Learning your bass fretboard notes doesnât have to be overwhelming. In 20 minutes, youâll know all the notes you need to make $$$.
Are you struggling to find the notes on your fretboard? It's probably because you're trying to learn too much at once.
Thatâs why in this video weâre focusing on âThe Money Notesâ - the most commonly played notes on the neck. (that actually get us bass players paid :P)
Iâll take you through 4 steps to get you from zero neck knowledge to having a handle on enough bass fretboard notes to survive a jam session.
In Step 1 we start at the beginning with the musical alphabet. Iâll walk you through the basics in detail, including how sharps and flats work, and the two spots to watch out for in the alphabet that often trip beginners up.
Yes, itâs music theory, but itâs not that scary, I promise. And you REALLY need to know this stuff - even pro musicians who âdonât know theoryâ use the musical alphabet to communicate.
Step 2 is where we start applying the musical alphabet to the bass fretboard. You canât find anything if you donât know your open strings, so I talk you through standard bass tuning and my favorite (silly) mnemonic device for remembering the string names.
Steps 3 and 4 get really juicy - we get started with memorizing the Money Notes, which means being able to quickly find any of the notes in the musical alphabet on your bass when someone calls them out to you at a jam.
Then weâll put it all together and get ready to jam with a guitar player. You get to use your new neck knowledge to find the notes that I call out to you in our jam session.

I'm actually going to cry. After months of not understanding what notes and sharp + flats are I've finally found a video that teaches me step by step. This is so amazing thank you, you're an amazing teacher
He really is!!!
Not to be philosophical but I really think the way he teaches taps into our childhood way of learning in school. Which process the information faster. I to finally learned the notes and the freeboard lol. Good luck in your playing
Same here. I finally feel like Iâm getting somewhere. Thank you!

At 70 and dyslexic always wanted to be a musician, failed at numerous attempts through my life.
Now thanks to you and your way of teaching bass in a way that I can comprehend. Being retired I have plenty of time to practice and I did it I am a bassist, with 350 songs in my library that I can play along with, having the best time of my life on my number one on my bucket list.
Dyslectic wannabe musician here as well... let's untie!! đ
350 songs? Wow! Well done. I am 67, and I started ten weeks ago. Maybe I have two songs. But lots of fun.

Colin Dyer Haha! Just bought a starter bass this week. Watching a few videos before it comes in to get a general idea on how to start playing :)
... even Nickelback? Are you serious? Nice message, by the way.
I must have watched half a dozen videos about Bass Fretboard Notes ... and this is the *only* one that made me *really* understand the layout (the logic behind it), literally within seconds.
No unnecessary information, no off-topic blabla, the subject presented in an easy-to-understand and entertaining manner.
Some people just have a knack for teaching.
Thanks, Josh, that was awesome!
2 years later but i agree. Iâm loving this dudeâs personality, teaching methods and his channel. As a psych major i also appreciate the connections he makes with those theories as well.
i love how this is explained, theres no standard set and no "common sense" knowledge, it's just completely from the beginning, explained for people with no knowledge at all so far and that makes it not only very understandable but also very fun to watch and learn from
This is literally the most helpful bass lesson on youtube, and he's kinda funny too Thank you for this !!!!!

