Oh hi! Welcome to VoicePlay! They, along with Home Free and Pentatonix, make up the trifecta of contemporary a cappella. VoicePlay started back in 1997 (then called 4:2:Five), and Geoff Castellucci (the bass) and Layne Stein (vocal percussion/baritone) are the two remaining original members. (Earl Elkins Jr- not featured in this video- was another OG member, but he left the group for personal reasons in 2020.) The group is 100% independent, so everything you saw and heard was completely their creative project. Layne created that vocal arrangement, and Eli Jacobson (the bald tenor with the rock god voice) created the special effect background (he's also generally their lighting guy). Video shoot and editing was Layne's responsibility (when Geoff arranges, it's his turn), and their feature artist, Alexa, was in South Korea for the entirety of this shoot and was edited in in post. The guy whose voice you particularly liked is Cesar De La Rosa, VoicePlay's newest member; he''s an absolute delight with the most breathy, emotional bari-tenor you could wish for. These guys are all enormously creative; there is nothing they won't take on. They have covered everything from barbershop to Disney to classic rock to orchestral (you heard me right) to pop and Broadway and video game theme music. They cover BTS as easily as they cover Chris Stapleton or Metallica, and I think that maybe the amount of care and creativity that goes into their video production (again, all them) is only topped by the absolute genius of their arrangements.
Some really fun covers of theirs to check out are Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters", "Hoist the Colours" from Pirates of the Carribbean, "Hellfire" from Disney's Hunchabck of Notre Dame, "Creep" by Radiohead, "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg, and "The Halo Theme" (featuring another OG member returning as a feature, and with a special message at the end that is very worth watching as it shows you an awful lot about the kind of people these guys are). And if none of those grab your attention, pick literally anything else from their channel that *does*; I promise, you will not be disappointed. One thing that these guys are not, is predictable, and they will constantly surprise you with both their creativity and their rather staggering talents. Have fun!
(Oh, and also worth mentioning- Geoff Castellucci, the bass vocalist? He is a whole rabbithole unto himself, and another one that is highly, highly rewarding to check out. His is the kind of voice that comes along maybe once a generation.)

Nice summary! Always love to see new reactors discovering VP and what they can do with songs you 'think you knew'...! Think it was Geoff that said that they would never do a song, unless they could bring something new to it - 'why do what has already been done' - or something along those lines!

Yes. VoicePlay is the most awesome and underrated group. They're independent and do all of the work for their music videos except for camera work and final sudio mixing.
Everything VoicePlay does has a unique twist yet respects the original. Every member has amazing vocal abilities; it's almost frightening to realize the amount of talent here.

Welcome! You are going to have so much fun going down the VoicePlay rabbit hole. The featured artist here is AleXa - although she grew up here, she's part of the K-Pop scene. (Her links are in the description section of the original video). She reached out to them for a collab, and this was the result. Eli assembled the video here, editing together the pieces she sent them to make it look like they were in the same space. Although they've been around for years, they mostly toured, did Disney gigs and cruise lines. When covid hit, they got serious about their videos and turned to online performances. (One of which, Metallica's Nothing Else Matters, led to a recent series of performances with Chicago.) Have fun, and lots of fans will turn out to see what you're up to here! If you're in the mood for a few minutes of ear-to-ear smiling, check out their latest, The Lion Sleeps Tonight. They drop 1 full production and 3 shorts every month: it was supposed to be one of this months' shorts. Instead, they were having so much fun, they couldn't stop and did the whole song.

