  • Vintage Story Desert Life is a desert-themed survival playthough in version 1.19, with a large list of mods to speed up the process of building and chiseling. While our builds will all (or at least mostly) be in the desert, we are not restricted to hot and arid climates for the purposes of gathering materials and resources.
This series exists as a series of VODs, as well, but for people who prefer their videos in a more manageable length, the VODs will be cut into these shorter episodes and released throughout the week after each livestream, provided that there is enough desire for this format.
Want to play along? You'll need the world files and all of these mods (likely) in order for it to work. Download links below.

Lol my suggestion was used... the trimming back of the gardens stairs... ive fallen in absolute love with the VS chiseling system as it allows for very tiny and out of the way steps that dont stop you from easily walking around. So much better than MC where everything is hella tricky to tuck away as everythig is bulky. Like my smithing area, its attached to my house outside connected to the kitchens chimney. Backing my forges into the same chimney system for esthetics sake. Its about a 6x7 area with upside down stairs around the walls acting as ingot/mold tables, however because of this i didnt want the walls to be huge and bulky thus making my forge area look bulky and blocky. So i made a bunch of single voxel thick "walls" to keep the forging area look thin and yet still allow for mold racks and lanterns to attach to the "walls". It looks fantastic because of all the depth compared to the fence posts holding up the stick mat awning.
So i thought why not trim back stairs to as small as possible while still allowing you to walk up without jumping. Its made so many areas feel far less cramped as the steps are small little "bricks" sticking out to step up on.

I love the way you add to your build piece by piece. And every time it gets better.
Somehow I lack this ability. But I can't grasp it. There's something wrong with my 3d imagination, I know that for a long time. That's not my strong suit. But there's something else. I can feel things, very vividly, and I can describe them verbally. But I don't see them in my mind as a picture. And I can't paint what I can't see.
It's strange to have a disability like that as a creative.
Sometimes I can overcome this, and it really shows. But I never found out why. Watching and learning helps, and I always admire people like you who can do so easily what I lack.
But one can always hope. One day the knot will disappear and I will build the most dreamlike building, just like I dreamed it - without ever really seeing it.
And I like the collective mind the chat provides. It gives you ideas. Balls to juggle.
It's like a hive mind. Many people are afraid of that, but I like it. What else is a brain storming? Let go und juggle with collective balls. I love that, it creates the best ideas.
Where am I today? My brain is astray.

Thank you! I'm enjoying letting this build grow and evolve organically, with new additions and changes as I realize something is missing or could be better. Visualizing designs in 3D space isn't something everyone has--my wife admittedly can't do any of that, but she's creative in other aspects!

@@Kurazarrh Maybe it's a female thing. But I doubt that. If the circumstances are right and I try painting or building, I can sometimes almost feel that wall. And I want to demolish it, but this does not work. 🤣
I can go around it to a certain point. But it's not what I imagine, there's always a layer I cannot grasp.
And when I'm stressed and too normal I'm so far away from that. All that is left is a learned routine.
But it's building up over time. I'm getting better, expanding my abilities. Watching other creative people is so helpful. It works almost imperceptible, but everytime you do something, you can see improvements.
And I will try another job. Maybe with less pressure there is a miracle waiting. 🤣 If not, there's always something else. Being creative is always worth it, no matter how imperfect. I always try to remember this. It does'nt always work, but I'm still working on it. 🤣

Shingles would probably be a bit more thematic for a forge than wood... just a thought.

As far as I know, unless you have a mod that changes it, any lantern works in the backpack slot. That is if you are using the Necessaries mod.

Ah, I didn't know the Necessaries mod had that! It's been a while since I looked at that mod. But we're using A Wearable Light, which looks like it's brass or bust!

Fyi you should be able tonget away with "Stick Layers" as a roof for the forge area. While it visually lets rain drops through it does prevent torches and campfires/forges from being extinguished. So it SHOULD also protect from the new water on hot forging/molds causing damage or what ever. They also let light through so they look amazing as an outside awning/pergola roof just without the cross-hatching.

The stick layers are all right, but they look a little too stone-age for what I've got going here. But they do make for great early-game porch coverings!
