A lot of guys on the internet know how to play bass very well but can't teach. This guy is the best I've seen in terms of teaching the bass for beginners.
Never played bass guitar before I I'm getting older. I've got a lot of free time. I want to learn how to play this instrument. I'm gonna give it a shot. Let's see if you can teach an old dog new tricks.
I'm gonna give it a year. I should learn something by then. Just bought me a used bass guitar wish me luck
@joetorre846 good luck mate hope you love it. If you don't mind me asking, what bass did you get?
@bedroxzbass4706 I bought a AUSTIN BASS GUITAR SOMETHING CHEAP JUST TO LEARN ON
@@joetorre846how’s it going with your bass?
Thank you for sharing!! Great teacher
I Am 71 years old , and I bought a bass today. Thank you for your wonderful work.
Congratulations Sam!! A new bass is an inspiring thing.
I bought mine yesterday and I am 71‼️👏
Sam, Ruthie from Sumter SC and just got mine Wednesday and had a good time learning yesterday. I am the 71 yr old too‼️We’ve got this.
This is the clearest, most concise and enjoyable bass tutorial I have ever watched. Most bassists don't seem to understand the simple fact that guitar players, in particular, don't see the fret board the same way. Thanks, Steve!
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you watching.
Your teaching is very detail, tnx
Tnx Steve ur a good teacher on the basics and so clear
You're welcome!
I agree man ty so much Steve.
This bloke is bloody good teacher. I paid for about 2 classes but this bloke is spot on. And the good thing it's free. This bloke is a bloody legend
Not even 5 mins into this video and I’m already moving so much smoother on my axe. 10/10 video dude love how simple you made it seem!
That's great brother. Glad the video helped.
Wow - my mind is blown. That first lesson was laid out so clear and clean with zero fluff and such straightforwardness! I love your teaching style! I am so glad I came across your video. Thank you for sharing it on youtube. I am super excited to practice again!
Glad to hear you're motivated to practice! That leads to improvement.
FINALLY!!!! A teacher that teaches you exactly what you need to know immediately. My goodness!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
This made five years of learning bass make sense in 30 minutes.
Great to hear that!
My god finally someone who knows how to simplify things. I just learned/understand 1000% more than I knew before I watched this!!!
Glad to hear it helped!
@@stevekonbass It certainly did. Thank you sir!!
A friend will receive this video as he wants to learn to play the Bass. Thank you for the clear and simple beginner steps offered.
Thanks for passing it along William.
Wow that really helped a lot 👍
I've watched, read, and listened to so many people trying to explain what you explained in this video - for years and years and years. I never understood what it was they were saying until you spelled things out in this extremely informative video. I feel like I FINALLY understand some basics of guitar that I never thought I ever would. Thank you!! Really. Thank you :)
That is awesome to hear Alary. Thanks for letting me know. Very glad the video was a help to you.
Exactly!
Same here!❤
Right? Guitar players start spouting chord names at you, and you're like HUH? They are terrible at explaining what this video explains.
You'll have fun with the chords video I did. Once you start playing chords a whole new world of creativity will open up for you on bass: czcams.com/video/1mK1wTjnFjA/video.html
At last someone who can take the time to explain 'how to' in simple language and diagrams . I can't wait to get tuned up and playing my first bass guitar. Thanks Steve, keep up the good work.
You are welcome!
I learned more from this 30 minute video than I've learned from a year of trying to figure it all out. Thank you SO much!!
You're welcome. Glad to hear it helped.
Excellent communicator + Clear example = Great Instructor
Great to hear that Gary, thanks.
This channel has enabled me to play bass in just a month, whenever I feel I don't understand something...I just come back here.thanks man you made it easy
Awesome to hear James! Keep it up!
I'm going to repeat what everyone is saying but this is by far one of the best beginner bass overviews I have ever watched. I have had a bass for a long time, with no time. Decided to pick it up after 15 years or more and get alittle more serious. This video definitely helped alot. Thank you.
Glad to hear that. Keep playin'.
Been playing what I refer to as very "basic" bass since 1979. Never really go much better. 7 minutes into this video and I already know more than I did before I began watching. This is great stuff.
