Hello Guys! Welcome and in this video, We'll talk about how we applied for a Spanish retirement visa (the Non-Lucrative Visa) at the Spanish Consulate in Los Angeles and how it went. You'll also get step-by-step instructions on how to obtain this residency permit, including documentation, prerequisites, and the legal process.
Spain’s non-lucrative visa is one of the most popular residency choices for persons wishing to live or retire in. This will be your greatest option if you plan to go to Spain and not work there, or if you plan to retire there.
The non-lucrative residence residency is one of the various types of Spanish visas available to non-EU people with sufficient financial resources to remain in the country without working. This is also true for the applicant's relatives since you are welcome to bring your family along.
After entering Spanish territory, this permit will allow you to stay for a year. One of its most notable features is that it prevents you from engaging in any form of economic or professional activity in Spain. To put it another way, you are not permitted to work for any corporation functioning in the country. It is a non-profit organization.

Spaniard here. Foreigners complain Spanish bureaucracy is a nightmare but that is because you might be doing something wrong and expecting the Civil Servant to do it for you. So let me give you a tip. A cultural one. We are blunt, straight forward and direct people (not to be misunderstood as unpolite). We do our job diligently but we don't like people waisting our time. So, read the instructions and follow procedure. I'll say again: read the instructions and follow procedure. Don't over/under do. Just do.
Hi! Thanks for watching! Honestly that’s our observation, too. We think Spain is immigration friendly, very welcoming to us foreigners. We read so much about how complicated applying for the NLV was, but in reality we find Spain’s instructions to be clear and concise. We didn’t need a lawyer as compared to when we were navigating the US immigration system. No complaints from us here!
What we found out was that bureaucracy is the same whether in the US, Philippines, or Spain, you just have to read all the instructions carefully, double check your documents, and you should be fine. ☺️

Yes, we are welcoming, even more so if you come from anywhere with cultural ties like the Old Spanish Empire. You might unofficially call it "the Spanish Commonwealth". The Philippines is a distant but dear memory to us.

Great video! We have our appointment at the end of January, had to postpone it twice as the Apostilles are taking longer. Appointments are hard to get, they open up at 1pm PST but noticed sometimes they don’t open up. We had luck on Sundays. Go figure. Looking forward to your process once you get to Spain due to the padrón process and TIE kind of complicated and bureaucratic but step by the step! I felt very identified with you (the wife) I am doing all the paperwork 😊
Hola Paola, yes I did all the paperwork for the visa, and Paul had to do the paperwork to bring our dog over, so I think it almost evens it out haha. Congratulations on getting the appointment, we know it was very hard to find. We just arrived in Valencia and we’ll be seeing apartments tomorrow and hopefully open a bank account. It’s been by appointment only at BBVA due to covid. Once we get those squared away we’ll have more videos! Hoping to make one about our last days in the US and the trip itself soon! -Bea

So you indicated that the application had to be submitted no more than 90 days in advance of your intended travel date. Two questions: 1) Is this indicated somewhere on the LA website and 2) Is there a specific field on the application form where you indicate the date you want the visa to start? We are actually going to go through the SF Consulate, but understand that SF's requirements are the same as LA's. Thanks for the great detailed information!
Thanks for watching! 1. The website changed since we applied so I don’t know if it’s still stated on there. 2. Yes in the visa application form you will indicate intended date of arrival in Spain.
Congrats on this great channel. Hoping for your continued success. You mentioned that applicants cannot work, even remotely. What about those who can manage their businesses from a remote location but are interested in applying for non lucrative visa? Spain is still expected to launch its digital nomad visa by January 2023. Expecting more content from you guys!
No remote work was part of LA consulate requirements when we applied, and more recently I’ve seen them rename the NLV to a non-working visa on the websites. In our case we mentioned we have a business run by our partners so our income is passive. Yes the DN visa is in the works, which I think a lot of people can fall under. Probably why they renamed the NLV to Non-Working Residency visa.

Thanks for video. Just to be clear. You cant work anywhere? Or just in spain. My husband works in russia and travels home on weekends. We want to move to spain. So is he not meant to work in russia? Also do they keep passport?
From my understanding , since it’s Non-Lucrative this visa is meant for retirees with a pension or savings. You will have to show proof of funds, if the proof is a paystub then I do not think they will approve it.
The LA consulate expressly told me “you cannot work, not even remotely”. Spain doesn’t have a digital nomad (remote work) visa yet so some people say it’s a gray area.
They kept our passports during our application and we picked them up with the visas attached after 2 weeks.

Yes, they specifically asked for mortgage during the interview and it’s also stated on their website:
11. Copy of most recent Tax Return. Residency applicants cannot have/leave loans or mortgages in the United States when applying for residency in spain.
You will also need to show your source of funds and a detailed account of how you’ll be getting money while not working. ☺️

You need to be monetized to have income. We don’t have that yet. We had the CZcams channel before we applied for the visa so if ever we get the monetization, it should be considered as passive.

