- This Costco Mountain Bike Has Me SOLD! The intense 951 XC is basically the intense Sniper Trail but in a lower-spec version. So what is the 951 series? Well basically as near I can tell it's an intense entry-level line that is sold thru Costco.com and their website. They seem to essentially be a rebranded intense sniper trail and an intense primer 29. Like I said you can order them direct or costco.com . However, what is even better is that you can pick up the returns from Costco at a nice little discount on the intense 951 site.

Great review! I'd like to see you review the 951 trail to compare the two.
"Shram"? Is that Yiddish for SRAM?
@@littlejackalo5326 Ha! I catch myself saying it the yiddish way myself đ€·ââ
Good review. I have fallen into the over-tire over-bike trap. But, hey, you don't know until you know. Then when you find that fast tire combo and rig you're in freaking heaven.

Just ordered this bike today. Costco had $1,000 off, and I thought it was too good to pass up. Paid $ 1,937.24, with tax. Should arrive by Tuesday March 5, 2024. Stoked!
Not gonna lie, Iâm tempted to order the trail version haha
Me too, I paid $1970.99 out the door. XL was the only size available. I'm 6' 0", hope it fits. Another CZcamsr says they run small and not to worry.
@@georgekrpan3181 I'm 6'0 as well, and looking at this bike (full price). How did the XL work for you?
@@endorice I've been too busy to take it to the dirt but I have ridden it on the street a few times with my buddies on their road bikes. It's a bit of a stretch to the bars but I think that's appropriate for an XC bike. At any rate, on the street the fit is fine and I could pedal it very well.
I used to overbike/tire where I rode a full squish with DHR and DHF and after a while, I figured out that for my riding, I didnât need the most hardcore things. As much as Iâd like to think I could ride like the people I see on CZcams. I ended up doing a hard tail build with just XC tires and Iâm having more fun riding now since itâs my tempo.
I so completely agree! One thing i found funny out here in my area, is that on alot of our downhill segments, most of the fastest people are on full XC Bikes with XC Tires! I just started a little experiment, I put Kenda Booster Pros which are completely XC tires on my primer. Lets see how this goes! haha
After owning the same bike for 3 months, Iâm loving it! Finally dialed in suspension for aggressive trail riding. Upgraded front rotor to 203mm, and transferred front rotor to rear. Swapped to Kenda Hellkat 2.4 ATCs for winter riding in Santa Cruz, Ca for better mud traction. Itâs become a very playful and confidence inspiring ride!
Other than chainring, cassette and rear hub, I plan on keeping this bike mostly unmodified. I did purchase the ârefurbishedâ model direct from Intense, which was 99.5% perfect when I put it together. This is my first mtb after a 10 year hiatus off from riding and compliments my XC racing roots beautifully,
Awesome to hear! Congrats on coming back to riding after such a long break. đ€
You live in Santa Cruz yet don't own a Santa Cruz bike? Shame
/S
Awesome review! Really appreciate what intense did with the 951 Series. They are getting back to the basics and showing you donât need a âsuper bikeâ to have fun!
Thanks! Yeah you really don't need to do much to this bike. Wouldn't stop me from upgrading it though haha.
Killer review! I saw one of these on the trails last weekend and was really curious what the details were behind it. Looked like a great bike, so it was cool to hear your run down and experience on it.
Thanks Rich! I'll be getting my hands on the Trail version here shortly.
Man this was a solid review! And you can genuinely see how much you love this bike.
You got me so curious to hop on one now! âđŒđ€đŒ
Thanks Adam!
I've been raving about my 951 XC to my riding buddies. It's my first carbon fiber frame but not my first 29, so although the 29er wheels definitely help with the speed so does the weight and suspension of this amazing bike. Got mine from Costco last year the same week they announced it, I wanted the Trail version but it was out of stock for more travel, but don't regret getting the XC at all. Handles the New England gnar well enough for me!
Thanks Awesome!
Totally I bought an intense sniper xc which is the same frame basically and absolutely LOVE it, bravo really to Intense for making a fantastic complete bike at a reasonable price point to the masses.
The sniper xc is a lot of fun also!
Thanks! I use the under downtube mount to carry a water bottle tool kit on my Intense Primer.
Nice!
