    Mountain Biking is an expensive sport and the one question I hear time and time again is: what's a cheap bike worth buying? I seek to answer that question by buying and trying what I would call the most budget friendly mountain bike worth riding on a trail. But, will it stand up to the test? Watch and see as I take the Nishiki Colorado Comp 27.5+ off jumps, down trails, off drops, and so much more.

      @ryanotte6737 Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, back in 2007 I went with an entry level Haro MTB for college commuting, shortcuts, and trail rides. With $400, I got an amazing aluminum frame, a bit on the heavy side, but bombproof. Only major upgrade it very much needed to improve performance was the fork, but I abused that and the drivetrain over a ton of miles pretty quickly. I just sold it recently, as the taller fork upgrade made it a slightly too tall of a fit for me on some gnarlier terrain I am encountering where I have moved.
      A mid-tier model hardtail, a bit over $1000, seems to have been a great choice for the new one. Seems to be a great price point for an amateur that intends to ride consistently without wanting for upgrades straight away. You might have to spend a bit more for a dropper post, if that be needed for the terrain or style of riding desired.

    another great video! And I am surprised by this bike. Not only because it seems like it ticks a lot of the right boxes for trail usability, but because of the brand name Nishiki. Back in the 80s Nishiki was a respected mid range brand like Trek and Specialized, found only in local bike shops here in Canada. Some of the first popular mountain bikes in our region were Nishiki Bushwackers, fwiw. I know this isn't really the Nishiki bike company making bikes for Dicks, but just some chinese brand who bought the rights to use this defunct Japanese bike brand. But it brings back good memories. My first MTB was a 1986 Rocky Mtn Sherpa, and it was pretty similar to the best Nishiki MTB of the day.

I got the 2014 29er as a Christmas gift (my first MTB) and it's been loved and absolutely shredded on ever since - I rode my first trails, popped my first wheelies, cased my first jumps on it. After four years of hard use, though, it is starting to fall apart and I'm probably going to upgrade after Christmas.
    I get why so many riders hate on store bikes, but in reality a trail worthy store bike is perfect for a first-time rider because you can still have fun and not spend too much cash to see if you like the sport. My Colorado will be properly retired when the time comes, because without it I wouldn't have fallen in love with mountain biking 🚲

The Nishiki has a one by, but it is a little scary to think about the cost cutting they had to do to get that at such a low price. The derailleur hanger is probably one of those things that was in the cost cutting measures.

      @@MistrzBartek125 A lot of folks don't like 3xAnything when dealing with mountain bikes. Even on my Hybrid, I don't use the inner two gears hardly ever once my chubby butt built a bit of core strength. One or two larger cogs on the rear for the worst climbs in town would do just fine. One less derailur, and you can use a wide-narrow front cog to help hold the chain on.
      My one complaint is that I wish someone made a left-hand 8-9-10 selector. But that's purely for making a gas/e-bike and the throttle being on the right.
      Not that I've ever had a chain slip that wasn't down to being garbage at setting derailurs, but it'd be nice. (also lets you slap a front freewheel on, and use an 80cc and jackshaft if you want to go that route :P).

      @Hanshananigan Před 4 lety

      @Gary Brown We all have "skill" to some degree and I said mine was not high. More to the point, parts were rattling off the bike, the brakes were ok but the v-brakes shifted around inconsistently and the shifting was not consistent. Overall it would not stay tuned up long enough which was a safety issue on the trail. I transitioned it to a commuter and did well in that role for years.
      Glad your Stingray served you well, but there is no comparison- it was very likely a better bike than the Huffy. Not to mention there are many models of the Stingray. If you had a basic one speed with a coaster brake then no doubt it was solid.

Did not seem as though you were mistreating it, or abusing it, so, why did it fail??? Weird frame configuration, factory defect, improper factory installation, poor material used in manufacturing, or, just a freak mishap??? I liked the bike up until that point. Interested in a follow up vid to clear this up... actually looks like a doable bike... maybe a crank upgrade, better shorter stem, dropper post, I'd be good to go. I bought one of these early this summer for $375 + tax. I bought it because I could barely buy the NX drivetrain for that much, and I really wanted to try a 1x drivetrain and a plus tire width before committing a lot of money.
    I don’t ride a lot and I’m out of shape, but I used to ride a lot.
    I LOVE the geometry of this bike, which was a pleasant surprise. I had issues with the crank out of the box, but decided to go with a Hollowtech II style, no name crank, that worked great. I’d consider getting a good, light fork if I stick with this one for awhile, since the XCM weighs a ton. Unfortunately, that reveals one of the bigger issues I have with it.. the straight steerer. It severely limits fork selection and might force me to buy a more expensive bike sooner.
    I’m really happy with it for the price I paid. I upgraded the pedals and grips to some Raceface components too, as they were cheap and yielded good improvements.
