I have literally been trying this since this video came out and finally decided I was never going to get it. I even built the manual machine from your video. THEN, suddenly today for some reason it all came together in my driveway and my wheel came up to the balance point and I started riding a wheelie! I was so stoked that I kept doing it and doing it and after about an hour I was wheelieing all the way down my driveway - not sure what happened but I've doing exactly what April was doing, I just kept practicing and practicing. Didn't get better, it just suddenly happened. Amazing. I love you guys, your videos are the best. I learned to do drop-offs watching you teach April. FYI, for those out there thinking "it's too late, I'm too old", I'm 54 and started riding seriously a few months ago.
That is so awesome Dave! We are so proud of you for not giving up!!! Thank you for sharing, it is inspirational 😊
yes you will get suddenly your balance point someday of practicing.these r wheelies ;)
i just got it today and all my neighbours said "nice! kid"
Inspirational, Dave! I just got back into MTBing a couple months ago after being away for 25 years! I'm 63 - still athletic but more creaky. Switched to a full suspension bike last week and looking forward to wheelies and some more challenging trails. BTW, Kyle and April. You have created a great channel. Keep it up!
That's great to hear. I'm 36 and have just taken up riding again and am trying to learn the basic tricks like wheelies to make riding more fun. The more fun it is the more likely you stick with it. It's such good exercise.
No way I saw you guys filming this one. I was the random dude who said 'can I have a go' and then totally botched my wheelie as I rode by. Good tips.

Hell yeah, great video. Thanks for the help man.

It was super helpful to watch someone else learn, because in other videos the instructor tried to do it wrong on purpose, which ends up not being as obvious or “authentic”. Thanks for a great tutorial!
Glad you found our video so helpful! 😊
I love watching videos with people who are new to stuff, having someone encourage them and practice with them enough to learn something so fast. So inspiring, I am getting back into mountain biking/dirt jumping after a knee injury!
I'd forgotten all about wheelies, but I used to do them all the time when I wasn't hitting trails or jumping off plywood ramps as a kid. I got sick after that, and got good at wheelies in wheelchairs instead, lol.
All wheelies are fun wheelies!

One of the best explanatory videos on wheelies that I've ever seen. Great bit about the available movement with arms locked or not with respect to the balance point.
So many “How to...” videos just end up with the coach show how good the are at the particular activity. You work with a novice, you spot the faults, you analyse them and then you correct them. As we say in driver training, “see it, say it, sort it.”. And as a result you see real progress. The progress in you girlfriend in the space of one hour was amazing. Offers hope for the rest of us.😉 Great video.

Haha thanks! I definitely have my ups and downs and have actually battled with bouts of depression that run in my family but i feel so lucky to have found April and riding bikes always makes me smile! I just do my best to keep things in perspective and try to have more good moments than bad moments each day :)
Kyle Warner - Mtb I’m sorry to hear your past bouts with depression. Your presentation skills and your kind and positive demeanor, both here and as a host on your podcast, I would have never known. April is a fast learner and your a good teacher it took me 2 months just to start riding them for a few seconds
I've been working on this for a short while now and it's the " float zone" that is the key but also the scariest. Great video as always. Love what you both do
this is so great, thanks Kyle and April!! Here are a couple more tips I learned while working these out.
1. SPEED - go into the wheelie with a moderate speed. Too slow and it will be too hard to balance, too fast and it's dangerous.
2. SEAT HEIGHT - I messed with this quite a bit and found that lowering the seat about 1 1/2" from my normal riding position was perfect. It lowered my front wheel and gave me a little wider range for the balance point.
3. LOCKED ARMS - super critical! As soon as I started doing this with commitment, things started to fall into place. Thanks Kyle!
4. SET GOALS - practice in an empty parking lot and use the spaces to set goals. Once you can wheelie one space, try for two, then three, and so on.
5. STEERING - your first "balance point" wheelies will probably go wildly left or right. Fix this by pulling up on the bars with EVEN PRESSURE on both grips. Be really conscious of this! Use your knees, legs and core muscles to counter steer when you start to drift.
6. BRAKES - once you've got the feel of lifting the front wheel and can wheelie a short distance, lay off the brake. Yes, you will loop out a lot and maybe crash! But you will train your core muscles to find the balance point faster, rather than just relying on the brake.
7. DON'T PULL UP TOO HARD - I was doing this and blasting right past the balance point, looping out every time. Pull up with moderate force and keep those arms locked. Think "goldilocks" (i.e. "just right"). The front wheel probably doesn't need to be as high as you think!
8. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! - it took me about a month of practicing these every single day for about 30 minutes before things started to really come together. One dirty little secret of wheelies is that it takes *strength*, so if you're out of shape like I was, it will take time to build up those key muscles. Added bonus, you will start to get ripped and probably lose weight!
Good luck!
VirtualWoodshed thank you!