Voicplay is am an amazingly creative acappella group. They're considered the theater kids of the acappella world and because they are independent from any record labels they are copyright friendly as well. From left to right in this video we have Layne Stein who is the beatboxer/sound effects machine as well as doing arrangements and sound design/mixing for the group, Next with the white on his nose we have baritone Ceasar de La Rosa. He's the newest member of the group bring a lot of sas and theater. Then we have this videos feature singer AleXa. She's a Kpop singer with her own band. Following her we have the groups primary tenor Eli (pronounced Ellie) Jacobson. Eli is quite a rock tenor but can sing everything beautifully. He also does lighting and visual effect for the group. On the far right we have the earthquake machine/bass guitar himself Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci. He's the groups bass singer although he has a pretty wide vocal range and will sing baritone and tenor if needed in a song. He also does a lot of their arrangements and some beatboxing on occassion. He has his own solo channel that you should dfeinitely check out. Most of his videos have some musical instrumentation and are him cloned to sing all parts. He also plays piano and does all the production, editing, arranging, etc for his videos. Also his wife Kathy does a lot of the behind the scenes production work for his channel as well as voiceplay. It's also worth mentioning J. None who you will see featured in a number of their videos. He was a former member who left the group to join the Navy. He still makes guest feature in some of their videos when he can. Much of their production and filming is done at Paticake Studios that is run by Tony Wakim (and Layne Stein) who is a former group member from a number of year back so you'll see him in some of their older videos. You'll also see Earl Elkins who was a founding member of the group with Geoff and Layne back when it was called 42Five. He was the groups high tenor until he left the group a few years back. Most of their videos feature guest singers. Frequent guest include Ashley Diane, Rachel Potter, Adrianna Arellano, Jose Rosario, Omar Cardona, EJ Cardona (Omars brother), Anthony Gargiula, Emoni Wilkins and Deejay Young among others. Pretty much all of the groups members are responsible for the production of the music and the videos and take turns on arrangements. I'd recommend taking a deep dive into their catalog for what strikes your fancy because they have a lot of great music in their catalog. You really can't go wrong.

I enjoyed your reaction and subscribed to your channel. Voice Play, Home Free, and Pentatonix are the top three acapella groups that will bring many subscribers and great interaction to your channel. All three have their own unique style that moves away from traditional full choir or barber shop quartet singing we heard in the past. Pentatonix has a modern, trendy, Pop music style, Home Free has a Country/Folk music Style and Voice Play is very theatrical and frequently called the theater kids of acapella music. Big difference with Voice Play is they are completely independent and work without a record label or contract by choice so they have complete control of their creative expression. They do all of their own arrangements and production mostly in a studio (PattyCake Productions) owned by beatboxer, Layne Stein, and former baritone singer, Tony Wakim. Voice Play and their frequently featured guests are from Orlando Florida and have worked as performers for Universal and/or Disney theme parks. It may be a bit confusing at first seeing different featured guests (J None was a full time member that left to join the Navy but comes back frequently to sing with Voice Play when he is on military leave. His position has not been permanently filled so Voice Play has different guests fill in). It is always good to include the name of the featured guests in your reactions as we love them and consider them to be Voice Play's extended family. This song is from Arcane League Of Legends and the featured guest is AleXa, K Pop artist that was a winner of a television song writing competition. For starters, I would recommend Voice Play's cover of "Valhalla Calling" but check out their playlist and react to songs you know and like- you will never be disappointed!

