It’ll be difficult. Roma committed to playing 11 men in defense fairly early. They’re very happy to sit back and defend and close up all the spaces. That’s why Pulisic was stuck wide. It didn’t work but that’s why. Milan struggle with the low block because our best players play best when allowed to exploit space behind defenses. Adli was necessary. Giroud is ineffective because he can’t play as that anchor because there’s too many defenders around him. I really think Adli needs to start and dictate just like he was in the second half. Chukwueze and Pulisic should start together and risk the over-offensive structure in order to pick apart the minimal spaces in the attacking third.

All good points, gents. I thought also, the midfielders & back line, are looking to score the wonder goals, out the box. Someone pointed that most our goals are score within the box. Puli leads in out-of-the-box goals, but has scored in the box more. Midfielders should be looking for him & Lao cutting, 1-2, after getting the ball & not looking for the wonder strike as a first option. Also, I think Giroud could moved up to midfield area to help with the 1-2 passes. Just my 2 cents. I see a better game in 2nd leg from ACM. Teamwork!

Very painful match. We needed subs way earlier. Not a fan of the ref (the added time was a joke for all the epic flopping Roma was doing throughout the match-should have easily been 8 minutes added) but definitely not the reason Milan looked like they just rolled out of bed. Everyone was gassed from minute one. I cannot wrap my head around the decision making in the final third. Also, passing the ball back has gotten to comical levels with this team. My man Puli was so guilty of stopping transitions and passing back when creativity ran dry and giving Roma the time to get everyone but Lukaku behind the ball. It also shows how valuable Rafa is to chance creation when Pioli is like “okay, I’m going to need you to be more clinically depressed and a little less world class and to play with much less joy”. They need a little freedom. De Rossi saved Roma by unfettering the attacking players. It also needs to be said that Milan were so lucky to just concede the one goal-Roma missed some absolute sitters. I could go on for days. Lets hope leg 2 is a polar opposite performance.

Roma and De Rossi just outplayed Pioli, you could see every time when the ball was on Leao a roma player was close to him not giving him space to move, the midfield was non existent with a very slow and predictable nr 10 that was supposed to be Loftus and the tactics from Milan was just awful to watch always just go to the right flank and try to cross for Giroud, Tijjani was the only player that actually tried to test the roma goalkeeper. Also I think Calabria was a disaster today, I don’t know what you saw on him but everytime when Roma was attacking on his side I was nervous, Spinazzola passed Calabria like it was a 15 years old defender we need a quality RB and CB. To me Gabbia and Samu was the only good players.

Good points. Yeah, I thought our midfielders were making poor decisions & just needed to draw the defense out with some clinical passing. Every time they shot the ball from out of the box, I'd cringe. I was looking for more teamwork passing the ball & players cutting, ergo moving without the ball. If you count the number of times ACM has scored outside the box compared to in the box, there's no comparison. ACM are a better team, so let's show up in the 2nd leg! Kick some b**t!

As you mentioned, we can turn this situation around. Let's use the same attacking lineup that faced Lecce, with Pulisic at CAM and Chuk at RW, as he is in good form, and start Okafor as the striker instead. We should aim to match their performance in every department. Pioli's preference for Loftus suggests he could start as either CM or CDM due to his strong defensive abilities, which would bolster our defense. To achieve victory, Pioli needs to plan this well; I'm curious to see what this formation can do against a strong opponent with all their weapons on the field. This match will provide valuable insights before considering which formation to use against Inter or Juventus. Forza Milan!

Sometimes you need to look at the other team's tactics not just ours. It's not that we ignored the left flank, it's that Roma defended so much in that area, El Shaarawy played as a full back and ran back to cover the whole time. Celik and Cristante were there as soon as Leao touched the ball they were aggressive, and i know for sure, and I'm sure De Rossi knows even better that Rafa doesn't do well when pressure is applied to him, he grows and complains and that is a problem that they used against us. Pioli is at fault for choosing the team for sure, but the coach can do so much, the players were just not up to standard today, i think they underestimated Roma, with the same tactics when Chuku came on we took off. And saying that they had a decent game is for the public, no smart coach would criticize his team on tv, that doesn't inspire motivation ( just look at Mourinho in Roma), but I'm sure there were some flames in the dressing room. The thing i dislike the most is that in Italy even before this match there were talks about Milan winning the EL. That is a big big mistake to think that.