As a piano player since childhood (for leisure), having now just started trying to learn to play bass I knew the chord/triads music theory, even the chord progressions (which surprised me, since it has been YEARS since I actively studied this stuff!) - this video was super-helpful in transitioning that understanding to the bass fretboard, as well as being a useful reminder of the basics of music theory. Great stuff, Steve, thanks!!!
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy playing bass.
@@stevekonbasshow can i avail the book which you mentioned?
That book was just blank and my teacher would write in the lesson we did each week.
As a beginner I’ve watched thousands of bass training videos, but none are as straight forward and simply put as this. Thanks for making my life a little easier!
Glad to hear it and glad to hear so many people are taking up bass.
Same to me... All i know is 2 string open E n open A note... But for thirt string i never know how to use it😅
This is one of the clearer videos on youtube. I appreciate how it's just the lecture and no bullshit.
All bass players are grateful.Thank you mr Steve!
I'm grateful that they are watching. Thanks!
Steve,
51 years old and have struggled with learning music on guitar & bass for several years. You just nailed understanding all the information.
Best teaching I have ever experienced sir. Thank you Brother!!!
That's great to hear James! Glad I could help.
I'm 59, "comming back" (never been a great bassist) trying to get a few grooves before I check out... this man knows how to teach... (hey I'm a teacher too) 😋Keep at it! "Will buy coffee soon"...
Same here, only that I am 57 yers old. I play also drums, which is my main instrument. Greetings from Finland. And Thank you Steve very very much.
You're welcome Janne and "Hello Finland!"
The comments I've read say it all. I've been trying to come to grips with the bass. In 30 minutes you have unlocked many of my stumbling blocks.THANK YOU
That's great to hear Warren!
Very good I love your lessons
Thanks Theodore.
I'm on day 3 of learning bass for the first time ever, my mind is blown by how well I actually understood this, you worded everything so well and you broke it down in such an easy to grasp way. I am truly thankful for this video, thank you!
Awesome! I'm glad I presented it in a way that made sense to you. Hope you enjoy playing!
Couldn't say it better myself!!! 👍👍👍
You're lucky to have discovered this so quickly!!

My comment exactly, perfect timing ,start fresh with NO BAD HOBBITS, 😄
And to have it explained,,and not just recited,,.
To be able to understand from the beginning..
Stay with it.
For stating the obvious one more time: this is the best beginners lesson I´ve seen. As a complete beginner, I thank you for the enlightenment.
Thanks Aurora, I appreciate it. It's great to hear from people that are picking up the bass and starting to learn. Thanks for watching and please share the video.
This is the best instructor I have ever come across when it comes bass guitar lessons. Thanks Steve
Thank you!
I don't know English very well, I am from Ukraine, but thanks to the fact that you write everything on the board, I understood everything. Your lessons are great. Thank you very much.
Your English looks good to me. Glad the lesson was a help. "Hello Ukraine!" Stay safe and the best in the New Year.
First 8 minutes have cleared up my understanding of the fretboard and I've been dabbling with guitar and bass for nearly 40 years!
Holy crap after years of playing I finally find a lesson that teaches me the "why" of what I'm doing. I remember back when I was first starting off, my teacher would just have me memorize everything without actually explaining it in a way I could actually understand what is going on.
Thanks for explaining this "fundamental basic stuff"! Now I start to connect the dots.
I think this is the best video I've seen explaining this stuff.
Thank you! Glad the video shed some light on theory for you.
I agree. He is so organized in his explanation.
Exactly! I needed to see how to connect the dots. Now, I feel like I'm getting somewhere.
I too agree as an absolute beginner I have learned a lot from his tutorials very simple and easy to follow.
I grew up with violing, cello, then bass, playing classic or Orchestra music, so by the time I got into jazz & rock music, all I knew was basic note-playing, and improvisation or solos were never done, until I tried out for the 'famous' Ohio U. Jazz band. I quit music to concentrate on my double-major, but I still have my guitars.
Great teaching Steve. Have played strats for over 54 years, am 68 now, an old schoolfriend here in the UK has just picked up his first ever guitar - a Squier bass. I'm putting together some lesson plans for him, your video(s) are the only lessons I've found that hack it. Your students are lucky folks! Big thanks from out here.😊
Thank you!!
