    Thanks for your quick respond. I’m about 170lbs resident in Palmbay/Melbourne and my favorite local surf store is in Cocoa beach near Ron Jon famous surf store. The boat is in/out board REGAL 176SE 145hp on 6 cylinder Volvo. I’m try use the same foil equipment for behind the boat, ocean foil board and hand kite later when gain more control with the foiling board. I forgot to mention that instructor at the shop never try with 99cm before. So I’ll go for your advice as final decision.

      Hi Nelson -- so great to hear from Palmbay/Melbourne -- Good Day! Ron Jon - that is so awesome. I love it. So hitting one foil for everything is a tall task. The Regal will not be putting out much of a wake so you'll be best off foiling on the second wave. At 170lbs you'll be good on the 84cm. I'd likely recommend the FSUP package so that it comes with the 48cm rear stabilizer. You'll want to mount that foil in "B" position with the mast ~1" up from the back in the mast track. Here's why it's hard to have one foil to do it all:
      Wing Foil (I think that's what you mean by hand kite): The 84cm will be a nice foil to begin with. As a beginner you'll appreciate the lift and the carry through light winds. Eventually you'll either want a smaller foil such as the 76cm (depending upon the wind) and/or a carbon setup for lighter weight to enable better pumping.
      Prone Surf - The Slingshots are pretty heavy for prone. Most of the prone foilers are going with carbon setups from Armstrong, MFC, or the like. Turns out weight is an important component to allow you to pump back out to the lineup....hence the preference for carbon (in addition to the direct weight).
      In the Slingshot family, the Hover Glide 84cm FSUP package is a great choice. It will allow you to explore the other disciplines and help you figure out what you may want for your next foil purchase.....and yes....there will be a next. For example, I have two wings with me at all times.....sometimes four. The 84cm will give you a good price/performance point to explore the sport.
      If you wanted to go all around with carbon -- I'd recommend your Australian native company Armstrong Foils. Their HS1550 is a great all around wing. However, it is targeted at intermediate/advanced riders so I still think your entry way into foiling is through the 84cm.
      Please, please, please shoot us some pictures for our Instagram: @halflifet.5 Would love to have some great Melbourne and surrounding area shots.

    I got the 2018 fwind1 hover glide (less than 70 cm?) to windfoil with. It was really pitchy and hard to balance. I'm 6'0" at 185 pounds. So in 2020, I added the Infinity 84. It's much more stable for wind foiling and lets me get up with a 6 meter sail in 11 mph of wind versus about 15 with the fwind1. I have finally jibed the 84 and look forward to really learning more about its handling this summer. I'm using the old blue rear wing.

    Yesss! I've been anticipating this video since your last one. I might get the 99 for wing-foiling on my sup. I may try wake-foiling too. Which board would you recommend for a beginner? All I have right now is a 7'9" 150l SUP. I saw in your previous videos that larger boards make it difficult to see where your foil is in the waves.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Kevin -- Budget can always dictate.....If the 7'9" is all you have....you can make it work but it is difficult due to swing weight and seeing where you are. That said, you can try it to ensure that you enjoy it.
      I would recommend something like the Slingshot WF-2 board (www.slingshotsports.com/WF2-Wake-Foil-Board-Only). You may want to try EBay or Craigslist to see if you can get an earlier year that someone grew out of. That size and dimension is a great place to start. It really doesn't matter too much if it's 2020, 2019, or 2018 when you're getting started. Let us know what you decide and thank you so much for checking out our videos. Hopefully you subscribed! Have a great water season.

    I just got the 99 but am having a hard time getting it to come out of the the water and stabilize. I have it in position A and have to lean heavy on the back to get it up but it’s unstable. I see you have the mast in position B. Does that help with stability and lift? I’m 180 lbs and have no problem on the 76. I purchased the 99 to ride further back and behind small boats. On the 76 the speed I ride is 14 mph. I slowed the boat down to between 8 - 10 mph when I tried the 99.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před rokem +1

      At 180lb you'll have a hard time activating the 99cm. We usually recommend it for 200lb+ riders. Yes position B will help with the overall ride. A position will be quite difficult for you. You may want to consider either going to their Phantasm line up or switching to Armstrong. Feel free to call us 909-698-0401 to talk it through.

