If Microsoft had included the type cover and stylus in the base price, they would have sold loads of this!
You do know that certain models of the SP8 are already sold out on Best Buy and the Microsoft store, correct...
@@msp5138 That's how appealing SP8 is. It's a gorgeous device. But there's still many more people put off by the price.
Microsoft is really more concerned with maximizing margin on each one sold rather making margin on overall sales.
Yea, a lot of these comments are missing the point, it's targeted at large organisations, or consumers prepared to pay the premium, probably not for you.
I have the 32GB i7 version, it doesn't throttle, runs game dev tools, and can't be compared to anything at this form-factor and build quality, ANYTHING!
@@at2ectrebuke so what you are saying, is. You don't like it?
Man, I remember using my Pro4 for University. I bought a refurbished model and it was so much money for me at the time, but it was such a game changer, especially with OneNote. But the value proposition has plummeted, these things are so expensive for very weak specs.
The price is rough but anyone with a Costco membership should be able to find it all as a bundle for a good deal at some point. Costco has had fantastic bundle deals on the previous models so I don't see why they wouldn't on this one too.
*I'm not trying to shill Costco. I don't even own a Costco membership. Just wanna help save people money.
It was on sale on Black Friday and during the months but it still wasn’t good enough , it almost close to the military student discount plus $150 off from Costco warehouse except it was the lower versions in storage etc. and can’t choose the color of surface and keyboard
@@CouchPootatoo Yeah unfortunately it takes a while after release for the decent deals to some. My mom got her sp7 bundle for a few hundred less at Costco than I got my sp5 device only with a student discount.
Costco does have an attractive bundle price, but it's only the 128GB model, which is fairly useless.
@@HydraulicDesign that’s what I’m saying , I didn’t even get it , I prefer 16 gb ram also
Microsoft always have great bundles and sales during back to school season and holidays too!
I’ve been using that same Surface Pro 3 since 2015 even until now. Still performs well for what it’s made for. It’s great that they finally include Thunderbolt and easy upgradeable SSD (though less common form) but the micro SD is gone (I keep rarely accessed files there). It still is a very expensive upfront cost of owning but will most likely survive far more than half a decade of use (unless you get the cheapest model).

Same, I’m using a SP3 as well and it still holds up very well for all of my schooling and light gaming needs
That wasn't my experience, I went through 3 SP4's thanks to flickergate and got a sp5 which only lasted a year.
@@thatone3809 I had flickergate too and the recall ended 2 months before I was going to send it in :(
I got the pro 7 though and I'm pretty happy and will prob use it until pro 11 comes out or something lol
Most people aren't understanding that the 65w charger from the OnePlus uses non standard voltages to achieve it's 65w. I really would be surprised if any laptop could actually use the 65w unless it was made by them.
Looking forward to the next iteration of this in '22. Add Alder lake CPU, a larger trackpad, mini LED/OLED display and I am sold on this.
thats easily easily like 1000$ more in Microsoft's book
A 5800u Ryzen would be amazing
Metoo
I hope Microsoft really working serious for optimizing Windows on ARM, so any ARM processors like Snapdragon 8cx would be very useful and on par with the 28W Intel Core CPU, given the slim form factor that limits cooling.
What are you not sold on? You’re getting a full operating system over the iPad’s mobile application.
I really love the Pro 8. It is a fantastic device, however, I HATE the power and volume button placement. Why did they change it!? I love to use it in portrait mode for reading web pages, documents, taking notes with the pen in One Note or Journal, etc. If I'm not careful, though, the volume button will rest against my waist when holding it on my lap and initiate power down. If you stand it up on a table to rest against something, forget it. It will always power off. I'm really surprised that no reviewers have commented on this. It is a real usability fail.
Great review! I’m in both the apple and Microsoft ecosystems but use a surface pro 6 for work and actually even though I have a type cover I’m ok with using with a portable stand and a Bluetooth compact keyboard. So at some point this could be a viable option without the type case…. Find it useful as a very portable desktop replacement that I dock everywhere occasionally using the pen.
I just realized, you got fit! Looking at your old videos, seems like you got yourself working out. Nice!