There are lots of guys know how to play bass, but teaching without boring is equal to being expert. You are doing it well Steve. Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
fantastic lesson. This is not easy stuff for beginners, you made it easy with your clear explanations.
This is where Steve shines!!! Making it all seem easier.
I know/ known this stuff . Somehow , it's part of me . But wow ... It's a whole other world when it is explained like this . My point : stick to the basics . It will make the other stuff easyer to understand .
This is the best base guitar teacher I have ever seen or heard. He simplifies it so well that anyone will learn from him lessons. I played bass guitar for over 10 years in live bands, and I have taught a few friends, but I could never explain it so well.
Steve's classes are in a league of their own. I like the way that in a mere 30 minutes goes from tuning to notes on the fret to patterns. Then unto chords on the guitar in relation to playing along with the bass to how to play chord progression, all in a nursery style way. I have learnt even the musical language of 145. He is the real Macoy.
I've gain much clarity on cord progressions. So much helpful.👍👍🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧
Great to hear Amalyn! If interested in another lesson on chords, I posted a new one: czcams.com/video/1mK1wTjnFjA/video.html
you are so great teacher I like your style, next day i start playing the Bass Guitar because of you, thank you so much
Hey that's great Gabi. Have fun with your journey!
I'm new to bass. Been playing guitar for years.. Great lessons probably one of the best videos. I came across so far.
This is what you call a proper bass lesson. No long intros, or sponsored by.... In fairness I am going to have to watch this a number of times before it sinks in, but the format is conducive to that, as you can skip using the whiteboard as a reference. Thanks for sharing.
So I have been trying to play bass for last 15 years.. I only wish someone would've shown me this when I started.. I can't believe it was this simple and effective 👏🏻 thank you so much!!
You are welcome! It's great to hear the lesson helped. Here is the playlist for all the lessons: czcams.com/play/PLsFosTB39eVBVllLkZP_RAIjNmviv8nYe.html Even if you don't go in depth with them and just casually watch, there will be times when you have that Ah Ha moment and realize how easy some things are. Happy playing!
@stevekonbass oh, I'm definitely going through all of them. If only this first lesson did so much impact, I can only imagine what the rest of them can do. I'm super stocked to learn more! Thank you so much.
I’m a long time player, but just wanted to say how much I love your lesson. You will encourage so many people to play, excellent job man. I was expecting another one of these self-impressed A-holes that give our chosen weapon a bad name, but damn, thank you, I’m blown away.
I appreciate that brother, really. I'm enjoying it as much as the gigging I've done.
😅😅😅w🎉🎉upigyy🎉i
This is great. You’re a natural teacher. Thank you.
You're welcome!
this is very clear, some people can play a little but the basic foundations to get you thinking and writing is not there to get serious, you have open the door to achieve this brilliantly.
Great to hear. Happy playing and writing!
You are just the best teacher. I almost gave up learning the bass but am lucky i came across you. Great job
From Kenya
I'm glad you found the video Mark and glad to hear it was helpful. Please share it with your musician friends. Keep rockin'!
You're a legend. After so long trying to understand how the bass work, I finally understand. So glad Ive found your lesson.
Glad to hear it! Thanks Jaco.
I have been playing bass for about 5 years and this lesson is by very far the best I have had. Outstanding!!
It's great to hear that Marc. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad to hear the video was useful for you.
Thank you Mr. Steve. I started out on bass in the 70s and only played by ear. I’m coming out of retirement and this class was so perfectly explained that my INTP personality with ADHD and OCD understood and stayed throughout your whole explanation. I’m a new fan.
You're welcome Michael. Glad to hear you stuck around for the whole video.
very clear and pragmatic, I loved that you use the white board. thank you very much!
Great lesson ! I've been noodling around for 2 years . I'm 62 and just found you made sense of what ive been struggling with . thank you !
You're welcome Chris. Glad to help.
Dude, this was the best explanatup of natural notes and all the majors and minors that I've heard. As a beginner bass player, I really appreciate it. Thank you
You're welcome Victor. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
No nonsense no ego meat and potatoes lessons. So much valuable information clear and concise. All teachers could learn from Steve how to pass this vital information down.
