2024 F1 MIAMI GP RACE analysis by Peter Windsor

  • Lando wins! That was the big takeaway from Miami. Unlike Melbourne, what's more, where Ferrari and Carlos Sainz were victorious after a Red Bull brake problem, Lando Norris's victory for McLaren-Mercedes in Miami was scored at the expense of both Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc: Lando beat them both in a clean fight. In this video, Peter Windsor analyses Lando's weekend and the key components of his win - and highlights the performance differences between the McLaren and the Red Bull.

9:57 this should never have happened. The safety car should've been launched on track in front of the leader, not the 2nd placed car. So while Max et al got bunched up at slower speed behind the safety car for almost half a lap, Lando could make his pit stop and come back easily many seconds in front. I call this gaining an unfair advantage and I don't understand why noone's talking about it or teams protesting this. Don't get me wrong, I loved to see Lando win, but not under these circumstances.

Having 7 seconds on Max, which would've given Max another complaint that he was too dominant, was also a nice feature. I do hope McLaren gets more wins and more exciting races. Maybe we'll hear that Max's front wing had damage that impacted his speed and balance. Dutch commentators also said that RB didn't test the hard tyres on Friday. I am super happy for Lando, but Lando got way more than 10 seconds advantage. He went from being 10 seconds ahead with old tires to 20 seconds ahead with new tires. Of course, he had to give that back before the restart, but in effect, he went from being a few positions down (even with good luck of a safety car) and having to fight to the front to being gifted the newest tires and P1 for the restart.
That's not to say it wouldn't have been an interesting race (given his pace) without the safety car/race control stuff, but the announcers seemingly ignored it and pretended there wasn't momentous good fortune there. Rubbed me the wrong way. It would be like watching an NFL game and 7 points randomly showing up on the board for a team and nobody pays it any notice.

  • @oxonomy2372
    @oxonomy2372 Před 12 dny +4

For anyone who thinks Lando won because of a safety car mistake, it didn’t actually make a difference. Let me explain…
The safety car was called quickly (approx 25s after the crash), at this time Lando was at the start/finish line, by the time the safety car got down the the pit lane and onto the track, Lando had already passed the pit lane exit. There’s no way the safety car could have picked up Lando on that lap.
And even if the safety car let Max go, Lando would have had time to make a free pit stop.
The gap was 18.6s when max crossed the start/finish line, before Max could even see the safety car.
The reason the gap went to up to 18.6s from 11.5s is because Max had to travel a further distance at safety car speed compared to Lando. When the safety car was called and everyone had to slow down to a delta, Max was at T17, Lando was on the start/finish straight. So from T-17 to the start/finish Lando could take it full speed, Max couldn’t. That’s how the gap increased to 18.6s. This happens regardless, so even if the safety car let Max past him when Max caught up to it at turn 4, the gap would have remained around 18s, giving Lando enough time for a free pit.

Yeah, when RB went for the hards during VSC, you could see that Max wasn't catching up to Lando. The time stayed between 10 and 11 seconds of a gap. Of course, when Lando pitted during the Safety Car, his tires were 10-15 laps fresher than Max's. For Max to win that race, his car had to have a better balance and ridiculous speed. So, just like Max's first win in Barcelona, Lando had to have a bit of luck to win.
It will be interesting to see next race. Will Red Bull have their setup right? Will McLaren have the same speed? Either way, with having two Sprint races this year, we have seen some backmarkers reaching the podium or close to it, and see teams score points and win, who would usually not.

Lando/McLaren Fan here, why was the safety car picking up Max (bad habit?) I thought it was going to be close for Lando to get in and out before Max came around, but with Max being held up it wasn't even close.
A few things F1 should consider stealing from Indy Car:
    1. During Qualifying use a timing line that isn't the start finish. The line that separates sector 2 and 3 would be ideal. This allows for cars to get off the track immediately after completing a flying lap. There are too many cars on the track in Q1, resulting in too many penalties.
1b. Split Q1 into even and odd based on current points. Top 7 from each advance. Again solving the issue of traffic during qualifying.
    2. Causing a collision on track has got to be more than 5sec. Sainz' (a drive I like) penalty for essentially ending Piastri's race is pathetic. That penalty isn't severe enough. The old school stop/go would be far more fitting. (Hamilton's 1st corner for sprint was worse. 4th car in the inside with no ability to make the corner was always going to end badly. A 7 time champion should know this.) Indy has puts cars to the back of the field, F1 needs to look into much stiffer penalties.
    3. Safety car needs to be leaving pit out as the leader passes pit in to ensure it picks up the correct car. Miami looked like a mistake to me.

  • @gopr3117
    @gopr3117 Před 13 dny +2

I think a lot of people are underplaying the tyre offset advantage that Lando had at the end. Max pit on lap 23. The race restarted after the safety car on lap 32 - so effectively Lando had tyres about 10 laps younger than Max (which itself is over a sixth of the race distance offset), and 14 younger than Charles.
So getting 7 seconds on Max in the 35 remaining laps is about 0.2 seconds per lap average. To me that feels about right for tyres 10 laps younger, on a day when RB weren’t as quick as usual.
The point I’m making is that Lando wasn’t blisteringly quick, and to say he “definitely would have won without the safety car anyway” is total nonsense. The SC gifted the McLaren the win. While many of us are pleased for them, let’s not pretend this race was won on merit alone.
Obviously F1 pundits/presenters on Sky/F1 TV are not going to talk about this on the coverage because it’s bad for the sport and they are trying to big up the win as much as possible.

Lando had done multiple fastest laps in a row and likely wasn't going to pit for a good bit. This would've been enough to overcut Sainz, Perez and LeClerc. That was the first fuck up, then Lando came in before the SC and they didn’t know what to do, after some time they let the SC pass Lando.

