    I believe that they should have added a HUD in-front of the driver seat, because it will still be a-bit distracting to look on the right all the time to see the speed.

    • @alexblok4804
      @alexblok4804 Před 7 lety +26

      For some reason, HUDs in cars have never taken off. I remember helping advise a friend by a new car over 15 years ago, a Nissan of some sort. It had a superb HUD - dead centre above drive's position on the windscreen and therefore in the field of vision of the road. But they didn't keep that option on future models. Perhaps they are effected by sunlight, reflections etc? Or perhaps the projection tech is not that reliable yet?

    • @zimo193
      @zimo193 Před 7 lety +4

      Alex Blok maybe it was not reliable in the past but with new technology, I believe it works fine. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Chevrolet have HUD and it works fine from what I see.

    People don't seem to realize that the UI is optimized strictly for the car. It's not like a glued on iPad trying to do 1000 things. the functions are very specific

    • @NeeP94
      @NeeP94 Před 7 lety +31

      still it takes me less time to open the glove box with one movement of my hand instead of going through the menu to search for the option. Especially if i'm maybe in a different part of the menu or in another app. And no speed meter sucks cuz looking sideways to the screen is distracting and dangerous and does hurt your neck...

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před 7 lety +7

      Agree with glovebox, at that point it's just showing off and not making it any cheaper or better, completely pointless.
      But there have been cars where all instruments are in the middle of the dashboard. Lancia Ypsilon has had that for 20 years now, and i mean they redesigned the car 4 times in the meanwhile, and kept middle instruments, so apparently this quirk hasn't annoyed enough people for them to change. The owners say it's "not as bad as it initially seems", no issues apart from your annoying passengers being even more annoying. An advantage of centre instruments is that they allow the speedo to be higher up so you really need to move your eyes less. Citroën C4 and FIAT Idea also have centre speedo.
      If i were to bet, i think Tesla will introduce a speedo HUD option, where it gets projected right onto a shaded portion of the windscreen just for the driver,

    • @NeeP94
      @NeeP94 Před 7 lety +1

      Siana Gearz if they release a HUD for the speed that would be fine! That would be a great solution. But else, orientating on cheap crap companies like Fiat and Citroën doesn't help much in my opinion. I always disliked their design language. Ofc this is a personal thing so everyone might have a different opinion on the design...

    • @sarevok6
      @sarevok6 Před 6 lety +45

      In most cars, if something goes wrong in engine... you're F'd. Anything goes wrong with radiator/alternator/hoses/belts/spark plugs you will be boned. I forgot a ton of garbage too. I'll take a car that doesn't rely on millions of explosions(and hoping those explosions don't hurt anything) to get around.

    • @theazn07
      @theazn07 Před 6 lety +10

      except if something goes wrong with a part of a car, the other parts still work. if something goes wrong with the touch screen, it's like you can't drive, play music, turn the AC on, open your windows, nothing

      You're exaggerating by alot, There's no comparison with a TESLA and a regular car but he brings up a good point if one thing goes wrong with that touchscreen you lose almost all functionality from the car.

    • @RandySpeer
      @RandySpeer Před 5 lety +16

      false. if something goes wrong with the screen, the car functions as normal, you just dont have visual feedback and can't make certain adjustments, but everything you mentioned above works as normal. AC would continue as is, as would acceleration and braking, and wipers and turn signals and parking and reverse, and music, etc.

    • @philipprudolf235
      @philipprudolf235 Před 7 lety +6

      but not for the boot lid because this is simpler by hand... it's not simple it's just cheap but a nice way to phrase it

    • @Sketcher0204
      @Sketcher0204 Před 7 lety +43

      Except in this case, software is making a task more complicated. Do you also want software to open your laptop lid? How about to open a jar of peanut butter? Or to unzip your backpack? Some things just don't need software because it's easier and faster to do by hand.

    • @johnpyp
      @johnpyp Před 7 lety +4

      Its faster til the software becomes faster... It used to be faster to do math problems by hand, then calculators turned from multi-room hulks of machines to pocket devices and it became faster to do it with software. In this case, it is faster by hand, but your analogy is misguided.