Kyle - I think your [and April’s] HOW TO videos are the best out there. Your instruction concentrating in the important elements and not overdoing the information [and April’s listening skills], give all that is needed to practice correctly and achieve success - plus you guys are great to watch working together. I’d love to see one on beginning jumping [if it doesn’t exist already]. Keep ‘em coming!
I've been trying to wheelie for so long I watched a load of videos but yours made the most sense and about two days of doing what you did I could do it thanks!
Awesome explanation of how to WHEELIE! I truly enjoy watching the progress April makes as she keeps on trying to put it all together. I will be trying this today with my new out-of-the-box MTB!
I’ve only seen your wheelie and drop video but I’ve seen a lot of wheelie videos and a lot of drop videos. Your videos are miles better than any of the other videos.

I've recently just started riding again. Really haven't rode seriously in about 20 years, I used to ride wheelies forever and anywhere. But now since riding again the wheelie didn't come right back, but I'm gonna use your tips and I think I'll be riding wheelies in no time. Thanks 👍
Hope it comes back quick Andy!
I feel you. I've not ridden for about 6 years due to injury, which I got over, and then my youngest child came along and swallowed up any spare time I would have had.
My trail bike got stripped and put in a box where it's been sat up until last week when I cleaned and degreased it of essence of trail and got it back in one piece.
All I can say at the moment with regards to how I feel about riding again is ouch! Lol
I'm using muscles I haven't used in a long time, getting fatigued way sooner than I thought I would, and my skills have diminished massively. Only thing I have retained is my static balance.
Time and practice and I'll be sending the way I use to and so will you 👍
Same here, I used to wheelie my ten speed all over the place, but now on an MB I can't seem to do it. I think if I find the right gear to be in it will all come back.
Can you wheelie now?

I was actually surfing other videos when I came across this. As a kid, it was one trick that I never had much luck with, so I thought it would be interesting to watch. There are so many good tips here that I'm temped to reclaim my youth and give it another go....even at 50yrs :)
hahaha same for me!!
Dude, I'm 55, started riding again a few months ago and literally learned to wheelie from this video and from building the manual machine Kyle shows how to build in another video. I also learned to do drop-offs from Kyle & April's videos, the way he teaches her is so helpful because it's like he's teaching me. I've told my wife that I wish I was Kyle's girlfriend! They go to cool places and he just teaches her the whole time. Check out all their videos.
At 50 as welll and this video makes me want to get a bike and relive those bmx days and try and master the trick I could never do in the 80s 🤦🏽♂️😂😂
Dave Sabella, you pumped me up. I'm gonna start practicing the wheelies, I've always sucked at it but I love these videos. I'm 50 and started getting back into mountain biking a few years ago. I have a fat tire I ride year round.
The absolute best wheelie video I have ever seen. Great job you two.
I've been trying to learn wheelies for the first time, and a lot of this stuff really helped. What I didn't expect was how much core strength it takes, at least at first. I can feel my abs crunching in as I try to hold the front end up and find the balance point.
Yeah its crazy how all of those little muscles are engaged haha!
Kyle & April - Ride MTB nobody warns you about that part! Everyone just talks about balance and feathering the brake! I’m a cyclocross racer, so I don’t have ANY of those muscles!
One of the best Wheelie instruction videos I've ever seen. Nice coaching Kyle-you're a great teacher! Can't wait to practice. Thanks!
Thanks Chris!
I do wheelies and have been doing them since I was like 12 years old. I never thought there was so much to a wheelie as you described. Wow! Great stuff
The parts when you demonstrated the problems with the seat and the head position were very useful. Thx!
Glad it helped!
Godamn this is the most usefull "how to wheelie" video on YT. It has everything u need, and it's really usefull that u have April to do all u say. I can say that it's a lot easier if u stay slow b4 starting to pull up the front wheel. Also the gear bein on the middle one is the best for me. Considering I wasn't able to pull the from wheel more than 5 cms, in 2 hrs I got to the point where I can pull it around 30-40 cms, and stay like that for like 5 secs. Thank u so much for the tutorial!
Glad it helped! That is so awesome! Congrats and keep up the good work!