    Hey hey guys!!! Really Need to ask an important Question here!
    I have 2 set ups. 68 Gamma with 61cm mast, and 42 rear stabilizer, and the WF-2 Foil Board. I also have the 99 Infinity came with 71cm Mast and 48cm rear down wing, and this crazy ultra light pedastal that is open with cut outs but not smooth and aerodynamic like the heavy rounded/arrowhead pedastal. I also have a 90cm mast, and I have the Dwarf Micro Board. So we tried the 99cm wing with 48cm down, and 90 cm, on the micro dwarf board moved in the track forward and switch fuse in position c super long and way forward, it was impossible, could not even get up for more than 2 seconds, nearly died the Tomahawk! So now I have the wf2 foil board, normal pedastal, back down to the 71cm it came with and in the board track all the way back to get use to it!!! BUT!!!
    I have this Question!!! I am seeing on many videos, you can use the 42cm rear stabilizer wing, and that is to face up, simple, if you can see the title of the wing facing the board, it's on right.. the 48 cm goes on the bottom facing down, the 42 mounts on top facing up... so it mounts on the side the wing tips face. ...
    Is there anything wrong with the 99cm front wing, mounted in the wing for the mast, not position B on the fuse like you all have it, and then rear 42cm wing facing up like it should? or can you only use the 99cm and 84cm front wings with a matching 48cm down facing under mounted rear stabilizer ? ... so can I mis match a 42 up, and 99 down, ? If not, I need to put on the 48 and have it under mounted and down... but it was just toooooo much lift and was insane!! Gonna stay on the big wf2 board till we are solid. I guess the micro board is like for pumping only with light pedastal and not for going behind a boat. ? was insane, could not put front foot far forward enough, the wing would float up front, and rock the micro slingshot dwarf board on it's back!

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Jas -- awesome. The best to get these answers is to experiment which you did! That's great. For the 99cm - mount it in slot "B". Wing tips down regardless of the 48cm or the 42cm. Both will work. The 42cm makes it a bit looser, the 48cm more stable. I would suggest doing your early runs on the WF-2 and your 61cm mast.
      The Dwarf Micro will work with both your 68cm and 99cm setup but it's helpful to have the extra board space to work with as you balance out your 99cm....especially when you're on the 90cm mast. Remember - on the 90cm mast - you don't have to fly it high...start with only 1/2 mast out of the water and work your way up as you get comfortable. The design intent for the 90cm is more winging, kiting, and windsurf foiling. It's fun behind the boat but just watch your height. You can see a video on it here: czcams.com/video/4zF0NJcZMYM/video.html
      I'm not sure what you mean by Aerodynamic like heavy rounded.....(do you mean the shim? or the wing cap?)
      Let me know if you'd like to do a Zoom lesson. It can be helpful for optimizing the setup and for me to break down your riding for tips.

    Does the 84 ride the ski boat wake as well as the 99? I’m about 185lbs and have a boat similar to the crossover ski/wake boat. I was going to go with the 99 to make sure I had enough lift for a smaller wake, but looks like the 84 might work too.

      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před rokem +1

      The 99cm will hold it a bit better but it's very slow to carve. You'll have more fun on the 84cm. Even more fun on an Armstrong MA1750 or CF2050 -- call us to talk if you'd like (909)698-0401

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +3

      Hi Allan -- Sorry for the delay in responded. You bet...and if you send me video of your wake, we're happy to take a look. For the second wake (especially in non wake boats = smaller waves) you really want to adjust your speed to maximize the size of the center hump. In this video, Eric (driver) was .5 to 1mph too fast which caused the wave to begin to take a more vertical shape. The ridge line is the beginning of the wave shape becoming a "V". When you see that form, it's harder for the foil to keep up with the boat, and wave transfers become more of a challenge. Slow the boat down to avoid the "V" and try to get a big hump directly behind the boat. In most cases that correlates with a steeper 2nd wave face.
      Hope that helps. Thank you for checking out our video and apologies again for the slow response. We were out on the water!

      At205lb behind a jet ski -- I recommend the Armstrong CF2050 Foil kit. Email us to discuss - halflifet.5@gmail.com

      If you stay Slingshot with just a SeaDoo -- 99cm but be aware - it doesn't match the options above.