I have the trail version of this bike and I love it. The only complaints that I have are hub engagement and the tires. The tires are personal choice and only a problem because of the terrain I ride on. I replaced them with 2.5" Assegai tires and it's very planted now. I almost want to swap the hub out. It tends to be more of a problem when I'm tired and riding in slightly lower gears.
Yeah the hubs and rims are something that eventually need to be replaced in my opinion.
Nice Video my bro!!!! Loved all the knowledge and the points you make us think about. Good stuff
Thanks Mark!
My local Intense dealer says the carbon frame is a lower level carbon than on the Sniper and Primer. But it is still carbon so better than aluminum.
Also the bottle mount on the bottom of the frame can be used as a mechanical bottle. I use my under frame mount for storage of necessary mechanical parts...extra air chargers, rag, tire levers, bike tool, patches, extra master link and the like. Keeps my pack lighter and lowers the center of gravity a little bit. Doesn't matter if it gets dirty and can also possibly provide a little protection from damage.
Good call on the bottom mount đ
Yeah, I saw these the very day they came on sale at Costco. Couldnât believe it. Had I had the funds I would have bought it in a heartbeat!!
đ€
I have the Large XC, you can fit two water bottles albeit shorter bottles inside frame. One of my spokes came through the rim as well, WTB sent me a upgraded KOM i30 with spokes and nipples and gave my shop supplies to offset the labor so I paid nothing to get a new wheel, resued the hub only for new wheel.
This bike is very capable on the downs and climbs great. I have taken it down black diamonds and done 3-4' drops and never bottomed out.
For some reason It didnt occur to me that the Large might have two water bottle mounts inside. Now I think if I get one, ill prolly go large because of that haha. And Yeah this bike is crazy capable.
@@MTBRadDad great review and thanks to you, I'm now shopping for the XC and trying to sell my 27.5 Scott Spark! LOL. I'm also 5' 10" which is between sizes far too often. You don't think the L would have felt too big?
Haha awesome đđ». My primer is a large a feels fine. Iâll prolly go Large on the xc mostly cause of the additional bottle cage Mount inside lol
Costco had good bikes MANY years ago. Skykomish Granite Point. Nice Tange Chromo with Shimano LX first gen triggers. Had one in High school. It was a great bike! $600 back then as I remember which was not cheap. This was early 1990s. I rode the snot out of that bike.
đ€
Great video. Not enough Intense 951 videos and this was the most thorough review yet. I'm looking at the XC one b/c it's in stock at Costco. I think the XC is really more considered a "down country" bike if you believe in that type of bike. BTW what size bike did you test and what is your height? I'm between sizes (S/M) at 5'6" and leaning toward medium. Seems like standover height for Small and Medium are similar and a bit high. Anyway thanks for your video - liked and subbed.
Thanks! So im 5' 10 and I was riding a medium. I totally believe in the down country bikes haha. My Primer is a size large so I was unsure about the medium, but i actually really enjoyed the medium.
Thanks for the video. Iâm actually curious what light you are using in the video. Itâs pretty nice. Also this area looks like Santa Clarita ca?
This czcams.com/video/D9I1sD32ylQ/video.html
Can I just say the colors/lighting/filming of your studio is BEAUTIFUL
Thank You! I really appreciate that!.
Good Video Adam, solid review. That's a pretty good deal on that bike
Thanks Mark!
I called Intense and spoke to them. They said I would be best suited for the trail. The trail was alway out of stock at Costco. Caught it one day and bought it. Not enough riding yet but just love the bike initially.
Thats awesome. You will love the trail! I Own the intense Primer, which is the same thing. And its a super capable bike
Great bike! I have the 951xc and my buddy has the Sniper T. I feel like my buddies bike has a bit more flex in it. I did put the Sid ultimate on mine vs his Fox 34 step cast. I also put one up carbon bars just to match my other bikes. I upgraded to Vitoria Syerra Tires and inserts and that was the game changer for me. I am a 208 lbs and former DH racer and this bike is just awesome
Thatâs interesting to hear , would you say the frame had more flex or was it just the fork?
@@MTBRadDad the 35mm sid is very stiff. The other big difference was the wheel set. We are going to swap wheels in the spring just for fun. But last we rode back to back we both were thinking the 951 had a cheaper and stiffer carbon lay up.
