Just received my Surface Pro 8 today and wanted to thank you for this video. I was surprised how much your videos helped me up and running. I watched a lot of videos before deciding on the SP8 over the new 12.9 iPad Pro. For my use case I decided I didn't need all the power of the M1 chip and preferred a device built with a complete operating system that wasn't developed for mobile devices. Your videos showed examples using the SP8 as both tablet and computer seamlessly. Windows has come a long way. Thanks again!

I had to surface pro 3 when it came out and I used it to the max. onenote was especially great. I used Photoshop with the pen, did animation videos in after effects and edited a lot of videos in Premiere. but now since 4 years i own a surface book 2 because the performance of the i5 surface pro 3 wasn't enough anymore and it's one of the best laptops and tablets in one because of the performance at the big screen and the port selection. together with the surface dock it makes a perfekt work station with a digitizer.
and as a photographer I just love the 3:2 aspect ratio. it's just perfect.

I got the Pro 8, but there’s definitely an ergonomics advantage to the SP7/SP7+ when using it as a tablet - The Pro 8 is the heaviest and thickest Surface Pro currently available - Still a fantastic device but yes the bezels are a little slim to use comfortably in tablet mode - I do prefer the bezel on iPad Pro, but the Pro 8 is brilliant for those who need the extra space (makes a big difference when using it as a laptop)

Spectre has an oled display, same aspect ratio as sp8, 267 ppi, great backlit keyboard with 360 degree hinge, more ports, pen and leather case included. Best part is that i saved over $800 when comparing them spec to spec.

I've always used surface devices, but the pro 8 and it's ram and storage options really balloon the price. Plus the pen and keyboard are more expensive.

I decided to get mine on the i7, 16GB, 256GB config as I wanted to get something that would last me years. I'm doing a second bachelor on engineering and this device is fantastic.
While battery life is not as good as I'm used to, coming from an iPad Pro and a Macbook Air, I'm certainly pleased at how versatile this device is (specially when its all in one device).
I do use Samsung Notes for most note taking stuff on it although I have to give OneNote a try. Its not the best but its as simple and easy to use as Notability. My other devices are now Samsung branded so I'm sort of used to the app already. Still, Xodo is my to-go PDF app.

I was considering SLS at first because of the dedicated GPU, but once I took a closer look at how capable the XE graphics inside i7 actually is (benchmarking half of the RTX 3050Ti, insane for integrated graphics!), I thought I don't really need it. I go on photography trips every other week, so a slimmer and lighter device made far more sense to me.

I love my surface pro 8 as I use it as both a main computer and a tablet for notetaking etc. I agree that the pen contacting the sp8 can be extremely audible but it is nowhere near as bad as the trackpad click. One thing about the pen that I can not stand is that the haptics tend to disappear, sometimes constantly. The shortcuts button at the end also tends to just not want to work. Disappointing. As someone who loves calligraphy, I am waiting for that someday, in a galaxy far, far away, when and where there will be a digital pen that has the feel and attributes of my good dip and fountain pens; things like different nibs, the shape, style, weight, texture, and balance of the pen body, and the ability to mimic interesting inks.
Until that time, however, I must admit that digital pens are improving, and they are handy for many tasks, but must also say that, for me, nothing else is as pleasurable to use creatively and passionately as a well made fountain pen loaded with a well-behaved, beautiful ink. . . or a well-turned dip pen and a stack of nibs thirsty for some slightly thickened ink that flows so smoothly and freely from the nib's tines onto the paper.

@@oztabletpc Hopefully we’ll get MS Journal cross-platform so we can use it on Surface Duo - Mainly just because locking down your data to one platform leaves a bad taste in my mouth - It’s OK if it’s for throwaway things like speedy notes I take in Apple Notes (Just quicker to re-open a daily note - I miss that feature from Surface Pro 3 and OneNote!)
All my “proper notes” that I need to keep have to go into OneNote because it syncs across all devices, and I have to use a range of them for my work

In my view, Windows 11 has been a step back for tablet use. My SP6 has been a great tablet and most of that comes down to having a full screen Start menu with my things organized how I like them in Windows 10. Also, Windows 11 falls short on touch targets as well. It's even harder to resize windows. Compare it to Samsung's Dex where it's easier to resize Windows with my fingers.

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  Před 2 lety +1

I did miss the old start menu. But I have re-thought my approach and I can see the benefit of simplicity here. Out of interest, are you using touch with or without the keyboard attached? I'm having trouble with touch targets on the taskbar, but everywhere else seems better to me.

@@oztabletpc Whenever I'm resizing a windows via touch, I've got the keyboard detached. It performs poorly on MY SP6 (Win 10), Book 3 (11) and Go 2 (11). For years I've brainwashed myself into making excuses for Windows, but now that I've got a Galaxy Tab S8 I now realize Microsoft has a long way to go (as far as touch targets are concerned).