Ok, I've looked deeply into what happened with the SC. Lando is, undoubtedly, very lucky the safety car came out too early and picked up the wrong driver, because the safety car was announced literally 1 second after Lando passed the pit line entrance. It could have been disastrous for him. He had to go all the way round again while the safety car came out early and picked up Max, slowed him and the pack by 35 seconds, allowing Lando to zoom around the track, pit and retain the lead despite having only an 11 second lead when the SC came out. It took me 24 hours to work out exactly what happened, look at the data, track location data, etc. It was a bizarre confluence of conditions. That said, I wouldnt have it *any* other way. Lando was faster than Max all day and I almost cried with happiness when he won. I'm so glad he no longer has this no win curse hanging over him. Lando needed this. F1 needed this. He beat Max on pace alone in those last laps. Who was the last driver who kept Max behind that long so convincingly? Incredible effort!

On top of that, only having 1 practice session to get a good setup, which was only about 40 minutes too, because of the red flag. Verstappen is my favourite driver, but I'm really happy Lando won, and I think Max is, too. Plus, it placates the people whining about F1 being boring. Well done Lando and Mclaren. Is it significant that not only did Lando out pace Max in the second half of the race but also that Lewis was keeping up with Perez and almost passing him?

Looking over about Max going off track It really looks like he damaged the floor... Besides I also think by the data you gave Pete like Max had more wing.
I'm curious about the upgrade McLaren brought to this race.

Peter, minor note... Free Practice graphic has 20 names, 18 times and 20 speeds... Norris ends up between two times.

Peter hhas made this before the news came out that Max indeed had a hole in the floor. Floor damage due to his own error I suppose. This explains why Max was relativ slow (but still second in the race).
About the safety catr. It was a comparable blunder as in Abu Dhabi 2021. The safety car HAS to catch up the LEADING car.
The reaction form Max on this is gold..."Sometimes you're lucky wyth a SC , sometimes yopure unlucky.

Let’s go LANDO!!! There it is Sir! You did it. Everyone knew it would come. The first of many. Congratulations on a fantastic performance. Landos McLaren looked obviously stable and quick. There were medium/high speed corners where Lando looked as it wasn’t taking much physical effort, the car was there when it we needed it.

The few minutes from 4:00 on about the SC are just completely wrong, Peter. Neither Max nor Charles pitted under the VSC, they couldnt because it was just half a lap. Bit weird how you just made up an entire scenario

The upgraded MCL38’s pace was ridiculous, I’m sure it’ll settle down at other tracks, but I can see McLaren winning another race or two this season.

Considering Ferrari is still running Bahrain spec car, finishing 0.19s on pace behind the heavily upgraded McLaren is a really good sign. Hopefully the Imola ugrades help with the slow speed corners and we might have a 3 way battle for wins this season.

Decent result and a good effort guys 🏎🏎 Very unlucky with the safety car timing once again but getting a podium is always nice 👍
PS - Huge praise must be given to mechanics for that 1.9 second pit stop during Charles' pit stop. Bravo! 👏💪🏽 💚🤍❤ Forza Ferrari! 💚🤍❤

Such an amazing result. Great for Formula 1. Going to be FASCINATING to see if this McLaren pace continues on or is just a one off - if it continues, that 50-ish point gap Max has on Lando might not be so comfortable!
I have been saying all season so far that RB are not home and dry, despite how the media weirdly seems to enjoy downplaying the season. It was Ferrari that I thought could post a challenge, but maybe now it is McLaren... ! I LOVE F1 haha

I have just been bagging the Miami parking lot G.P., but it ended up a pretty

and further back, a battle between Honey Badger and Fernando.

Fantastic race , of course because Lando gets his first win but also because it was close hard racing from start to finish . Ocon described the race as going at 110% throughout.

Look at the sprint from the Chinese GP 2024. Verstappen passed Hamilton for the lead on lap 9 and pulled almost 13 seconds on him in 10 laps.
The damage theory holds no water since Max could barely squeeze out 2.5 seconds in 15 laps after the safety car ended on lap 3 in the sprint, and LeClerc mentioned that he didn't want to risk pushing. That's about the same gap he had over Piastri after 20 laps in the race.

  • @rekcik15

I appreciate you touching on the odd timing of the safety car. IMO it's unfortunate because I feel it robbed us of an even better finish and Lando earning his first win with style, passing Max in the restart and not an asterisk. I have been wishing for his first win but at the end of the day, Max should've been in front of Lando after the safety car period. What a race to the finish that would've been.

Peter, I'm an American and rightly proud of it. I'm writing you here because I trust and admire you and have done so for many years. I hope that many F1 fans who feel the same will stop by your place and see what I have written.
We are enduring a terrible political regime in the USA at the moment and to someone foreign-born, and to someone who only hears what they are fed by their handlers, it may be hard to understand the appeal of Trump. Most Americans want him back. I want him back. So it doesn't do well for the F1 community - either directly or indirectly - to disparage him for coming to the Miami race.
If we allow politics to get into our beloved international sport then it is easy to attack the warring Russians and take their race away and then cancel the Chinese race because of their various and nefarious geopolitical activities. For sure we would cancel all the middle east races on human rights violations alone. What country would be left whose politics or leaders or religion has a perfect track record (pun intended)? Let those who are without sin cast the first stone, so to speak.
Further, I can promise you that I am not qualified to make a judgement on the good or bad points of QE II's reign, I don't even know the political hierarchy of the Netherlands, and I don't care who is the current chancellor of Germany. I'm sure the inverse is true.
So concerning all the snide remarks about our past and future President, I say it has no place in sport.
