Stan, I want to take a few seconds to thank you for this video. I watched it about 2 years ago, since then I made 5 harps and each one is so amazing. Thank You so much.
tried it with a big plastic canister and it worked right away! Thanks a lot!
What a wonderful guy. Wish he was a neighbor of mine. Michael, Birmingham, UK
This is so wonderful! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much! And thanks to Aeol and the swirls of the wind..
I can not wait to make this and show others how to do it! You're a gem!
Saya ga ngerti apa kamu katakan
Thank you for the great resources! I only heard about aeolian harps yesterday and I'm going to try making a cardboard box one this weekend.
This is fabulous! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for good instruction and love the sounds from them
Very nice. Can't wait to try this. Thank you!
Stan the man! cool video Sir. Thank you for posting it.
I’m going to make one of these. So cool.
Thank you for making this video. I will make one of these with my daughter. Very neat.
I guess you could call this an iHarp! Must make one - they are so cool.
That is amazing. ! Thank you !
thanks what a great natural instrument.
Sir, you have a great personality. Thanks for posting the video.
Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Peace
Thank you for showing us how to do this!!!!!! :)
Nice
I was able to make my own Aeolian harp thanx to the instructions
awesome!!!!!!!!! thank you sir!!!!
Ugh gotta try this.. thank you sir
Nice Mr. H. Also what a great use for something that would end up in a land fill.
Thank you Mr. Stan Hershonik. I've made a few of these in my life, mostly using piano wire, old hollow fishing net floats or tin cans etc. as resonators, but I love your approach. I'll try this out myself. Great video!
I tried making a few in this style and to no avail yet. How much wind does there need to be to make it sing?
@@PamelaMartinez-pv4gj Its about getting the string at the right tension/Pitch. For example the nylon strings on a classical guitar work great especially if they are tuned around the G-B range below middle C. I got my classical guitar to work yesterday in the wind which really suprised me!
Wow that is amazing!! Sounds like 👽 sounds.
Fantastic:D
Thank you Stan! Great lesson for us!
You inspired me to make one. Now all I have to do is wait for some wind.
thx for that nice video
Groooovy
I just learned of these last night in a novel I was reading. Had to come online to see what they were how they worked. I really want to do one. Cardboard box in brilliant Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on how to do this in an affordable way.
wow, i came across this instrument reading 'Middlemarch', what was your book?
@@youtubecommentor1338 LOL This was a year ago I posted and then forgot to try this. Darn . I also forgot what book I was reading I read so many. So I went back to read intro on Middlemarch and I do believe it could have been the same book. I also noticed it is free on Kindle right now and I often grab free kindle books. I just downloaded it as I finished my last book last night. HA who am I kidding it was more like 1AM this morning.
@@shadesofidaho there was this young Ladislaw comparing the voice of Dorothea with the sound of an Aeolian Harp. btw, now u have to try the harp...i just reminded u twice so no excuses!!
@@youtubecommentor1338 Well it appears it is going to be another rainy day so today might just be the day. Thank you!
Thankyou
Shall make one.
WHOOOAAAA
THank you O:)
I was just reading up a little on these things and apparently all the strings should be tuned to the same pitch. Apparently it's not the notes that are played by the wind but the harmonics on the notes.
***** Hi, No I'm afraid I haven't . I'll get round to it one day. I think you can probably tune it to what ever you like. I think you're right , different pitches would be better and produce different harmonics.
this site seems quite informative: www.usca.edu/math/~mathdept/hsg/aeolian.html
Anyway, hope it sounds great. Let me know if it worked well. :)
What pound strength of south bend fishing line do you use??
and thankyou for such great videos!
Hola, matters more the resistance or thickness? lbs or millimeters? thx.
Interesting thanks !!
Im guessing for resonance purposes a hollow body is needed to hear the vibrations ??
What is the main difference in terms of construction between a conventional harp and an aeolian harp?
Are they essentially the same instrument but just used in a different way?
Dee Ef Sea aeolian part of the harp is "wind". Played by wind , whereas a regular harp is played by hand plucking out the notes
Hi I was wondering if you could rub resin from a violin resin bar on the strings. It is what makes the violin sing. I believe that if you rubbed the strings with resin from the bar, it would make the strings sing more from extra friction that the resin would produce. What do you think? I have not tried it yet though.
Have you tried it? It will make more friction and the wind will not roll off so easy.
You do not have to be so rude, you have not tried it as well as I but I will and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, if I'm right I'm right. That's what makes the world go around when people experiment and try. Nothing wrong with trying.
It shouldn't make any difference. The rosin is only used to make the horse hair on the bow grab the string.
I have a hard time winding the strings tight enough. It would help to know what kind of knots you use. I do macreme` and Dad was a sailor, so I know a little about knots.
i would like to make an engine using windharps to fly a spaceship.
You never know !! Most innovations were stumbled upon !!
are you still there? I'm looking on amazon (quarantined) and only see 20lb or 30lb test options... which way should I compromise? thanks for help :)
I used 25 lb test fishing line ( South Bend )
how fast does the wind have to be. I've made a few and no sound yet. any ideas why.
Mine isn't working at all. What could be the problem??
okay man this is not working.
i used an old drawer and some fishing line and winded it up four times..
there are some nice notes by playing by the fingers but no sound in the wind, why??
Good video, and nice build. I was thinking of making one as a project with my grand daughters but, frankly, I can’t stand the sound they make.
when you play the apple keyboard!!
fishing line must b specify
Corrugation, if that's what it is.
Are there any gurus out there who has experience with Aeolian harps?
Mr Google
Title: 5 minutes
Video: 10 minutes
Jokes aside, this is a good video!
This guy is rich
I built this project to the T and it didn't work. I even held it against a fan, not a peep. what am I doing wrong here?
same here. I'm wondering how much wind there needs to be.
witchery
10:52 video to show how to make a harp in 5 minutes ;)
Don't be a jerk. He started the stopwatch at 3:01 and stopped at exactly 8:01. Which is exactly 5 minutes.
Stephen King brought me here.
