  • I'm comparing Monitor Ghosting/Black Smearing on 1ms Budget IPS and VA Monitors. Which is worse? What does it look like in gaming and productivity? How does this relate to manufacture spec sheets and response times? I'm going to answer all of these.

    I bought a gaming VA monitor from MSI 3 years ago. It said 1ms response time and wasnt that cheap so i thought i was getting something good.
    The blur was so annoying. Im glad you mentioned Hades because thats one of the game i played on it and i couldnt believe how bad it was.
    Since then i have always research what monitor to buy and i settled for an IPS panel and ghosting is completely unnoticeable if thats there at all.

    there's an interesting observation also, I have the ViewSonic vx2428j, it has a 1 ms response time (GTG) but when enabling the ultra-fast mode, a white ghosting appears, but the catch is that this only occurs in the user defined colors, meaning if all red, green, and blue are set to 100'% brightness, the issue will show, that's different from using the built in modes, like bluish, or native, when using them i notice that the brightness goes down a bit and the ghosting disappears completely when enabling the ultra-fast mode, it's interesting.

    something I would like to mention, the UFO ghost test is representative of both monitor ghosting and interpreted ghosting (ghosting you see from lower refresh rates), not interpreted ghosting of a camera. By that, I mean that the camera has to match speed with the UFO and follow it in order for you to see the amount of ghosting you would see when gaming or tracking a moving object. If you compared both monitors while tracking the moving UFO, we would see a large difference in motion clarity, especially dark level transitions

    Spent about 4 days of non stop reading, watching and digging forums about ghosting/smearing on VA -- since I want to get 27 2k curved monitor, and set my eyes on Gigabyte G27QC.
    Some mention it, some ignore it, some say it is there, but only matter if you care about it (great answer, indeed...). Not sure how GAMING monitor with smearing can have Gaming at 8.2 on Rtings... No idea how it works, really.
    The sad thing is - I just have to find some huge store with working monitors, and creep around, comparing ISP with VA, until I just find what I like.

    I just bought a very cheap IPS for under 70 USD! It's 24 inch 1080p with 180Hz. I tried all the ghosting tests and motion blur tests in the UFO test and I don't see bad artifacts in the monitor. It's set to extreme overdrive but I don't see any inverse ghosting. A good buy in my book. The brand is ELSA but I think it's a sub brand of Nvision. I just can't believe how cheap I got this.

    Thanks! I learned a lot from this. How do hertz come into play with all this? Gaming vise. Are they just important? Less important?
    Edit: I have an old Asus VS247 (which advertises 2ms GTG), and gaming is REALLY painful. Can't see much in shooters, either I'm moving the camera fast or the targets are fast, so all I see is a blur. And games similar to the ufo test, are painful to look at. Especially when its the background that's moving fast, while the player/target is stationary. I only bared to play one game like that a bit, and I had to keep my eyes off screen and just look through my peripheral vision, so the blur doesn't hurt my eyes. And if both player and target are moving I can hardly tell them apart. xD

    • @ReviewsForLifeYT
      @ReviewsForLifeYT  Před 2 lety

      Hz and framerate measure the same thing(e.g. 60Hz = 60fps). There's 2 parts to framerate- the #of frames your computer can produce each second, and the # of frames your monitor can display each second. For fast paced games like shooters, I value framerate above everything. This means I would play games in potato quality (low graphics, 720p) just so I can max out the monitor's framerate. Ccasual games like farmville, Hz doesn't matter as much.
      Your monitor seems pretty old (2012?). Maybe it's time to look at buying a new one? :)

    • @ThisIsAUsername69
      @ThisIsAUsername69 Před 2 lety

      @@ReviewsForLifeYT Gottcha! Yeah makes sense. So basically both are important to have good gaming experience. good response time means things will look clearer moving, and high hz means youll actually see it at higher speeds, rather than just teleporting across the screen. Yeah, its silly I can run shooters like Apex at above 100-140fps no problem but its pointless on my screen. Yeah its super old, and I've been looking into new ones, just need to gather enough munniez and see whats available in my country when I do. xD
      Thanks man!

    Here wanting someone to answer my question. The problem of VA ghosting in dark sections can be improved if I play to lower frames? Hades, Tunic and platform games is where it suffers most and I don’t see the need to play more than 60fps. Works like a charm on a 120hz CRT

      try a slower overdrive mode, like "normal". Otherwise, nothing you can really do but buy a better monitor.

    Problem is the quality of VA panel monitor. I mean, let's look at high quality IPS vs VA panel. You know who wins? Check out hardware unboxed charts (best monitor reviewer ever).
    Hint: Samsung Odyssey G7 (VA panel) beats all of the IPS / Nano-IPS monitors in terms of response times, therefore you won't see any ghosting or smearing as you have shown on the video.

      @@Frank_Pods Even now as second hand it's a pretty good price. I've bought a brand new one for 350 euros. That was a steal. But the next price in my country is 375 euros. That's not too bad either. Prices are for the 27inch version. With second hand I've seen them around 300 euros. Mostly 300 though.

    • @sn.k7811

      Because VA panels has much more contrast ratio than IPS panel and VA panels for budget more cheaper than IPS. Example Samsung Odyssey G3 S24AG30 (144hz) this monitor very very slow response time and price 120 dollars.

    I'm so disappointed I had to see the horrible effects of ghosting the hard way on a new monitor I bought recently. The effect on Hades is exactly, if not worse than when I'm playing XCOM2. It's unbearable.
    I had to return and I'm sticking with an IPS display until VA technology can be on par.

    • @iek1229
      @iek1229 Před 2 lety +2

      They are already on par. The new Samsung Odyssey G7 VA panel is outright one of the best panel available even when compared to high end IPS. You get to enjoy high contrast of VA without the usual ghosting and long response time issue (even better than many high end IPS out there). Unfortunately they only made it 27" 1440p as of now, no other monitors use the same panel yet and I don't understand why