Yesterday the difference was in the tactics. De Rossi put effort in studying this game and took all the tactics decisions that made us not playing. They put El Sharaawy on the right, so he was attacking Theo and coming back to double up against Leao.
Pioli didn't do anything special for this game, the same team as usual, not even taking in consideration the condition of the player.
Chuwkueze is on fire and should have started from the beginning, when he came on the pitch you could see that. Also Adli radically changed the pace of the game and was very aggressive like a Gattuso of his prime(we need a leader in the midfield like was Tonali). Bennacer is a good player but is still far from his top condition so Adli deserve to play.
In general I am worried of this approach, like all the derby of the last years, this is clearly something mental that doesn't work and Pioli has not been able to work it out it in all these years.
Let's hope for the second leg, cause from 1 a 0 is easy to come back. But today's performance was one of the worse of the all season, considering the importance of the match. Really disappointed

The team relies way too much on 1v1 on the wings. I don't think Puli is a great 1v1 player, yet he is 9th in the league for successful dribbles (Leao is 3rd). They need more fluidity and link up play. The best play of the game came in the 8th minute, Pulisic pass to RLC, who flicked it to Reijnders for a shot that forced a save. More of that is needed - smart passing, good off-ball movement, quick combinations to unlock the low block. Less hero ball, more team play.

I have been trying NOT to join the Pioli hate-fan club, but I can no longer ignore what appears to be very strange tactics and player instructions. Very strange. HOW can you allow players like Reingders or others who have particularly poor, inaccurate shooting ability to take SO MANY shots on goal in one game??? Why doesn't the team have a tactical "pre-set play" that allows them to Christian into open position to take those shots?? One of my longtime complaints of Christian has been that as accurate as his shot is, he should be more selfish and shooting more often. Yes, some of those would not be successful, but his effort would be far better than some of the long-range, weak shots that went RIGHT at the Roam keeper yesterday. That was horribly painful to watch. Shot after shot--right to the keeper. I thought we were watching a coach warming up his goalkeeper?!

I disagree I think Calabria and Bennacer lack close control with the exception of an occasional good pass. I prefer Florenzi over Calabria all day. Calabria has heart though. Bennacer always throws the rythmn of an attack off, he ocassionally will make a good pass but seems more of a little bulldog destroyer. It was frustrating to see Calabria take up the lanes and spaces today especially when his touch was nearly always off. I would have preferred Chukweuze and Okafor come on in earlier than the what they did and replaced RLC and Giroud. Okafor , Chuk, Pulisic and Leaõ are all faster , more agile and have the touch and mobility to link up and cause problems late. That never should have been a Goal lol Bunker Bunker Bunker. That said Milan have everything to play for in the second leg. 👍

I knew this was going to happen, Roma is in red hot form and they are are changed team. Milan set piece defending has been just bad doesn't matter it was a potential offside. Pioli has done a bad Homework on Roma and the players took this game for granted. Don't know how Milan will turn it around in the second leg in olimpico, this team just messes it up in the big stage and in big moment. Sometimes Pulisic hugs the sideline sometimes he plays more central I believe those are the tactics by the coach, HOWEVER I expect Pulisic to beat the Roma defense no excuse for that. The whole team palyed horribly and I do not put it on Pioli. Our players were missing easy passes and not moving without the ball. Chuk and Adli showed love for the jersey and were brilliant. We were due for a loss, and we were due for a loss against Roma. I expected that, but not the way it happened. We had no aggression except for Gabbia. I predict a 3-0 win against them at the Olimpico. Leao is mad now, I think he will go crazy in the next game. I also expect an aggressive performance from my favorite player Theo. We have to thank him for what he has done, but he has reached his ceiling. The scudetto was a miracle, its the exception not the norm. There is a reason people compared that title to leicester's, there is a reason why pioli has been a journeyman coach all of his career. Yet milan fans are okay with him staying for next season and possibly renewing. Where is the ambition?
