  • Here is the Vibey Studios Guide To : 'Aeolian Harp'
    An 'Aeolian Harp' is an instrument that is played by the wind.
    You put it in a windy pace and the sound is generated by the action of the wind over the strings which is picked up by a guitar or bass pickup.
    Songs that I've used my Aeolian Harp in include --
    'Sunshine' by Keane and 'Too Sad For Tea 'TS4T' by Felix Pallas -
    Normally I play music in the Lucy Scale.
    The Lucy scale is a Micro-Tonal (25 note per octave) musical tuning system that has it's notes placed in different pitches that can be played via any modified instrument, fret-less instrument or voice. For example when playing a Lucy Scale guitar the fret-board is specially re-fretted to have completely different placement of the frets. The only note staying the same is A at 440 hertz. All of the other notes go up or down exponentially, in intervals created by Pi, likes notes rising on a spiral staircase...
    The normal straight 12 note per octave equally tempered scale sounds restrictive and overturned to me. Like it’s been ‘artificially sweetened’. Like a rigid straight staircase.
    In LucyTuning we use notes that are all equally out of tune as much as they are in tune and yet you are able to play everything together at the same time.
    You can feel the effects caused by the musical frequencies vibrating against each other, it allows the listener to get into a higher state of consciousness. I feel it’s very hypnotic, zen and vibey! but do you? The music seems to be especially good when used as background music for narrated documentaries or films… it's like the tuning opens up the mind for fresh ideas...
    I also find the most entrancing and hypnotic effects happen when you play in the natural world, you find yourself 'in key' with it! playing with the sounds of nature and animals around you. I found that animals communicate with phrases using pitches and intervals found in the Lucy Scale.
    Back when I was 18, on discovering the Lucy Scale I used to practice my Lucy Scale guitar in the garden, I was surprised at the number of times I was able to witness first hand the strange effect of this guitar… Magical things happened! I really learnt to play with the birds!, they would repeat back musical phrases I’d played myself!.. and I could find the notes to their calls on the LucyTuned fretboard of my guitar. I felt that I was in real communication with them.
    I told Charles Lucy, the inventor of the Lucy Scale about this and all about these strange experiences with bird song and Charles was fascinated. He then got in touch with an American academic who was doing a PHD in Marine Biology, a few months later we were invited to Hawaii where I spent weeks talking to whales in the ocean off the Hawaii coast. Yes I was really talking with whales!.. I found that whereas birds seems to communicate quickly, in rapid phrases, whales actually talk very slowly… a bit like the fictitious Elk Trees in Tolkien’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’… over a few weeks I withdrew and went into a sort of dark, sombre and gloomy altered state.. actually I found it really frightening!.. it was like a deep depression…dark and doomy I suppose a bit like the ocean itself... perhaps a bit like how a whale feels?..
    I often make music with recordings of whales and birds and still use the same samples now that I recorded back then.
    In fact several Multi-Platinum, no 1. hit records that I’ve made have whale or owl samples cheekily placed in them! ...Most notably you can hear owl and whales samples in the No 1. Hit single, ‘Here With Me’ that I programmed on for Dido… there are more, see if you can hear them.
    I’d often pitch up the whale samples and pitch down the bird samples, in the relative synchronisation of the speed of the animals heart, So a person can be made to sound like a sped up whale or a slowed down bird can be made to sound a bit like a person. It’s all the same really it’s just a matter of the speed of the perception of the listener.. the human, whale, dolphin or dog... this is the hypothesis.
    I feel that the LucyTuned music creates profoundly psycho-acoustic and hypnotic effects in the listener because the binauraly entrained brain wobbles about and resonates in such a way that it makes the listener feel good and basically ‘bliss out’… I find it like a kind of 'mind massage' …….in my experience the only thing that comes close to it is the aeolian harp.. which is a harp played by the wind…

    Most wind harps are a bit too high pitched for my taste and make me feel like my ears are ringing, I really love the deeper sound of this one. Where in Maine? That's where I live! 😊

    Great video! Love the sound this one makes! Thanks for sharing. Do you have any other videos about this harp? I kinda wish I knew how it was made. It has very nice lines to it. Is it designed for the outdoors? And how big is this thing? I saw no points of reference, like a person standing beside it, for instance. Wonderful sound. The best I've heard... All the best!

      I think it was a G reference tone.

    • @jamessanger
      @jamessanger  Před 2 lety +2

      I think that may be rain landing on the strings... it is quite 'high gain' so just touching the atrings makes a lot of noise.... you couldn't really 'pluck' it... also i found out recently that all the strings are meant to be tuned to the same note !! ... not as a chord !!! anyhow if you like this here re some of my otther songs --> soundcloud.com/jamessanger1/sets/songs-for-sleeping-to

    • @jamessanger
      @jamessanger  Před rokem

      You are meant to tune them all the strings to one note rather that a chord... i cant remember whether this video was made post me finding out that info or pre.... but even if all the strings were all tuned to A lets say I don't think the action of the wind blowing on the strings would create an exact A.... what I tend to do now when using it is to tune it to a note and then re-tune it globally in Melodyne.... I have a few samples in my Ensoniq ASR10 that I have tuned too and I use them sometimes.... I use Peterson Stobescopic tuners too for tuning everything, guitars, synths and the Aeolian harp ......I have both rack mounted version and the pedal version...

    • @jamessanger
      @jamessanger  Před rokem

      in fact if it is tuned to G... it makes sense that it would be playing sharper... IE G#
