2024 F1 Imola Friday by Peter Windsor

- Ferrari dominated the lap times on Imola Friday, with Charles Leclerc soaking-up the moments with hand waves to the fans from the cockpit. McLaren-Mercedes also look very strong on the back of their win in Miami - and the factory Mercedes team, for its part, seems refreshed by the latest upgrades. At Red Bull-Honda, by contrast, all was not well. Both drivers lacked top speed and Max Verstappen, in particular, was unhappy with the inconsistency of the handling balance. In this video Peter Windsor looks at the themes of the day - and offers an explanation for the problems at Red Bull.

Dude, other drivers aren't angry with Lewis's driving because he goes to Ferrari ... they are mad because he keeps on ruining everybody else's laps!
I think maybe Peter might be reading into something that isn’t really there, however, there isn’t another F1 journalist that has his finger on the pulse of the sport like he does.. he most certainly knows more than anyone in the comments!
Ferrari dont need Hamilton...left winger...
@@saldelucia1902these kind of comments are what made Hamilton haters look silly. If you want to hate, at least hate objectively.
It's an interesting opinion on the facts by Peter, and I appreciate him voicing it. Even though it might be a bit far-fetched, who are we to judge?
Peter gets paid for Lewis propoganda. it is never lewiss fault
All good, but bit unnecessary defensive over lewis( national hero i guess) .but what max is saying is absolute true, its every practice where lewis is in the clouds .
Agree 💯. And he has been doing that for years.
No longwinded fancy intro, no clickbait title, no unnecessary background music just straigh-up wheel 🔥 love it
Yup and also don't forget protect Lewis at all costs agenda
And Sore Loser can do no wrong ...
The best
@@king-pl6ufAgree, It is clearly noticeable 💯
@@king-pl6uf hmmm, maybe he likes Lewis or thinks he’s good ? That’s his opinion and why should he hide that ? You are here to listen to him and his insights and his opinions… so why are you even mentioning this ?! I’m german, PW is a Brit, doesn’t surprise or bother me to see a certain „liking my fellow British“ it’s great and free content from a true insider, so enjoy.
So Alonso and Verstappen where jealous,.........? Had nothing to do with the dumb driving by Hamilton,...... Because Verstappen & Alonso where jealous,.........😶
Peter talks nonsense
Yep, Peter is talking bs here. He’s too much into Lewis, I’m afraid
Come on Peter. It is soley Lewis's 2nd class driving that annoyed his competitors! Instant reactions only!
Suggesting drivers were annoyed with lewis because he's going to a team that haven't won a championship since? Is a bit silly.
In all three of the incidents today, lewis was right in the way of a fast moving f1 car. It was pretty dangerous, It happens, thats it.
The over-the-top reactions warrant that suggestion
Such a Hamilton homer. This is the same guy who says Lewis “extracted the maximum out of the car” when he was outperformed by George and had his race saved by a safety car. Great analysis and obviously tons of experience, I just can’t do the bias anymore. Goodbye, forever.
You are just a Lewis hater goodbye
Somehow suspect you’ll be back sooner rather than later once your faux outrage subsides.
Peter refuses to accept that Lewis is just doing some stuff wrong.
He’s a 7time champ but he is not the most innocent thing you can get your mouth around, please stop.
Gotta love Peter making stuff up to defend Lewis at the cost of every other driver. As expected I guess
Other channels are available.
@@mattblack6736who wouldnt watch a video because they disagree with the creator about one point? Everyone knows how Peter feels about Lewis and that it often clouds his judgement. Doesn't make his opinion on other matters inaccurate though.
@@mattblack6736 but we enjoy slagging off you hypersensitive brits :)
@NoxioLukas I didn't want acknowledge his bias before today, but HAM was really good today. Long run 1:20.2 compared to RUS 1:20.6. Both were fast today, but HAM clearly outperformed RUS.
@@NoxioLukasseriously for your health watch someone else.
4:33-5:12 Peter always says how he doesn't want to put words in Lewis' mouth, but he can put words in Max and Fernando's mouth, sayinf they only got annoyed when it was Lewis, even though they get annoyed at any driver that impedes them.
The guy is "upset" for Lewis - as if Lewis can't handle himself. Maybe it's his age to see certain people as unable to stand up for themselves.
