This scene perfectly showcases how much Fletcher essentially stripped Neiman of his humanity and how chasing your dreams to the extreme can cause you to lose sight. On one hand, you can understand where Neiman is coming from, because if you’re not gonna be with her most of the time, might as well call it quits. But on the other hand, he isn’t doing this for the reason he’s stating, he’s breaking up with her because he’s desperate, at that point insane and is willing to lose all just to be the best, and in a way, even win the approval of a sorry excuse for a human being in Fletcher. Not helped out that he insulted her, told her that she has no ambition, and that his professional life is more important than his personal life. Man this movie is so good, and yet makes me very very very sad.
It’s sad to that he wouldn’t even give her the time of day. Even when he’s great, he still wouldn’t acknowledge her. Even when passing her on the street. It’s very sad, yet powerful all the same.

What’s sad is she actually was probably the one my thing that stopped him from plummeting to madness. He didn’t let any one else’s opinion shape or influence him, except his music teacher who is of course crazy. His quest for greatness was so obsessive he was willing to lose himself for it. When he got into the car accident and still only cared about making it on time, you knew it was ruining him.

This part always caught me because, as someone in the music world, it becomes evident that for many folks, chasing those lofty goals of being “one” of the greats is only going to result in trying to find happiness in being constantly compared and scrutinized. Maybe by some miracle you’ll reach that untouchable, godly status of the true “greats” (usually once you’re dead and gone), but odds are you’ll just be one of many talented musicians who are only as valuable as their hands are intact.
Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s been my experience anyhow.

This scene always makes me cringe. Fletcher corrupted his mind and turned him into a completely selfish prick. That’s why he went about this the way he did. He basically said to her: “It’s all about me and I don’t care about you and you’re not important”.

Fletcher was evil, maybe even turned him into a machine as shown in the end of Whiplash. But he wanted to be one of the greats, so he set his mind to something and improved.

@@wlliamson53 I'm not condoning Andrew's behaviour in this scene, but if one truly yearns and aches to be one of the greats, it's not a "career", but an obsession. It has to become an obsession. That's why there would never be an scenario where the girl would've supported his "career" because it never was one. He already assumed she wouldn't motivate his obsession because the word itself has a negative connotation to it. That's why many of the greats at any craft, remain single until they somewhat reached their goals or position. Because while on their pathway to it, it's about him/her and what they desire.

People forget the point of the breakup is to show that Fletcher changed Nieman into someone lonely, antisocial, and emotionless. Too much ambition can be self destructive. You see it all over history and in books, too.

Yet you still know who Nikola Tesla is and you're still using devices based on his work. He changed the world. Where would we be if he had decided getting his dick wet was more important? Its a bigger picture thing not everyone gets it. True greatness is worth more than a piece of ass or 2.5 kids and a minivan. He was being real.
I used to admire Andrew's position in this scene for his dedication to his drumming, but I now realize how much value there was in the relationships he had but alienated himself from. Even if he became one of the greats, he would have ended up all alone with no one who cared about him, except for his dad. If you become one of the greats but everyone despises you and you're all alone, I think that would suck.
think about that when you actually become great, that would be an experience, wouldn't it?
You fail to understand once you become the greatest you have women throwing themselves at you, you would be far from alone, people would respect you to a degree that you can build deeper more meaningful relationships with other people who are in the same mindset as you, Andrews goals here are far different from popcorn girl so it would of had a hard time working out.

Ive been there, I ended things with my last partner because she was gaslighting, trying to manipulate me , treating me badly all over on the psychological spectrum and in the end she made advances to another guy(something that slipped her tongue). I immediately ended things as soon as I pieced together everything and I was sure about her intentions towards me, she began playing the victim, then verbally attacked me and then again played the victim. She has reached out after a few months from the breakup once through her personal account , and got blocked, and a second time through one of her friends accounts and got blocked again. Learn to stand up your ground towards people if you are in the right. Doesnt matter how you feel, if the facts are different , get rid of the garbage as soon as possible.

The Tragedy Of Life that's the problem. People are too emotional.
This immediately came back to bite him later on when he called her again and found out she had a new boyfriend. He sacrificed literally everything in his personal life for music. So he became one of the greats at the cost of literally everything and Fletcher will always feel like he won, cause even though Neiman had the last laugh in a way, Fletcher still found his “Charlie Parker”. Whiplash is one of those “the bad guy wins” movies, and although it might be great cinematically speaking, the morality that it showcases is really bone-chilling.
But he wanted to be one of the greats, he still has time to pursue everything else. It's not like he died doing this, this made his life.
Exactly what I was thinking. He was so immature when he made this decision. I say this because I was in the exact spot and made the same decision in my immature days like him by sacrificing everything. I wish I could go back in time and slap me in the fact that it wasn't worth it. I still have a narrow window of opportunity to rebound back from my current state but I wish I had this realization earlier.