The first screen from left to right: Layne Stein (beatboxer, baritone+, violinist, aka Carrot Lord, also VioLayne, and original member from 1997), Cesar de La Rosa (baritone and tenor, aka Velvet Sass, newest member replacing either Earl Elkins high tenor or J None (currently in the US Navy chorus) baritone, depending on which guest vocalist they get since they are still one shy), AleXa (K-Pop award winner 2 yrs ago, American but lives in S Korea, with covid rampant, she could not catch a plane, but did her green screen part and audio in Korea, not a member but wanted to do something with VoicePlay), Eli Jacobson (great range, aka Rock God, was in rock bands before coming in to VoicePlay in 2010, he does the lighting, computer gen, green screens (as in this one) and more, as of last year, he did the project for Creep (RadioHead) and will be in the project rotation, previously Layne and Geoff alternated projects), Geoff Castellucci (another original member from high school days, aka Dragon Breath), incredible voice and range, from A0 (growl), B0 (subharmonic), F1 (full chest), B4 (often mix but not necessarily), Bb5 (falsetto). Geoff has his own channel as well for non-acapella using his Geoff clones for harmonies, like VoicePlay, Geoff's solos are also totally independent. They do it all themselves, although they may hire someone in for a specialist - say - prosthetics for instance. Cesar has his own project just started, where the 4 members, low number gets to pick the song and they do an arrangement right before your eyes. Some goodies by VoicePlay: Valhalla Calling (Miracle of Sound), I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt), Tennessee Whiskey, done while Earl and J None were still members and before Cesar, Little Mermaid Medley, Queen in 5 Minutes (also with Earl and J), In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins), In the Hall of the Mountain King (Edvard Grieg 1875), Drunken Sailor, Dragonborn Comes Skyrim, their most recent is The Lion Sleeps Tonight. A couple of Geoff's solos: 16 Tons, Sounds of Silence, Jack's Lament, Ain't No Sunshine.

Many of us find a lot of enjoyment in watching reactors react to VoicePlay for the first time. They do try to put their own personal stamp on everything they do. They do honor the original but then take it in totally different directions.
They are unique in that they cover the widest amount of genres. In addition a lot of their videos are far more theatrical. They all have either worked at Disney or Universal Studios or both and it shows. They are very comfortable giving it their all to get a unique performance.
They are one of the three big names in a cappella. Many people say that in high school PTX would have been student council, VoicePlay would be the theater nerds and Home Free (the third of the big three with a strong country vibe) are out in the parking lot having a party.
If you are into rock you might try reacting to their post apocalyptic trio: Warriors (by Imagine Dragons for a League of Legends tournament) where VioLayne made his initial appearance, the cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On, followed by White Stripes Seven Nation Army. There is a slightly different lineup in each one of those videos.
Geoff Castelucci, the bass singer and Layne Stein, the beatboxer, met in middle school. Along with Earl Eckert, who was their laser high tenor, they started performing in high school. In 1997 they published their first album when they were just out of school under a different group name.
Around 2010 they rebranded themselves as VoicePlay, with five permanent members. As they’ve been around for over 20 years there have been some personnel changes. In 2020, their high tenor left after 23 years and that position has not been filled. All of the other changes have been in the baritone slot. Around 2010, when they rebranded, they brought in Eli Jacobsen who is the bald rock tenor.
That is when Layne switched from baritone to beatboxing leaving an opening for Tony Wakim to come in. When Tony left in 2017, that left a spot and J None came in. He was a permanent member of the group until 2021 when the US Navy recruited him to sing for them. He was recently transferred to a close location so he is a frequent featured artist. When he left, Cesar de la Rosa, white stripe on nose, joined the group. The fifth position is still empty and they fill it with a variety of guest artists. In this video they collaborated with AleXa who is a K-pop artist and they had to use green screen to bring her in as she was still in Korea.
If you click on the description there is more information and in the last several years they’ve started listing everyone in the production because they feature so many guests.
You will get a lot of recommendations, and two of my favorites are the more dramatic pieces: Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and Dragonborn/Skyrim. You really get a theatrical production in those and the music is amazing.
If you check out Geoff’s solo channel, one of my favorites remains his cover of Misty Mountains Cold from the movie The Hobbit, followed closely by I See Fire from Desolation of Smaug. He likes to arrange four and five harmonies, singing all the parts himself and frequently filming a clone of himself for each part. He does not sing a cappella on his channel - he uses instrumentation that he creates using his keyboard and plug-ins.
If you’re going to cover my favorite group you’ve got a new subscriber! And as of 1:11 am Pacific time you just hit 1 K!