Thing about the surface is the previous generations remain viable for a long time. My wife uses a surface for designing products for her store, we just got her a Surface Pro 7 with an i7, 16 gigs of ram and a 256GB drive for $899, if we drop in a 1tb MicroSD that will add an extra 1TB of space for 150 bucks. For her work it's a pretty good deal. Before that we spent 300 bucks on a SP3 that lasted for years. We only upgraded because she started having issues with the touchscreen, which is a no go when your job is literally designing products to make and sell.
All those specs for only $899? I'm buying that lol thanks
@@shawn4626 I just checked the listing for the one we bought and it's back up to 1264.19 on Walmarts site. I had purchased an i5 model from Best Buy for her Christmas at $741 and we found that listing right after, ordered it and returned the Best Buy Surface. Either way, with Surface the deals are out there all the time, just gotta keep an eye out for the right price.
My Surface Pro 5 (almost 3 years old now) has started having touchscreen issues. There are areas on unresponsiveness
@@anmolt3840051 my wife's old surface, which now exclusively plays the Sims, would find the cursor stuck in the upper right hand corner intermittently, and she would need to disconnect and reconnect her keyboard to get it working again. It became a bigger and bigger nuisance.
Loss of the Micro SD slot on the Pro X and Pro 8 are the worst things to happen to the line since their inception. I would rather have an SD Slot than a headphone jack on the pro 8
Couldn't agree more with your into. I had a Surface Pro 1 for College and it was the best. Super small, ez to transport, could take hand written notes and transfer them to text. Was golden.
Despite the USB-C connector, OnePlus uses a proprietary protocol for power. IIRC it maxes out at like 25W if you use it with anything other than a OnePlus (and maybe Oppo) device.
Yes correct! This is so annoying...also the other way round, my OnePlus smartphone does also not support quick charge or usb PD protocol. Everything cool when you use the original power brick and it charges very fast, but for everything else it's annoying. Only one of my friends owns a OnePlus aswell. That leads me to having additional power plugs around the house for the other ones.
They use high amperage as opposed to high voltage, the idea being that it generates less heat in the phone itself and instead inside the wall plug. Oppo uses the same technology, I actually use oppo chargers with my OnePlus 6t because they are far easier to find online. The downside being they aren't compatible with qualcomms quickcharge standard which uses high voltage instead of amperage. Its really cool tech overall but it is slightly inconvenient.
OnePlus have been using Oppo fast charging tech from 2016, that time when many manufacturers doesn't include Qualcomm's Quick Charge in their hardware due to cost and USB PD haven't become a standard.
The OnePlus brick he used is actually USB-PD capable but only up to 45W, which is why the surface showed a slow charging warning.
IIRC?
I had the Surface Pro 4 for five years. 1.7lbs, Intel i7 8th gen, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD. Great display at the time, and still very good today. The light weight makes it an easy travel companion for traveling sales reps or traveling consultants/analysts.
The only reason I replaced it was the mediocre battery life and 8GB of RAM that isn't adjustable. 8GB of RAM is fine for general web surfing and moderate excel use, but not good enough for programming and data engineering. 16GB of RAM is the new standard.
I got a good deal at Costco for the 256gb/8 GB/I5 model. It included the type cover and pen. Then I got a 1TB SSD online for 130. This was considerably cheaper than paying an additional 800 for the 1TB model. It only took about an hour to back up/install/restore using the built-in backup program buried in the Control Panel.
Can you link or give the model of the 1 TB you found? I do not want to end up getting the wrong one and there are so many. Cheers!
I had the original Surface Pro. Seeing this, it makes me want a new one, nice and well refined compared to the original.
I’ve subscribed and very glad to have come across you! Great review, largely confirming my thoughts about the SP8. I went for an i5 graphite model with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage and albeit with very light use am very impressed with its speed and performance. It’s not light to handle but it is classy and performs well.
Ngl, I got distracted from the superb content by how gorgeously this was shot and edited. Really gave me pause at how inspiring it looked.
great review as always, very helpful. Would have loved a pen demo with something like Onenote for handwritten notes. Also, worth waiting for the Alderlake edition?