The clearest musical lesson EVER. I love it.

Ah, thanks for the comment Paul. Glad the lesson was a help.
I've been playing for 30 years and I never had training. I knew about which notes were which, but you opened my eyes with the other stuff. I finally understand what I've been missing all these years, Thank you very much and subscribed. No one explains it as well as you do.
Thank you. Glad I could shed some light on the theory stuff.
Steve, Thank you man. I bought my first bass guitar 6 months ago at age 55 and have bought "teach yourself " books enrolled in online lessons and tried my best to understand it all and got basically nowhere. 20 minutes with you dude and the lightbulb above my head lit up. I can't begin to express how grateful I am. I really believe that I can do this now
That is awesome! Stay with it and it will come. And if you get stuck and need some 1 on 1 lessons I offer them via Zoom. Keep playin' brother. All the best.
@@stevekonbass Thanks man I'm just spending time working my way through what I've learned from your first lesson. Taking it slow just now until I get it down and then start to increase the speed. I really feel like I'm actually making progress. Thankyou so much man
That's awesome! It's important to practice every day, especially as a beginner. Stay consistent, this way the knowledge stays in your head and your hands stay used to these new movements. If you don't pick up the bass for a few days you'll probably find you took a step back. Consistency is the key.
@@stevekonbass that's so true I try do at least an hour or so every day just trying to get the muscle memory so my fingers just do it. I'm struggling a bit with coordinating my plucking fingers but I know I'll get there If I keep at it. Thanks for your replys Steve I do appreciate it.

Excellent intro to bass guitar! Thanks, Steve!
Thanks for watching.
Steve, amazing to find you on here. Joe Anikewich Drummer here been over 25 years. Great to see you educating young bass players. Glad I found your video on here. God Bless
Joe! How have you been? Still playing drums? I see you do trumpet now. Glenn Gray's version of I Can't Get Started is one of my favorite tunes. Great trumpet in that. Been watching bass and guitar tutorials for over a year now but this one is the one that resonates with me the most as a lyric writer. Many thanks. Really helpful.
Happy to know you found it useful.
This is a great lesson. I’m a beginner ….left handed with a left handed bass. Nice and slow and clear so we left handers can transpose in a follow along manner. Mel Bay has a left handed Bass Chord picture book that is a great tool as an compliment to this lesson. Thanks for this sharing Steve.
Hey thanks Barry. Glad to hear you liked the lesson.
I'm the same Barry... finding it straight forward rearranging the info. I will check out the resource you mentioned.
Thanks and good luck.
Just realised that I have it already but thanks anyway 👍
Greetings Steve, I've been playing bass for 35 years, teaching for almost 30. Man what you teach in this video is absolute gold information for anyone who picks up our instrument. The pace in which you instruct is perfect. I am in fact going to direct All of my new beginning students to watch and bookmark this video. I truly think just saved alot of young new players a ton of cash with this. Instruction rates in my area is 25 dollars a half hr. So thank you Steve! Cheers to you dude! Up the Irons!! ✨🍻✨
That's awesome to hear coming from another bassist David. I appreciate that. From the viewer response I have received I gather I've helped beginners connect the dots so I'm glad I could do that.
You are the CZcams teacher that has finally gotten me to understand notes, scales and chords. Your teaching style is second to none. You broke everything do to the Simplist form. Thank you so much. It finally clicked in my head. I owe you buddy 🤘
Once it clicks it's like, "There it is!", right? Glad to hear I was able to break it down for you brother.
@@stevekonbass I'm so excited to learn to play bass. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to teach others. Once the economy improves I hope to take lessons with you.

@@stevekonbass Will do. God Bless and thanks again. Stay safe.
Total beginner here... picked up a Bass guitar for the first time one week ago. Been watching multiple videos with different approaches. Although it would be great to pick up an instrument and start playing songs, i'm the type, in everything i do, that i need to know the 'why' behind it all. Your video did just that for me! It makes sense now! Thanks!! You just got a new subscriber!!
Yes, the "why" is important. Glad you caught that. There's a value to learning how to play songs, but if that's all somebody does they're just playing somebody elses notes and missing out on the bigger picture.
