My great grandfather, Joseph White, was a gunners mate operating the 5inch cannons.
My Dad was there, LT. Sterling Hutcheson
My grandfather Lloyd Harold Crane served on this ship during this battle
Great examples of blowing out the rifles after each volley!
I always look for my Uncle Butch in footage of USS NEW MEXICO from june 1944..Its been long since I last looked, forget date but when the kamikaze struck the AA battery where many were lost,BUTCH CARPENETTI (Anthony) was one of the many killed in those 2 big attacks in june I think it was.Such a shame..Was 2 brothers lost, the other with Army, lent to first Marines having trouble on that miserable hill in Okinawa.LEO C was lost there.5 brothers served, all Navy but Leo,Leo and Anthony lost.RIP to all the brothers...
U.S.S New Mexico was hit by kamikaze at Okinawa, I believe the bridge was hit killing the Captain and men on the bridge.