@@TheWelchProductions I think in order to be a great artist you have to experience life, breaking up with a potential love is a bad idea, if you want perfect timing and to hit all the notes just right you can program a computer to do that every time and be boring as hell, give me slight imperfections give me passion and feeling over that any day when it comes to music, don't get me wrong he may not have much time for her and he needs to hone his craft but he also can't lose sight of passion, if he does he may as well be a computer. Like most things in life it is about balance.

He'll be remembered by every future soul who has an interest in drumming and wants to explore its history. He'll be remembered by the hundreds, if not thousands of people who were entranced by his recitals and who will remember them till the day they die. He'll be remembered as one of the best drummers of his time, if not the best, and nothing can ever take those achievements away from him.
Meanwhile that girl he just broke up with will probably stay working at the cinema for a few years before she finishes her generic degree and marries her new boyfriend. Then she'll have a hard time getting a new job and having kids but hey, she's a strong girl and pulls off both... she's a great suburban mom and she even becomes among the top 20% earners in her generic firm with her generic career. And even though her husband is slowly becoming a alcoholic loser she pushes through for her kids so they know what its like to have a dad growing up. And even when they divorce and her kids hate her she finds a new man and marries again, while working hard to keep her kids' love. She's become among the top 2% earners in her generic firm of her generic career now, but she starts to notice her hair greying and her body succumbing against the beginning of the end. She wants to start giving back to her community so she becomes a key figure within it, even appearing in a few newspapers. Fast forward a few years and she's 70, her kids grew up and she's had a pretty happy and fulfilled life. But she won't be remembered like Andrew was, and will remain another one of the billions of souls who passed through life without really understanding how to L.I.V.E.
And this is pretty much her BEST case scenario...
The dinner table scene pretty much highlights this.
@Abeede Ahmed Uh no I did not get the impression he would be remembered at all. Do you realize how many musicians like him exist? How many went through school, got a few gigs, played really well, but couldn't make a career out of it, and faded away into obscurity within a few years. With an OD around the corner. And he'll be replaced immediately by the thousands of equally capable drummers waiting to get their shot, as he was.
Andrew gave up everything for nothing. The end of the movie isn't supposed to be triumph and it definitely doesn't convey a semblance of "wow, look at him, a music legend. he'll surely go down in history. this is his big break"
To me it's clear that he's just dependant on validation. He didn't feel important in the relationship, the only place he feels of value or of worth, and talent, and attention, is when he's playing drums, because he's good. But again, so are thousands if not millions of others, and every 6 months that passes a next generation is getting just as good as the last. But he put all his eggs in one basket, and like so many others in real life who do that, it leaves them with nothing when they burn out. This is why his death of an OD in a decade or less is pretty much destined.
Andrew was a validation starved young male, which is common, fell victim to abuse of a man he saw as role model worthy, took the abuse for the 15 seconds of fame it afforded him, alienating everyone else he used to care about and everyone who could actually help him and provide healthy loving relationships, and when that 15 seconds runs out, he's fxcked.
He was not at all set up to be the next Mozart lmao. You're delusional if you think that's what the movie was about. This isn't rudy or hoosiers.
Andrew was impressionable and he was manipulated easily. Fletcher used Andrew like a tool, to further HIS career. He's the one who's going to be okay, Andrew is the one who, when the dilutions of grandeur have disappeared, he'll realize he's got nothing left and he was just used as a doormat.
This breakup solidifes him as more emotionally dependant on fletcher than his own girlfriend, and if you think that's commendable or impressive, then you might wanna analyze all your relationships over again. It doesn't even matter if they loved each other, but investing in a relationship, any relationship, is how you truly find out what you want in life. He could've steered in a better direction, and ended up with a girl he loved. But this break up only goes to show that he'll never even get the chance. Unless he does a 180 after the movie ends, but assuming a character will fix all their mistakes they made throughout the movie only AFTER the credits have already rolled, even if for the sake of optimism, js just called fanfiction lol.
As for her, sounds like you're speaking from experience, in an unsolicited gross amount of detail there buddy... Projection isn't very insightful. She's at a point where she could literally do anything in life. She's in college, she's into acting, and she's young and ambitious. She could literally end up anywhere doing anything, so why even speculate? She's not the focus of the movie, she's just a person living her own life, passing through our protagonists life briefly, as a beacon of normalcy and a glimpse of a social life outside of band class, before getting pushed out and left to continue further onto her own journey. She seemed to see through a lot of the obvious emotional baggage Andrew has, so given her displayed level of emotional intelligence, I think we can assume she'll be just alright. Unfortunately the same can't be said for Andrew, as he just barrels deeper and deeper down a dark path.

