- The Ritchey Outback gravel / adventure bike is perhaps my most favorite build to date. Some parts have been swapped, and I think this is its final form. A semi-proper review.

Shimano and everyone, take note: we like silver. Not everyone likes black.
The last Shimano that isn't black that I've used is the Alivio groupset that's 3x. I don't know why they don't make silver components as options.
While I too love silver components. The last silver group that Shimano did was the GRX limited edition. From the sales prices I was seeing on those groups, they did not sell well.
It’s great seeing the outcome of your earlier videos on the grip dyeing, derailleur anodizing removal, etc. What a fantastic bike!
11:00 the noise cancelling knobs probably refers to having some variation in their spacing so that the noise profile is broader rather than having a few peaks, so that it is closer to white noise rather than a music note. That's what they do for motorbike and car tires.
Love it. Like a broadband signal rather than single freq. perhaps, not sure
I was running some pre "noise cancellation tech" 650b x 48s, Juniper Ridge I think. My friend said it sounded like a an electric car was rolling up behind him. Another friend put some noise cancelling 700 x 55's on his MTB. So much quieter. So maybe "cancelling" is relative to how noisy the knobbies were before they spaced things differently.
I run Conti Race Kings on my commuter and RH Humptulips Ridges on my gravel bike. The RH tires are quieter on pavement. Not silent, but quieter. Different shapes/profiles and spacing, so not super scientific, but one anecdote.
Also, I bought them for ride quality, not sound - and they are by far the best clincher tire I’ve ever ridden on gravel.
It is definitely the prettiest bike you own
Easily in the Top Five Classy Bikes of 2023 👍🏻
Thanks so much for all the 'down to earth' approach bicycling info' & reviews. They are 'Legendary'. (Haha)
All the Best in 2024 to you.
Ritchey = Legendary
Run a piece of cable housing on the exposed cable, that way you can run your frame bag traps over it and not pinch the cable. If you use the larger diameter brake housing it will be even less friction, and brake housing will withstand the pinching of your frame bag straps.
Nice hack 🤘
Your channel is awesome, even for a total beginner cyclist like myself. Really appreciate your time/effort in creating this content. Have a great start to the new year!
Truly beautiful and thoughtful build. Really pretty bike that also appears to work well. Also agree with your comments regarding cable routing.
Such a beautiful build!!
Happy New Year!
Sweet build. Thank you. Enjoy your day my friend.
Beautiful bike... Happy New Year 🎉
Great build--nice ride!
Dig the colors and direction you took the build on this. Beautiful bike!
Happy New Year. Love the silver polished components. I always appreciate a well sorted steel frame with good looks.
It's so nice to see silver/chromed parts on bikes again instead of the common black.
I love the look of the bike.
hard to dislike any ritchey build. some gravel king slicks or the rene herse snoqualmie pass' would be awesome for socal all road/gravel riding.
Wow! This bike is candy to the eyes..
I just built the same frame and love it.
Great bike. Glad you’ve been able to ride it and it’s not just on display. If I recall this was a illustration version at sea otter
Very nice job. It looks really good!
Fine review on a fine machine, you have the classic touch on a modern setup, loving the brakes,I would like you to do a full review on them, keep up the good work
Lovely bike and great video, thanks.
De anodized black, and dyed hood rubber dude ur an artist. Congrats its a gorgeous bike ❤
Very entertaining and informative
Just amazing build.
I've run the knobby rene herse tire and thought they were noisy and draggy on pavement, the extra light casing wept for me even with the recommended panaracer sealant. My favorite dirt focused tire, with short pavement, is the Pirelli Cinturato gravel M. Quiet on the road, traction in the dirt.
It’s on my short list of tires to try next. On the Fleecer Ridge now
I built up the same silver drivetrain, but couldn't find the 105 mechanical shifters in silver. Protip: the Sensah Empire Pro shifters have the same cable pull ratio as Shimano road 11 speed, was running those for the last year with no issues.