@@stevekonbass This is why your such a great teacher. You are teaching from the Broad View.
Thank you!!
This is the best beginner lesson I ever watched. Thank you Steve!
You're very welcome!
I used to play piano just started with bass and have no clue. To me this is the irreplaceable one and only video a bass beginner should not miss.
I predict you'll pick up bass quick being you played piano. Hope you enjoy the journey. Thanks for the comment.
Best bass lesson I’ve watched and it transfers right to guitar as well. Your way underrated my man.
Glad to hear you dug the lesson.
Oh my God you are a life saver. I have the passion for the guitar but sadly I have no income high enough to get a teacher. I have searched the entire CZcams for a person who can simply the guitar for me to understand and you have done exactly well. Please keep posting more of this beginners stuff. Even the highest guitarist will still need it. Nice job
Glad I could help ya Bate.
A great foundation to learning some theory. Been playing forever but never took the plunge into theory and the lack thereof is like a ball and chain. This will help get me started. Thanks, brother!
You'll pick it up quick brother, it's pretty easy.
Took 30 minutes to breakdown what took ten years to fully grasp, simplicity is simple to understand when simply explained, thx coach !
You're welcome.
Fantastic video! I was a bass beginner at age 45 and due to work demands had to put it down several times over the years and at 61 I’m still a beginner. This was the best bootstrap lesson I have ever had to get me back into the instrument. Thanks!
Welcome back!
You're one of the best teacher
Thank you very much for your lessons
Thank you Daniel! Good to hear.
Man this is the best music lesson I ever received and have been playing since I was gigging at 5 years old!!! Very good job!!!!!
Thank you!
I just purchased a bass guitar to learn to play at church cos we don't have a bass guitarist. I was looking for tutorials and I;m so glad i landed here. The best teaching ever. Im so glad i found this page. Thank you so much for investing in my life through this video.
Thank you! I appreciate that. Please share the video if you can. That helps to keep it in circulation.
An experiment I did to learn some of the fretboard using this video, is by knowing what notes the strings are (EADG) and the wholes and half steps between the notes is that I would manually find the notes myself on one string, and play something simple with rhythm to it while singing out what letter it is I’m playing.
That's good. It's important to know where the notes are on the fretboard.
Great lesson, I can already tell learning more about playing bass will enhance playing 6string and working with triads. Thank you.
This is fantastic. Steve has a very natural teaching approach, no gimmicks, just sound fundamentals. I will be basing my practice on this one lesson. Wish me luck! Thanks Steve.
Thank you. Your fingers will be moving across the fretboard in no time.
This was very helpful. The graphs with the numbers and colors made it easy to conceptualize the triads and the order of notes
Glad to hear that.
My God am I glad to turn on youtube this morning and come across your page. I have been surfing the Internet for a couple of years looking for someone to explain the musical theory, especially the scales, I have learned a whole lot this morning. Excellent work.
Thanks so much. Glad I'm able to shed some light on theory. Please share the video with your musician friends.
This is really awesome.
Thanks for this great lecture

Thanks for the kind words Malibongwe. I'm glad to help. Please share the video with your musician friends as that helps to keep it in circulation.
YOUR BEST TEACHER NOW I CAN START BASE 🎸
I have been trying to understand this fundamental for a quite sometime but it was never easy until I watched this video, now is time connect my bass and start all over again 👌
Stay with it, you'll get it. When you see how to connect the dots things come easier.
My dad was self taught on guitar, my daughter plays guitar, my son is a grade 8 pianist and also plays trumpet. I just never managed to learn or do anything musical. This video has given me the spur to try, I’ll be buying a bass guitar very soon…. Great video 👍
That's awesome! Best of luck to you.
I'm a bass player in a Shadows tribute band, copying Jet Harris (you've probably never heard of either) . I can say this tutorial is far and away the best I have seen. The exact right balance of "theory" and "practice". Highly commended.
Thanks Peter.
The best and easy way of teaching one to understand basics on how to play bass guitar. I used to play keyboard now with this kind of demonstration I can find it easy to play bass guitar. Thenk you so much.
You're welcome.