I got a surface pro 4 in 2016 and I am still using it as my main laptop today. Runs just fine, and the only downside is that I need to replace the battery. However, I can also attest that the Alcántara type cover does NOT hold up over time. The edges of mine have peeled from the cover itself so I have dangly flaps of material hanging off the type cover 😂 That’s disappointing, but honestly the only downside to this device. If you’re a student, this is the ultimate school machine.
Excellent review Eber! You touched on important points I didn't see in other reviews!
Thanks for watching and commenting🤗🤗

Thanks for the really detailed review, It was really helpful!
I own one for about 2 weeks now and this device is really nice. It's one of the best devices i ever own(including Surface Laptop 4/3, MB Pro, Air M1) but the battery doesn't hold as much as Mircosoft claims... it holds somewhere 8-9 hours with 120hz, it's ok, but I miss the 16 Hours of the MB Air. Beside this, it's the best device you can own on a daily basis
Your review is exactly what I was looking for. And the specifications of the product you have, That's what I'm planning to purchase.
Wow, but I didn't expect this kind of performance. I couldn't stop being amazed!
But the price isn't very nice
But when you look at portability, the Windows 11 base, the recognized design, the usability of Surface Slim Pen 2, the cooling system that showed good results, and so on, this price is forgiving ha ha
Thank you for the good review! I can't wait to buy it!
(If my grammar is not good, I left a comment using a translator because I am Korean Please understand.)
Dont worry your english is very good ! Also do you think that the keyboard is confortable because someone that I know said it was not.
Thanks for the coverage on this
Thank you. Might as well get one for myself. Been wanting it 7 years ago.
Great review thank you. I'm on the surface pro7 which I love. As you say the price tag is high so I probably won't upgrade just yet. Greetings from North Wales UK. 😉😉
Imagine if Microsoft really pulled it off with SQ chips in the same level with Apple Silicon, that would be a beast of a machine, with all the optimizations and cooling. I hope that the softwares that are being optimized under Intel 12th gen hybrid CPUS will also have some level of support
I'm waiting for it as well... Intel CPUs stack in the past. If the rumors are correct we should see similar performance to m1 by the end of this year or next year.
@@Alex-mu3gf your prediction were correct
I am getting a surface 8 too! Honestly where things changed a lot was the surface 4 and it looks sick as well as the others
I also had SP3 for University and loved it.
I ended up between Lenovo and this, ended up buying the Surface pro specifically for meetings, and audio and video quality is really nice.
The extra keyboard thing sucks a bit because it's additional costing, and can be a bit small at first but you can get used to it. The lack of USB-A ports which is discovered when it arrived, but buying usb hub or usb-c devices gets your way around it.
Excellent video. I am considering this as a replacement for my Surface Book 3. I generally dock my computer and use it for excel work.. Any suggestions if this is the right computer or should I stay with the Surface Laptop family?
it blows my mind that the Surface Type Cover, being basically a membrane keyboard, actually cost more than G915, Keychron and the rest while don't offer even a fraction of performance
It's because it's proprietary ✨🌈
Lol goodluck having G915 that thin
I can say I have a first generation Surface Laptop, and I have had no issues with the charger after years of regular use.
But the blue alcantara on the keyboard area does not look so great anymore. It looks dirty all the time, even though I have tried to keep it clean with special cleaner.
The price is what puts me in check after getting so excited to see what it can do. The MS tax makes me think of the Apple tax, and while they're not the same I'm still curious how a Surface Pro 8 stacks up against a macbook or ipad pro. I don't expect any converts, but if a macbook at 16gb of ram and a 256gb ssd feels good for the money, does this feel just as good standing next to it?
IMHO where SP 8 excels at is touch screen and upgradeable storage. Everything else, especially when you consider that Type Cover and Surface Pen are additional cost, M1 Macbook Air could be better.
I have neither of those, tho picked up base level M1 MBA and returned it after 2 days due to huge bezels around the screen(couldnt force myself to pay 1050 euros for such and old design), always wanted Surface Pro device, perhaps will be getting this one, unless SP 9 or Surface Laptop 5 turns out this year to be even better. Or maybe even Asus ROG Z13, that one supposedly comes with keyboard included and has more powerful inards, which means that it will last longer performance wise.
