My Uncle Milton, Chief Gunnery Officer, on the USS New Mexico told me about both of those kamikaze attacks. He was below deck during the Luzon attack, attempted to scramble up to his battle station experiencing horrors along the way which haunted him the rest of his life. The Okinawa attack happened as Uncle Milton was heading up to the bridge. The plane hit, blew the door to the bridge open knocking him back. All the sailors on the bridge were killed. “Why wasn’t I killed?” was the question which, again, haunted him for the rest of his life. Rest well Uncle.

My great grandfather Joseph White was on the new mexico. He's know for putting the reef out to sea during one of the reunions they held on Hawaii. He was a gunners mate on one of the 105 turrets