Peter has always been right up Lewis's chuff
A 3way battle would be fantastic
We may get it, the field is unbelievably close… if RB doesn’t get it right we are going to go from “another Max win” to “holy crap who’s going to win this” REALLY quickly
Merc slowly joining the pack too
Watching Max having to drive his arse off in an uncompetitive car for a change would be interesting to see
I think it will be 2-way between ferrari and mclaren. It seems they outdeveloped red bull. I disagree with Windsor that red bull could do something differently, cause they ran a different setup in fp2 and were absolutely nowhere, which to me sounds like they reached the limits of the car in its current config.
Always refreshing my YT feed repeatedly when I know PW will be dropping an analysis. Thanks for the awesome content Mr. Windsor!
This might actually turn into a more interesting season than we thought it would be at the beginning. I certainly hope so!
Engine performance data shows Ferrari full power and Bull’s on the bottom of the list. Butt balance is indeed not optimal. Interesting indeed. Lets see if there’s some competition tomorrow 👍
@@caseybankright8260it doesn’t tho
What? So driver are reacting to Lewis bc he is Lewis?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 they are reacting bc he was blocking him, nothing to do with Lewis lmao what a weird take
Hypersensitive brits worried that their mocha jesus isn't getting preferential treatment anymore
I know its hard to process because Dutch think they’re perfect -yes Max over reacted because it was Lewis.
@@BwInNewJerseyWhat nonsense, nobody is perfect and I'm Dutch. Stop this nonsense. Lewis often gets in the way of others, and I have seen that for years. As if he is the only one driving on the track. And what Peter says that Max and Alonso are jealous because Lewis is going to Ferrari. That shows that he is not open to the fact that what Lewis does is annoying. And that was also the case before he went to Ferrari. It could happen, but it has been happening with Lewis for years. If Max does something wrong, he does something wrong and then you don't talk about someone else, and Peter does that.
Looking forward to this race! Go Charles and Lando!
I would think if Riccardo did a Yuki in FP2 , he will be specifically mentioned in this analysis. Yuki was 3rd fastest , beating Lewis , yet nothing mentioned.
It's practise maybe running different set-ups and downforce if they occasionally show pace it's an improvement from back of grid...
Tsunoda. Just Wow.
How many race weekends in the last 3 years has Max started out a little shaky and by quali he's 1 or 2?
What a Wonderful thing is to listen to you Mr Windsor …❤
Thank you for sharing your time. I love all your beautiful energy.
Omg, it might be early days to say this but we might actually have a world championship on our hands!
I think part of the annoyance with Lewis comes from his entitlement. He's clearly been acting like he's not getting what he's owed. He's a solid midfield driver now and he can't come to terms with it so he's been finding other ways to bring the spotlight to himself. He's very very vain and it gets very very tiring to watch
Jeez, if that’s only a part of it I can’t imagine what the rest possibly could be
Thank you Sir you turned real volume!!!!!!!!!
It is not without reason that Alonso and Max grumble about Lewis... we often see that Lewis gets in the way and not Russel. We all know that Mercedes and Lewis played very sophisticated games in obstacles back in the day :-) And again it is your clouded Lewis fan idea that his competitors would be concerned about the move to Ferrari, on the contrary, it is the Ferrari supporters who are concerned about this. And they are right to worry about the fact that Ferrari are still recruiting an old world champion who is clearly past his peak, instead of young talent for the future.
You're such a hater dude
If 2 guys have a problem with Lewis, then maybe it is legit. Not because of Ferrari move. You Brits always will find excuse for LH.
Grow up
Peters right. Theyre salty lewis has had good fortune with the timing in his career. Same as you from the looks of things lol.
Bruh yall exaggerated as fuck

He probably even gets paid for taht propoganda i guess
Wow Hoo, what I've been waiting for. RB and Max have to fight for F1 wins.
The red bull was unsettled through sector 2, it wasnt tyre temperature. If it was tyre temperature he wouldnt have been purple in the 3rd sector, which he was multiple times.
Come on Peter Lewis was driving dangerous and you realy think max cares about that Lewis is going to Ferrari??? Think not
😢 cry baby
That's some dangerous redric man
Dangerous?
@@jb-y1487No, he's right. Lewis has been doing that for years, even before he went to Ferrari. What Peter says is nonsense and shows how biased he is. I think you've been crying for years. That's what I get out your response.
Love you Peter
Been waiting for your video to hear what a pro thinks
They were mad at lewis because he's going to ferrari...how bout just get off the racing line? lol
I think that is a bit generous on Hamilton I'm sure I counted 4 or 5 times he blocked drivers in Fp2 alone haha - what is he doing!?
