I’m gonna show you some fun beginner bass riffs that you don’t stand a CHANCE of f***ing up. I dare you.
The first tune from the Talking Heads will get you started with a recognizable riff you can play even if you just started. (thanks Tina Weymouth)
And I'll show how to get your notes short and tight like Tina's with some left hand muting, which is an important skill for bass playing in any style.
Next up is a classic single from Green Day, with beginner-friendly riffage supplied by Mike Dirnt.
If you don't already know about how important "chugging" is for bass players, this is a good beginner bass riff for you. Once you start chugging, you’ll be doing it happily for years.
Then it's time for some freaking epic bass slides on an old Lou Reed song (which you might know best as a Tribe Called Quest sample).
I’ll show you the secret to being able to do massive slides without getting lost. Because slides only sound good when you end up in the right place at the end. :P

@Bass Buzz Thank you for making this! My bf is a beast on upright jazz bass, he always has gigs, ppl love him. He got me such a nice cute bass for my birthday back in March, it's a mint-colored SX vintage series. I bought a stand so it will stare at me and beg to be played, and it has done so for a few months to no avail. It's daunting and I felt very discouraged with the added pressure of it being a lovely gift. He got me a cool strap and put tape-wounds on it to motivate me recently. I am still shy to practice when he is around, despite him being a kind & patient teacher. Having your lesson while he's gone is helping a lot! I played flute for a year in jr high, then percussion for 2 years, then dance classes for 4 years. I still feel like I'm more suited to dancing than playing, my sisters and I have always danced, whereas my bf has a very hard time letting loose for it haha. With your help I'm doing my best to give it another go! Plus I love the Talking Heads so you won me over at the start haha. Gah long comment BUT SERIOUSLY thank you SO MUCH! I hope teaching music has brightened your life with abundance & joy. You seem genuinely happy to do so

This lesson is absolutely awesome and covers so much technique with simple examples. Just one simple example, that lift but keep muting with the left hand is so important to bass playing. Every time I lift up my fretting hand like he said to do on Psycho Killer, the note ends with a very obvious buzz. Is this a problem with my technique or the bass’s action or something else? If it’s a technique problem, what can I do to fix it?

Another great one is blitzkrieg bop, you go 4 times on the fifth E fret, then once 5th E fret and lastly the 7th fret on the A string.

Very nice! I'm a life-long guitarist, but I recently started playing bass so I could have it on my recordings. I could not find a bassist to play. We even recorded a couple albums like Justice. But I love bass. I wanted to play bass before guitar. It just happened to work out that my parents decided guitar not bass.
I just got a P bass and I had it set up in B flat. I'm loving the added frequencies on my recordings! Now I just have to get some decent technique going with the right hand. This lesson was so helpful for me. Thank you for recording it and sharing. It gave me several great jumping off points.

Tina Weymouth is amazing to learn from like Sting. She actually played the A strings open with her index or something before going down to 3rd fret G with her thumb (on Psychokiller). She had her own way of doing things. But I really adore her as a bassist.
But yes doing the 5th fret works. But if you wanna try her awkward way... Watch her live.
Also Josh if you don't have an entire episode dedicated to Tina, I'd suggest it. 4:47

So dude, I'm not sure if people actually follow their videos after being uploaded and then 3 years after there is this guy to comment, but regardless I have to say it and yeah I know how I sound :D :D
You mentioned in one of your videos that you don't do "fake stuff" as other "youtubers" and I'm going to continue that thread. Not just that, but your explanation how to play and how to approach to what person is doing/playing is brilliant, than you are explaining physical movements, and what happens in that instant second, which for some of beginners is crucial!!!!! Know this coming from an 30 and more years old man, there is a big difference in people teaching and in people who are thinking that they teach yet they are just showing what they know!!! You are not that second one :) Thanks for that!!! Cheerio!!!
