      If you do there are many options besides Recoleta and Palermo, that are astutely recommended as THE options because prices are obscenely inflated rent wise. Many safe parts of the city, but always choose locations near subway stations or avenues, where public transportatión is profuse. And there many excelente restaurants that are not highly rated in the web just because the do not pay to be.

      Hi! I'm Argentinian. There's not much to think about our "currency situation" as you put it. If you come here with US Dollars and exchange them at reputable locations, you will find most of the country accessible or even cheap. But you need to manage using our currency (the Argentinian Peso). Also, and this is beyond the scope of your question, you might want to look and feel as "anti tourist" as possible to avoid dodgy cab drivers, inmoral shop keepers and such... Welcome to Argentina! Here are a couple of tips about brewing mate :)
    1. The yerba mate: I don't like Cachamate but it's totally up to you. This brand introduces a blend of yerba mate and other yerbas. It's like helps digestion. But it's not the original flavor, let's say. Try instead Taragui, Rosamonte, among others.
    2. Drinking mate is highly addictive, but it's not so easy in the beginning. You will need to drink a lot of mates before you start to enjoy them.
    3. Yes, you should review the brewing process again. Don't be afraid to use your hand to turn down the mate to get all the dust of the yerba to the top of the mate. The goal here is to remove the dust from the bottom of the mate, otherwise when you sip, the metal pump could be blocked by the dust.
    After doing so, keep the "hole" in the yerba and serve hot water there, just a little bit to get the yerba humid. Then enter the metal pump in the hole, and serve the rest of the hot water, but take care of not covering all the yerba (to leave some surface of yerba dry)
    4. enjoy it! good luck!

      she definitely burnt (boiling water) the yerba and also overstepped it, you're supposed to start drinking it in small slurps as soon as possible, and repeat, it brews fast that's why you keep some dry and progress pouring over it when the flavors start weakening

    The best way to try the "mate" flavour is by drinking it as a tea; it comes in bags, like tea and you can consume it as so; after use your palate to the flavor, will be more simple for you to try it the traditional way; both are, in fact, "traditional" but the tea is a little newer.

    • @girlvsglobe
      @girlvsglobe  Před 10 měsíci +4

      Ohh is this mate cocido? I have some teabags at home but was told it’s not the “proper” way of having it 😂

    • @sinergiamdp
      @sinergiamdp Před 10 měsíci +5

      @@girlvsglobe Yes, that's "mate cocido", it's the same herb but more ground, in order to brew faster.
      It's prepared exactly the same as tea and you can add milk as english do with tea or a little lemon juice to give it a frutal and acid touch; that will be a more friendly way to get used to the new flavor and calibrating your palate for analyzing it better, as you try once and again; usually is sweeten with sugar, honey or dietetic sweetener; you'll like it.
      I hope that you enjoy all the time you spent at this beautiful lands.
      I feel glad of helping you, at least in a little cultural topic like this.

    I'm American and my wife is Argentinian and can relate to many of your experiences! Yes, the economic situation is beyond horrible in Argentina but the reason your money goes farther there is because the locals want your cash so they can get out of their rapidly devaluing pesos. You mentioned realizing the "street rate" (dollar blue) by engaging with the money changers on Calle Florida, etc. and it feeling "dodgy". I agree (although generally it's OK) which is why I and many others use Western Union. WU will give you near the dollar blue rate with the added convenience of direct bank transfers, etc. You install their app on your phone and then essentially transfer yourself money from your home bank. They do the electronic transfer/conversion automatically and give you near the dollar blue rate. You then pick up the pesos in one of their many physical locations throughout the country.

    Welcome to Buenos Aires, my hometown! I hope you'll have a fantastic stay and enjoy every single minute of it.
    You must have noticed our Chinatown is much smaller than London's but very picturesque and you can find some authenticity flavour because there's a solid Asian community.
    The area that reminds you of Canary Wharf is called Puerto Madero, the newest neighbourhood in the city. The first time I visited London over 20 years ago something similar happened to me in Butler's Wharf, nearby Tower Bridge. Vibes were very noticeable, all those decks... I think Puerto Madero was built with that area of London on mind and they've done quite a nice job!
    We are mostly friendly and trustworthy people but please always be careful and do your own research. Do not assume that something is done one way or another because someone tells you so. I'm talking about exchange and other stuff too. If it feels dodgy, it is probably for some good reason and you don't have to run unnecessary risks when there are much safer options.
    Yerba mate is very popular here but it's not for everyone. I've only tried it once when I visited an estancia in El Chalten in Patagonia. In my family we drink tea and coffee everyday, though we can have mate cocido sometimes, and I know we are not the only ones. I am one of those of Italian heritage 🙋‍♀️ with some English and Irish connections in the family but that's not the point. If you want to try good quality pasta, a specialised shop (Casa de Pastas) is a much better idea than the supermarket. There are lots of them everywhere across the city and they'll sell you everything you need to enjoy a full experience. We usually have pasta on Sundays but any day is a good day!
    I agree with you about shopping for food in a country. I also loved to do so everytime I was in London! If you like sandwiches as fast food, do not miss our 'tostado mixto'. Imagine M&S ham and cheese triangled sandwiches but hot and grilled. Add a cup of tea or milk and coffee for a perfect match. You'll find it in every bar or coffee shop in town.
    I've enjoyed watching this video; some very beautiful views of Buenos Aires that make me feel like exploring right now! It's always interesting to discover our city through foreign eyes; thank you for the visit and the positive vibes. Feel at home and enjoy, Girl!!

