- Are you new to Wakefoiling? Understanding which hydrofoil wing is right for you can be confusing and intimidating. In this Wakefoil (Wake foil wing size) buying guide we take a new foilboarder onto the water and get his reaction to the Slingshot Hover Glide 99cm, Slingshot Hover Glide Infinity 84cm, and the Slingshot Hover Glide 76cm foil wing sizes. Experienced riders can make them all work but if you're coming up the curve, will it be easier to learn How To Wake Foil on the 84cm, 99cm, or 76cm HoverGlide? It depends. Be sure to stick around to the end to see the wrap up and specific recommendation on which hydrofoil wing size is right for you.
Please don't hesitate with any questions that you may have around the wakefoil buying guide for beginners, How to Wakefoil, which wing may work best for you, or any conversation around foilboards.
We'd really appreciate it if you would subscribe to our channel and follow us on Instagram and Facebook @halflifet.5.

hi there! i'm coming to seattle next week (tuesday) with some coworkers and we'd love to come foil with you guys!
That would be killer. Best way to reserve time is to ping us at halflifet.5@gmail.com Would be a blast. Where are you from?
The Half-Life Crew
I live in Kenmore as far north on the lake as possible! See you out there!
Awesome! Welcome to Half-Life! I was foiling in Juanita bay this past weekend. Not quite Kenmore but up your direction.
Shoot us some pics to post on Instagram @halflifet.5
I windfoil on the i84, weigh 175 pounds and absolutely love it. It's stable, I don't need much board speed to get up on foil. You can easily adjust fight hight by adjusting your weight forwards or backwards. It's a blast!
Hi wind probe! awesome - great to hear. What windfoil (windsurfing foil) board do you use? What body of water are you windfoiling on?
I use the Slingshot foil on the Slingshot Dialer 130L board. I have had 9 sessions so far and the addiction has taken place now. I foil on Klamath Lake, Oregon, and Odell Lake, Oregon.
@@windprobe7264 Nice! I've actually been on both of the lakes. Very cool -- I imagine you get out to the gorge as well.
Yes, I do a Hood River trip once a year.
@@windprobe7264 Nice! We're hoping to get some windfoiling footage together in the coming weeks. If you have anything you're willing to share we'd love see it. You can email us at halflifet.5@gmail.com
Just subscribed to learn about foiling in more detail. Went to an event on tapps with Seattle Boat watched one of the pros Brian Grubb on his foil. WOW! It was pretty rad! So I guess I'm gonna do some youtube'n to see what this is all about!
Right on Schneble -- why don't you book a lesson with us on Lake WA and we'll get you rolling. Email us at halflifet.5@gmail.com --- welcome to the foiling addiction!
Best,
Tim
Great vid guys!
Can't wait to get out of confinement to go try our 76 foil on lake Geneva!!
Hey Nick - great to hear from you. Can't wait to see some footage from Lake Geneva. So cool!
Awesome video! So informative!
Thanks Justin -- we had a fantastic person to try out the wings!
Hi, we noticed in the videos that the stabilizer is tip down on the 84 cm but tip up on the 76 cm and the 99 cm. Can you explain why? The directions on our Slingshot set up has the tips up? We have four foils, the 68 cm, the 76 cm, the 84 cm and the 99 cm as we have a large group of varying sizes foiling (we have two boards). For our beginners, we have them watch your how to videos as they are VERY detailed and we find that by taking the time to watch your videos our beginners are more successful. Not sure why we didn't catch the stabilizer part before, LOL. Thank you for your hard work on those videos!
I'm about 230, what do yall recommend? 84 or bigger?(well maybe I should watch until the end of the video.. ) Oh, I'm in the seattle area and would love to connect with you on the foils.
Hi Superdesmo -- at 230lb you could go either with the 99cm or the 84cm depending upon a few factors. Please feel free to email us @ halflifet.5@gmail.com.
What foil would you recommend for a lighter rider behind a jetski?
Hi Jim -- need to know a bit more. Is Jet Ski the only wave? or will you be towing into passing boats, ocean waves, or other? Feel free to email us at halflifet.5@gmail.com
Best,
Tim
I just started to learn wing foil with 99, on a 140L Board. Should I place the foil all the way back when mount to the board, as you did in the video? My foil is in position B
Hi Li -- most likely. Some of it depends upon your weight and conditions. Feel free to email us at halflifet.5@gmail.com and we'll engage in a full conversation.
Best,
Tim
Great vid I’m 6-2 about 175 pound long leg tall and skinny. Just starting to wakefoil with a friends advance foil and it’s squirrelly. What set up would you reccomend for me? I’m a 50 year old guy 😜
What's up ole timer! haha - You're right in the sweet spot of all of us who are looking to learn a new sport. That's awesome and you'll love foiling.
Out of curiosity - what setup did your friends have?
What boat will you be riding behind?
Assuming you have a boat with a decent wave, you choose between the Slingshot 76cm that comes with their wakesurf v3 foil package. You're other option is to go with the FSUP package which includes the 84cm wing. The trade off....the 76cm will be a bit more responsive, the 84cm will have more glide. Either way you can't go wrong.
Please tell us the boat you're behind and we'll confirm the recommendation. Also - tell us more about 'squirrelly' so we can throw in a riding tip or two!
We alternate between our g23 and my friends g23 paragon. I’m not sure if the board is squirrelly or if I just need to figure out the speed - some videos say to pull very slow - I’ve tried slow and a little faster - about 11.5. Will take any tips you are willing to share - thanks you.
Hi Kurt! Both of those boats are fantastic with plenty of wave for the 76cm. I'd recommend starting with the 76cm as your starting setup.
If you haven't found it yet - here's our playlist on how to wakefoil: czcams.com/play/PLX8JNpzm5TVstDxHuWvSRyza-2_HtVmZG.html
Speed for foiling, once you have your feet under you, is ~10.5-11.5. The G23 will throw a nice wake at either speed. Here's a few recommendations:
- Empty the ballast and/or go on a boat with a smaller wake for the first time you get up.
- 'Hit it' extremely gently and proceed to ~5mph. This lets you get a feel for being on the board with it mostly connected to the water.
- Have the driver keep it slow (5-7mph) until you elevate. Try this on a wakeboard length rope so you can comfortably be either behind the boat or just outside of the wake (second wave).
- Once you can control the elevation, slowly increase the speed to 10.5mph (try to be outside of the wake)
Watch the full progression of our videos from 'how to fall' (very IMPORTANT), to foot position, to elevate and turn, and the rest and you'll be on your way.
Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for all the detail!
No problem. Please let us know how it goes.
May I please come out to try these wings?!
Hi Kramer -- are you in the Seattle area? We can definitely make a demo day happen but I'll need some additional info from you. Please email Tim at halflifet.5@gmail.com.
HALF-LIFE Yes, I’m in Seattle. I’ll shoot you an email.
Perfect. I’ll get back to you Friday with some options.
Love your channel! Wanting to buy a wake foil not sure what direction to go? Our boat doesn’t throw a huge wake, small guy 155 lbs, Im a decent wake surfer/wake boarder. What do you recommend?
Hi Wes - I’d recommend Slingshot 76cm wf-1 package. If it’s a super small wake (eg jetski) you may consider the 84cm. At your weight either should do great.
What is the number referring to? Wingspan or cord? Or something else?
You'll find the full Slingshot line up here: www.slingshotsports.com/slingshot-foil/
Sorry I mean Justin. And what kind of dry suit is he wearing?
Pretty awesome Dry Suit right? That is the Ocean Rodeo -- out of Canada.
Justin's 200lbs. Note the 76 was on a 61cm mast vs. the 84 on the 46cm mast so to be fair it was not a strict A|B test as we were changing more than one variable at the same time :). I liked the 76, but prefer the 84. The dry suit (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) is from Ocean Rodeo (Vancouver company - fantastic suit). One obvious lesson, when you are beginner you are going to be in the water the majority of time so dress extra warm in the early months of the year :)
I’m pulling on the Chesapeake bay behind an outboard engine - what distance and speed is ideal?
Hi Dan - That is awesome! I'd love to see a couple pictures for us to post on our instagram: @halflifet.5.
For an outboard engine, please make sure you're always safe.
That said.....all boat hulls are slightly different which will impact the speed you want to go. If you're going with the rope - go with a standard length ski or wakeboard rope. If you're just beginning go at a slow speed to work on your get up and ability to control elevation (~6-8mph). Normal speed for you will be between 10 and 12 mph. With an outboard you'll want to play with speeds to maximize the wake. It's most likely that you'll want to ride the second wave. If you haven't already - check out our Wake Foil Alaska video -- we're foiling behind a zodiac with an outboard engine. Please don't hesitate to reach out with additional questions. Have a great time on the water. Would love to see what foiling on Chesapeake Bay looks like.