Great review as usual! Thank you. One small suggested edit: I don’t believe the display is 13.3 inches. I believe it’s 13.0 inches. Keep the great reviews coming and thanks again.
I have one and I absolutely love it! It's the ONLY Windows PC I would buy. I only buy Surface Products. Before this, I had the Surface Book 2 13.5".. Loved that one too, but the footprint was just too big. THIS SP8 is the perfect size for me. Strongly recommend if you're in the market for a Windows Laptop. I got a great deal on a SP8 bundle at Costco over Christmas. Full Retail Price, not sure if I would have purchased it. Nonetheless, took advantage of a great deal and I'm completely happy with it. Pros: Everything. Cons: Windows OS. Lol I'm a Mac guy all the way, but in the PC world, I'm a Surface guy.
I have the Surface Pro 8, would only buy Surface Pro/Book/Laptop Studio for Windows devices as well. Otherwise I’d just go with an iPad Pro or MacBook Pro. I wanted a 2-1 so I got this device.
Amazing review! Keep it up!
The production quality of this video is outstanding wow
Great review 👍
Guys, you may be able to buy KIOXIA SSD's which is similar in form factor to the one shown in the video and can get up to 1TB ones at that for the same price as any other m.2 1TB storage drives but maybe a little bit pricey over regular size models.
I have the Pro 7 base model with 128gb MicroSD card for files, pen, keyboard, paperlike cover and its amazing for school, wouldn't use it for anything heavy but it certainly does what it's supposed to be doing. Only bad thing about this model is that it has passive cooling which can become pretty warm to the touch... but its very quiet cuz of it so its not all bad
Great video! is the compatible with Surface Pen 2? And if so, is there a magnetic bezel on the left that would allow the pen to attach to it?
Thanks for the review. Late for comment but what do you think of this : I think MS keeps prices high for partnership reasons with others laptop brands which use windows. What do you think ?
If the keyboard is made from the same stuff as the old one, it'll last. I have a Surface Pro 4 from way back and only now does it start fraying at the bottom right edge.
Heads up for every student that wants to buy it. If u buy it at Microsoft's own website you can get a 10% student discount. Works also for someone in school or parents.
Too pricey, no SD slot, odd size SSD that makes it harder to source an upgrade.
Going for a i3 based Surface Go 3 to compliment my gaming laptop to run basic apps, GameCube emulation and retro PC games.
I just wished the Go 3 had a 11th gen i CPU for the Iris graphics.
Whoa, I didn't realize they got rid of the micro SD slot...... It was so useful to have media downloaded to an SD card for travel, etc.
@@PhilipChou I use my 128GB leftover microSD card al the time for all kinds of files and that helps me keep my QLC SSD clean and less worn out. Otherwise QLC SSDs are worse than traditional TLC and I don't recommend getting them, especially the Intel 660p, which is what I have sadly
I am thinking going of doing. The pro 8 looks nice, but the price is really high for me
I went with an m1 iPad Pro. That shit is fast aus fuck and has better battery life. The Software is no where near Windows though
Isnt 2230 a common SSD size?
And surface pro 8 is the best windows ultrabook/tablet you can get.
It is only natural that its expensive.
Good job
I wonder if u could answer my question. I need a laptop for my 3d engineering projects preferably this year. Should I get it this year or should I skip 2022 and wait for arm architecture or sth ?
Tnk u
My surface pro 3 is still running strong. the Keyboard started to show significant wear after about 5 years. In general, the surface series last a long time.
I gave up on Surface kick stand, it's too unstable on a mattress, or other similarly soft surfaces.
2-in-1 is a lot more stable in any orientation.
The surface connector is absolutely reliable. My wife got a surface pro 7 plus and uses the old charging brick from her former surface Pro 3 every day at work. What's really not reliable are the lightning cables made by Apple. Don't get me wrong the connector design is very solid but the cables are crap.
I have never liked touchpads. Will the mouse / mice from the Surface Go work with the Surface Pro or do you need to buy a mouse with the little dongle thing sticking out of a USB port ?
Looks really nice. I have the pro 7 and love it.