I was born in the PI but a US citizen. I'm wondering if it is very difficult to gather all the documents and were did you have the documents apostilled? Hi! More than the culture, I think we picked up the Spanish language faster because we speak Tagalog. We got our background checks from CA DOJ, and then dropped them of for Apostille at the Secretary of State. We got them back in 2 days. I got NLV stamped in the passport without appointment.
We just found out tonight that we need our FBI check Apostilled in DC not in our state? We thought we were ready to send it off. How long didi it take for your Check to be done and was it done in DC or in your home state.
We didn’t do FBI, LA consulate allowed state bg checks at that time so that’s what we did. State of CA bg took about a week of back and forth and then Apostille took 2 days from drop off to getting it mailed back to us. I think we talk about this more in detail in our other video. going back to this video, 2 questions if I may: why did the L.A. consulate seperate your interviews half hour apart or so, if applying as a married couple, and secondly can you re-explain the moment about this missing staple during the Apostille paperwork moment, the staple was or was not in right spot, further, could this little thing have been a moment of entire rejection for 1 party being interviewed separately at that moment? so one person might have been approved a visa but another maybe denied, over a staple?
There was another couple who had time slots between us so the lady chose to separate us. Google Image search “Apostille Secretary of State California “ and you’ll see exactly how they staple and stamp it. Removing the staple will invalidate the Apostille. Yes you can be denied over it because the Apostille will be invalid thus your documents are now incomplete.

One more question please. How do you access your money from the USA in Spain? and once you open a bank account is Spain, is it easy to transfer your funds in your USA bank to the bank in Spain?

Hello, I was randomly checking around midnight. They had just opened back up in person appointments, before that their office was closed due to covid.
Unfortunately they won’t answer emails or calls just for appointments. You may need to sit down for a few days and try at all hours to get online.
And I do not recommend paying, that will just encourage the scalpers.

Yes you can! According to www.myspanishresidency.com “There are no restrictions on buying property in Spain, whether it's commercial, residential or land. In fact, Spain encourages investment by foreigners, both resident and non-resident. Remember that if you buy a house worth more than €500.000 you can apply for a Golden Visa.”

Very informative content. How did you plan for the proof of stay or address in Spain. Is that required at the time of interview or after grant of permit to PR.
Glad to hear that 🙏🏼 edited to correct whatI previously wrote. The LA consulate did not ask us where exactly we were staying. We just wrote Valencia Spain and that was enough.

@@simonpeter9617 We didn’t have an address or an airbnb at the time of application so I just put Valencia, Spain.
Can you get a non-lucrative visa with a Canadian passport and then later on apply for Spanish citizenship using a Latin-American passport after living there continuously for 2 years?
I recommend applying with your Latam passport from the beginning if the consulate allows you, the visa fee for Canadians are more expensive. But yes I have heard of other people applying with a different passport for the citizenship. Join Facebook groups and you’ll find these people with similar situations. Good luck!
How about the Tax as a resident in Spain do you have idea about it and How does it work for non lucrative visa?
Hi! Haven’t looked into it, we just joined a few Facebook groups on Taxes to get a feel of it and will hiring a professional. Since we have our business here in CA we are used to paying higher taxes as opposed to being employed.

@@juandeaza7360 i think the Foreign ID number is what they assign to you, so keep that blank. You can always fill it by hand at the consulate if they advice you to.
keep in mind they have changed the websites on ALL consulates after we’ve applied, so take our advice with a grain of salt. Fun times! I recommend emailing the problem to your consulate so they can advice you. Good luck!

Question about the proof of funds: I believe that one of you was the main applicant, and the second one was an additional family member, is that right?, if yes, is it ok to show proof of funds for both (husband and wife) or should it be only funds from the account of the main applicant?
Yes, Paul was the main applicant, I was his dependent. Since we were interviewed at different times and I was interviewed first, we both showed the joint bank accounts with official stamps and translations in our packets just in case. My name was in the bank statement.
I think the more money you show the better chances of approval, doesn’t have to be solely the main applicant’s bank account.

My wife have the exact required funds in her savings accounts, I do have more than enough money in my business account but we were advised to not show business account and not to transfer a big lumpsum from business to personal in the last minute. Do you have any thoughts on that? did you have to present your business bank statements?.
@@walidadas6968 Yay, thanks for subscribing! :) We were advised to show around $5000 more than the required in our savings account. We showed both our savings account and our business account because the business account was in Paul's name with a DBA so it showed him as the sole owner. We wanted to remove any doubts that we can afford to be on a sabbatical at our age.
We didn't think it mattered though, because our personal savings alone was enough for us both, so even if they don't count the business account we were good.
This is all based on our experience with the LA consulate, so each consulate may have a different view of things.

Did you have to show bank statements for the last 6 months or just an official letter from the bank showing the total balance from savings and business account?.
@@walidadas6968 We showed 3 months bank statements and a 1-page letter from each bank stating the total balances and official stamp. We had that 1-page letter translated.
Is it a requirement to bring a letter of intent? I did no see that in the LA consulate checklist.

We added a letter of intent in Spanish because we wanted to better explain our move. We knew they would question our decision because of our age. It is not listed but she did ask for it specifically during our appointment.

Hello! It should be done in the country of residence. For example, we have Filipino nationality but were California residents so we applied at the Los Angeles Consulate. We didn’t go back to the Philippines to apply.