Well, Horner did say last year.....that things were going to get tougher. Thanks for video - always appreciate the clarity.
That's a horrible take on LH love your channel though but that didn't make any sense.
Towards the end it was the first time in a while I've heard Max actually sound pretty dejected rather than just mad. His first sector shows it's still the overall fastest car when it's working properly, but what horrible setup/tyre/wind issues, notably for the second week in a row. Everyone in the press is going to be cheering the fall of the RB empire, but I wouldn't write him off just yet.
Even if he does badly on Sunday, let's see where he is in three or four races. I strongly suspect the longer this bad spell lasts, the more he's going to destroy the field when he gets back into form if history is any barometer.
Or perhaps this suggests the end of the enormously dominating period that started post summer break 2022. But even if it he doesn't dominate as much, if Mclaren and Ferrari's improvements stick, I'd still be very surprised if he doesn't win the title. He'll still be a force to be reckoned with on a good day. Even if he has to fight more for it. At least it quietens the "F1 is boring now crowd" and should make for an interesting race.
How about Yuki!? What a day for him.
Here's hoping that we actually get a season after all...
Great info as usual Peter, thanks
I'll believe it when i see it on Sunday
Peter listening to you is like a story..i love it ❤
Imola is a great track ! I once was there with Porsche drivers training, one day, we had a bit of very light drizzle in the late afternoon and I was there in a 964 cup car. Nice pirelli Zero Corsa tires and I was able to chase and overtake an elder gentleness his Carrera GT :-). The wet and the power and his street tires made him worry about going or so there was my chance…. So much fun !!!
Who care if Lewis going to Ferrari? Lewis already ruined the lap in fp1 and he did it again in fp2 for Max and Max was already not happy with car so ofc he will be reacting like that and for Alonso we all know he always says something about Lewis when he is in his perimeter
Very very good analysis & gimmick-free. I think it’s all about finding sweet spot / ideal equilibrium point.
Why is it so bumpy there? Could it be from the floods there last year?
You are the best Peter Windsor i love your videos.
Thank you for another excellent analysis, you are the best in the business hands down.
I think Lewis getting called out so much has to do with the fact, he to used to do that all the time. Playing sneaky tricks. Not so much Ferrari.
How nice is it to be at a proper race track!?
does taking downforce increase or decrease tire wear? I thought by increasing downforce you prevent the tires from sliding around too much thereby reducing degradation? Or does it increase vertical load and thus increase degradation?
Depends on track variables and the response from these new gen pirellis
It’s a combination of heat and wear, trying to find that proverbial “sweet spot” I guess its hard to get them at the perfect temp and keeping them there.
@@Karma2Babylon is there a general relationship? say fast circuits or certain temperatures cause a certain kind of degradation
@@Marcushalberstram749 difficult to be precise about this because of the varying predictability of the Pirelli. I suppose it depends on how much or how little efficient downforce is put on the car. And with these ground effects cars the picture isn’t as black and white as it used to be.
@@stevepiccinnin1157 this is what I hate about the pirelli tire. Sure, there’s real application of skill to keeping them to a perfect (whatever that is) operating window but coupled with the heaviness of the current cars and the driver needing to drive by numbers and the absolute spectacle is gone.
Lewis did not have 3 offs, he was just conducting experiments.
Lewis when asked about Newey at Ferrari had that happy Smile..
Lewis didn't give himself the Ferrari seat. The heads at Ferrari did.
It's going to be an interesting race...
Hammy thinks he's the only one on the track
What a prima donna 🙄
Fred Vasseur continues to deliver exactly what he said he would. Consistent, steady improvements race after race.
everything perfect, except for letting Carlos go!, he has a great future, and has 10 plus years ahead of him.
@@ND-ud1qe That wasn't his decision
Sure he participated. But good for him is not his decision.
@@ND-ud1qeproblem with Carlos is he was inconsistent the last few years and was slower more times than he was quick, it’s only since he lost his seat has he lifted his game and I’m not suggesting he has been rubbish but he needed to show this kind of driving last year, Ferrari have his data to compare to Charles so have a better insight into his driving than we do
Understood, however Carlos is young and clearly developing his career with potentially many uprising years ahead of him. It was in my humble opinion a precipitated and costly decision. Good for Hamilton who got a 2 year contract at the end of his career. The interesting thing is that this might open a position for Verstappen in 2 years to have another run at Ferrari, as he still would be 29 years old in 3 years.
Difference between Yuki and Daniel was just frightening.