I bought a 256gb ssd 8gb ram version for $345 used on ebay, very happy with it considering I can charge it with USB-C, and don't need any frills because I only want it for photoshop.
Before I got this, I was using a mele 3C mini pc velcroed to a Huion 13" drawing tablet, which was my portable drawing device, and it is bulky as can be, bigger than a typical laptop.
The wallpaper wow!
Where can i get it?
Thanks for...
You might not have mentioned this since you’re using Amazon affiliate links but at the time of publishing this is at Best Buy for 899 and open box like new for under 800 bucks! Quite a deal!
I got the alkatera keyboard when it first came out and I'll go on record saying it maintained it's look WAYYY BETTER than the regular keyboards they make
I would get one, but the price of the surface brand always kept me away from it. It is just way too expensive for an tech gadget which have to be replaced after a short time.
What's a short time to you? I've used my 2017 one almost daily and she's still going strong. I do need a new battery soon but otherwise it's been good. An xps 13 or hp envy isn't exactly much cheaper.
Normal laptop much cheaper has way more storage 128gb ???
@@NiSE_Rafter can you replace the battery on the surface pro 8 in the future?
@@gurugamer8632 It'll probably be like the old ones where it's hard to do but it's possible.
Do you own one? So you clearly don't know what you are talking about...
Amazing review!
My original surface pro 1 is still going strong. 💪
Is it possible to charge the pen wireless on the screen/backside or wireless charger without the keyboard compartment?
Nice review, with fair points.
I’m about to retire my 11 year old laptop and replace it by a Surface Pro 8 (i5, 16GB, 256GB).
It’s definitely expensive, but if I can use it >5 years, a few hundred dollars doesn’t really matter that much.
Quick question. Will the Noctua NF-A12x25 fit in the lenvo c530? Im looking forward to buy those fans but im not sure if they will fit in.
A quick question, does the older version Typecover (such as the one from SP6/7) work on the SP8? Thanks!
The charger looks very similier to my surface pro 4 charger, which is still going strong.
Ive been watching review videos of all Surface products for over a week. This review was very good but ive opted for an S8 Ultra 5G. Samsung are throwing in an S Pen and Keyboard for free, with 5g and a 14" screen its still cheaper than the MS Surface. For media consumption and light 0365 work I think ive made the right choice... Also not a fan of proprietary chargers either - find out on the 25th Feb if I have indeed made the right choice.
Hi! Do you think it worth updating from SP7 (i7/16/256) to analogous model but SP8?
ty for review
So can the pen be charged without the keyboard? 🤔🤔. I’ve always wondered about this.
Can you guys also do a review on the asus vivobook 13 slate. Its a more budget version of this laptop with an oled screen
When I got mine (i5 256GB, 8GB Ram), I tried using my oneplus 65W charger, and it charged at the same speed as with the surface charger. It just had a notification that I should use the surface charger, but I suppose that it may be when I did this compared to when you did
Would the i7 16gb ram be good for video editing? I use Vegas movie studio a photoshop heavily so I’m curious if it’s a good option?
I'm considering to get SP8 i5 8GB RAM & 256GB SSD for my moderate usage (sometime I use lightroom and photoshop) . I already have notebook i7 with 16 GB RAM for my daily office works and will use the SP8 as the companion of this notebook . Is i5 with 8RAM good decision for the long run? thanks
Bought the base model surface pro 6 when it was launched hated it after few windows update which made it slower and slower, which actually is SACRE BLE 🤯🤯
Do you know when they will restock , I’ve been waiting forever
Regarding the surface connector, I daily drove a surface laptop 3 for two years and the surface connector broke in around 18 months. The plastic shell came off and then the connector stopped working entirely. This experience really soured my on surface devices becuase for $1600 I want a charger to atlest work for the lifespan of the device.
In Australia we get a bundle with the Keyboard in the 128gb version.
I wonder your thoughts on the Thinkpad X12
I've been meaning to get a Surface for work/financials, old console emulation/casual fighting game gaming, and photo editing/back up on the go, but as good as this generation is I think I'll wait for next gen with Alder Lake mobile. I mean...imagine 2 or 4 P-cores with 4 or 8 efficiency cores for those jobs, plus the newer Intel iGPUs for mobile chips.