but how much does he weigh??
Rider pictured in the thumbnail is ~190LB. Feel free to email us halflifet.5@gmail.com if you want to dialogue on foils that might work for you.

@@HALFLIFEVIDEO I got the 84 cm wing (210 lbs)
What’s Jason’s weight? I’ve been on the H4 only. The 84 really that much difference?
Justin is right about 200lbs. The H4 and 84cm do ride differently. Do you have anyone near you where you could try the 84cm out?
HALF-LIFE no such luck. Probably only saw a few others last summer even foiling. It’s our “go to” fun behind our Bennington. Sold the Mastercraft once kids left for the real world! Thanks for your videos again!!!
@@jstephenwilson465 Thanks Steve. I do have a friend with the H4 but I haven't ridden it for over a year. I'll do two things -- 1) Ping Slingshot and 2) post a short Instagram video about the comparison after I ride them both. It may take a week or two. Sound good? I think we look at the delta in size between the H4, the 84cm, and the 99cm so that you get the perfect wing for the Bennington.
btw -- the Instagram account is @halflifet.5 -- same on Facebook so if you're not on Instagram just look up @halflifet.5 on Facebook -- all of the Instagram posts funnel through there as well.
HALF-LIFE that would be great. I’m around 205 and think the 84 will be the ticket.
It sucks I can’t post a v3
Hey Kelly -- not really sure what you're saying...
HALF-LIFE oh I am loving my v3 and was unable to post videos
We are on the river in Parker and having so much fun with the slingshot