As track evolution develops, and the cooler and varying track temps unfold on Sunday, I think the track will come TO RedBull and the traction shenanigans will disappear. Also, I think any rear traction issues should use a ride height adjustment rather than too much rear wing like They did in Miami. We won't really know until aftern FP3 where to "land" the setup for quali. If anything They might just take little bit of bite out of the nose knowing that Sunday is going to be cooler.
best f1 channel
By far
Peter always has a great insiders perspective, such long-term experience and well-founded opinions, seasoned with a pinch of salt. We're lucky he shares them!
Any thoughts about the effects of not having Newey on the wall?
Best analysis as ever. Great work.
Please God let Ferrari be competitive in the race, please 🙏
I have noticed over the years, not just F1, that the weather keeps track condition ever changing at Imola. Probably like us humans just getting sensitive and temperamental to the weather as it gets up there in years.
Only time he does not make sense is when he is talking about Lewis Hamilton..
So when does your f1tv contract start?
So good to see gravel traps. They're meant to be the best drivers in the world - keep it on the grey bits!
youre the only f1 analyst i see talking about straight line speed to the extent that you do, which is interesting.
but also, you just go by top speed, which is only half the story.
top speed with and without drs, very important.
how quickly do you get up to top speed? even more important.
but never a mention of it, why?
Finallyyyy
As in... Been waiting 😅
Thank you again Peter, professional and to the point.
I would like a complete blue car. At least once a year!
Absolutely right, they know what the future likely holds for Lewis. Their history racing against him likely played a part in how they reacted as well.
In other news, the Red Bulls are over half a second off the pace in FP2, nice! 👍
Thats a dumb take from you and Peter doesn't make any sense at all lol.

Dear Peter, we have an amusement park in the Netherlands called the Efteling, it is an amusement park that is about fairy tales, you should apply there, because you are a fantastic fairy tale storyteller, good luck😂😂😂😂
This was the best commentary I’ve seen in my life pure and honest appreciate it champ all the way from SA
IFF Ferrari and McLaren have really closed the gap, then Checo's role is going to be crucial in the WDC/WCC. Looking at history, Max won't be able to rely on his team mate too much other than a AD21 rerun, which I somehow think Checo won't do or pull off again. So, even though many people have said it for the last 2 years, WITHOUT any evidence whatsoever, NOW (as we actually see evidence that checks out), we actually might have a battle on our hands.
Which eventually, at the end of the day/season, Max is going to win. Just as he did in 21. With even more teams being close, instead of one driver (Lewis), the point distribution is going to be a lot different instead of swapping P1 and P2 every other race.
It's practice for goodness sake. It's not qualifying.
This channel is morning entertaining and engaging then watching F1 on the box, which I rarely do these days!
Is there a vibe that lewis knows something like he did when he went to mercedes flying about the ferrari move on the minds of the paddock
Yes it’s safe to say sir greatest gift is to read the room
Obviously Lewis can do no wrong
Thanks Mr Windsor. For me the F1 season starts now, at the first real race track 😎
Suzuka is real, as well as australia, from an european.
Suzuka is as real as a race track can get!
Max would have been pissed if it was literally anyone. Not just because it was lewis. He had a shocking day and he hates others at the best of times
True
A few drivers were getting in each other’s way out there. Lucky for them it’s only free practice.
Lando's bailed lap tho... 👀
ferrari and mclaren are on fire. if redbull can not figure it out tomorrow, then it will be a two way fight between ferrari and mclaren and maybe outside chance by Mercedes. still credits too leclerc and ferrari seems they really figured it out.
Yuki in his RB looks fast.!!!
I was going to lose my shit if he didn't mention Yuki. My god he can't get any respect.
@peter, on the long run chart, you Lewis running a lap of 20.9. On his 24th lap, he ran a 20.2.
Is the chart you’re showing an average?
Im glad you point that out cuz i watched the practice session and it wasn't adding up
This is a reality check for all fanboys that thought Max was invincible.... If the car don't work you can't extract all the performance whether you're Lewis or Max or Charles or anyone.
Undoubtedly, if the car doesn't perform to your liking, you can't extract the maximum. Max has always credited his car for his victories. Yes, driver makes a big difference, but it is largely the car.
I almost bought your story, until I saw qualifying today...
He first has to prove himself at Ferrari.... And Newey, he will enjoy his retirement....😊
Looks like Red Bull are already missing the influence and engineering input of Newey in setting up and using such a complex car..