Thank you both for doing this, I just started mountain biking about 6 months ago... at 58, and love it. Your videos have helped me with techniques that provided confidence on the trail. Love that you use April, her love of MTB and to learn helps me do the same.
Awesome to hear, glad our videos are helpful! Hopefully we can make your MTB journey as safe and fun as possible!
It's so great to have someone explain something I just know instinctively, and even better to see the results of your observations/teaching work so well.
I hail from the 1960s and grew up in the UK riding "trackers" (racing bikes converted to single speed, with spuddy tyres and wide handlebars) in the 1970s, banana-seated Choppers and then BMXs in the 1980s. I learned to wheelie before I was 10yo. I used to be able to wheelie at a walking pace, using my brake to modulate speed, for as long as I wanted, including wheelie-ing around corners. It was as normal to me and my friends as walking.
After years of not cycling, I returned to it about 11 years ago in my (then) early 40s and although I don't have the leg-strength of my youth, I chose a hardtail MTB specifically because it had short chainstays and a lightweight airshock fork which made it amazing for wheelies. That was literally the ONLY criteria I had when choosing a bike.
Now in my 50s, I cycle about 4000 miles a year, mostly on country lanes and trails. I'm still on that same 26" wheeled hardtail (although it's a bit of a ship of Theseus with new everything except the frame and forks) and I still amaze my friends and colleagues when I pop a wheelie. None of them can which I find absolutely amazing and wonder how they grew up not being able to. As I'm typically 10 years older than most of them, I guess they grew up with stronger thumbs than my generation (playstation etc) instead.
Getting a wheelie just right is one of those sheer joyful moments in life, like playing drums, or a long rally of table-tennis, or drifting my sportscar.
One thing I can't do is a manual. I watch those kids doing one handed manuals on those Critical Mass events. Even at my age, I think they're as cool af. I'll check out your other video of that and give that a go next.
Couple of points I've learned since I re-started riding again - the first is that it's harder to wheelie with SPDs - well, it isn't but you need to be supremely confident to try it with SPDs,. the second is that disk brakes snatch a lot more than old fashioned rim brakes making modulation a little harder/different.
The ONLY video, out of all tye big mountain bike CZcamsrs I have watched that ACTUALLY teaches one step by step in detail on how to wheelie a mountain bike. Thank You

Hey Kyle. I am brand new to mountain biking, and just dropped a decent amount on a brand new nice Hardtail. The wheels are a lot bigger than my old shitty XC bike, that I only used to cruise around town. It has been a big change, and I have been especially struggling on manuals, being a small rider. Only about 120 lbs soaking wet haha. I could not figure out why my wheelies were not working at all, and when I came inside from practicing today lo and behold you had uploaded a video on wheelies. I think it’s the timing of my pop, and the seat height. I’m excited to get back out and try again later today.
Yeah the timing and seat height are so key! let me know how it goes!
Kyle Warner - Mtb thanks for the fast reply. I just got in from practicing, but fuck it I’m headed right back out now. Going for my first MTB daytrip tomorrow, want to show up my friends with some sick wheelie skills!

Kyle Warner - Mtb Hey! i’m about 4-5 days into really practicing wheelies probably around 9-10 hours, and i can hold on up for a good 5-10 seconds, but i always sweet to lose my balance or start going in different directions. is there any likely cause of that,
UmNick Try balancing with your knees or moving hips on saddle
There is always that one guy lol one is trying so hard to learn the new trick and this guy just pass by doing a wheelie like he commutes to work like that haha
Great tips!! I'm going to try tomorrow. Today I enjoyed riding my brother bike and wanted to know how to do wheelie
Great videos Kyle & April ! I had heard of you from Chico days 2010ish when i was going to school there and riding for Chico, glad to have these videos while my wife is trying to learn right now! TY
That's awesome, thank you!!! 😊
This was amazing! I always wanted to learn how to do this but was always too scared to try too hard and actually do it. Thanks!
Glad we could inspire you to finally try!
You like read my mind. I need this for my BMX bike. Almost landed on my butt yesterday. Lol watching now......
Yeah on a bmx is a little harder but if you can practice with your seat up a little bit it will help on those bikes!
For big wheel bmx have ur seat all the way down and tilted since there is no suspension so when u pop up the front tire u need ur weight and momentum to pop it up high enough without using all ur energy and lightly feather the brakes and must always have ur arms straight
Great progress in one day!! I've never pulled a wheelie in my life, but I'm sure its like learning to drive a manual transmission car. A pro can explain it to you, but only personal practice can truly teach your brain/body what to do. Good job so far. You'll be showing off in no time!!!
Great video and thanks to April for being brave and trying something new on camera for youtube!! Not easy to put yourself out there for many people and it's awesome to see her sharing this learning experience to encourage everyone else!
Excellent teaching skills too!!
Thank you!
So I'm 46. I've been trying to wheelie for probably 40 years. I have sucked at wheelies for the entire time. That is a lot of years of frustration. I watched this vid, picked up all the bits I have been doing wrong and within an hour of practicing what I had just learned, I did the best wheelie of my life. Being honest I still suck at wheelies, there's way more practise to go yet, but I suck considerably less and I know when and why I get it wrong. So, thank you very much for posting this vid! :)
good for you bro!
So awesome to hear Grey! Hope hear some future progress on them 😊
I hear you bro!
I hope I don’t have to try and wheelie for that long................................................
At 7:40 there is just a guy flexing his wheelies
Lol. Yes he was but his skills lacked. There was no reason why he couldn't have kept that wheelie going around the corner.
Travis k shut yo hatin ass up
@@Getback5 Just speaking the truth. The wheelie was technically weak. It was better than most people can do but as far as wheelies go, it was weak.
it was me!
Shout up
Excellent work guys. Super nice putting it all together, Well done ! 👍🏾
This video did help. Usually when I tried to wheelie i'd look down. But FIRST TRY I looked up and the wheel came up for about 15 seconds while peddling down the street. Probably one of my best feelings ever. Tysm