Dream bike!
I love my green outback! I recently had a Steve Potts steel fork installed which has been a nice upgrade.
Your bike looks gorgeous❤.
Nice looking bike.
DAYUM!!!! I need me some of those pastel coloured temu brifter hoods 🥰
That is amazing with the level of detail that you put into that “Legendary” Ritchey logic Outback. I have considered those Rene Herse’ tires but the Endurance casing is $100 after tax. Jeez! I have those White Industry cranks, true very expensive, but their modular design is super nice. I have White Industry hubs too, super nice!
HAPPY NEW YEAR . Thanks for the update. Looks good. Are you happy with the small? And o also question the the noise cancelling technology, cos mine aren't quiet either 😂
Love your videos
Same frame different build same love for it. Running 2X the front derailleur cable routing on a Large seemed not well thought out. Thanks for the update
The most comfortable drop bar bike.....In the world.
Mine will be ready end of Jan. Waiting for the frameset to arrive from the states. Doing a sram apex axs build.
Just mounted the same tire on my Giant Toughroad. Standard casing. Super difficult to mount however.
I had the green version for over 2 years, I didn't love the long chain stays, then I change it to a Swiss cross and had it for another 2 years, guess what, I got this very same frame, I realized I been missing the Outback, definitely not a climber, but the rest of the time it's an awesome joy partner. Cheers and happy new year from Barcelona.
Fantastic that you were able to ride both
Your further comments make me want the Outback frame and especially the Equal brakes more & more. But I'd probably be inclined to go with the new Microshift Sword groupset. Thx!
Microsoft is making drive trains? You know that is going to be buggy for the first couple iterations.
@@alexandermayer5924 haha *oops, thx
Obv I meant "Microshift Sword"
The outback is the ultimate gravel bike yes i said ULTIMATE!!! The best bike i ever own and have ridden so many!!! Never want to miss my outback !
Why? I just bought one after selling a 3T Exploro
just sold my bike that made me sit down and spin for miles.. a 96 Rocky Mountain Cardiac with foam on the climbing bars and a short but high stem setup fenders racks wife approved seat and a full STX RC-Deore LX mixed 93-96 parts 170mm cranks 21spd MRX gripshift. cantilevers and all black parts other than the wheels and a few random bits. the 2021 Norco indie 4 doesn't really fill it's place
that whole noise cancelling thing is when they have different sizes of the same block pattern. almost never seen on bikes but very visible on automotive. at high speeds a single repeating pattern will create a drone note and having it alternate will spread that around a little... cancellation.. lol well you have two tires both creating the same drone. FML
I love this video. The Ritchie Outback is my dream build. Would have any qualms about riding this bike loaded across the country?
Great looking bike! Venture Max bars?
I have the René Herse Umtanum Ridge 650x55 on my Outback and they are definitely very quiet and vibration free. I have them at 50PSI slightly less than the max at 55.
Why so high pressure? I'm 180 lb and ride 38 mm tires on road at 50 psi. How much clearance do you have on your Outback with the 650x55? Could you run fenders? What do you think would be the max tire width to run fenders in 650?
@@michaelcinibulk9500 I actually have full aluminium fenders and the 55's fiit well. I have them at 50 psi because they roll well at high psi in the cold! Most of my riding now is done on the Outback until we get snow in Montreal, then it will be with a fatbike. I could send you pics. Honestly with the 650 x 55 and full fenders, this is by far the most comfortable I have ever riden. I have many other bikes but none come close to this level of comfort. Hope this helps!
That bike is all it needs to be. Build be me one please! ha
Beautiful aesthetics!
Silver colour gives better low day light visibility due to reflections!
Is there an aluminium alloy version? What's the total weight?
I seem to lose Closed Captions after the first few minutes.
Thank you for calling out the Rene Herse noise canceling lie! Great tires. No need to call em something they are not.
Beutiful. Total cost of build?
Good looking build. What saddle bag that?
