This is why you NEED to visit RIGA | Europe's MOST eccentric city (VLOG)

- Come and join me in exploring the beautiful capital city of Latvia, Riga. I had absolutely no expectations for Riga, just a spontaneous £4.99 outbound flight.
I was blown away by the architecture, the beauty and eccentricity of some of the buildings, such as House of the Blackheads and Riga Doms Cathedral. Combined with this, narrow streets, an abundance of colour and array of history, buildings such as The Three Brothers added a wealth of intrigue and history to the city.
I visited other interesting sites such as the Freedom Monument and Riga Central Market, considered as possibly the biggest market in Europe.
I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did feel free to join me on my other adventures. It would be great for you to come along. See you next time! :)

Good man, Riga is a hidden gem!
Absolutely it is, I think it will become far more popular over the coming years! thank you Davis
It truly is spectacular, how many details you've captured in this video! I do belive that sometimes us - Latvians, forget to appreciate the true beauty of Rīga! I guess when you've seen the city so many times, the prettiness gets lost in the mundane! Thank you for this amazing video!
Thank you for the kind comment Krista. Sure, when you see something every day it easy to be able to lose appreciation for its beauty! Take care 😇
Beautiful 😍 city !! I am totally ignorant about your country ! I am gonna learn more !! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💕💞
Peace 😇and love ❤from Algeria 🇩🇿
Hello Algeria 🇩🇿 🤗 💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
This actually puts such a different perspective of Riga for me as an latvian. It makes me realize that it is actually so beautiful and magical, not the same as we see it daily :)
Really pleased I can show you a different side to your city you may take for granted. Thank you 😇
My Dad was a Latvian. When he died he left us 136 hectares of land in Latvia 🇱🇻 farm land. The USSR took the land after the Second World War. Demolished the huge stone farmhouse. Then in the 90’s he got his land back when Latvia got it’s independence back. I have never visited Latvia. I also have some family there. Maybe one day I will visit there..👍♥👍🇬🇧🇱🇻 Your a great vlogger ! 👍
That is a very interesting story, thank you for sharing. I hope you can visit, Riga is a beautiful city.
Thank you for your comment 😊
@@BenRobson123 your welcome
Riga is fantastic and very underrated
Certainly looks an interesting place.
I really miss latvia the people are as sweet as the Beautiful city riga
Thanks for this lovely video! Riga is truly full of beauty and eccentricity. Loved it! :)
It’s beautiful isn’t it! I’m glad you enjoyed this video, thank you for the comment 😊
I love Riga! Love from Estonia!
Fantastic! Actually I’m thinking about visiting Tallinn next time, would you recommend, and perhaps Helsinki too?😁
@@BenRobson123 Of course! Tallinn is one of my favorite cities and there is so much to see! I would recommend Helsinki, however it is better to do it as a day or 2 day trip from Tallinn as it can be quite expensive compared to Tallinn. For transport around Tallinn, I recommend Trams, Buses, and Trolleybuses, less so taxis. For getting around Estonia, I highly recommend the train, as it is fast, comfy, quick, and not very expensive!
Fantastic, that is very helpful. Thank you so much! Flights from Newcastle aren’t great, but I may pick up some more cheap flights to Riga and then coach to Tallinn, and also explore Helsinki too! Thank you for the advice 😊
@@BenRobson123 I would highly recommend NOT coaching to Tallinn. The prices, comfort, and speed are really unreliable and not worth it. Try flying, or taking the train.
@@BenRobson123 Here is a tip: Do Newcastle - Helsinki flight, explore Helsinki, and then hop on a ferry to Tallinn. Probably the best option in my opinion.
Loved this one, the market looked amazing. Great how you did the travel tips at the end.
Thank you for this video. I am Estonian, live in Tallinn. I come to Riga regularly for a certain clinic. So I have walked around quite a lot in Riga just to pass time for my bus or my appointment, because I am obsessed to use the 7pm bus to Tallinn. So I have walked around A LOT but never really looked at the city as a tourist cause there are other things on my mind when I am there. This video actually inspired me to spend some time exploring next time I go.
You made a good point in the video: there is a lot very different stuff all mixed up together. So there can be a medieval building, a very nice modern building, an awful Soviet style monster and some random I-dont-know-what all on the same street. And that makes it a bit hard to grasp the soul of the place. The good thing about Tallinn, my city, is that since we were quite poor after the Middle Ages, we never did all the rebuilding and remodelling during centuries, so the medieavalness in Tallinn is a lot better preserved. And then already it became illegal to pester regions with old buildings anyway, so luckily we dont have modern buildings next to Medieval ones. So as a whole I like Tallinn more. Riga is sort of all over the place. While it does have a lot of amazingly beautiful buildings. I will definitely spend more time consciously exploring there from now on.
Some of the buildings, the merchant houses, are very similar to those in Tallinn.
I have tried to find the man in the box on the riverside but never managed to find it:)
What hostel is that? (Sorry, if you mention it, I havent watched to the end yet). Have been looking for a normal hostel in Old town which is not too full. Honestly, havent found one. The ones I have found are packed with very weird people to say the least, or are very far from the centre.
There is an Anglican church near the river in Old town. I have a cat friend there. I sometimes like to sit in the church yard and have coffee and read a book. The cat always comes (from a whole in the church, so she lives there), sleeps on my lap for a while and then leaves. And so every time. Why she trusts me like that, I dont know.
It is nice to have a cool city like that a 4 hour busride away from Tallinn. Last time I was waiting for the night bus, and discovered how cool it was to walk on the bridge across the river and back.
You should check out Tallinn some time. It is kind on similar, yet different. Smaller and has a more specific feeling, I think. A definitely more quiet than Riga. We just have drunk Finns. It looks like Riga the rest of Europe"s drunk people.
Anyway, greetings to all the Latvians out there.
By the way, I went to see a Latvian play the other day in Tallinn. "The boy who saw in the dark" God, one of the most depressing plays I have ever seen. Leaves one with no hope
Nice video :) Riga is so lovely and its architecture is excellent.
Thank you! it’s a beautiful city isn’t it, I fell in love with the architecture
Thank you for visiting Rīga, Latvia!
It was my pleasure!
Absolutely amazing and informative, great travel, great video!