Wow - that Stanley mate/bombilla look like the Mercedes of mates. Nice! Of course the best way to experience mate is with friends - it's a social drink primarily and is passed around from person to person typically.

  • @lisandromc78
    @lisandromc78 Před 10 měsíci

    Haha your face at 9:36 is priceless 🤣... the reason being, that at 9:20 you poured *very* hot water, which will overextract the flavor from the yerba leaves (you "burn" the mate), just like it would happen to coffee in boiling water. The proper temperature for mate is 70-75 degrees Celsius. For the same reason, don't wet all the yerba at once, save some flavor for later. About the preparatory shaking: the idea is to allow some air between the leaves, so that the mate doesn't get vacuum-clogged while you drink it. You must shake it while it's upside down, such that the finer leaves will stay on top once you take it back to the upright position. Finally, note that "yerba mate", or just "yerba", refers to the leaves, while the beverage itself is called simply "mate". Anyway, keep it up and enjoy your stay!

    Great job on the Mate 🧉 little tip , first three sip your throw away with the water not so hot yet , also I do add a little bit of auger on the bottom if you like , or honey 🍯 , when the water is ready like 75° , like 24 ° Celsius , it should be fine , I do also add in my mate , lemon peels , or orange peels ( make sure they're fully dry) did you try the Facturas? Ask at the local bakery 👍 my name is Julio,I'm from Argentina living in Washington State Spokane City , greetings to you guys maybe if I go to Buenos Aires again I will make the Asado Argentinean traditional Bbq 🇦🇷👋 Take care !

    The purpose of shaking the mate upside down and cover with the hand is that the powder stays in your hand, of course it doesn't work with a paper towel LOL. The brand you bought is not pure yerba mate but a mix of herbs. You put the bombilla in the wrong way, you should try again with someone who knows how tu prepare it, but have in mind that mate is an acquired taste. Nice video!

    Just PLEASE be very careful when changing money, dont go alone! Even if the "Arbolito" (Thats the term here) goes to your house.

    Zapalliros Verdes are like Zucchinni. (You can also find Zucchinni around Argentina and Uruguay) but Zapallito is a regional/local vegetable from "Rio de la Plara region". By the way, take care of them, if they are "mature" please dont eat them, they are "dangerous" (you won't die, but they are not recomended). By the way, in south america, most of the times people eats Zapallo Anco (as pumpkings(. is not a pumpkin but it's the same flavour/taste. In case you want a real pumpkin, you have to ask for "Zapallo Cabutia". Same scenario with tomatoes, there are many type of tomatoes, cherry, rome (tomate tipo roma) also the bigger ones mostly used for salads, but there is also a local tomato called "perita" or "Criollo" (Creolle), just give it a chance. they are so sweet (Well....organic tomatoes are really sweet, the ones in the supermarkets taste like eatin a slice of foamy).
    By the way.......if you want to make the difference....move away from the touristic neighbourhoods....
    Get a train ticket and go ro Trigre (it's safe, all the northen part of Gran Buenos Aires is safe).
    And, if you can speak in spanish, feel free to catch a bus or ride a train to the southenr parto of "Gran Buenos Aires".
    My suggestion....
    If you wanna taste "real home-made" and cheap argentinian food...
    Browse in googlemaps "Turf" (in Boedo Neighbourhood).
    Ten times cheaper than "Don Julio" or any place in Puerto Madero...
    One of the "Century XX" Bodegon (a cheaper place .. kinda slummer reastaurant...but....you can taste the real taste of argentinian food over there...
    #1 Cabutia rellena con queso (A pumpkin filled with a mixture of several chesses / fromagios(, where you shink diffrent pieces of different meats (chicken, pork, cow, lamb....) only 10-12 u$s (and its ok for 2 people even 3.
    #2 Milanesa Napolitana (typical most wanted food in argentina).
    #3 Osobuco bajonero (bajon = its a slang to make referente when you are staving, of after smoking a joint, when you need to eat something, mostly sugared). Osobuco is the frontal leg of a pork, and it's cooked during 3 o 4 hours in red wine.
    All these dishes it cost around 10 to 15 bucks, not mor (and for sure these dishes are for 2 o 3 people)
    Then if you want to taste a "old school" dessert...."Tarantella Mixta:
    Its a kind of custard (Flan), mixed with bread pudding, and a floor of apple slices. (Italian Recipe).

    You can try adding sugar or honey on top of the yerba mate. Usually the traditional drinkers will say that's an offense but not everyone enjoys the strong bitter taste. I personally don't mind if it's either with or without. You can also try "mate cocido", this version is a more soft tea-stlye beverage where you use boiling water.
    Enjoy the rest of your stay!
    Ps. Advise, don't show your phone too much while you wander downtown's parks 🫣 (microcentro/san telmo)

    The dogmátic instructions for preparing mate are pure crap. Millones drink mate everyday AND don't care if they shake the gourd or not ir if the straw is moved, and so on. The first two or three mates are usually spitted as the herb Is unbearably bitter at thid stage. From then on the flavor is stable and typical. The water must be hot but not boiling or it will become an infusion and tasteless after a short while.