I have a buddy with the Sid and heâs said the same thing . Hmm question is, is the 951 or sniper t a better frame lol
@@MTBRadDad my buddy commented that my bike felt more confident and I agree. His accelerated a bit better. I also installed the upgraded upper link but I dont think that made that much of a difference.
Intense at Costco nice. Palm Canyon Epic is sick man. I did that ride in my Carbine 29 last year. Super fun ride.
Love me some palm canyon epic
Great ( and thorough) review Adam. People may have questions, but if they do ? This would be a perfect reference video đđ€đ
Thanks Craig!
Man I hope Costco Canada sells this bike, they should definitely bring it in to the buildings!!
đ€
I enjoyed your video. Currently on a 27.5 and looking for a new bike for local XC races that can still do trail. Nothing comes close to the spec in this price range that I've looked at. This seemed like a great deal for a DC bike but few reviews out there. Seems like a few modifications and it will be a winner!
Thanks! Yeah, there are a few modifications I would want to make as well, but you wouldn't technically need to do them haha.
After the big accident I had with the OEM tires blowing out I switched to much thicker a side wall maxxis tires with cushcore and just got fitter to compensate for the extra weight, because thats far better than coming off at over 50km/h, like I did last year.
đ. High speed crashes are awful.
just discovered your channel, you have some good content, keep at it...subscribed
Thanks!
Always go the speed of fun, whatever that is for you.
Truth!
I am going to try and buy aone of these frames. I would love a good carbon skeleton to build off of and don't see 120mm as short. But I love a good costco value even if its second hand. Hopefully build quality is good on frame as most buyers arent likely doing rocks and jumps or at least you should be able to see wear if they have.
đ
I just got one on Costco online, $1799! "Overbiked and Overtired" Ain't that the truth. I'm usually underbiked and undertired, lol.
Such a good deal right now.
@@MTBRadDad Cheers!
Nice close-ups! đ
Thanks!
I own two intense bikes. Older but still fun to ride I have a m1 04 and M6 love these bike and company.
Nice!
Intense is a good budget bike for sure ! My buddy rides one ! . But really good beginner bike for sure ! You should try the sentinel ! Not as nimble but Iâm telling your they climb like a pack mule ! And I ride it like a straight downhill bike !
Yeah those transition bikes look nice đ€
In my opinion this sniper 951 and epic evo are the 2 best entry level down country/XC bikes. Easily upgradeable, and still perform well at stock specks
Completely agree đđ»đ€đ»
@@Intrepidsunday Iâve never had that problem with the Evo. Mines an XL cause iâm pretty tall, but even a bike that has that issue it could be fixed with new bike parts đ
In all seriousness without buying new bars or a stem; the bars could be rotated upward slightly, and the controls move with it as well. Headset spacers could also be moved if available.
Yesss dooood. Sick vid
đ€ Thanks!
Great review! I have a quick question for you about this Intense 951 XC bike. My son currently races XC with a few organizations here in Arizona. Would this be a good choice for his next bike? He currently has a aluminum frame Specialized Stumpjumper. Thank you!
Thanks! Yeah this would be a great choice.
Hey Michelle, we live in Az also, our 14 y/o races mbaa. He got one for Christmas. He will ride high school also . It is a great upper middle starter bike, if you can call that. Upgrade the thin tires for Az racing, the rocks our rough. I like maxxis and agree upgrade rims when you can. Great Xc racing bike, I am jealous of him. Go for it.
Heâd maybe be better buying a used bike with better components from one of the local riders.
I know new stuff can be totally attractive but when it comes to performance, generally one can spend wiser by going with top of the line components that are a few years old vs what comes on what unfortunately isnât a top notch bike.
It pains me to realize how expensive things have become. Yikes! Or totally ask your son what he or other riders doing what heâs into think. Itâs such a cool thing youâre supportive of his biking thing. Itâs a badass sport that keeps one in shape!
Maybe I spoke too soon. Thereâs some great stuff about this bike in that price range!
@@tfisk2511 Thank you so much!!! We have some upgraded rims on order, just waiting for them to ship. :) My son is also doing the MBAA races.
Great review on the 951, really like your T-shirt can you tell us brand name and possibly where you got it

Great Review Rad Dad!
Thanks All!
