoying to us. However, they tolerate it when you have a visa for Russia and Belarus and your train journey starts or ends in the European Union (since there are trains from all over the European Union to Russia). All trains from the European Union will cross the same border between Belarus and Russia so this means this is the only border where they tolerate it when you cross it. I never heard people got denied because of crossing this border the way I told you. However when you want to go by train from Belarus to St. Petersburg, you need to travel to Moscow first and otherwise it should be to Tallin and than you can cross the border from Estonia to Russia.
      When I go back to your question. The passports where checked at both sides of the border. When you enter the European Union over land they will check everything really well but when you leave the E.U. it's pretty easy in general, they just check your identity to see if you're not a criminal. Croatia and Slovenia used to be one country of course so maybe they just work together, it's both e.u. but Croatia is no Schengen I guess.

    • @harveytsai3726
      @harveytsai3726 Před 4 lety +1

      @@Trainviking Thanks a lot to your thorough answer, I am only asking because I am curious about collecting border check stamps lol. Exactly because Croatia is not inside Schengen area, so sometimes passports will get stamped, but the curious thing is that I entered Croatia from Hungary, where I got stamped at both sides, but when I got back from Croatia to Slovenia, no stamps. Maybe it just depends on the local authorities.

      At this moment, it's not possible. However, back then, I didn't go through Russian pasport control, only in Belarus. Officially, that's not allowed for Westerners, but they basically allow everyone with a Western European pasport to go to Russia by any train that started in the E.U.
      Only occasionally, they pick out some passengers to provocative for political reasons (and on paper, they have the right to do so).
      Even now, with the entire political situation, I think it would be great to see this service relaunched again. It's an important transportation method for people visiting family for example.

  • @Advancedkid

    Average speed for this 1800km distance 80 km/h (covered in 23 hrs) is a shame. Certainly several things need to be improved / upgraded. Certainly, the technology exists to have this train cover this distance at only 12hrs or less. The luxurious train could still be used for a night time scheduling between Berlin and Moscow in both directions. For exampe, the night time sleeper train leaving either Berlin or Moscow at 21:00 hrs to arrive in the morning 12 hrs later. Daytime scheduling with regular EC type trains leaving either Berlin or Moscow at 6:00am arriving in the other city in the early evening.
    Kudos for eliminating the bogie exchange rituals, but please fix the average speed.

    • @Trainviking
      @Trainviking  Před rokem

      I understand what you mean, however this is also the experience of traveling. It doesn't need to be fast all the time. For a sleeper train on this distance it would be nice though to see it arriving a bit earlier at the day.
      Somehow I think in the future, when there will be high-speed sleeper trains, there might be some great developments on this topic. For example, Amsterdam - Malaga, this is for 95% on high-speed lines and would provide a great connection (let's make it commercial more realistic and lets say Paris - Malaga).

    • @Trainviking

      They just allow you. Every westerner can do this. Only on paper they don't allow you to do this but in reality it's fine (as long as your in a train that started in western Europe)

      I already wrote a comment, saw a typo but I deleted it, instead of hitting the edit button...
      Planes are faster indeed, take in consideration, you need to go from the city centre to the airport, through customs, do your luggage, so the plain will cost more time than might look. Despites that, this will safe a night in a hotel. Apart from that the environmental impact by plane is a lot more than when you travel by train. Planes are really damaging to.the environment.
      And when it comes to costs, if depends on your nationality, but since I also needed a visum for Belarus, I think the plane would be cheaper after all for people with a European Union passport.

    Tomorrow go by this train from Berlin to Moscow. Hope compartments aren’t too tiny. Have heard many bad reviews on this train. Seems like Spanish manufacturer Talgo knows few about long distance journeys. Russian Siemens cars are much better.

      I've heard some great stories as well on the Siemens cars in Russia. And talgo is pretty good. It depends a bit on the route as well. For example talgo high speed trains are really nice (I did a trip report on this as well, will be online soon). Enjoy your ride!