Josh, I knew all this literally before you were born, yet you somehow made it fresh and engaging, and had me playing along. I spent money on another guy's course because his content impressed me--but he's boring, which makes it hard to stay with it. Viewers, don't make the same mistake. If you get bored easily, and have a hard time staying with things, Josh can help take you from beginner to badass. (No, he didn't pay me.)
Josh has always been one of the best bass teachers on CZcams. He's has a fun and engaging way of conveying his lesson material; - I've enjoyed watching him go from strength to strength, lessons just get better & better!
Josh, I'm new to your lessons (being a very beginner at bass) and in minutes you cleared up so much for me. I've tried reading bass books, listened to other You Tube guys, but they all left me fuzzy. Thnx
Same boat, and I completely agree with you about Josh's teaching style. Thanks Josh!
I feel the same. Not to bragg, but I am a Stanford who's who of music was inducted into Stanford's who's who black book 2 years in a row 2012 & 2013 there is plenty more but I will spare you the rest. Anyway this young man has provided a way of learning that is very fun and exciting...not that I needed to learn this again but it never hurts brush up, maybe see things in a different way. I love it great job.
Sugar Rey Robinson (former heavyweight champion of the world) once told me all he knew about music theory, is you better C sharp before you B flat.
Decided to learn bass to combat the quarantine brain fuzzies. This has been the best instructional video Iâve seen - thanks!! đž
Glad it helped Kat!
MAN! Relating the bass to the piano keys was a genius move and makes sooo much sense! Itâs taken away the âjust memorizeâ approach and conceptualizes everything. đŻ
This is the peak of communication for Bass teaching. I really look forward to watching these, Josh.
Thank you Stu! That's great to hear, always appreciate the feedback. đ
"I'm not earning any money right now" LOL : )
Haha, ain't it the truth. Thanks for watching Davey, I love your playing!
Wow I didnât expect to see you here! I just started playing about three weeks ago and I love your channel.
it's crazy how patient you are to take this amount of time to explain these concepts : THANK YOU
I learned english and chord notes at the same time, gracias buddy.
I just learned more from you in five mins than I learned in 4 years. Thank you very much
You're welcome Kennylee, glad I could help!
Pausing this at the 8:13 mark because I'm literally in awe. Sometimes you just have to get someone to explain something a certain way and it all clicks. You really made me feel like I just solved a complicated math problem that I haven't been able to solve for years. Not sure where I go from here but when someone says C# I'll actually know where the heck they want me to play instead of just doing it by ear.
Awesome, nice lightbulb moment!
As someone who already knows theory, but just doesnât know where the notes are on the bass, this guy is my saviour!! đđđ
Way back in high school my guitar teacher was teaching us how to play acoustic guitar and she taught us to think of it this way to memorize the strings: EADGBE âEddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddieâ. That is STILL stuck in my head 10 years later.
Man, I just discovered you. I played bass for 20 years, 13 of them professionally -7 years that I played last time- and now that my kids are showing interest in music, I have no idea how to approach teaching them, BUT here you are! You are amazing at getting to the point in a fun and effective way! You got me hooked for the entire video. Very well done, man!
Thanks Miguel!

You are the FIRST person who has successfully got me to understand the layout of the scales on a keyboard! I'm so thrilled and looking forward to learning bass guitar with your lessons! Seriously...I'm almost in tears...I thought I was too old (52) and/or too dumb to ever learn this stuff.

My childhood doubts are cleared by this video. I got confidence now to learn base guitar. Thank you very much.

Thank you. As a beginner bass player and a former teacher of 35 years, I appreciate the content and structure of your lessons. I played my first song, High and Dry, with you. It is part of my warm up.
I've been playing bass for 2+ years but i found it impossible to learn chords so i stuck to tabs and this saved me! thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Great job Josh. I was "fretting" about it until you explained it. Job well done!!! đđđ

youâre a wonderful teacher ... you helped me overcome so much of the confusion iâve had trying to learn on my own
Dude Iâve been playing bass for 7 years and I thought learning the chords would be hard and you made them feel so easy to learn, you literally made me mad about the last 7 years of my life
Glad it was easy to learn, sorry to make you full of regret. đ
In my beginner book it had a little phrase called âBig Cats Eat Fishâ to remember that there was no flat or sharp notes between B,C & E,F. Helped me immensely!
Right on Josh! Thank you for these videos. We can tell you have a passion for teaching.đđ
Really understanding octaves and other intervals helped me see the pattern clearer.
You are seriously blowing my mind. I just bought a bass during Black Friday and just went with tabs (where it shows numbers and stuff). I looked at a few things for beginners, but this is the first one where literally everything made sense to me. You are making it so easy on this video, and I have to thank you for it. Thanks!
You're welcome Ceielo!
I bought a Bass 5 years ago and I've paid for Bass lessons...After watching this video, in less than 20 minutes, I've learnt and understood from you for free, what I've not learnt in 5 years of paying for classes. This is by far the best Bass lessons on the WWW :)

