  • We explore the Latvian capital of Riga! 🇱🇻 This is the largest city in the Baltic region. A walk around the old town helps tell the story of Latvia’s volatile history. Today, Riga is an architectural stunner: We take a look at the handsome Three Brothers (a trio of the city’s oldest dwellings), the spite-inspired Cat House, and some of the 800 or so Art Nouveau buildings that are scattered throughout the city. We also hit up the popular local eatery Lido to fill up on borscht and cabbage rolls and get down to some ‘80s classics- this is the Baltics' biggest nightlife hub, after all. 😉

Thanks! It is crazy to think how close Latvia is to everything being that far east.

Great to hear! Estonia is one of our favorite places in Europe, after Italy, so that says a lot. Riga, Latvia has a different feel but has incredible architecture and very interesting food. Are you staying in the center of Riga?

Latvian SSR ceased to exist in 4th of may 1990 with a declaration of restoration of independence, and not the date you mentioned

Thanks for your comment. We do not specifically list a date for the Latvia SSR ending. But, thank you for any and all information.

Thanks for the video. So, actually there is a "harp" at the Swedish Gate and it is an ancient national string instrument called "Kokle".

Wow! We missed this detail. What does the harp represent? Thanks for watching.

@@BigSmallTravel Kokle is a Latvian plucked string instrument. Some see it as a Latvian percussion instrument. It is overlooked.

And the Russian population makes roughly 25% and not half as u mentioned

Thanks for your comment. We really enjoyed the architecture and beauty of Riga. In terms of the Russian statistic, I believe we were quoted by a few people/sources of half of the population being Russian speakers.

@@BigSmallTravel it's exaggerated. It could be close to the truth in Riga, since most of the country's ethnic Russians live there, but it does not apply to the whole country. I base my considerations on experience and the last data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

At 2:38 you say "Yes, da".
Why would you want to say yes in another language when the video is about Latvia?
Would you say "yes, oui" in a video about England?

It is mispronounced. Is it is Ja in Latvia? When we made a video in Italy, we had some big issues with Italian pronunciation.@@oskarsrode2167

@@BigSmallTravel We don't like being compared to Russians. We've had a lot of un-justice from their side. Recent events in Georgia and Ukraine have stirred those feelings again. Baltic tribes were here for more than four thousand years. Russians just about three hundred. And they've been terrible. Especially after 1940. They've colonized our countries. Sent our people in masses to far away concentration camps.