Nice video Ben! I've just got back from Tallinn and will be visiting Riga next month. Gatwick is my nearest airport and I'll be flying with another airline, but I managed to get some cheap flight tickets from the airline you mentioned for Helsinki in July. Happy travels!

Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I have just returned from a week in Riga (also flew from Newcastle). It really is a spectacular city. Thanks.
Cool video. Thank you!
Heading to Riga in October for a similar solo trip, the SkyScanner model is definitely the way to see the world. £100 got me five flights over four destinations around Europe in 2019 and I'll be making many more trips like this in the near future. Can't wait to see what Riga has to offer
That’s great, you can certainly get around cheap. maybe not so much this time of year! Have a great time, I’m sure you’ll really enjoy it, safe travels!

Greetings from Rīga! Awesome video. If you want to see Rīga from above there is another one great point of view - Radisson SAS hotel Latvia Skyline bar and especially from lady's room here.
Nice to know! Thank you for commenting Antra 😊
Always stayed at the Radisson when in Riga on business. Happy times. And good cocktails in that bar
Great video Ben!
Thank you!😊
Hey man! I went to Riga from Newcastle a while back and have been back again. It’s my favourite city in europe, so laid back and relaxing plus for £4.99 each way it’s cheaper than staying at home for the weekend! Great video man!
Nice one, it’s a great city isn’t it. Its mad when the flights are so cheap, I’ve just got back from Riga / Tallinn yesterday. It was beautiful with all the snow!
Thanks Jack 😊
@@BenRobson123 I went to Tallin too! One time I did Riga, Tallinn, then a ferry to helsinki! It was a lot of traveling but so fun! Tallinn is great!

I absolutely loved Riga when I visited it.
Btw you’re super cute 😍
Your video was nice. I'm a big fan of Riga and I did love your video :) You need a bit more energy as a presenter but in all, very detailed and I'm subscribing to your channel and leaving a comment to help with the youtube algorythms :) There is a bit more to Riga than the town centre, but for a taste of Riga you did a super job. I liked the drone footage too.
Thank you for the constructive comment. When I watch it back, I’m also surprised at how monotone my voice is, I thought I was quite enthusiastic at the time 😅

this is such a weird way to see my own city, you made it look so beautiful and stunning, i guess when u see it all the time it gets mundane and not that special, but i loved your vid
Thank you so much! Glad I could show you your own city in a positive way 😁
That's normal, but it is a special place.
I have been to 60 countries and i learnt a lot of travel hacks from u through this video
60 countries, that’s incredible! Glad it was of help, safe travels 😇
Nice shots of Old Riga, but do come back and see Riga's Art Nouveau architecture - it has one of the world's biggest collections of the style.
Thank you Philip, I was a little confused as to what the ‘Art Noveau’ architecture was, isn’t that in the Old Town?
@@BenRobson123 The Art Nouveau is quite a bit out of Old Riga. It's just a small area, about two streets, lined with buildings built in the Art Nouveau style. They're very large and grand looking and the style is completely different than Old Riga
@@adrija4750 To elaborate, this would be the outer central area of Riga, though still in the city center, part of what we call "Klusais centrs" or "The quite center" (rough translation)..
Ur right. Riga is beautiful! I live in kraslava tho:( so it takes four hours to get there but the beaches there are nice!
Good video , thanks for sharing , I also take landscape videos in UK and sometimes abroad .It's very helpful and interesting . I subscribed to the channel, so I'm looking forward to it. Thank you for the good video