I agree and I actually think this is foreshadowed in their first date together. She casually mentions that he has a problem with eye contact, he agrees and says that his father says the same thing--and then she immediately starts making it about herself, talking about how much she and her mother hate each other. So this is a bit of a pattern with her. Whether she's aware she's doing it is another question that the film doesn't get around to addressing.
Oh well, I don't recall her trying to make anything about herself.

Man this movie was written absolutely brilliant. This scene is a pretty good example for how to write well. This scene is deep while not being edgy and can be interpreted from different persons differently and yet they can still all be right. For One you have the dude. He is being straight forward and honest (which a lot of people can't handle). For him the relationship or a relationship in general is not that important. It is not the most important thing in the world. For him the number one priority is achieving greatness. He wants to be one of the best. That does take a lot of sacrefices. Not everyone is up for that or can even understand that (she is one of those persons). He went ahead and thought about the future and what that will bring them. He knows himself and has thought logically (and almost without emotion) about what is going to happen. He has his goal and wants to get there. For that it will take most of his time and the time he does have and will somewhat spent with her will still have the drums in the back of his mind. For that she will not get the emotional support and the couple lifestyle she wants and deserves. That will reult in stress, conflict and the end hate. It is not that he is emotionless but more that he loves his music and goals way more than her (which some may say as cruel or straight up dumb and a mistake but it really isn't). Therefore he breaks it off and is as straight forward and honest as humanly possible. She on the other hand doesn't share his mindset (which os absolutely fine as well). She doen't strive for greatness. She strives for a fullfilled and happy life. The defintion of that varies from person to person. For him it is greatness. For her it is a stable life with a good job and a loving relationship. She wants to overcome their hurdles together and continue to be by his side. She is a very emotional individual and wants to live her life that way. Therefore however she doesn't see the struggle and the things that are coming towards them. She will not get the emotional support and closeness she needs from him. That is why she will devlop a major dislike for him and it will result in exactly as he explained it to her. She isn't number one and she deserves to be number one. She doesn't understand how someone can want such a alienated goal and put that above love, relationship and closeness. She recents him for being somewhat like a machine and almost sees him like a sociopath. She is right on him treating her like shit and she can't fathom on how he could be to her like that (on which she is absolutely right). In the end both sides are right and wrong at the same time. They do not work well together, both deserve something else and no matter how you see and twist it objectively you can blame both parties as either the victim or the bad guy. Absolutely well written.

A beautifully written and performed scene. Really captures mismanaged ambition. The honesty you can respect to a fault only because it spares the girl pain down the road. But I don’t think his actions are meant to be looked at as admirable. His ambitions have devolved from noble and innocent to vain and self-destructive. And because of that he’s content with erecting walls and cutting himself off from the things and people that ought to matter the most. It’s really a selfish act when you consider he never gave his girlfriend a chance to be supportive. It’s the beginning of tragedy.
Subtle detail I love is how different Nicole looks here compared to when Andrew first met her. She's in business wear, well dressed, nice earrings; like she's clearly grown up quite a bit from the "girl behind the counter who doesn't know what she wants" that we were first introduced to. But that's all Andrew will ever see her as (based on a single sentence where she said she hadn't picked a major yet btw) and he makes that painfully apparent with how he breaks up with her.
He's admitting, to her face, exactly how *little* he thinks of her; it's heartbreaking. Nicole gets her first honest look at the person she is dating and all she can rightfully say is "what the fuck is wrong with you???" And while Fletcher holds his share of blame, the truth is Andrew already was this person longgg before Fletcher got his hands on him (just look at the dinner party scene). Fletcher just enabled and exploited the obsessive and toxic aspects of Andrew that were already there.

I think I actually enjoy Miles Teller's acting just as much as JK Simmons's, despite that being a hell of a difficult act to follow. The way he lays it out to her is quite nervous, and with a bit of a stronger tone, a more rushed delivery than what would feel natural. It perfectly tells the story of a kid who is socially timid but strongly determined, with an obsession and a level of stress that comes with it that he can't quite handle.

Although different circumstances, this is how my ex broke up with me a little over a week ago. I know exactly how this girl feels. I didn't and still don't understand how anyone can be so sure that what he's saying is really going to happen. You can't know the future for sure and predicting that such a thing would happen anyway is on him, not her. She might not know what she wants in her life, but she was sure of him. She probably wanted to be a source of support for him and him saying that she'd be a hindrance instead hurt her more than anything.