This helped me so much in memorizing notes! Thank you Josh, you're literally the best bass teacher on youtube.
EXCELLENT intro lesson! Thank you Josh!
Josh, just wanted to take the time to say that I really appreciate vids like this on youtube. Iâve been playing bass for almost 30 years. I know this theory almost too well to be able to explain it clearly to a student. Not sure that even makes sense? I am currently teaching the next generation...my son how to play.
Your tutorial makes it very easy to understand the fundamentals and breaks it down in a simple and clean methodology for finding root notes, memorizing how sharp/ flat works and when and how to play these notes.
Very well done! Inside of just 20 mins you have found a way to take what took me many lessons of non-usable theory and turned it into getting right to a jam session. Exactly WHAT EVERYONE wants to do. Jam! Thanks!
Thank you Joe!
Youâre an amaZING TEACHER THANK YOU SO MUCH ! Iâve been playing bass for 4 years but I never had enough money for lessons so Iâve just been playing by ear never truly knowing the notes I was playing so thank you!
You're welcome AJ!
This is really helpful. I'm getting back into playing bass again after 20+ years and this is the exact refresher I needed before attempting things I've only heard and never played like a walking bass line. Never too late to learn. Great job.
This literally blew my mind. Seeing how you laid it all out and explained the bass compared to piano keys made this all make much more sense! Thank you so much đđŒ
I've been playing bass for over a year and a half but because I'm self taught I've been too lazy to teach myself anything other than how to play basslines! This has been super helpful and easy to follow, I finally feel like a real musician! Thank you!!

Ha, fair.
Most of Money is played in the 'money' zone...

Super simple and clear! You nailed in 20 minutes what my first bass teacher took about 4 weeks to instill in me :)
Josh, you are one of the best bass instructors here that actually teaches. Great job and you have that gift. Keep it up.
Genuinely helpful. Joining a jazz band and having never played bass before or played with others, this is enough to get me through a few sessions before I fully dive in.

No matter what level you are, there's always a new discovery going back to basics. You're an Excellent Teacher. I really appreciate how easy and enjoyable you make the Wonderful Bass to understand. Thank you!đŠ
About 20 years ago, I had a motorcycle accident. After I healed up a bit, I figured playing a Bass would be good PT for my formerly broken hand. It worked great for my hand, for my playing, not so much. About a year later, my son "loaned" my Bass to a friend of his, and I haven't seen it since. Now that I'm retired, I got bit by the Bass Bug again. On a whim, I bought a used one online, sight unseen for $50, (identical to the "E-bay" Bass Josh played in his 5 cheap Bass Guitar video). Thanks to Josh, I've learned more about music and playing Bass Guitar in the past week than I ever have before. Now I'm shopping around for a good used J Bass - something that actually has a name brand on it...
Thank-you Josh, you are the BEST! You make this easy to understand, entertaining, and most of all, FUN!
I know this is an old(ish) video, but if you see this I just want to say that you're an amazing teacher. You made the fret notes so incredibly easy that's it's amazing. Well done and thank you!
You're welcome!
I was 14 when I had my first bass lesson (48 years ago!). The teacher told me, âDonât memorize the fretboard, FEEL it.â I canât tell you how much that stunted my progress as a bass player. And how embarrassing it was whenI first tried jamming with others! Your lessons are, hands down, the easiest on-ramp to playing the bass. Genius really. Even at my ripe age Iâm learning a ton. Keep it up.
monumentally helpful. and you broke it down super easy to understand. Your a life saver.
This is exactly what I needed! Thanks Josh!