Just stumbled onto your channel - incredibly high quality content - well done! Intrigued by the 951 - Regarding the rear hub, hard to say anyone âneedsâ a higher engagement hub, especially if this is someoneâs first ârealâ bike upgrade. However, high engagement hubs with quality wheels should prob be the first significant upgrade someone does on this bike
Thanks! I think a-lot of people don't realize what a quality wheel set can do đ€
Bro, that is an absolutely gorgeous looking bike đ
I think so too!
Great review. I had considered this bike as a secondary backup bike, but ended up with a Ibis Ripley AF instead. Having a short travel XC/Trail bike here in Southern Cali is perfect. A 120mm can still tackle the tech trails like of Greer Ranch, Aliso, and Laguna. Don't ride my Ripmo as much anymore
Thanks! Yeah the Ripley is a solid bike! I know that when I get the 951XC or Sniper T, My primers not going to get ridden as much also haha
C J i got a notification from you mentioning you only use the ripmo certain times, but I don't see it here. Did you delete it? Ive had a few notifications come but the comments are gone when I go to read them
im still loosing comments. I saw you say something about OC area. Im not to far. Hit me up on Instagram.
Looking forward great đ bike đČ
Where can I find that video about over-biked and under-tired?
You took it on TMB?! You're a mad man haha. Awesome video!
Haha thanks! Yeah haha, it did great lol. Even the drop was fun on it. Picking up the trail version prolly this week đ€
How do you get the refurbished bike? It's amazing that they have this in stock.
If you head over to the intense 951 site and go to the sales tab they show whatâs available đđ»
A Session wheelset would be a great upgrade on that bike!
I mean, if you wanna send me a 27.5 Carbon Wheetset for my primary bike. đ Could be a fun video đ
my shop just picked up intense, great price, and well built bikes. the only beef i have with this brand is they have no idea what kind of brand they want to be, its very annoying as the dealer but it is pretty good on the customer.
đ
What is the travel on the rear shock. It looks like a 165mm x 38. I think I would need more travel.
This is a 120/120 bike. They do make one based off the primer which has more travel
@@MTBRadDad Great bike but I am way to big for it. that bike is not for a guy over 200 pounds.
Got mine through an intense dealer - nice bike!
Awesome! Enjoy!
Iâm so stoked I just picked mine up from costco today for $2500!
Daaaang!!! Thatâs a killer price congrats!!

That's a pretty sick bike my dude
It Seriously is, Now I just need to get one haha
@@MTBRadDad lol damn better get one bro
I'm 5"10 and bought a medium based on my experience with the intense trail, but the XC feels smaller. Would you go with a slightly bigger bike vs a slightly smaller bike?
It kind of depends if you want agility or straight line stability.
@@MTBRadDad I returned the medium and got the large. The XC feels so much different than the trail.
i didnt know intense bikes were at costco and a good price too
Right now they are a super good deal
What light are you using in the videos ?
Magic shine 3500 and 8000 lights đ€đ»đđ». I have a review up of the 3500. Currently working on one for the 8000
@1:00 -I thought the terrain is vertical, only to realise itâs just the dialogue box from the âcommentâ animation.

So this is a down county bike đČ. Iâm also thinking dc for my next bike - something like Yt izzo 130mm 29er or in New Zealand we have Merida one twenty 130/120 dc 29er
Yeah pretty much haha. The Izzo looks really nice also!
This bike look so cool, but are so expensive.... bought my first bike last year for $1400 (Trek Roscoe 7) and I thought that was expensive. Guess with my newbie bike skill, I don't really need these high end stuff on the green trails I'm riding haha.
All gotta start somewhere, my first bike was $800 đ€đ»đđ»
I paid $900 each for 2 bikes I own. I added a couple hundred in extras, but that's it.
I ride far far more than most people I know who have way more expensive bikes.
My point is basically that if you are actually riding your less expensive bike and it's working for you... GREAT! I'd like to see more big- time channels supporting entry bikes and not just dream bikes.
I ALWAYS roll my eyes when someone I know is bragging about their latest high- end bike.... that I know will be talked about more than it is actually ridden!
Best Regards!
That bike is a good deal for a retail bike. Really, the only way to get a significant upgrade for that same price, and drop 3 lbs. is to built it yourself (assuming you have tools and the skills). My last full suspension with full Sram XX1 drive train and Fox 34 stepcast fork cost me $3950 to build and weighs 24.8lbs.
25 lbs for 4k? That's almost unheard of.
