      Great point! I didn't even think about that before someone pointed it out in the comments. However, I do live in the South with no salt on the roads, so my risk was significantly diminished.

    I get a very similar metallic goop on the drain plugs for my motorcycle’s transmission and primary cases. I’m sure a part of it is that I use 85W140 gear oil in them. And Harley’s use magnetic drain plugs in all 3 holes.
    But anyway, fine metal shavings are to be expected in gear components. As long as it’s not chunks showing up, you’re good

    Our 2022 has no drain plug on the rear diff. I can see the flat metal where it should go, but the hole was never drilled. Just changed it today using a pump so i didn't have to remove the cover.

    Thanks for the video. Just did mine at 34k and was surprised how good the fluid looked with the amount of abuse my rear diff takes off road and doing dumb shit. These trucks aren’t the smoothest but knock on wood, mine’s been super tough so far.

    It has a magnet to keep the fine metal out of the fluid. This is from normal wear and tear on the gears. If you have that much though it definitely needed to be changed. I'm thinking I'll change the diff fluid and atf at 40k

  • @andyk9147

    These are dana axles and thats why they have a drain plug. Ford trucks typically don't have a drain plug but since this is a dana axles they have it now.

  • @mr.sept.5790

    Always pop the fill plug first then the drain. It would suck if you drain the fill plug gets stuck.

  • @sulblazer
    @sulblazer Před rokem +1

    I just read a few articles stating the rear diff, transmission fluid, and oil changes are top priority to change after a few thousand miles of driving in these trucks due to unrefined manufacturing of the gears can cause accelerated wear and tear on the parts if not removed sooner than later. After the initial replacement, the recommended maintenance from Ford can be followed. Whether that’s true or not…I’m not sure…but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt. My 2021 Ranger has about 15000 miles. I’m gonna change out this rear diff fluid, transmission (+the pan upgrade) before my next camping trip. Have you seen the dual catch can from Mountune? It’s $500…and uses a filter mechanism for the separation process. Still wondering if it’s worth it over the Mishimoto. That’ll be something I’ll have to sit on for a little bit longer. Micah, get some running boards for your ranger…it’ll look so good, also helps getting into the truck 😂.

    • @MicahMartinDIY
      @MicahMartinDIY  Před rokem +2

      Thanks D! I agree with your research. I don't know if I'd spend that much on a catch can. However, I'm glad that I did add mine after seeing how much gunk it catches. I see much more accumulation in colder/damp weather than in warm/dry weather, FYI. I'm still debating running boards...

    • @sulblazer
      @sulblazer Před rokem

      @@MicahMartinDIY I wound up going with the Mishi for the catch can. I live in socal’s dry warm weather, so I probably won’t get as much gunk collected as folks in wetter, humid regions. Like you, the back of my right hand got scratched up good getting to the back hose clip.
      How’s your Ranger holding up? Do you know if your Ranger engine is 2.3L with the coolant channel fix? The head gasket tends to go bad on many of the 2.3 prior to 2020 on the new model rangers because the way Ford carved the channels for the coolant. They fixed the engine coolant issue halfway through the production of the 2020 models.
      Many folks with the older engine design had head gasket going bad as soon as 30k miles.
      Also, done anything new to your truck? My bed is getting all scratched up, so next big thing will probably be a bed liner paint.

    Regarding the iron filings on the drain plug....A vast majority of that showed up during the first 1000 miles or so, when the gears first stared to mesh. In a perfect word a person should change all fluids at 1000 miles. Motor, diffs & transmssion. Considering how easy that diff fluid was to change, I would have it again a week later to really flush it out.
    Ya gotta know when to follow the oweners manual, and when not to lol.

    • @MicahMartinDIY
      @MicahMartinDIY  Před rokem

      You must be overseas, because in America, they stopped making Rangers in 2011 and started again in 2019. You should be fine with 75w90 because it is a universal diff lube, but if you can find 80-90w, you should go with that.

    great video --- be aware that the newer rangers (21 and up I think?????) dont have drain plugs so you get to do it he hard and messy way. -- anyone found out why ford says to discard the drain and fill plugs?????? any harm to reusing them??? and 75/90 vs the 80/90 ford calls for, any real difference in them? -- thanks for the video just hit 36k and planning to do this pretty soon since I tow and this truck is a keeper (really like it a lot)

    • @MicahMartinDIY
      @MicahMartinDIY  Před 8 měsíci

      That stinks that they eliminated the drain plugs! Seems like cars these days get less and less serviceable. I don't think there is any harm in reusing plugs unless they are damaged. If you're towing, I'd air on the side of higher viscosity, unless you are in a cold climate.

    You should always remove the fill plug first, not the drain plug. This is to ensure that you don't loose any fluid in case you can't the remove the fill plug for some reason. I don't mean any offense, but this is the correct sequence.

    Thanks for your video, very helpful before I tackle this job on my 2019. A few comments: It's good practice to remove the fill plug before the drain plug, just in case the fill plug won't come out, one doesn't wind up with a drained differential. Also, the Ford fluid is just $6 per quart from Rockauto, and I don''t see a point of using anything else. Ford recommends replacing the plugs, but I would also reuse them like you did to avoid waste of material and money. There is a thread seal to prevent seepage and loosening from vibration: PERMATEX 59235 Thanks again!