Welcome to the #Voiceplay family!! You're in for quite a ride!! Voiceplay has been around for 26 years now and the rabbit hole is quite deep and wide at the same time. You'll love the creativity as Voiceplay ads the theater (obviously) to the perfect vocals every time. There are four full time members and then they will have a feature artist for the fifth. The full time are Layne Stein on vocal percussion and baritone, Geoff Castellucci (bass but 5 octave range), Eli (pronounced EL E -- not E Lie) (the bald one) on the high rock god tenor 1 parts, and Cesar De La Rosa (baritone and high tenor from time to time). The 5th will be a feature artist. You'll see J. None as the feature on many of their releases (not this one) as he was a full time VP member and joined the Navy during Covid and sings for them. He features on Voiceplay releases as he can fit it into his schedule. My recommendations....Voiceplay versions of Nothing Else Matter, Valhalla Calling, Creep, Hoist the Colours, Hellfire, Seven Nation Army, Hall of the Mountain King, Warriors, Dream On, 21 Pilots Mashup, If I were a Rich Man / Girl. This just gets you started. Get through these and their new releases and we'll give you dozens more. Enjoy the ride!

Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole. 🤪
They are by far my favorite acapella group. And they are very reactor friendly, since they do not belong to a music label. They handle the majority of the production, mixing, and arranging in house. And the bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, actually has his own solo channel on CZcams. His solo content isn't acapella though, but still worth checking out.

One thing: never skip the ending credits. There are sometimes little outros or extra scenes, often a piece of the karaoke version of the song or a whole other remixed version of the song. These guys are genius, creative and soooooo goofy.

Voiceplay are amazing. Layne beatboxer and Geoff bass have been in the band since high school. They have had some member changes. The newest member is Cesar guy you loved his voice angel in disguise, then you have eli who is a rock god.
They where a five piece but now a 4 piece, one of the old members j none left for the navy but comes back and sings with them.
Anything you chose from them is a big hit.
They are independent and all done in house. Usually Geoff or Layne will arrange, Eli has done a few, he does the lighting and the unreal backdrops when they use computer based ones.
Geoff also has his own channel

  • @ronsbrat525
    @ronsbrat525 Před 5 měsíci +3

    Left to right....
Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements.
Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor.
    Alexa- guest (feature).
Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements.
Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci - bass, arrangements.
At present it's just the four guys. Alexa was a guest living and filmed in South Korea at this time. They collaborate with various artists for the 5th spot. So depending on the video and time is who is in it.
Their latest video is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". But they have so many more fantastic videos going back 8+ years.
They are independent and everything themselves except intricate make-up, camera, and audio mixing. They also do any genre of music. Broadway, country, pop, rock, gaming, classic, rap, Viking, Disney, sea shanty, Christmas, Halloween and the list goes on.
They are known as both The Theater Kids of Acapella and The Kings of Halloween because of their love of dressing up and performing.
They are from Orlando Florida and all have performed at Universal Studios Orlando, Disney World or both. They still sing at Disney from time to time.
Geoff Castellucci, the bass has his own channel where he sings solo with instruments. He clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Each with their own name and personality.... Jeff, Jeoph, Goff and Daryl.
The first 3 got their names in his video "Way Down" when he portrayed 4 janitors as a kinda dis on the way some people misspelled or mispronounced his name. And it stuck with the fans.
Daryl got his name when he did "Ghost Riders In The Sky" and needed a 4th name. He said he liked that name so Daryl it is.
The only time he changed the names was when he did 2 of the Hobbit movies songs, "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" and "I See Fire". He portrayed 4 of the dwarves from the movies.
All of his videos are amazing as well. His latest was "Blue Christmas".
His wife Kathy is the Production Manager for both him and Voiceplay. And sometimes cameos in both of their videos.
Both of them released their new videos for February on their Patreons Wednesday. So they should be coming to CZcams in a week or two.
Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole 🐰