7:26 this was definitely the highlight of the video 😂 I did not expect that
I live most of my life in Riga and never been in places as you :D Next time I go to Riga I will go to some.
That’s really cool, it’s strange how easy it is to miss things when you live somewhere. Thanks for the comment!😇
now THIS is what i call quality content! what was the name of the hostel? and would you suggest travelling there in febuary?
Thank you Matteo! The hostel is called Blue Bird Hostel, and I’m not sure what it’s like in February, I don’t see why not 😇
I am Latvian, some facts I didn't know about my country :) thanks
I currently live in Riga and I am surprised that they allowed you to filmed inside central market. It is written by the door that no pets and no filming inside. My friend did not know that filming is not allowed and someone came up to her and told her to put the camera down.
Anyway your contents are great.
Ohh that’s interesting, I never saw a sign! I didn’t film a great deal.. so perhaps just nobody saw.
Thank you 😇
I also vlogged about Rīga including the Central Market. I only took a few clips and the people inside were not really bothered although I asked one of the sellers if I could film some of what they were selling and he was OK about it.
May I ask you what camera and lenses did you use in this video? Wide angle is awesome 👏🏼
Everything was filmed on my iPhone 11!😁
Heading to Riga as a student this January to RTU 😁❤️
Beautiful city, have a great time in Riga!😇
Actually zeppelin hangars were located in the western part of Latvia in a small town Vaiņode. Hangar's metal frame parts were brought to Riga and then like you said - they were made in existing look in 1920's .
Thank you for the correction 😊
Glad you didn't go behind Origo where the train stations are, especially in a later time.
😯
Thank you all for the super nice comments. I myself am Latvian 🇱🇻❤️ and I respect you all, you love my country. I also respect you, you are the best ❤❤❤

If u ever some back to Latvia u have to visit Rundales Pils aka( Rundales Palace) and u wont regret it specially in summer it so beutiful
Is it close to Riga?
@@BenRobson123 its about 70km from Riga
Did you use the UAV to record the scene, baeutiful
Great video, what was the hostel you stayed in please?
Thanks. Blue Bird Hostel :)
Cracking vid Ben. Being a fellow Geordie I really fancy a dodge out to explore Riga at some point. Did you have to apply for permission to fly the drone in Latvia. What are the rules regarding that ? Thanks 👌
Lovely to have you here Craig! i’d deffo recommend it, there’s still some really cheap flights this month and next, I may fly back out there myself and try some of the other neighbouring countries.
The rules are generally pretty similar all around Europe, but check a website like drone-laws.com/drone-laws-in-latvia/ and it’ll tell you a little more. If you have a DJI drone, always worth checking on the map the place you want to fly, there are some no fly zones in Riga, I had to cross the river and fly from there 😊
Thanks again Craig, hope to hear from you again!
@@BenRobson123 Thanks for that Ben. I have only recently purchased a DJI mini (slowly getting to grips with it) so this info is very helpful indeed. Hoping to take it with me on my next adventure !! Subbed 👌
@@craigbloxham8328 definitely, sounds great. The rules are far more relaxed for a drone less than 250g. Best of luck!
Greetings from Latvia ❤
👋😁
Nice
😍😊
In terms of the market, the steel structure of market hangars was used for dirigible hangars, but near the town of Vainode, which is 200km west. So those steel parts were transported to a building site in parts, and the market was finished in 1930. Regardless, thank you for visiting and telling about Riga!
Next time visit other towns like Liepaja, Ventspils, and Kuldiga(which could be in a single episode) - You will like it!
Fantastic, thank you for your information 😊
I’d love to visit again one day, perhaps in winter. Which city would you recommend most of it’s winter?
@@BenRobson123 It's still better if You come in warm time. Winter is not so attractive in small houses as the seasonal business is usually closed there. Riga has some festivals in wintertime. Liepaja also is illuminated, still walkable, and enjoyable... smaller towns hardly do.
