And how much should you spend on them?
In this video, I put a cheap £40 pair of rugby boots up against an expensive £200 pair through a series of challenges to see which comes out on top!
We'll be testing for speed, footwork, movement, tackling, kicking, as well as the overall look and feel of the boots. After rating both out of 10, I'll recommend which I think is best for you.

My 14 year old son has started wearing Puma Finesse as are laceless boots. He previously had mid price Kooga and Adidas rugby boots which didn't last a season as front leather part just peeled away.

Canterbury, my rugby club, gave me them for free
I find that the cheap boots are good,but they can soon split where the base plate/sole starts to split where it joins the leather
ye I agree, as a first time wearing them I feel they are great but like mentioned in the video, when the winter weather comes, I feel they will get very heavy and worn down quickly. which boots do you wear? and at which price point?

I played in the wet and muddy conditions of the Pacific Northwest of the US for 9 years. The best thing I ever did was get two pairs of boots and rotate them out. One pair of boots didn’t have enough time to dry out between Tuesday, Thursday practices and Saturday game day. Once I had a second pair to rotate out, those two pair lasted me for years and were in great shape. As opposed to the usual with a single pair that would break down in a year or two, regardless of price.
yes great call, I use to do the same, I had 2 pairs of studs, one for training one for game, the exact same boots. but like you said they lasted easily all season, when 4g pitches came in I had to do the same with moulds too. how did you manage the hard and muddy pitches?
Very good video. I'd like you to add some comparative testing using the boots to push in ruck / maul. I assume for an scrum you need a very specific boots for 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows.
Hi, thanks for the comment. Ye I agree, thinking about it this morning about how grassroots teams play on a wide variety of surfaces too, where pro players play on 4G or Nice grass surfaces. Grass roots are playing on all sorts so I think making a video on different surfaces would be good and also bringing in scrum pushing ect
The thing I found is if you wait until the off-season and are OK with last seasons design / the dodgy colour ones and you hunt around you can often find the £200 boot for £100 and £100 boots for £50 !
ye thats a great call, you do have dodgy colours like lime green ha but you cant beat the price. what boots do you normally buy ?

I used to buy a cheap pair of boots at the beginning of the pre season, every year, and they'd be torn up by the end of the season.
My brother had a pair of Adidas Kangaroo leather, top of the food chain boots that he was going to play soccer in but never did. I snagged them one year and wore them for about 5 years. They were infinitely better when it rained too.
spending that much more makes a huge difference, again you don't need to spend 200 but you can great great boots for 80-100. do you still play rugby ?
Best decision I ever made with rugby (especially as an outside back) was to bite the bullet and buy some more expensive boots. Adidas Predator Malice SG (around £150) are my personal preference, they’re by far the most comfortable I’ve tried, lightweight, and allow for good traction, speed and direction change on all types of ground!
ye I agree, investing in a good pair of boots makes a huge difference, again you dont need to buy the £200+ boots, like you mentioned Adidas £150 are perfect. you can get good £100 boots too that do a great job for the muddy. Where do you play? UK or elsewhere? as pitches in the UK can differ so much, and what do you wear on 4g pitches?
To save boots and get longer use i have boots for
Training
Touch rugby (moulds)
And specific scrum studs for the scrums
love that lewis, I did the same, boots for muddy and boots for hard/4g pitches. what boots do you wear for them all? are they all the same brands?
@TheRugbyTrainerTV I have Adidas boots for training, kooga/Adidas for match days and Nike ones for touch, and then a spare pair, which are kooga

yes the studs are different as in its outline
depends on your position - for backs football boots work great, forwards have sometimes more specific needs for „real rugby boots“
ye I feel like football boots are shorter studs ( mouldies) but I always use to wear football boot to play rugby, Mizuno boots are probably the best rugby boots.
spot on! especially front rowers, need longed studs for scrums. Which boots do/did you wear?

Last season I bought my son a pair of KOOGA Power SG Rugby Boots, he plays tight head prop. By mid season the soles had separated from the boot. Very poor quality boots. This season I bought him a pair of Adidas KAKARI boots. Much more expensive but so much better quality than the KOOGA boots. So far showing very few signs of wear and tear.
ye Adidas boots seem to last a while, especially the leather boots. are the Adidas boots the ankle high ones?
@@TheRugbyTrainerTV The Adidas KAKARI boots have a synthetic upper and standard ankle, he likes 8 studs for scrummaging. They've held up well considering how soft the ground has been with all the rain we've had this season.

@TheRugbyTrainerTV yea I have used Canterbury but I think that the koogas help more with pushing in the scrum