I ended up getting hurt and losing my time. Vowed never to get through this again. Better to be alone and successful in what you want ( or at least reach as close as to what you perceive as success) than losing your time with someone who may leave you or be tricking you the whole time.
Ambition is not dangerous being happy comfortable and jolly doesn’t get the human race forward in any way shape or form. movie isnt about accurate description of jazz either, people in this comment section loved to critique it like it was the main point. it was about dreams and greatness, it was about something more than living your life in mediocricy, actually pushing to your absolute potential and seeing what you are made of, which is incredible.
I find hilarious that there's a bunch of people applauding him for doing this, yet: 1) they clearly misunderstand not only this scene, but the themes of this movie, as others have pointed out, and; 2) later in the movie he reaches back to her, possibly to try to get back together, but alas, she's moved on.
you do know that you can look at the scene for, wait for it, what it IS outside of the context of the movie, right? For many, this is a good example of a quick and painless breakup scene done by good actors that reflect how they wish their breakups had gone. Interesting reading the comments. I'd say that if you're in a supportive enriching relationship with somebody, then there isn't a conflict between that and your professional life. Because in the end there are just so many hours you can spend doing anything before you burn out. So taking a chill pill with somebody you enjoy is not only enjoyable, but actually helps you to move forward in your professional life.

My main reason for commenting was to push back against the "you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't" feeling. If you are rational you'll likely make choices that lead to a happy ending. Now, add passion and conviction to that rationality. I'd have a hard time believing a rational and passionate person would find themselves in their golden years beating themselves up over a choice made or not made.

I can relate to this scene. When I was a senior in High school, I was the captain of the varsity wrestling team and all the weight was on my shoulders. The team had a good reputation of going far into masters or state and my coach was really tough on us. i had to do everything I could to set a good example and develop leadership skills for my teammates. I was also busy with AP classes and I didn’t have time for a social life. I had to break up with my girlfriend at the time because my mind was filled with stress and ambitions that I had no desire to be with someone or hang out with friends. Didn’t go as far as we wanted to, but still paid off in the end.

He broke up with her to pursue a potential career (not promised by any means) and failed.
And while he “succeeded” in the end, he lost everything to get to that point.
And people grounded him like his father, brought him back to reality, sensibility. But in the end, he still chose to pursue the toxic relationship with his instructor and strive to make that connection work.
I find that tragic, not admirable.
The thing he needed was balance. When we are not balanced, we become jaded and narrow. He needed people to ground him. But he pushed them away.

I love how the films subtly points out how he is actually sort of right. What she says after his breakup rant are things that she has clearly been thinking about, that would have bubbled over at some point and been brought up later in the relationship if they stayed together, and its exactly those things that she mentioned that he was explaining as to why they couldn't be together.
When he says "that's exactly my point", he isn't wrong to say that, she proved the point he was making by reacting that way. If she just walked away or took it on the chin, I would have disagreed, but the film wants you to not only acknowledge that he has gone way too deep into following his passion, but that he is also right, too.
FINALLY saw this movie in full. He was absolutely right to do that. He knew exactly what he wanted and where his passion lies

The irony of this scene is when that boy was booted off the band later on. He tried to reconnect with her on the phone. But she actually forgot who he was at first, and now with a new boyfriend, would not give him the time of day. So the complete opposite has happened. Sure, in the end he proved to be a great drummer. But in the face of whom? His mean bandmates? A toxic tutor? And a crowd of stuffy old people? It wouldn't be so much of a pyrrhic victory had he just tried to commit with this girl, rather than to jump to conclusions and wear that pride on his sleeve all alone when he's back home.

He was just honest with her but deep inside he's suffering more that her. You can notice it by the way he's shaking when she left (even he turns away like he wanna stop her). And when he's almost crying finding out she's already taken. He did it right...even he was rude and stupid kid...but he didn't want to hurt her in some ways in the future. He knew the difficulty of his path and his emotional stenght. Not everybody can handle the good job and have a great love togheter.
She did a great job on this scene. Only a few lines but she hit them. Didn’t need to draw out the scene, awesome use of screen time with facial expressions, great editing too.

The interesting thing I realized as I grow up watching this movie almost once a year is that these types of breakups happen not because of an issue with the relationship or with the other side; rather, there is a deep internal struggle and confusion that someone in Neiman's situation cannot pinpoint and resolve, so they desperately try to "change the environment" hoping to find a solution.
After the breakup, however, the issue is still unresolved. Even worse - if the other side was understanding and non-toxic - the break up strips the confused person from the joy and support they previously received in the relationship.
