  • Forget Dark Phoenix which you probably have already! X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 capped off the original X-Men trilogy that began with Bryan Singer and completed by Brett "The Rat" Ratner. Does it hold up? No. But does it deserve to be hated cause it's bad and not very good? Also no. This is our review.

I'd imagine it's less to do with the quality of the movie itself and how hard it failed at what it was meant to adapt. Dark Phoenix is probably the most famous X-Men story and regardless of the quality or lack thereof of the movie itself, it was a piss poor adaptation of that story. Killing off Scott right at the start, trading Jean's sacrifice for having her beg Logan to kill her, which he does while confessing his love along with the nature of the Phoenix are elements that differ so drastically from what people expect that it left a bad taste for a lot of people.
Thanks to the 90's cartoon, that story arc was somewhat known to general audiences so it wouldn't just be the die hard comic fans disappointed by a poor adaptation of what said cartoon did quite well

It adapted a decent storyline from the comics, and had some really cool moments, like Mag’s escape from the plastic prison, and Jean’s sacrifice at the end. It was miles better than the first one and light years better than The Last Stand.

Agreed. Jackman's Wolverine was good but his potrayal was milked way too much. He did well but is not unreplaceable, just bring in a new shorter, uglier Wolverine who's less of a leader, is educated like he is in the comics, and can be the foil to an actually likeable Cyclops. Then I'll judge if Jackman was truly the definitive Wolverine.
They should make Cyclops similar to Captain America in the MCU anyway. Maybe a bit old school and eager to impress, but still admirable with how morally fair-headed he remains. Then make Wolverine the ugly fucker who we'd be willing to dislike based on how he doesn't always co-operate with the team, but we'll respect because he does the right thing when he needs to and also has badass powers when worse comes to worst.
But yeah Jackman's Wolverine was unfortunately misrepresented as the main man of the X-Men. He was still good but I think only irreplaceable if someone's never read any good X-Men stories where Wolverine isn't front and centre

Agreed. It was the best comic book movie at its time along with Spider-Man 2 and still holds up pretty well as a movie that feels like an X-Men story as opposed to a generic superhero/action/disaster movie plot of powerful mutant takes over Statue of Liberty or powerful mutant moves giant bridge to have a free for all battle or something like that. Instead, it felt like an episode of the 90s animated series since the action was more motivated by the characters and their powers, values, character arcs, etc.
Of the main 6 (soon to be 7) X-Men movies it's probably 3rd imo anyway. Behind First Class and DoFP. Probably 4th best overall behind Logan too if we include the Wolverine trilogy as well. Good movie anyway

Key word, *was* . Don't get me wrong, it's still okay (for comparison's sake, it's better than most DCEU movies) but the only reason it's held in any kind of regard is that it came out at a time when Spider-Man and Blade were the only comic book movies in nearly a decade that wasn't total shit. Keep making them now, in the age of the much better MCU movies, without changing or improving anything (not naming any Apocaly- names. I meant names.), there's a reason the series is finding more success in spinoffs like Deadpool and Logan than any mainline X-Men film.