A Surface laptop 5 will have alder lake this year, and is much better than the pro lineup for gaming/photo editing.
I use a surface laptop 3 currently and I'm doing fine animating and editing with the i7 model.
Holy crap the camera and mic quality are insane
Is it possible to use it as a display now?
My friend has a Baseus 65w charger (I think it's GaN, but I might be wrong) and it doesn't give any slow charging notif when using it via type-C.
Nice review! Do you still code on it? How's the coding experience? Can it run Android Studio and android emulators without a problem?
Hi friend!
I'm in engineering and all my engineering apps (solid works, Matlab, and Autodesk) runs fine so I can imagine that'll it be fine for coding too!
still running my old SP3 sadly only as a media device since the touchscreen barely works and the keyboard is starting to tear and the touchpad cant be pressed anymore. I have had mine since 2015 however so since I cant upgrade it in any way Im happy its running at all right now lol.
Also I had to install a super light version of linux because windows 10 does not work with 4GB of RAM.
it would be nice if we can use the USB port on the charging brick for data.
I am student thinking to get i5 for MS Office and Autodesk AutoCAD..do you think can it run the AutoCAD?? Or shall I get Surface Pro 7 Plus with i7??
In Germany they have usually some discounts around 10% for students on the surface pro for many years.
i've had the Surface Pro 1, 3, 4 & 5 and decided to walk away from the product line b/c of longevity issues with the type cover and charger. I agree that the accessories you need to bring it truly in line with being a laptop add too much to the cost. My other pet peeves are the limited consumer warranties and the complete lack of repairability. Also support in LATAM is basically non existent. I love the 1080p webcam & studio mic, but for me I have to look elsewhere.
Hmm I've been using the surface pro 5 daily for the past 3 years and it's honestly been fine for me other than the fact that it's rather slow
For the type of product it is, no laptop/tablet in it's class will give u any of those things
And can’t replace the battery
Never had any issues with the Pro line charger or keyboards TBH - Although unless you’re using your PC to make a living there’s no reason to spend on the Surface line of devices, better off with a more affordable line of products if it’s just for personal use, or a used iPad Pro can offer amazing value for general personal computing. I only buy the Surface range because it’s a work/business device and makes back it’s value many times over during it’s lifetime
I decided to stop using them because they are so hard to fix. They are glued together typically wich makes them difficult to open up.
I'm still rockin meh Yoga 2 Pro 13" with a 3K screen from 8!! years ago.. damn, lol half the keyboard doesn't even light up anymore.
Crazy part, before that laptop I would upgrade every year or two because there was just something that much better and they always felt like they could be faster or get better battery life etc.
Does the surface pro 8 have better battery life than a MacBook pro m1 14 inch in light work (web browsing)? Here you claim it is approx 15h and in your other video you claim the m1 gets 9h but it does not state the nits it was tested at (I'm aware chrome uses more battery vs safari on mac so this might explain a bit of difference however there are lots of varying battery life claims). Are these values correct/comparable? If so I'm suprised sp8 beats m1 pro in battery in light tasks/browsing and this will affect my purchase choice.
Would it be better to get the 16gb SP7+ with an i7 or get the 16gb SP8 with an i5 instead?
Where can I get that wallpaper?
My understanding is that the Surface pen's eraser isn't pressure sensitive -- it's a feature of Microsoft Whiteboard that adjusts the size of the eraser based on movement speed.
My surface laptop 4 15in charges pretty quickly via usb c with an aohi 65w PD charger. I suspect that brick used in this video isn’t a 45-65w fast charger.
Would the i5 a better option for for power consumption?
Is it available to but a ssd and install on it?
Quick question does anybody now what messenger bag he has at 3:29 ? I really want it!
How much space does one note provide?
Is the normal pen also working on it?
3 hours of battery with heavy use? that seems wildly low to me. What is the deal with the surface and its battery, I keep hearing wildly different battery lengths, from 15 hours to 6 hours tops and now you've said 3 hours after heavy use? What is the battery for medium use? 10 hours? like as a note-taking/essay writing/presentation-making machine, is it closer to 10 hours or 3?
Which messenger bag is that one, by the way ? : )