I am going to recommend you watch the videos all the way through. You never know when Voiceplay adds a fake ending or bonus material at the end.
Looks like you've been given a brief introduction of the guys and what to kinda expect. So my recommendations are:
    Queen in 5 Minutes
Hellfire (from Hunchback of Notre Dame)
    My Mother Told Me
Valhalla Calling (kind of a sequel to My Mother Told Me)
    Hoist the Colours
    Drunken Sailor
    Golden Hour
Friends On the Other Side (from Princess and the Frog)
    Nothing Else Matters (Metallica song)
    Warriors
    Carry On
    7 Nation Army
    Creep
Don't firget to check out Geoff's (Jeff) Solo Channel
Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold (from the first Hobbit movie)
I See Fire (from the second Hobbit movies)
    Ghost Riders in the Sky
    Folsom Prison
    Sound of Silence
    16 Tons
    Big Bad John
    Way Down
    Country Roads
This should get you started 😊

“That guy” (the one with the white on his nose) has a big chunk of their cover of Radiohead’s Creep.
I’d also recommend their covers of Nothing Else Matters (yes, the Metallica song), Aerosmith’s Dream On, Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight and White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army. And their cover of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” is a must.
If you’ve watched the Disney movie “Hunchback of Notre Dame”, look at their cover of Hellfire. If you liked the Pirates of the Caribbean, then they covered Hoist The Colors from that series. If you’re a gamer, they did the Halo theme and Dragonborn from Skyrim. (And have another gaming related song dropping soon)
VoicePlay puts out a new video every month. They can keep you in business.
Can’t tell you anything about the chick other than she was a guest and is famous in Asia. 🤷‍♀️

Welcome to Voiceplay! Left to right, Layne Stein (beatboxer, sometimes treats us by singing or doing other wonderful things), Cesar de la Rosa (new baritone-just hit a D-frickin’-6 in The Lion Sleeps tonight, so yeah, wow), AleXa (K-pop singer, agree she has an amazing voice, but I don’t know a lot about her music), Eli Jacobson (the team’s rock god and lighting guy, plus an amazing actor), and Geoff Castellucci, the bass and sometimes arranger for Voiceplay’s music. He also has his own channel.
You’re in for a real treat exploring these guys’ music. They will do full productions in costume like this (sometimes there are sets, too), then do shorts where they’re just singing in the mall. There is not a bad song in their catalogue, so just have fun. They just dropped The Lion Sleeps Tonight, which was supposed to be one of their shorts, but it was just so good they kept going.
Great reaction-I don’t often subscribe the first time I see a reaction, so good on you-can’t wait for more. And now that you’re exploring acapella you’ll find lots of other rabbit holes to explore. The Bass Gang just dropped a cover of If I Had a Heart from the show Vikings. Home Free is great, so is Pentatonix, lots to love!

Left to right: Layne Stein, vocal percussion, Cesar de la Rosa, Alexa (guest who approached the guys to do this and was recorded and filmed in South Korea on a green screen and added later) Eli (short for Eliezer) Jacobson, and Geoff Castellucci, the bass. However all the guys have a good range, though not as wide as Geoff who can cover five octaves. Layne and Geoff have been friends and singing to gether since middle school and they do most of the arrangements for the group and they cover just about any genre, unlike many acapella groups. Plenty more info already given so I won't repeat it.

Their genre range is incredibly broad. If you choose your genre, you can select any song from there - VP never disappoints. My favourite genre from them is rock ("Nothing Else Matters" (Metallica), "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins), "Dream On" (Aerosmith), "Seven Nation Army" (White Stripes), "Creep" (Radiohead) etc. etc. They are also knows at the a capella kings of Halloween. I think they are the oldest of the a capella groups - even though they have gone through some personnel. They do their own arrangements, videos etc. (they are fully independent). Have fun 🌹- this ride is worth taking!