    Quick question on mast size - I'm about 6'1", 205 - brand new to foiling and I want to ride behind a jet ski, ski boat and wake surf boat (Axis) - what size mast would you recommend - I'm leaning toward that 90 centimeter on the 99 - most packages appear to be recommending the 24" mast - your thoughts

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      What's up BaDaBoom! Thank you for checking out our video. You may also enjoy the 90cm mast (how to ride) review. czcams.com/video/4zF0NJcZMYM/video.html. Thank you for subscribing!
      At 205 and new to the sport here's my recommendation on Slingshot foil size:
      - Jet Ski (definitely 99cm)
      - Ski Boat (with ballast or not?) - no ballast 99cm. ballast 84cm.
      - Axis surf boat 84cm all the way. 76cm once you've gotten good at riding comfortably without the rope.
      As for the mast. 90cm mast is difficult to learn on. My preference for learning is the 46cm mast. You can do transfers, first wave or second wave on the 46cm (18"). At $77 it's a nice piece to be able to trade in/out in the context of your overall purchase. Ultimately I'd recommend the 61cm or the 71cm. It's not a material difference. This gives you some nice travel to add a few power pumps to move you across the wake on transfers as well as to regain the wave when you lose it. The 90cm isn't necessary behind the boat.

  • @Justin-bw8zi
    @Justin-bw8zi Před 4 lety +1

    Have you tried the 90 cm mast with the 84 wing? Do you prefer the 90cm to the 61cm for wake surfing? The extra vertical would appear to be fun for more pumping/transfer room but the trade-off I'm assuming is in stability.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Justin -- Yes - I have....and....I've tried the 71cm on the 84cm as well :-). They are all fun and excel in their own way. Ultimately - the 46cm is great when you're starting and can take you most everywhere you want to go. The 61cm gives you more travel and once you've mastered the 46cm it will allow you to accelerate via pump at a greater velocity. The delta of 71cm to 61cm is relatively small from a performance perspective and they ride about the same. Unless you're taking the 90cm to the full extension (which feels quite high) you're going to get everything you need out of the 61cm or 71cm. All of that said -- if you got the masts give them all a try to see what your favorite is!

    Love your videos. Remind people to have the stabilizer on the bottom facing down for both 84 and 99. I tried the 84 with a beginner and found that they got thrown off the board trying to manage such a big wing. Best progression was a small wing first day, medium space skate day 2, 84 day three. Wahat worked for you guys?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi George! We actually have a video that we'll publish within a few days about that exact thing -- Rear wing stabilizer choice and mounting.
      Regardless of wing progression - the number one thing an instructor can do is be a phenomenal driver. This video covers it well: czcams.com/video/nX6KnJiMUuA/video.html
      When we do our lessons for first time foilers we walk them through a progression. 1) 15" mast w/ H4 all the way back in the track. 2) 84cm (men) 68cm (women) on 61cm mast. Foot position and weight distribution is the key to keep the foil in the water. We don't use the space skate because it is a kite foil wing - not a wake wing.
      Hope that helps. Sounds like you have it covered but just in case we do Zoom video lessons which are quite effective. You send us video and we break it down together and utilize our vast library of videos to illustrate instructional points.

      HALF-LIFE Thanks Tim. I will follow on insta. I'll send a video of a floating dock start. It is an easy way to figure out how to ride the board. First without a foil, then with a foil. When you fall we let you try the water start. My wife Lisa is a great driver.
      Another thing that I do is launch a kite from the water with the student sitting in an inner tube behind the boat. Nothing for them to hit. We can give a little Gas to help the launch. As soon as the kite is up they hop or pop out of the tube.

      Hi Jerry -- please feel free to give us a call (909) 698-0401. We've heard of a few people losing their foil kits to the bottom. Most of the time it is from using the shorter screws in mounting (they look like the longer ones). But one slingshot customer in particular has lost too kits in the manner you outline.
      On a whole the Armstrong titanium screws seem to be stronger but I definitely don't go out and run into floating objects to see if they sheer off :-). That said, check out the mast T-nuts that are used. They're hard core and my bet is that if only one of them remained, it would be enough to keep the mast on the board. Armstrong's construction and thoughtfulness in design is top in the industry right now. Happy to talk you through it. And...if you're son wants to come ride them with us on Lake WA - just shoot us a note at halflifet.5@gmail.com.