As always, your videos are a staple of my digital life. I am, like you, a big fan of the surface. It is the ONLY kind of PC we have in our family - everyone has one, and I have several for different purposes.
Of course, I also use a phone and have been a Samsung Note user since the Note 8. I heard you mention that you have moved from the Note 20 (my current phone) to the Surface Duo 2.
How have you found the move, and is the Duo good enough to actually replace the Note? I absolutely love my Note 20 Ultra - just like I did the Note 10+ ...Which KI think I might have loved a little more, haha.
How have you found that transition? I am interested in the two-screen experience, but the Duo is an expensive machine, and I don't have money to burn, so I would love to hear about your journey and if that journey is complete.
Keep delivering incredible value with your videos, and I look forward to hearing something about the Duo if you have time to provide it.
    Cheers!

    • @oztabletpc
      @oztabletpc  Před 2 lety +1

I have switched to the Surface Duo 2. It's great, for work with 2 screens, but not necessarily an upgrade in other ways. If your budget is tight, stick with your Note 20 which is an awesome phone!

    • @iu1191
      @iu1191 Před 2 lety

@@oztabletpc Much appreciated - I look forward to the Duo 3 and seeing how it can actually replace a currently awesome phone. .... However I might have switched to the fold by then. The Fold 5 might come with the pen integrated and it might even come branded as the Fold Ultra. Now that would be a significant development and I think Samsung are headed that way.
If they make the fold a Note phone and they make Android 12L into what it is touted as being - the uniqueness of the Duo could be put at risk. We would have a folding screen device which can behave like a 2 screen device natively. That would be amazing and would be a natural progression from the Note device I am currently using and am loathe to be parted from. However I crave that dual screen life as I use it in almost every other sphere of my computer use and need the functionality to be as productive as I want to be.
The Duo does not yet deliver.
The Fold does not yet deliver
The most convincing offer that actually delivers in a tried and tested device, that can aid productivity with a multiple screen (or folding screen) set up is likely to get my custom ... and that of myriad other business people who need that and currently crave that functionality...right now.
I hope they nail it soon.
Fold 5 and Duo 3 ... Heaven help me...I don't want to wait till Duo 5 or Fold 7 to get this done.
On that note .... (beware - rant approaching as a rate of knots!!)
We had to wait till Surface Pro 8 before we got thunderbolt 4 and a 13 inch screen - and we had to (without explanation) give up the functionality of an SD card reader and a legacy USB-A port just to get the screen and thunderbolt capability. YEARS after others did it with less capable and much less stylish and otherwise well thought out hardware. Neither compromise seemed necessary and it hurts our use of the devices and our productivity.
I just hope they can give us the phone we need instead of giving us something that gives us most of what we want but holds some functionality or capability back just because they can.
It is a form of malpractice and NOT in the interest of customers.
Apple took away ports - only to bring them back.
They hamstrung their M1 air device making it possible to only connect ONE screen directly (even though the chip could do much more)
I don't want a deliberately hamstrung phone or Surface device.
I want devices that push the envelope of what is possible rather than hedging the bets of the company involved.
Brand loyalty deserves better than a hedge of the bets.
      8 years for a 13inch screen.
      8 years!
and it cost considerably more when it came!
I have a Surface Laptop Studio - it has so much going for it but where is the SD card reader and where are the 2 excellent USB-A ports from the device it replaces. Even Apple went on this exact dance have reversed their steps now. Why not just NOT do this and provide us with devices which do what we want and need. The Surface Laptop Studio needs to have an SD card reader and at least one USB-A port and a HDMI port to boot. Why does it not have one.
The same reason the Duo does not have better camera setup - because they have not simply decided to make it so.
All the technology to do these things is available and they have delivered all of this before now. These are NOT innovations.
Bring on the 2 screen life with every possible kink worked out and a smooth productivity enhanced life .... at least until the advent of the next dramatic technological innovation.
I am currently typing on an SB2 - I remember what it felt like in a clients office when - almost in mid sentence - I took the screen off my SB1, got up, walked across the room, and went to sit next to him to sketch out his ideas to help him be more effective. He was stunned, my colleagues were stunned and I was enabled to be the best I could be for that client who went on to achieve what he wanted. My colleagues , some of whom had SB and Surface Pro devices commented that they had never used them in that way and they saw how powerful that could be.
Those that were using Mac devices and other PC devices saw a difference - not a better or worse comparison but a capability enablement difference. I had created a mini whiteboard for the client in the moment when his process needed it and nothing had skipped a beat.
We all won BECAUSE of that incredible game changing innovation. Let's have more of that and less of this compromise ridden innovation starved halfway house situation that we find ourselves in for too many years and too many iterations!
      Rant over ...
      Feels so much better now.
      Better out than in!
      Hahah!!
      Thoughts??