I found this bass lesson so meaningful that I clearly understood the concept.
Thanks a lot.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Hey Steve, I've been playing bass for a long time off and on since my senior year in high school (I know I started late) and have been successful learning by ear in a gospel church and then years in a popular funk band here in CT. I have been embarrassed to tell people I didn't know music theory or my bass neck but my ear always bought me through!
I have to admit, this lesson was truly a blessing for me. Knowing where you are on your neck and how the notes relate really takes the mystery and unsure feelings out of playing.
Your a fantastic teacher and thoughtful to the process.
Thank you man for this lesson, I can't wait to go through this video again so I can REALLY learn "the basics"
Thank you again and happy bassing!!!
Truly glad I can help David. Never be embarrassed brother to ask a question. Most, if not all, musicians I've played with in my lifetime are down to Earth and ready to share their knowledge. Most of us are ear players, (Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen have said they play by ear) but the theory helps in navigation of the bass and understanding what everyone else in the band is doing. No matter what the age or experience, there's always stuff to learn. The second lesson where I talk about playing in minor might help you too.
@@stevekonbass Looking forward to it.
I'll have to digest this one first 😀
I love the fact that i can play almost anything but would really love to know what the heck I was doing on an intellectual level!
I'll get there!
You sure will. There will be a click and then you'll have that "Aha" moment.
So I'm 'schooled' as a classic flute player afer which I picked up drumming for the past 20 years. My dad left me his bass when he passed and recently I picked it up and I really love how you explain this. Will take the time to look at all your videos :)
Learning a new instrument is always fun. Enjoy the ride.
i’ve been struggling to learn bass as no one around me plays and because i am autistic and most videos i’ve watched haven’t helped me, they never went in depth enough for my brain to understand, this video helped me so much. i’ve been practicing and trying to learn music theory for a year and this video did what so many others couldn’t
Steve, I just found you here on CZcams. Your initial lesson is the perfect speed for a guy coming from a cello background over to the electric bass - and also the perfect combination of practical app and theory. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this information out here on the internet.
Thanks for watching George. Glad it was a help. I imagine the transition should be smooth for you.
Steve, I'm not about to say anything a bunch of other people haven't already said, but I'm gonna say it anyway because I'm SO grateful to have found your channel. I've been playing bass for a good 7 years or so, but I've ALWAYS done everything by ear because I've always struggled to learn music theory. I have an extremely basic understanding, but I don't have my scales memorized, much less relative minors and corresponding chords and all that. Even taking remedial classes in high school for it and having one-on-one tutoring by my band director, I still struggled. It's always been like a foreign language that my brain absolutely cannot comprehend or retain. I've just come across your channel, and this is the first video I've watched. I've been taking notes on it little by little and then doing practice with it. In the short time I've started watching, I'm already understanding better than I ever have. Thank you so incredibly much for putting out this great content. This is the element I've been missing, and I'm so excited to level up my playing!
That's totally awesome to hear. Yeah, once that light bulb goes on and ya see it, it becomes easy. Here are links to my video lessons. Lessons 1, 2, 3, and 9 should really help you shed some light on things.

Very good teacher... I love the way he took his time to show me how to play 1 4 5 and others. He is a great teacher...
Thanks Tozo.
Just adding to the other comments I've watched maybe hundreds of people online trying to teach bass. Honestly for the first time I'm clearly understanding how the bass fretboard is laid-out and how to work my way around it. I'm a 55 yrs old drummer and I've decided to start playing the bass.I'm now one of your followers and I have subscribed keep up the great work. You're the best in my opinion and I want to thank you.
That's awesome to hear Melford. Bass and drums are connected so you'll be ahead of the game with your timing as you learn. I posted lesson 7 last week where I talk about locking in with drums. You might want to jump ahead and check that out: czcams.com/video/rOzW0fo41aQ/video.html
This man here definitely has my subscription and he is by far so different from other people who make base tutorials whereas then I could not understand now I can say that I understand thank you very much sir for your time and these tutorials
I appreciate that!
This was just what I needed you made a student and a fan . You explained everything so clearly I am archiving this lesson for my grandson
That's great to hear Richard and good to know that you are passing along some music knowledge to your grandson.