      Hi IRWE905 -- thank you for the compliments on the videos. Very much appreciated.
      I'm not sure of the application for jump/pump/glide because those are pretty different and depends on boat and some other factors.
      Assuming a big wake surf wake:
      Glide: Hover glide 84cm
      Jump: 68cm infinity
      Pump: Move to Armstrong Foils HS1550V2, HS1850 or to Axis 1150. We prefer the Armstrong because it still turns wicked good in the waves.

      A couple quick questions:
      1) What boat will you be foiling behind?
      2) How much do you weigh?
      3) Are you trying to prone foil surf with the same setup?

      Hi Nelson -- I'm pretty sure I already replied to you but just in case....The 84cm will work great for you. If you'd like the 99cm - it will work as well. Given the smaller wave of the Regal the 99cm may be a bit better.....that said...the 84cm is versatile enough to make that work. I know.....not that helpful but you're right on the borderline with that boat. Beginners like the 84cm better.....For small waves - I like the 99cm better.

    Thanks for all the info Tim. I have a specific question for you that could really use some guidance on: 230lb rider trying to ride ropeless behind Yamaha 195 s jetboat. Would you recommend the 99 or 84, and is it necessary to get the 48cm rear wing or can I run it with my current 42cm rear wing. (Current board set up is on the 65cm space skate). Thank you!

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 2 lety

      Wow Neil! The 65cm space skate is not going to work for you so if you're having a hard time going ropeless - don't let it get in your head. The issue with the jet boat is two fold 1) a bit of a messy wave and 2) the turbulence from the jet. That said - we've foiled behind them and had a lot of fun - especially with some extra ballast bags.
      If budget is flexible - I'd recommend you move over to the Armstrong HS1850 foil kit with a CF300 tail wing. If you want to pursue this option - call us at (909) 698-0401. Assuming you want to stay in the Slingshot family - I'd likely go with the 99cm with the 48cm. You can run it with your 42cm which will help it be more loose but you'll lose some of the stability and glide. Foils - and how they ride - change in the ~210lb + range. There's a ton of athletic guys in your space -- a rider that you may have seen in our videos and social media (@halflifet.5 on instagram) is 6'3" and 230lb. We use him as our test point for various equipment. That plus our customer base that ranges from 120lb -- 270lb.
      Thank you for checking out our videos. Please don't hesitate to call if you decide to go Armstrong.

We can certainly hook you up with a demo on the 84cm and the 99cm so that you know what you're buying before spending the money. Drop us a note when you're in Seattle. I'd love to see some Skyski videos - send them our way halflifet.5@gmail.com.
      To answer your question about distributor - it's a little complex. We do a ton of research on various products so we feel comfortable going direct. So for foil products we go direct to Slingshot and Armstrong. We buy GoFoil through Hi-Tech in Maui. For kites - Cabrinha from our contact in Baja and Slingshot direct. I know....a bit of a messy answer. Regardless - we're here for you and can help guide the process for wake foil as well as kiteboarding. My first kites (which I still use today) are Cabrinha Switchblade. Super versatile from beginner to intermediate - can't go wrong. For larger sizes we use the Cabrinha Contra (13, 15, 17). The Slingshot RPM is a great all around kite to start with as well. You'll want to look at typical wind conditions where you'd like to kite. If it's Jetty - you will likely want the Contra which is a good light wind kite. I know cost is definitely a consideration but starting with a two kite quiver may make sense so that you're not stranded on the beach when conditions change as they're known to do.....especially around Seattle.

      Hi Caspar -- we do enjoy the Slingshot foils but there are some limitations. We still use one of them for lessons but for our riding we've switched over the Armstrong due to a higher level of performance. The lightweight carbon, carving, and ability to pump currently out performs the Slingshot. All of that said -- the Slingshot is a great foil kit to begin the wake foil journey with. I purchased at first the slingshot with 76 foil but as I weigh 200lbs I found that I couldn't let go of the rope. I then got the 84cm but im still struggling to let go of the rope and have enough power to propel me along... im just wondering what im doing wrong? I can ride this board easy with the rope no problem but im really wanting to let go of the rope.
    there are so many adjustments from mast size to different positions im wondering if I have something set up wrong,
    sorry for the ling winded post.. many thanks Luke!

