How To Tune Your Bass (Beginner Bass Basics)

The first step to being able to tune your bass is to understand the basics of the musical alphabet. I'll walk you through that in this video so you know how to read your tuner.
Then I'll talk over your options for getting in tune. If you're a beginner, the best way to tune is with a tuner. Tuning by ear isn't reliable unless you're good at it.
There are three different options for tuning with a tuner, so I'll walk you through the pros and cons of each.
Finally, I'll demonstrate tuning with a clip-on tuner, so you can see what kind of adjustments you need to make to tune your own bass.

i have sooo much to learn as i've been a drummer and still am for 20 plus years and always wanted to learn bass for about half that time. Just borrowed a bass from a friend who hasnt played in a long time
Thanks for the vid Josh. I got my first guitar/bass (lefty - Artist Guitar PB2L LH Black) today and this has been a great help for me. I used the Artist TN-50 clip-on tuner and did an OK job. I tried with my phone but that was off compared to the clip-on. I plugged the bass via a "guitar to USB cable" straight into a docking station (sorta direct) and then tuned it with the GTune VST in Bitwig Studio. Next stop, ear!
I also shared this video with my daughter who is starting back on electric guitar after 15 years. She was using her phone and was getting frustrated with the varying tuning. Her daughter grabbed the guitar on day one and tuned it by ear. Violin lessons paid off for her :D

Great videos you have out there!! I'm toying with the idea of buying a used Bass and playing around with it. Kind of got "the bug" after attending a Little River Band concert several years ago and being quite close to the Bassist. I played a Fender Strat "back in the day" (OK, the 70's) but I find myself gravitating to the Bass now. Can't stop Air Guitar-ing to Floyd, Zeppelin, etc!! At my age, I know I'll never be a pro but maybe I can just go to my "safe space" and not drive the wife completely crazy!!
Man, that's a gorgeous bass. I own a wide range of guitars from a $100 Epi to a $2K Gibson, but I'm stuck with just a Squire SS Jaguar PJ bass. Though, it's really well built, it seems. Not even a sharp fret. But, now you'll have me looking around for something a tad nicer.

I've just bought my first ever bass (Squier PJ) and i've just come to realise my endless fret buzz may be to do with bridge set up and action height - they're all over the place like a toddler making a lego tower! I find your videos the best, most informative and non-patronising and non-showyoffy online so i wondered if you had a video already created on addressing this issue? Also, if you have to move the e string a lot, best to recheck the others, and that thick string can change the whole tension of the neck.

how do I find a tuner that's not a pedal? I went to electronics websites and only found clip-on and pedal tuners. I guess the pedals would count as plug-in but where else could i find one?

Hey Fred, it's a KLIQ Ubertuner, but I actually don't recommend them, they're pretty slow and inaccurate for bass compared to other ones I've tried more recently. We'll have a whole pile of clip-on and plug-in tuner reviews coming out some time soon. In the mean time, I have to recommend the TC Electronic Polytune/Unitune Clip over all others for bass, way better tracking/accuracy/speed than anything else I've seen.

where did you get that cyruss bass// i look for 35 inch 4 string //left hand but suppose they intend to do it in 2021 but nothing was of it now i herd 2022,, but i feel if ,,still it s not going to be a one of cheapest neck thru non asia/korea but in usa /uk/ or japan range quality with reinforcemant in neck neck thru 35 inch and lol was under 2000 doll or marks or eu i donno //but this is no classic model //i remember oval inlays a other head design sharper ,,horns ,, or was that on rudy sarzo model alone i feel this is later than i look for cyrus / i look 1988to 93 period b i think

How do I tune my bass 1/2 step down using a tuner in standard? Does -10 hertz go down a semitone? I really need to know if you know the answer please tell me.
Use a chromatic tuner and tune to EbAbDbGb! (or D#G#C#F#, whatever the tuner defaults to)
Thank you. I just bought a new cheap bass guitar but I think my strings are way too high up the fretboard. Also from the time I tune my G string, my E string is already not in tune aymore... Just can't play it... So sad
Yikes, sounds like your bass has some issues! Probably needs a setup at the very least, you can learn how to do a basic one yourself on CZcams since we're all stuck at home for now!

Some tuners display the string numbers.
Yeah, I don't recommend those, chromatic tuners are more useful and better to train your brain to think about notes and not string numbers.
and also, is it 440hz for bass guitars in general ? you don't use 444hz..
Hey Kya, the 440Hz standard is used on all instruments, otherwise we wouldn't sound in tune with each other. 😁

symphonic orchestras tune higher ( but the same reference is used inside the orchestra ) For example : " The San Francisco Symphony (reportedly) tunes to 441 or 442 Hz
The Boston Symphony Orchestra (reportedly) tunes to 444 Hz
The New York Philharmonic (reportedly) tunes to 443 Hz
and The Berlin Philharmonic (reportedly) tunes to 445 Hz"

I always find the system of why the notes are that way bewildering. Like learning spellings was at one stage I guess.
