2024 F1 Imola qualifying analysis by Peter Windsor

  • Max Verstappen seized his eighth consecutive pole at Imola, equalling the record of Ayrton Senna 30 years on from Senna's passing at the same circuit. It was a tensely-fought pole, too - as Peter Windsor details in this video. The softest tyres in the Pirelli range made it impossible to complete three optimum sectors; and the two McLaren-Mercedes were almost a perfect match for the Red Bull-Honda in terms of grip, balance and top speed. Max it was, though, who was quickest by the finest of margins. Australia's Oscar Piastri was second for McLaren, ahead of his more experienced team-mate, the Miami GP winner, Lando Norris. Ferrari, still slightly lacking in top speed, qualified fourth and fifth.

    Given how we - the audience - are so dialed in to the way that they dial in the cars each weekend, we NEED the standard 3 practice sessions format to really feel connected to the cars and the way the drivers are feeling them out. It is anticipated that tomorrow's race will be very competitive, particularly in light of today's lap times and longer runs. Additionally, the fact that the teams did not compete here last year appears to have put many of them at a disadvantage.

    The ability of RB and Max to “find it” for qualifying and race day “consistently” is dam impressive.
    One wonders if part of this is that Max and RB are really good at sandbagging and being deceitful over the radio to con their opposition into a feeling of over confidence?
    Whatever their secret sauce or true abilities are it is dam fine!

    I'd say it's becoming time Red Bull ditched Perez. Perez is a good midfielt driver, not more than that. If your teammate takes pole and you get outsted in Q2, that says a lot.
    Also the driver pairing of Norris/Piastri is simply stronger. This is going to cost Red Bull.

    Can we start a petition somewhere, against stupid, elaborate, sponsordriven names? It’s Imola. It’s Sauber. It’s Interlagos. It’s Toro Rosso. It’s Ferrari, for crying out loud! No friggin homeprinter brand is allowed to detract from that! You shall not pass!
    Save us from corporate bullying! I wasn’t gonna buy anything HP anyway, but now I’m actively campaigning against them. You’ve accomplished as much, HP. Be proud. I’ll see you on the Dark Side of Advertising.

    Just a bit of a correction about FP3 Peter. Oscar set his fast lap and then the red flag came out, but there were still two and a bit minutes left once the track was cleared and the others tried to set a fast lap but they couldn’t match Oscars time in FP3

    • @caro2501
      @caro2501 Před 21 dnem

      In FP3 Max for one never got to set a flying lap on the softs because of the red flag, and then with a couple of minutes to go when the track was clear he didn’t cross the line in time to do a flying lap, there were too many others in front of him that did make it to the line. But for them time was too tight to do a proper out lap. And there were others that couldn’t start neither finish their laps because of the red flag.

    The W15 is better than its last 2 predecessors, however, that isnt saying much.
    Both Hamilton and Russells driving prowess is expertly masking just how car off the mark Merc has missed. Put rookies or mid/bottom tier drivers in this car and it is a p14 at best.