      Hi Luke -- thanks for watching our videos - glad they're helpful and hopefully you're a subscriber!
      The jet boats are a bit strange in terms of propulsion as it hits the foil. It's manageable but something to know is different than the push of the typical wave. With the jet boats I've found the first wave to typically be better than the second in terms of push.
      Have you tried the first wave?
      The 84cm w/ you at 200lbs should work well.
      What mast length are you on? Any of them should work but with a smaller wave (as with the jet boat) having the 61cm or 71cm will help you out.

      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Patrick - thanks so much for checking out our video and subscribing to our channel! Welcome to Half-Life!
      At 200lbs I'd recommend the Hover Glide 84cm behind the boat. (but just to be certain - what boat will you be foiling behind?)
      For winging - where will you typically be winging? Is the wind somewhat steady or highly variable? The 84cm is a good choice (It's what I'm learning on here on Lake Washington where the wind is typically up/down) but the 99cm will work on lower speeds and wind levels. BTW - winging is a blast.

    • @patrickreid9823
      @patrickreid9823 Před 4 lety +1

      HALF-LIFE thanks for the input. Boat is 24’ with a deep V hull so will be lots of wake. I’m in Vancouver, BC and will be winging on the ocean, typical rolling southwestern swells in the 20 kt range coming off straight of Georgia into Howe Sound.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Nice! Our neighbor to the North! Sometimes with Deep V hulls it kicks off a more vertical wake -- although plenty of wake, it comes off the boat more parallel to the boat as opposed to slightly more perpendicular such as a wake boat (of course we're talking directionally). All of that said, the second wave should be able to set up nicely. With that knowledge - I'm going to stick with the 84cm recommendation.
      The Grady White in this video is a 24' deep V up until the 1:52 mark (czcams.com/video/yOzgYjD6E6k/video.html). After that it's a 33' Grady White. As you'll see, the first wake is challenging - tight window (not to mention outboards!), while the second wave on the foil really opens things up.
      20 knots! Perfect. So you're likely looking at a 4.0 to 4.4m meter wing. With that windspeed you should be good to go on the 84cm. Here's a rough wind sizing chart for wing sizes.
      3.2M - 23-43 MPH
      4.0M - 15-30 MPH
      4.4M - 13-26 MPH
      5.4M - 10-22 MPH
      6.4M - 8-20MPH

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Steve -- haha - I saw that as well. In fact my friend Doug lost his wing by making the mistake they are talking about. Always be very careful to ensure that the screws you use to go into the mast are the longer ones. They're identical in every way except the length. Where he says 1-2 threads....it actually goes about 3-4 threads...just secure enough to have you believe it's in. For the 84cm - yes 'B' position for wakefoiling is what I've found to be best. That said - if for some reason it isn't working for you, feel free to explore. Easy enough to move to A and then back to B - just use the correct screws! Hope you're well.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi George -- happy to have a conversation and put in an order for you. You're absolutely right that a huge foil provides you with different capabilities than a small foil. It's all about what that feel is going to be as you ride it. For example at 140lb - the 99cm is a big wing for you. What that translates to is that you'll have a harder time carving it, it will be slower moving through the water, and less responsive. All of that said - for a 15ft boat with a 50hp outboard - that might be the right call. The larger the wing (as a general rule - not absolute rule) the smaller the wave you can ride. You on the 99cm would do great on that wake. Arguably - you'd do great on the 84cm as well. The 84cm is MUCH more responsive than the 99cm. You really need to commit to change direction on the 99cm. Ultimately - all of these wings are a blast to ride so don't over think it too much. The 76cm is doable but with that small of a wake you'll have more fun on the 84cm or 99cm. In the Armstrong Foil family - the HS1850 would be the call for you.

      Hi Whetim! So - I assume you got the SUP foil board to SUP foil in the ocean. What board did you get for yourself? How many Liters? Typical size waves? I reserve the right to change my answer based upon the above :-)
      I'd recommend the 84cm.
      Trade offs: 84cm is a quick raising foil. depending upon wave size you may have to work to hold it down. But once you're up it carves nicely and will be much more responsive than the 99cm.
      99cm is more stable and will hold the glide longer. It raising more slowly given you a more stable lift off but it will not give you the surf carve feel as well as the 84cm.