It looks pretty sweet. I love the extra TLC on the hoods & derailleur. Makes it special. Enjoy!
I am also find dumbed-down & illogical marketing exacerbating. However, to me these Rene Herse tires are the quietest and smoothest big knob tire I have every ridden-by magnitudes of level(I'm very sensitive to noise and vitiation).
Jon & Rene Herse gets a pass because the tires perform and they have done more than most to combat bike industry myths.
💯
Curious about what you think about the outback compared to the ascent? I recently sold my road logic (albeit w/some regret ) and for the past month kept going back between picking up either an outback or ascent frame. Ultimately decided on the ascent--mainly due to it having a stack/reach that is more suitable for me.
Have you tried or do you think the RH Fleecer Ridge tires would fit this frame? I live in a sandy area and bigger is better in tire size. Currenty running Conti Speed Kings in 2.2 that measure 54cm on my current frame. Love the bike and am thinking about getting one but don't really want to run skinnier tires.
Had those exact tires and loved them until they stopped seating. The bike mechanic said RH only guarantees they will seat once…
That seemed bizarre but yeah they tried with their compressor and couldn’t do it. The tubeless tape is fine so I don’t know.
They are great tires but a PITA to install tubeless
Great looking bike and review. Curious and looked up those calipers. Man, they're expensive at $365.
Right, but that’s for a pair, plus all compressionless housing and fittings you need.
Never clicked faster!
😀
Make sure to elevate and Ice that hand! ;)
@@TheBikeSauce i think i would love the outback. Shame the XS size has compromised trail number. killer build!
Nice looking bike. You don’t need a Garbaruk cage and all that stuff. Replacing the first „knee“ of the GRX 812 derailleur with a WolfTooth Roadlink Direct allows you to run the Shimano 5100 Deore 11 speed 11-51 cassette.
Right on. I wanted to avoid the road link /goat link and keep it as crisp as possible
What trail is this?? Looks sooo fun!!
Awesome build, size small frame you said, mind me asking your height?
I ride a medium. I'm 168cm for reference. I enjoy the extra stack. Took ages to decide on frame size. Totally happy with the M. straight post 80mm stem. Venture max bars
On your build video you put the Ene Bar End Shifter on, any comments please on why you didn't wanna keep it on the final form?
It was Russ’ personal prototype I was testing. I liked it, but I personally shift too frequently for bar end. I need indexed shifting from the hoods.
Most of your audience has never ridden steel, including me. Would be great if you commented on how it rides in comparison to the carbon bikes you have experienced. I went from harsh aluminium to carbon and can't imagine an improvement on that experience. But I love looking at beautiful old school butted chromo frames :-)
Interesting you think that. I had assumed a lot of viewers were into metal bikes. A comparison seems like a decent video idea
How much did you spend altogether on this bike? 🤔
I’m 5’3”. Does it come in an extra small?
what is this handlebar exactly, if I may ask?
What are the chances you’ll meet up w/ Grant PetersEn where you ride?
If you meet him, how will you hide that carbon fork?
Nice work BTW!
What trail are you riding here?
Great build. Where’s the trail?
On-bike is Turnbull canyon area Whittier, CA. B roll is on Fullerton Loop
I gotta ask. Didn’t you build this with a bar end shifter? What happened, was hoping to see how that played out as I’m flirting with the idea myself.
Im about to ride my bicycle,26 inch huffy circa 1990s
Dude. My Xc mtb rim internal width is that wide.
What's your height Nolan ? For sizing reference
5'8" w short inseam
I much prefer mechanical disk brakes on a road or gravel bike. I find the hydraulic brakes have far too much stopping power. As well the mechanicals have far better sensitivity, far easier to apply a little brake.
The owner of Rene Herse has a history of slathering pseudo-science in his marketing.
🙄
Your head bobbing left and right plus your camera shaking every where......
Very snazzy bike. Really nice touch with the silver and brown brake levers 🤌 mad keen to get some for my Surly Cross-check
