  • A HISTORICAL VIDEO GONE BAD IN RIGA LATVIA 🇱🇻 (Part 2)
Join me on this soon to be historical visit of Riga's central train station in Riga Latvia.
We take the long walk around to the Riga Central Market and speak to a young Latvian that gives us an insight on the impact of the war in Ukraine in Latvia.
Finally we go for lunch in an authentic Soviet place, where we enjoy their amazing Fish Salyanka.
If you enjoy adventure videos in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, then grab your Vodka, some Zakuski and join me as we visit the soon to be hisotrical Riga Central Station.

I like the Russian guy who sells the kabab/spices. Think he is very intelligent. It is not easy to learn another language. His history of Latvia in WWII era is typical of people who dislike the Latvian rule. It was sad that the Latvian were occupied originally by the Russians than the Nazis and then the Russians again in WWII. They took over the lands for fifty years.

    Hi Justin,
As a Latvian, I really appreciate your position on the whole situation. There is so much populism right now on all sides of the spectrum, and hate is being thrown around left and right just to get some points. All of this creates a ticking time bomb for future generations, which is sad. We all should live in peace and understand that culture and language should be separated from the actions of certain individuals.
Peace and all the best to you.

Thank you so much for the video.
I understand the situation in Russia and Ukraine much better now. And I understand myself a bit better as well. Especially my own sadness of living in a very crime infested South Africa, where syndicates and political gangs already changed everything that I once knew as a child.
I am very relieved, that South Africa is free from the apartheid regime, but eventually many precious and valuable characteristics went down the drain, as history is being destroyed. Today you need to make lots of money, to experience normal things, that was once totally free. Someone from Pretoria, South Africa, must please help me if I am wrong, but now many others and myself lost our freedom of movement in the process. Crime is limiting our freedom to do normal living, like walking in a park. Today Pretoria's unique feel is cancelled by lots and lots of busy malls, where people can meet. It became a city to work, and a place to study. And that is it. Once it was a city for tourism. I do understand the sorrow when everything is being destroyed, to make space for a new era of strange things. It is so sad, and difficult to harness yourself mentally and emotionally.
Still, thank you so much for your valuable videos. 💗🕊

Anyone who lived in soviet union just want to get rid of all this crap and never again look at it. It is probably hard to understand for a tourist point of view cuz it is kinda funky and odd, but yeah, we generally hate it and would love to wipe everything soviet off our country. In general, soviet union time was super depressing and bad for our country and people should understand that, we did not have freedom of speech and you were not allowed to be Latvian so to speak...

The early soviet architecture is great though because Stalin was the fan of the classics I found out. The 1950s architecture is called stalinistic. There are many great examples of that in latvia and elsewhere. For example spilve airport buildings is amazing and both daugavpils and liepaja university buildings as well, it's just nice to look at something like that. They follow the classic principles. Sovetico later modern architecture sucks though

the guy 10:00 he does make some valid points but the thing is Russians make same aggressive statements to Latvians as well. Keep in mind that to Latvians, the Russians were not really seen as liberators then aggressors. Obviously history has a lot to play in this. I believe that both sides should respect the fallen regardless of who's right or who's wrong, they were both victims of political power games that we must not repeat again. The relations with Russian-Latvian nationals has always been sour and got even wrose when russian language would have become a national language in latvia. We gave Aleksejs Roslikov a chance in hopes of a peaceful start between two nationals only to end up becoming a BIG mistake. And now the Ukraine situation only made peoples worries even more justified. There's a term for the guy in the first part of your video that attacked you, in fact even russian have a term for them and they're called vatniks or ватник in Russian. note I have nothing against russians I have friends that are Russian. Hope you enjoyed your trip in Latvia! Sorry for this mess it currently is at the moment!

Please stop celebrating ' soviet ' crap, the more it gets removed the better, why not learn and show real Latvian culture and speak to real Latvian people; the language, the folk dancing, the food, the song festival, the traditional designs etc You are essentially experiencing Russian - Latvian culture rather than original real Latvian culture, do you know the difference ?

You are right, it seems to be quite common on this channel and others, some people for some reason go looking for this soviet stuff, for some reason find it attractive. Me not so much at all apart from the early beautiful 1950s stalinistic architecture such as the spilva airport building that he showed on this channel. It was great to see. But yes there are many latvian language and culture things and places to be shown for sure. And others, all the baltic german stuff thats left, it's amazing. Latvia jew stuff, he already showed the synagogue in rezekne. But he could also go to the tragic riga great choral synagogue site for example. There once stood one amazing building

This is against Putin agressivenes towards neighboring countries. In Russia, no freedom of expression etc.
If some or most speak Russians doesn’t mean they’re Russians or in favor of Russia authoritarian government. If only kremlin is not a power hunger if the government just focus on its economic growth without harassing its neighbors there would be peace in EU.

I wish all people could look at the situation this clearly. There are so many Russians who oppose Putin’s war. And we have to remember that it’s the particular people who are to blame for this and not the language, culture etc. I think most people understand that but there’s always a minority who takes it too far. Unfortunately, that minority can create huge problems, just like in case of Putin.
I hear about canceling all things Russian and thought what will it exactly solve? Shall I stop my kids from watching Masha and Bear now as well? 😀 Even kids would understand it doesn’t make sense.

Justin, I am from Riga living in UK. I will never go back to Riga just because Russian culture has been cancelled and Russian language is ruled out. Riga will never be a happy place to build up a family because it is doomed to be haunted by war. One can’t be happy in a country where 40 per cent of population are alienated due to their ethnic origins. Imagine if in Wales, Nothern Ireland and Scotland one day the local ethnic groups ban the use of English. I am not too sure if you were going to like it. The volcano of civil war bubbles in the bowels and one day hissing lava will flow all over poor Latvians.
I know that you don’t want become political in your videos but I thought that I’d leave a comment to give you a better picture on Latvia’s life and it’s bitter future if the policy of hate is to continue.
Otherwise I’d like to thank you for doing your videos.