    • @Sketcher0204
      @Sketcher0204 Před 7 lety +7

      Hydr0sity - A calculator is only faster for more complicated calculations. I can add 2 + 2 in my head faster than you can enter it into a calculator. And opening a glove box is as simple as adding 2 + 2. Using software for such a simple task only adds steps it takes to complete the task. What if I want to get into the glove box while the car is off? I need to turn the car on and wait for the touchscreen to boot up first? What if I want to get into the glove box while the car is charging and simply cannot turn it on at that time? Certain tasks just simply do not require software and adding it only makes things more complicated.

Essentially owners will be able to have there cars earn them money while they’re not using them. Having the glovebox open via the display means they will easily be able to lock it while the car is in ride share mode.

But, it also means the barrier of entry is smaller, and when those who are on a tight budget gets the money. They can spend it on the upgrade later down the road without worrying too much. I can't really argue that it lacks features though. Most of the information is just more centralized if anything.

The way you explained the simplicity of not having to many options and variance is what will make the car more affordable and more profitable for the company, for example when I go to "In- out" burger their menu is the most straightforward menu of any fast food restaurant, If I go to Burger King I am overwhelmed with the different combos and variations of a flame grilled burger.

      jalenroc rich not having a heads up display at the very least seems weird. Like, these cars will be quick (obviously because electric), and if you haven't checked your speed, you could look up and be well over the speed limit and not even know. Heads up display is literally a projector, wouldn't cost a lot to add it as an extra.

      Max people keep acting surprised by Tesla making it like that but what's really crazy is how unreliable they are. Even mkbhd has had problems with his model s. I don't doubt a lot of these screens will break.

    • @Sketcher0204
      @Sketcher0204 Před 7 lety +3

      Falco2k11 - Lifetime warranty is good, but if the screen isn't working, you can't even drive it to the garage to get it fixed. I shouldn't have to tow my car just for a non-functioning touchscreen.

    • @davedeboy5726

      And this has only happened twice when a passenger punched the screen because the owner wouldn't let the passenger drive it.

  • @anarqst
    @anarqst Před 7 lety +174

    How come Tesla gets a pass for the single touchscreen which you have to go through for just about everything but (for example:) Honda eliminates the volume knob and puts it on a touchscreen and everyone hates them for it? Is it just the fact that Tesla has a single cohesive design philosophy whereas a mass market company like Honda has to continue to offer things gradually otherwise their loyal customers will reject it?

      I honestly don't mind that everything goes through the screen. The main problem I have with it is that the interior is kinda ugly and also no spedo in the middle. Not that I'm constantly looking down to see the speed I am going in my car but I dont know it doesn't feel right.
      I can't even afford this car wtf am I even saying rn.
      Edit: Yes I think you hit the nail on the head. Tesla makes Teslas. Honda makes cars. I don't mean it in a snobby way but you know.

      @BjorckBengt Před 7 lety +14

      Yes, most likely Tesla customers are more comfortable with new tech. This will be a struggle for other automakers to enter the EV scene. Tesla are grabbing their advanced customers and they are left with the most conservative buyers who soon have bought their last car.

      A one time $5000 fee for your car to drive you around as long as you own it, is pretty bad ass. Being in an unknown big city, crazy traffic and the car not only knows where its going itll drive there for you. Id take the $5000 auto drive option over heated leather electric seats that other cars offer any day.

      Great for drivers who don't really want it, but sure enough, still great if they decide to sell their cars, and the next owner wants it. Instead of buying a full opt car, you pay less, and next owner can pay for if if needed.

      It's min $10k for full self driving capability. And the car isn't even capable of doing that right now. It might in the future but it doesn't even really match it's basic autopilot features of 2 years ago.

    Great video Marques! One thing to note. Tesla's don't use Lidar (light based depth sensing) for autonomy, only Radar (radio-wave based depth sensing). The former is much more expensive, data-intense, and (as viewed by Tesla) shows little to gain over radar.