I am all about VoicePlay and Home Free a cappella groups. 'Long-time pros, massive skills not just vocally but in arrangements, theatrics, creativity. Sorry, the girl is just a featured guest. VP often has a guest when one guy is doing a Navy hitch (singing!). You'll soon want to check out the bass guy's solo channel for more excellent videos: Geoff Castellucci. PS First time here. If you do Home Free, they do shamelessly goofy comedy, but also sincere "message" songs (feminist, anti-war, etc). 'Very brave for country boys.

"I don't know how long they have been singing together."
Geoff (bass, far right) and Layne (beatboxer, far left) are founding members of the group, like late 1990s, so they have been performing together for a long while now.
Eli (read as L-E, Tenor and just left of Geoff) came later but has been with the group for a long time, sorry I don't know the exact time frame.
Cesar (Baritone, right of Layne) is the newest member, only being part of the grpup for a few years. His first song with them is "We're Good" and he was already vibing with them really well even then.
AleXa is the feature and she reached put to VP with the idea of performing together. She is a K-Pop singer and all of her parts, even the video, were done in Korea and video editing magic let her be in the shot with them.

The most amazing thing about this one was that Alexa wasn't even with them for the recording or filming. She approached VoicePlay from where she works in South Koirea as a Kpop artist to do this so recorded and filmed herself there on a green screen, then sent her stuff to Voiceplay to incorporate it into their video. Their editing is always seamless and you'd never know. Whatever genre you're into ViocePlay will have done something in it, from Disney to rock, and done it spendidly. Geoff, the bass, and Layne, the beatboxer, have been singing together since middle school, and that's a lot of years as they are both now in their early 40s. The others were added along the way as early members left to do other things.

Cesar de La Rose - Baritone
    AleXa (k-pop artist)
Eli (pronounced Ellie) Jacobson - tenor
Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci- Bass (5+ octave range)
AleXa is a K-pop artist and winner of America Song Contest 2022 (raised in Oklahoma and a US citizen). AleXa's part was filmed in South Korea where she was when the video was being created.
Almost anything in Voiceplay you will probably like to be honest it is hard to pick one you like more than others.
If you decide to watch some of AleXa's songs i would recommend (in this order to watch) "Bomb" "Do or Die" and "Revolution" they have a linked story through the music videos... if you just want a sample of AleXa then go try her latest song Wonderland (i would recommend the "Official Performance Video" version version of this song

Other commenters have mentioned many of their must-see masterpieces, but they've got a new one in the pipeline you'll definitely want to catch when it comes out. I'm also not sure whether anyone has mentioned that they have an extensive collection of shorter and longer 'minis' including (among many others) Remember Me and The Wellermen that will knock your socks off. I love watching 1st time Voiceplay reactions! This was fantastic and you caught a lot of the great moments. The members are from the left Layne Stein (lane stine) beatboxer extraordinaire, Cesar De La Rosa haunting bari-tenor, Eli Jacobson (Elly, rhymes with Jelly) rock god, and Geoff Castellucci (Jeff Cast-a-loo-chee) super bass. Geoff has his own individual channel as well as doing almost 50% of oViceplays arrangements. For Geoff's individual work I recommend his cover of Man of Constant Sorry, Aint No Sunshine, Jack's Lament from The Nightmare Before Christmas, and High & Dry by Radiohead. Geoff uses a technique called subharmonics so while he does clean up the recording and use EQ to remove excess air on his low notes he IS actually hitting those crazy lows. Can't wait to see more of both Voiceplay & Geoff on your channel! Subscribed in anticipation.

And please consider adding The Bass Gang to that mix of a cappella groups. They are made up of four base singers who met via the Internet during Covid. They each record at their home studios because they are spread out all over the world two in the US one in Egypt and one in the Czech Republic. they often collaborate with other singers including Jonathan Young and Foust of Home Free. They are very new and because of the fact that they’re recording from all over their videos aren’t terribly elaborate but they have gotten better now that they’re used to doing it that way. They take turns arranging so you get a wide variety of not only content but style.
